PSU Review: Ohio State

Allow me to start this rant off by stating for the record that Ohio State deserves all the credit in the world. They outplayed Penn State in every aspect of the game and I don't want to take anything away from that. Having said that, I'm officially done rooting for this team as long as all or part of this coaching staff is still in place. I'm tired of the same conservative play calling on both offense and defense against any team with a pulse. Spread HD? Sure against the likes of...

Ohio State put itself in prime position to win the Big Ten title with an impressive 24-7 win at Penn State on Saturday, and the improvement of quarterback Terrelle Pryor was a major factor.

Like a pitcher who takes a few miles off his fastball to better locate his pitches and work the edges of the plate, Terrelle Pryor at 80 percent might be, for now, more conducive to Ohio State winning than Pryor at 100 percent.

On yesterday's ESPN GameDay show, Chris Fowler and the crew passed along information that Penn State coaches indicated their offensive playbook would be uncharacteristically open against Ohio State. The coaching staff trusted the improved offensive line, and especially trusted Daryll Clark to win the game for Penn State. If such a strategy was ever in place for the Penn State offense, it was scrapped after their first offensive play of the game as defensive end Camero...

Pryor, Buckeyes Earn Key Win At Penn State

By JOHN P. WISEOne Great Season
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Ohio State's win at Penn State wasn't as shocking as No. 4 Iowa's upset loss to Northwestern 800 miles away, but where the Buckeyes suddenly find themselves now might seem a surprise to some.
Visiting OSU muscled its way to a 24-7 defeat of the Nittany Lions in a matchup of the Big Ten's elite, if there could be such a thing this year. In the process, the Buckeyes ripped control of the Big Ten race from Iowa, which saw ...

Ohio State 24, Penn State 7. We don't know exactly how the season is going to play out -- it could very well be, for example, that Penn State just isn't very good. We didn't know much about the Lions coming in, but their offensive malaise and the quiet, steady effectiveness of the Buckeye running game followed exactly the script of Penn State's only other loss this season, i...

Buckeyes whack Penn State, 24-7

Ohio State marched into Happy Valley with nearly every pundit calling the game an easy win, for the Nittany Lions. But the Buckeyes, led by sophomore quarterback Terrelle Pryor, would have none of it, taking care of business on their way to a 24-7 win that looked much easier than even the final 17-point margin would suggest. Penn State has now lost two home games in the same season for the first time since 2004. Buckeyes head coach Jim Tressel brought a system of using special teams and defen...

Your Weekend Primer: Week 10 Picks & Predictions

Three things we'll see before Week 10 is in the books.1. The Buckeyes will take a step closer to a game nobody outside of Ohio wants to see them in. Ohio State's destiny is in its own hands. With back-to-back games against Penn State and Iowa, OSU can either clinch a trip to the Rose Bowl or play its way out of a BCS game. The pressure is on Terrelle Pryor, who returns to his native Pennsylvania for the first time since spurning Penn State for The Sweater Vested One. Last season, Pryo...

Degrees of Loss Separation: Penn State > Ohio State

The Degrees of Loss Separation is a simple concept, I go out and find a highly rated team with some losses playing against a crappy team with lots of losses. Next I find a chain of losses which proves beyond a shadow of a doubt (not at all) that the underdog is going to pull the major upset and storm the field. The Final Outcome is calculated simply: Add up the scores of the losers, add up the scores of the winners in the degrees of loss separation and divide both by the # of degrees.

The Game: Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

At the start of the season this is the game that was marked on the Big 10 calendar. What people did not realize was that Iowa was going to be the team that is undefeated and these squads would be sitting with a loss a piece. Regardless the game is still huge as either of these teams will likely get into the BCS if they win out.

3º of Loss Separation : Penn State > Minnesota > Purdon't > Ohio State

The chain of command really begins with the stunning victory by Purdon't over Ohio State. No one really saw it coming but they stifled Terrelle Pryor and co and took home a 26-18 win. Purdon't has lost to many a Big 10 team including Minnesota back on October 10th by a score of 35-20. The loop was completed by a 20-0 shutout of Minnesota by Penn State.

Final Outcome: Penn State 23 Ohio State 13

Joe Pa gets another victory and another step closer to a 2nd consecutive BCS trip. If Northwestern can shock Iowa this weekend, he just might be one step closer to another Rose Bowl.

Alas, all hate things must come to an end. Here's how we see tomorrow's game shaking out.
BSD Mike:
Honestly, I can see this game going either way. Both defenses should dominate, and the score should be low. Really low. A big special teams play, or a key turnover could swing the balance.
But having said that, I like Penn State's chanc...

For a little Hate Week(tm) recon, let's check on the Ohio State blogs.
Eleven Warriors is hoping for a breakout game from You Know Who:
His teammates are saying he’s playing excited in practice this week, and you hope that he’s starting to see what the little things like squaring the shoulders outside the pocket and running with a purpose can do to help dictate the f...

Whether hero or villain, Terrelle Pryor accepts that he's the star attraction of OSU-Penn State

Ohio State's sophomore QB is stoking the fires of the rivalry that matters most in the Big Ten at the moment -- the one between the teams that have accounted for the last four Big Ten titles -- just by breathing.

'Must-have' fall fashion at Penn State: Terrelle Pryor schadenfreude

I'm sure that, somewhere in their hearts, Pennsylvanians love and respect Terrelle Pryor, a native son with the world at his feet who's set to rekindle the long lineage of great western Pennsylvania quarterbacks. But there's plenty of time for that down the line -- for now, as long as Pryor remains a turncoat in the Scarlet and Gray, Penn State students are content to mock his tears on commemorative t-shirts for Ohio State's visit to Happy Valley this Saturday:
The $10 shirt ...

This weekend's Ohio State-Penn State tussel in Happy Valley may not interest you, but it definitely has the interest of the students of each university. So much so that the Penn State Marketing Association took design submissions from students for their annual shirt sale. The result is the zingtastic design above.
To prepare for the football game against Penn State's biggest opponent, the Penn State Marketing Association has designed a special Ohio State-the...

No 15 Ohio State v No 11 Penn State

#15/12 Ohio State at #11/10 Penn State
Beaver Stadium, State College, PA

Kickoff: 3:30
 TV: ESPN
The Buckeyes need to win the next three games to both capture a least a share of their fifth consecutive Big Ten title and their first trip to the Rose Bowl since the 1996-97 season. OSU visits Penn State on Saturday as the rivalry continues to have conference and post season implications. Last year, PSU won beat the Buckeyes in Columbus for the first time since joining the Big Ten in 1993 and with one conference loss; the Nittany Lions need this win to keep their Rose Bowl dreams alive.
 OSU “O”
Last weeks game could not have gone more wrong for Tresselball. Yes the final was 45-0 but the Buckeyes lost their veteran field goal kicker for the season and the two backups have little to no experience. Tress leans heavily on his kicking game to make up for the pathetic red zone offence we have seen over the last few years and without a proven kicker, Tressel will have to change his game plan. Penn State has one of the best defenses in the country as they lead the NCAA in scoring defense, giving up just 9.3 ppg, while ranking fourth in sacks (3.56), fifth in rushing defense (84.11) and total defense (254.78) and sixth in pass efficiency defense (95.65). With the way the offensive line has been playing, this Buckeye offense doesn’t stand a chance.
 OSU “D”
The crown jewel of this year’s team. This unit continues to shine week in and week out. They will have their hands full with Penn State’s superstars RB Evan Royster and QB Daryll Clark. The defense has the ability to keep the Lions in check and if the offense can sustain long drives to keep the “D” fresh, the Bucks will have a chance.
 Summary
This is not going to be a fun game to watch for Buckeye fans. The offensive line has let the team down all year and has stifled the development of Terrelle Pryor. 2010 must see a change in the coaching of this line or Pryor will be a wasted talent. I hope I’m wrong but a win on Saturday is likely out of the question.
 Prediction: PSU 34 - OSU 7
Why OSU will win:

Defense: The defense will have to win this game with turnovers and three-and-outs.

Why OSU will lose:

Offensive line. Don’t expect this unit to get any better in 2009. Their poor play will prohibit the Buckeyes from establishing any type of offensive firepower.

Bold prediction for the game:

I think I’ve already said it; if the Bucks hope to stay in this game the defense will need to pitch a near shut-out and snag a turnover for a score. Otherwise, the Bucks lose big.

Crazy stat of the game:

-Penn State has never beaten the Buckeyes in two consecutive seasons.

-OSU has the tenth best offense in the Big Ten. ugh

Nitany Lion players to watch:

Senior QB #17 Daryll Clark

Junior RB #22 Evan Royster

Junior WR #6 Derek Moye

Senior LB #43 Josh Hull

Senior DT #91 Jared Odrick

R-Freshman DE #81 Jack Crawford

But by the end of third quarter there was no doubt who was going to win as Ohio State jumped out to a 28-0 lead. Running by two freshman tailbacks added late points with Terrelle Pryor rebounding from his worst game as a college athlete.

By Steve Patterson

After the game freshman running back Jermil Martin talked with the media about his 39 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. “It felt good to score a touchdown.” he said. “It was a dream come true. It felt great to be able to help the team. I've always had that drive and motivation and it was great to go out and show it today.” Pryor got to prove himself in the match, with 239 yards passing on the day with 2 touchdowns in addition to 104 yards rushing and a touchdown. He told Martin what he might have been feeling himself. “Terrelle told me good job and that I was finally proving myself.”

Jim Cordle returned for the buckeyes after sitting out a number of weeks with a injured ankle. “It doesn't affect me during the play;” he explained to the media. “I'm usually a little sore after [the game] though. It’s great to be back in a game situation. It can be up and down each day, but today I felt good.” The Buckeyes are also waiting for starting left tackle Andrew Miller to return from a long battle with the flu. Getting their upperclassmen offensive lineman back can only help with

Sophomore wide receiver DeVier Posey had a career day with 161 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was very humble after the game with such a great performance. “I feel like I still have a lot of learning to do.” he said. “The touchdowns feel good but I'm only half of the equation. Terrell made great passes.” Even with such an outstanding day he felt that he had more to improve. “I feel, personally, that I'm nowhere near where I want to be yet. I haven't reached my full potential, especially because of my hamstring issue early on.” He explained how much he learns weekly at practice. “I'm learning a lot and really trying to incorporate that knowledge onto the field.”

Ohio State is set to play New Mexico State this coming Saturday in Ohio Stadium at noon.
