Minnesota Twins Place 3B Trevor Plouffe On Disabled List (Concussion)

The Minnesota Twins had to place third baseman Trevor Plouffe on the 7-day disabled list due to suffering a concussion Tuesday night while breaking up a double play. There is no time-table set on his return as concussions are considered a much more serious injury than in the past, and he will have to pass a battery of tests before being allowed to return to action.
Taking his spot on the active roster is corner infielder Chris Colabello whom the Twins called up from their Triple-A Rochester minor league affiliate. Look for Colabello, who has been exceptional with the stick this year for Rochester, to get a fair share of at-bats while Plouffe is out.

Twins' Trevor Plouffe exits after getting kicked in head

Minnesota Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe exited last night's contest against the Atlanta Braves after getting kicked in the head by second baseman Dan Uggla while attempting to break up a double play, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com.

Plouffe has since been placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list as a result of the collision.

RT @twins: #MNTwins place @tplouffe24 on 7-day DL with concussion symptoms. Darin Mastroianni placed on 60-day DL.
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) May 22, 2013

Plouffe suffered the injury in the 10th inning. If the knee to the head wasn't enough, Plouffe reached base after being hit by a 97-mph fastball from Braves closer Craig Kimbrel. Then came the contact with Uggla at second after Ryan Doumit grounded into the potential double play.

Following the collision, Plouffe was examined by team trainers. After remaining on the ground in pain for some time, he was able to exit the field under his own power. He'...

Three Cuts: More Gattis magic as Braves dump Twins in 10

ATLANTA -- Taking three hits after the Braves' 5-4, 10-inning, rain-delayed win over the Twins at Turner Field on Tuesday night.

1. Gattis happened. Again

We've become all too accustomed to astounding feats when it comes to Evan Gattis, the Braves rookiejob-hopper extraordinairefolk-hero-in-the-making. But this is getting ridiculous.

Three days after he came off the bench to hit a two-run home run against the Dodgers, El Oso Blanco was at it again, coming in with two outs in the ninth to hit a towering, solo home run to left field that pushed the game to extra innings.

Freddie Freeman would deliver decisive hit, scoring Jason Heyward on a soft fly off Brian Duensing in the 10th inning as Atlanta won its fifth straight. But it was Gattis' ninth homer of the season, and his third in five at-bats as a pinch-hitter, that kept the Braves alive.

"He's looking to do just one thing: put the ball in play," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "He's just so darn strong that even if he d

Remember when you didn't like Joe Mauer?

There's an interesting line that splits the heroes and the villains in baseball. That line is marred - much like the chalk that lines the territory between fair and foul on a ball field - with the smudges of players crossing back and forth. Even more interesting, this line is crossed almost without decision by the players. The decisions on who lands on what side of the line and when are made by fans. Casual observers and hard-core enthusiasts decide who becomes ally and who becomes foe.

Enter Joe Mauer.

There was a time when the kid from Minnesota could do no wrong. Everything he touched turned to gold. Everything he said was gospel. The hometown guy who played for the small-market Twins was a superstar. And for good reason. He could play.

Mauer was one of those rare talents that translates almost instantly. Not all first round picks make the Majors. Heck, not all number one overall picks make the Majors. Even the ones that do don't always pan out. ...

Twins call up rookie reliever Caleb Thielbar

The Minnesota Twins have recalled left-hander Caleb Thielbar and optioned left-hander Pedro Hernandez to Triple-A Rochester.

The move was made Monday before Minnesota's game at Atlanta. The 26-year-old Thielbar is a native of Randolph, Minn., about 40 miles south of Minneapolis.

Two seasons ago, Thielbar became the first player from the independent league St. Paul Saints to have his contract purchased by the Twins. Thielbar had a 3.76 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 26 1-3 innings in relief this season for Rochester.

Hernandez had a 5.85 ERA. In four starts this month, he allowed 30 hits, 17 runs and four homers over 17 innings.

Thielbar set to make MLB debut with Twins

Minnesota native Caleb Thielbar is set to make his major league debut with his hometown team.
The Twins announced Monday that Thielbar, a left-handed reliever, has been recalled from Triple-A Rochester. To make room for Thielbar on the roster, Minnesota optioned left-hander Pedro Hernandez to Rochester.
Thielbar, a native of Randolph, Minn., pitched in 17 games as a reliever this year with the Red Wings. He posted a 3.76 ERA with 34 strikeouts and eight walks in 26 13 innings. Thielbar has pitched in eight straight games without allowing an earned run, dating back to late April. Last year he pitched for three of Minnesota's minor league affiliates and eventually ascended to Triple-A, where he was 3-1 with a 3.57 ERA in 25 games.
The 26-year-old Thielbar was originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 18th round of the 2009 draft and was signed by the Twins as a minor league free agent in 2011. Before he signed with Minnesota, Thielbar pitched for the independent St. Paul Saints of the American Asso

Sneakers more than a hobby for Twins Worley

MINNEAPOLIS Now that the baseball season is nearly two months old, Vance Worley has settled into his surroundings as a member of the Twins. But when the right-hander moved to Minnesota this offseason, he had one item of business he had to adjust to.
Where to put all of his shoes?
Since he was a teenager, Worley has made a hobby out of collecting sneakers. A former basketball player during his childhood in Sacramento, Worley always had to have the coolest sneakers from the biggest NBA stars. Michael Jordan, Gary Payton, Penny Hardaway Worley had all of their shoes.
The favorites were a pair of oxidized green Air Jordan XIVs. It was the first pair of Jordans that Worley ever bought, but his family's house was broken into when he was 12 and the shoes were stolen before he ever got the chance to wear them during basketball season.
As he got older, the collection started to grow. Once he started collecting paychecks as a professional baseball player, Worley had more money to buy more shoes including six pai

The Red Sox were able to pick up their fifth straight win on the road on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, but it took a little while to do it. The Sox came back out and captured the win after a three-hour rain delay. Starting pitcher John Lackey pitched six innings in the 5-1 victory, but knew after the first half hour of the delay that he wouldn’t be going back into the game. Lackey said the team spent the time watching a classic baseball movie in the clubhouse.
Chris Parmelee of the Minnesota Twins had an unfortunate incident in his Sunday afternoon match-up against the White Sox. Parmelee was on his way to first base to try and beat out a grounder and as the throw came to first everything seemed normal. However, that is when everything went wrong. The throw was a bit off and it ended up hitting Chris directly in the family jewels. Ouch.

Twins can't seem to capitalize offensively vs. Boston

MINNEAPOLIS Plenty of things jump out in the box score of Saturday's lengthy game between the Twins and Red Sox a 12-5 Boston win that took nearly four hours. For Minnesota, one of the most glaring problems was how many runners didn't score.

The Twins left 13 runners on base in Saturday's loss at Target Field and were only outhit by the Red Sox by one (13 hits to 12). Minnesota was tagged out once at the plate and left the bases loaded several times. The Twins finished 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position, leaving plenty of potential runs on the bases.

"We scored some runs, but we just didn't come up with enough big hits," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire.

After scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut Boston's lead to 7-5, Minnesota had a chance to trim the deficit even more. With the bases loaded and one out, Aaron Hicks popped out to second baseman Dustin Pedroia in shallow right field. The ball wasn't hit very far out of the infield, but Twins catch

Mauer returns to lineup for Twins

Joe Mauer has returned to the Minnesota Twins lineup after missing one game because of a stiff back.

Mauer was scratched from Friday night's game against Boston after he woke up with back pain. Manager Ron Gardenhire says Mauer came to Target Field on Saturday feeling much better, and he was put back in the lineup as the designated hitter. The plan is for him to catch the series finale on Sunday.

Mauer entered with a 14-game hitting streak and a .349 batting average.

The Twins also announced that right-hander Cole De Vries has been reinstated from the disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Rochester. De Vries has been on the disabled list since April 7 because of a strained right forearm.

Twins' De Vries activated off DL, optioned to Triple-A

MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins have activated right-hander Cole De Vries from the disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Rochester.

De Vries initially made the Twins' 25-man roster out of spring training but was put on the DL with a right forearm strain on April 7. He pitched in three games one each at High-A Fort Myers, Double-A New Britain and Rochester during his rehab assignment. Last time out for Rochester, De Vries allowed six runs on 11 hits in just four innings.

If one of Minnesota's other starting pitchers falters, De Vries may have a shot to earn a spot in the Twins' rotation. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native made his major league debut last season and was 5-5 with a 4.11 ERA in 17 games (16 starts).

The 28-year-old De Vries had an impressive spring en route to earning a trip north. In seven games (four starts) in the Grapefruit League, he posted a 0.53 ERA and a 3-0 record while striking out nine and walking five in 17 innings.

Worley continues to show signs of improvement

MINNEAPOLIS After finally earning his first win in a Twins uniform last time out, Minnesota right-hander Vance Worley took another step forward Friday. Unfortunately for Worley, it didn't result in his second straight victory.
Worley allowed just one unearned run in six innings Friday against Boston and left with a one-run lead. But the Twins went on to lose 3-2 in extra innings, meaning Worley earned a no-decision.
Still, Worley believed Friday was a step in the right direction.
"It felt good," Worley said. "We worked on a few things this last week in our bullpens and I felt like it carried over. They took a lot of good pitches that I threw today and the ones I wanted them to swing at, I just wasn't getting any swings."
Keeping the ball down was key for Worley, who induced three double plays in his six innings of work. Shortstop Pedro Florimon and second baseman Brian Dozier worked well up the middle, turning all three of the double plays.
"They keep working hard at it,&quot

Twins Broadcast Says Ex-Manager Tom Kelly Averaged 149 Wins Per Season

Former Minnesota Twins manager Tom Kelly brought the club’s two World Series titles during his 16 years as manager (1986-2001) and remains a fan favorite, but the local broadcast gave the skipper a little too much credit Friday night.
Kelly, Ron Gardenhire’s predecessor, occasionally appears on Twins’ broadcasts, doing so Friday night against the Red Sox. A 5th inning on-screen graphic more than doubled his career win total, putting him in sole possession of 5th place on the career win mark, passing Lou Pinella (1,835 wins) and even Joe Torre (2,326).

Those 2,384 wins would force Kelly to average 149 wins in each of his 16 seasons, only 2 of which resulted in playoff appearances. Kelly won 1,140 games in those 16 seasons.

Mauer out of Friday's lineup with stiff back

MINNEAPOLIS Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer is out of the lineup on Friday for the series opener against the Boston Rex Sox. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said that Mauer came to the park Friday with a stiff back.
"The decision was not to play him," Gardenhire said. "We'll see how he does through the night and check on him for tomorrow, see how it goes."
Mauer has played in all but one game this season prior to Friday. He enters the weekend on a 14-game hitting streak, the longest active streak in the American League.Gardenhire has been able to pencil Mauer into the lineup as the Twins' No. 2 hitter on a regular basis. Friday, however, the Twins skipper had to find someone else to bat second.
That duty will fall to right fielder Chris Parmelee, who will be batting second for the first time in 119 career major league games. Entering Friday, Parmelee is batting .204 with three homers and 10 RBI.
Parmelee said he thought he batted second a few times in the minors and used to be a le

The Minnesota Twins have a pair of outfield prospects setting the Midwest League on fire over the first 35 games of the season. The likes of 19-year old Byron Buxton and 21-year old Adam Walker have paced the Twins Single A affiliate Cedar Rapids Kernels to a first place 24-11 record.
Vance Worley delivers pitch with too much rosin (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes.

Minnesota Twins pitcher Vance Worley's first pitch of the third inning was delivered with a bit too much rosin during Saturday's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

As Worley delivered the first pitch to Nate McLouth, an unmistakable cloud of rosin came off the ball near the pitcher's mound. The cloud was so big and such a distraction that home plate umpire Gary Darling had no choice but to give Worley a warning.

Despite the embarrassing moment, Worley pitched well enough to get the win in the Twins' 8-5 victory over the Orioles. Hopefully Worley will go easy on the rosin from now on.
