Worley continues to show signs of improvement

MINNEAPOLIS After finally earning his first win in a Twins uniform last time out, Minnesota right-hander Vance Worley took another step forward Friday. Unfortunately for Worley, it didn't result in his second straight victory.
Worley allowed just one unearned run in six innings Friday against Boston and left with a one-run lead. But the Twins went on to lose 3-2 in extra innings, meaning Worley earned a no-decision.
Still, Worley believed Friday was a step in the right direction.
"It felt good," Worley said. "We worked on a few things this last week in our bullpens and I felt like it carried over. They took a lot of good pitches that I threw today and the ones I wanted them to swing at, I just wasn't getting any swings."
Keeping the ball down was key for Worley, who induced three double plays in his six innings of work. Shortstop Pedro Florimon and second baseman Brian Dozier worked well up the middle, turning all three of the double plays.
"They keep working hard at it,&quot

Twins Broadcast Says Ex-Manager Tom Kelly Averaged 149 Wins Per Season

Former Minnesota Twins manager Tom Kelly brought the club’s two World Series titles during his 16 years as manager (1986-2001) and remains a fan favorite, but the local broadcast gave the skipper a little too much credit Friday night.
Kelly, Ron Gardenhire’s predecessor, occasionally appears on Twins’ broadcasts, doing so Friday night against the Red Sox. A 5th inning on-screen graphic more than doubled his career win total, putting him in sole possession of 5th place on the career win mark, passing Lou Pinella (1,835 wins) and even Joe Torre (2,326).

Those 2,384 wins would force Kelly to average 149 wins in each of his 16 seasons, only 2 of which resulted in playoff appearances. Kelly won 1,140 games in those 16 seasons.

Mauer out of Friday's lineup with stiff back

MINNEAPOLIS Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer is out of the lineup on Friday for the series opener against the Boston Rex Sox. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said that Mauer came to the park Friday with a stiff back.
"The decision was not to play him," Gardenhire said. "We'll see how he does through the night and check on him for tomorrow, see how it goes."
Mauer has played in all but one game this season prior to Friday. He enters the weekend on a 14-game hitting streak, the longest active streak in the American League.Gardenhire has been able to pencil Mauer into the lineup as the Twins' No. 2 hitter on a regular basis. Friday, however, the Twins skipper had to find someone else to bat second.
That duty will fall to right fielder Chris Parmelee, who will be batting second for the first time in 119 career major league games. Entering Friday, Parmelee is batting .204 with three homers and 10 RBI.
Parmelee said he thought he batted second a few times in the minors and used to be a le

Twins look to blemish Buchholz' spotless record

The Minnesota Twins nearly handed Clay Buchholz his first loss of the season 11 days ago.
Now, the Twins will have another chance to send Buchholz home a loser as they host the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.
Buchholz (6-0, 1.69 ERA) was outstanding en route to six straight wins to begin the season, posting a 1.01 ERA during that span. In his seventh start, however, he surrendered a season-high four runs in Boston's 6-5 win over Minnesota (18-19) on May 6. Buchholz left the game trailing 4-2, but the Red Sox (24-17) rallied and spared the right-hander his first loss.
Against Toronto on Saturday, it was a similar story as Buchholz allowed two runs over eight innings, but left with a 2-0 deficit. Boston rallied again to get Buchholz off the hook before falling 3-2.
"Left a couple pitches up with runners in scoring position. They were able to put a bat on it," Buchholz said. "I've got to make better pitches at that point in the game."
Buchholz now returns to the road where he has post

Minnesota Twins’ Oswaldo Arcia: More Than Just A Nice Name

Oswaldo Celestino Arcia. As great as that name is, the 22-year-old rookie’s play for the Minnesota Twins has been even better. A Venezuela native and the 4th-ranked prospect in the Twins organization, Arcia got his big-league chance on April 15 when fellow outfielder Wilkin Ramirez went on paternity leave. Arcia was sent back down the next day when Ramirez returned, but was recalled once again on the 17th after Darin Mastroianni went on the disabled list. In his 10 games with Rochester, Arcia torched his way to a ridiculous slash line of .394/.474/.727.
In his 23 games with the big-league club, Arcia has posted a solid .286/.318/.476, including a 4-hit performance against the Boston Red Sox on May 8. Since April 26, when Arcia assumed an everyday role with the team, Arcia is 21-64 (.328) with 2 homers and 10 RBIs.

Dunn breaks out of slump in big way versus Twins

MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins took note of longtime nemesis Paul Konerko's return to the White Sox lineup for Wednesday's series finale.

They probably should have been more concerned with the guy batting ahead of him.

Chicago first baseman Adam Dunn he of the .137 batting average continued to torment the Twins, blasting two homers and driving in five runs as the White Sox took the rubber match Wednesday by a 9-4 final at Target Field. Dunn's two-home run performance came one game after he hit a solo homer in Tuesday's 4-2 Chicago victory.

"He had a nice day," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said of Dunn. "He's a strong young man, and when you throw the ball up there he's going to get you."

Twins starter Mike Pelfrey was the first victim to leave a pitch up to Dunn. Pelfrey hung a 3-2 changeup to Dunn, and the Chicago first baseman drove it over the wall in center field for his eighth homer of the season and second in as many days.

Dunn entered Wednesday'

Umpires badly blow two calls in Twins-White Sox game

The umpiring crew for the Minnesota Twins-Chicago White Sox game on Tuesday night badly blew a pair of calls in Chicago’s 4-2 win at Target Field.

The first blown call occurred with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Justin Morneau was on second when Oswaldo Arcia singled to right field. Morneau tried to score on the play, but Alex Rios’ throw clearly beat him. Morneau tried to do a hook slide to avoid catcher Tyler Flowers. Morneau slid around Flowers and tried to reach back to touch the plate, but Flowers tagged him while he was sliding by. Believing Morneau was out, Flowers pretty much gave up after that. However, home plate umpire Jordan Baker missed the tag and instead gave credit to Morneau for reaching over and touching the plate after he was tagged. That bad call literally gave Minnesota a run and made the score 2-1 White Sox.
It’s understandable how Baker missed the call from his angle, so that’s why it would have been great for him to review it.
The next blown call was...

Twins Tuesday: Hicks earns praise from all over for catch

MINNEAPOLIS Aaron Hicks was all over the highlight reels on Monday night, and for good reason. The Twins rookie hit two home runs and also made a leaping catch to rob an Adam Dunn homer.

Following Monday's 10-3 win over the visiting White Sox, Hicks' phone was busy. He said he received around 80 text messages and around 15 voicemails from friends and family wanting to chat with him about his breakout game.

There was someone else who reached out to Hicks on Tuesday after Monday night's game: Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter. Twins fans know that Hicks' catch Monday night against the wall was similar to some of the catches Hunter used to make during his time in Minnesota.

Minnesota Twins Have Dynamic Duo In Byron Buxton And Adam Walker

The Minnesota Twins have a pair of outfield prospects setting the Midwest League on fire over the first 35 games of the season. The likes of 19-year old Byron Buxton and 21-year old Adam Walker have paced the Twins Single A affiliate Cedar Rapids Kernels to a first place 24-11 record. Buxton and Walker form arguably the best 1-2 punch in all of the Midwest League making Twins fans froth at the mouth for their major league arrival.
Byron Buxton comes with all the hype and excitement being the 2nd overall pick in the 2012 amateur baseball draft. The touted teen is off to a monstrous start batting .349 with 5 home runs and 15 stolen bases in 34 contests thus far. Buxton has been an extra base machine stroking 18 extra base knocks out of his 45 hits. Buxton has also flashed the leather manning centerfield for the Kernels compiling a .989 fielding percentage with 1 outfield asssit. Buxton has committed just one error in 87 chances and offers the Twins a 5 tool prospect on the horizon.

Arcia's aggressive approach, confidence belies youth

MINNEAPOLIS Sometimes it's hard to remember that Oswaldo Arcia is just 22 years old. At the plate, the Twins rookie rarely shows his age.

Just 21 games into his major league career, Arcia has already drawn comparisons to the late, great Kirby Puckett for a similar approach at the plate. Puckett rarely saw a pitch he didn't like, and that's been the case with Arcia. Through Monday, that aggressive approach has led to a .299 average with three homers and 12 RBI.

Not bad for a kid who just turned 22 last week.

"Right now he kind of looks like he's in that Kirby Puckett type swing, 'Thou shall not pass at an offering,'" Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said of Arcia. "He does that very well. I'm not going to hold him back. He's going to take some swings. He's going to learn a little bit. He's going to get beaten up by a few pitchers here and there, but he's also going to hurt them a little bit, too."

Hurting opposing pitchers is what Arcia has done

Hicks wows in first multi-hit game of career

MINNEAPOLIS It's not often a Twins player is coaxed out of the dugout for a curtain call from the fans at Target Field. Then again, not many Twins players have done what rookie center fielder Aaron Hicks did Monday as he hit two home runs and robbed another in Minnesota's 10-3 win over Chicago.

But since this was the first time Hicks received a curtain call in his young career, he can be forgiven for not knowing exactly how to handle the situation.

"I heard them," Hicks said of the fans after Monday's game, "but it's my first one, so I don't really know."

After Hicks launched his second home run of the night a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning the Twins faithful at Target Field remained on their feet. It wasn't until after shortstop Pedro Florimon popped out to first base that the 23-year-old Hicks took a step out of the home dugout. He raised his helmet to the fans, who were cheering Hicks' heroics.

Aaron Hicks robs Adam Dunn of HR

Aaron Hicks of the Minnesota Twins made a homerun robbing catch today that might go down as one of the best of the year. Adam Dunn of the Chicago White Sox hit an absolute bomb to straight away center. Hicks took off towards the track and made a huge leap against the wall, robbing Dunn of what would have been about a 415 foot homer. Your browser does not support iframes.

Twins show off St. Paul Saints throwback jerseys

MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers will "Turn Back the Clock" on May 30. On Monday, members of the Twins helped show off the uniforms they'll be wearing for that game.

Minnesota will wear gray throwback uniforms of the 1948 St. Paul Saints team, while the Brewers will also wear jerseys from the 1948 season. Twins catcher Joe Mauer and closer Glen Perkins modeled the Saints jerseys they'll wear at the end of the month.

"The Twins are proud to remember this important part of Minnesota's great baseball heritage as the teams don the uniforms of the St. Paul Saints and Milwaukee Brewers," said Twins curator Clyde Doepner. "This is truly a case of past meets present at Target Field."

That 1948 Saints team included the likes of Roy Campanella, who was the first African American player to play in the American Association. Along with the jerseys from the 1948 team, the Twins will also pay tribute to St. Paul as they honor players from the state's cap

Twins offense riding hot bats of Mauer, Morneau

MINNEAPOLIS Before getting blanked by the Orioles on Sunday, the Minnesota Twins' offense seemed to finally be finding its groove after a dormant April. Not surprisingly, the M&M Boys had something to do with the resurgence.
In the first month of the season, Minnesota scored just 92 runs, tied for fourth-fewest in all of baseball. Granted, the Twins played a few less games than other teams due to a handful of postponements. Regardless, Minnesota's offense just wasn't clicking like it had hoped it would.
That changed when the calendar turned to May. Even with Sunday's shutout entered into the equation, the Twins have scored 64 runs this month, second most in all of baseball and trail only the Tampa Bay Rays' 70 runs in May. Catcher Joe Mauer and first baseman Justin Morneau, two former MVPs, have been leading the way for Minnesota's offense. In 10 games in May, Mauer is batting .463 with 10 doubles and an on-base percentage of .551. Morneau has put up similarly impressive numbers:

Vance Worley delivers pitch with too much rosin (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes.

Minnesota Twins pitcher Vance Worley's first pitch of the third inning was delivered with a bit too much rosin during Saturday's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

As Worley delivered the first pitch to Nate McLouth, an unmistakable cloud of rosin came off the ball near the pitcher's mound. The cloud was so big and such a distraction that home plate umpire Gary Darling had no choice but to give Worley a warning.

Despite the embarrassing moment, Worley pitched well enough to get the win in the Twins' 8-5 victory over the Orioles. Hopefully Worley will go easy on the rosin from now on.
