I Bet Rich Rodriguez Could Sure Use A Couple Of Boilermakers Right About Now

Michigan lost to Purdue 38-36 at the Big House, the first time to Purdue since 1966. The Wolverines have now lost three straight and five consecutive Big Ten games. Even worse? Rich Rod got punked at midfield after the game. After the game, Rodriguez went out to midfield for the customary handshake with Purdue head coach Danny Hope. The problem was Hope brought a guest: Purdue offensive lineman Zach Reckman, who was suspended earlier this season for one game for a late hit, a suspension which...

Michigan suffers rare home loss to Purdue

Joey Elliott threw for a career-high 367 yards and two touchdowns, ran for a score and Purdue held on for a 38-36 victory against Michigan. The Boilermakers (4-6, 3-3 Big Ten) trailed by two TDs at halftime and rallied to end their 11-game road losing streak by winning at Michigan Stadium for the first time since 1966.

On the Spot: Wolverines sink or swim vs. Purdue

Players, coaches and teams with the most at stake on Saturday.
To some extent, Rich Rodriguez has been on the spot ever since he took over from Lloyd Carr at Michigan, and even more so since Nov. 1, 2008, the day his first Michigan team lost at lowly Purdue, 48-42, clinching the program's first bowl-less season in 33 years and its first losing campaign in forty. A certain segment of the Wolverine fan base has never quite forgiven "RichRod" for that; though the prevailing wisdom...

The Purdue Boilermakers and the Wisconsin Badgers will both be gunning for a victory on Saturday when they meet at Camp Randall Stadium. Oddsmakers currently have the Badgers listed as 7-point favorites versus the Boilermakers, while the game's total is sitting at 53.
This Week In Schadenfreude: Oct. 19

It was 2001 the last time Ohio State lost to a team that
finished with a losing record, as previously 1-5 Purdue is almost
guaranteed to do. Since then, the Buckeyes have lost to
Michigan once in seven attempts, ruled the Big Ten and entirely
forgotten what it's like to have a team that genuinely struggles. The
results are delicious.

In the aftermath of Saturday's not-that-close 26-18 loss to the
Boilermakers, the Buckeyes are turning on golden child Terrelle Pryor
after his drama...

The offensive line again failed to protect quarterback Terrell Pryor and did not hold blocks long enough to open holes for the running backs. Darn good thing the Buckeye defense is really scary good and was able to bail out the sputtering offense. Purdue is a big disappointment this season at just 1-5 and despite their offensive numbers, can’t seem to catch a break. The Boilermakers have the leading quarterback in the Big Ten, a running back ranked among the best in the conference and one of the top wide receiver in the country. Purdue just can’t hold on to the ball. The Buckeyes are on a three game “easy street” playing Purdue, Minnesota and New Mexico State before ending the season with a rough stretch of contests against Penn State, Iowa and Michigan. This offense has three games to get it together because if it doesn’t, ending the year 0-3 is a real possibility.
 OSU “O”
Here’s a question to stir the pot: No one questions the talent of Terrell Pryor so why isn’t he improving? Is he a bust or is the coaching staff doing a lousy job teaching and developing him into the quarterback he should be? Hard to say if the crappy offensive line continues to leak linebackers like a sieve. I think these kids are trying their best and giving full effort, so what’s holding back their success. Youth? Coaching? All we can hope for is a fast turnaround or the season will end on a sour note.
 OSU “D”
Purdue’s record is misleading. Quarterback Joey Elliot leads the Big Ten in passing, running back Ralph Bolden is second in the conference in yards per game and wide receiver Kevin Smith is second in the Big Ten in receptions and yards per game. The Boilermaker’s problem is they can’t hold on to the ball and have turned the ball over 20 times so far on the season. The Buckeye defense has 14 takeaways this year are will be looking for more. Purdue has lost four of the last five games by less than four points but his weekend they face a scary…really scary Buckeye defense.
 Summary
The game comes down to the Boilermaker’s 410.2 yards of total offense per game against the Silver Bullet’s 271.8 yards of total defense. The Buckeye defense will keep the Purdue offense off the field giving the OSU offense control of the game.
 Prediction: OSU 37 – PU 6
Why OSU will win:

Purdue is a turnover machine. The Silver Bullet will score at least one touchdown.

Purdue can’t stop anyone and the Buckeye offense is talented enough to put up some big numbers.

Why OSU will lose:

Turnovers and poor offensive execution.

Purdue finally catches a break and wins a close one.

Bold prediction for the game:

Not really a “bold prediction” but Coach Tressel could keep this game close with some ultra-conservative play calling. The score will either be 37-6 or 13-6.

Crazy stat of the game:

Think things are bad in Columbus? Purdue is going into this contest with a 19 game losing streak against Top 25 teams.

Last time they met…

The OSU offense sputtered in a sad looking 16-3 victory in Columbus. Purdue did not allow the Buckeye offense a touchdown.

Boilermaker players to watch:

Senior QB #14 Joey Elliot

Sophomore RB #23 Ralph Bolden

Junior WR #8 Kevin Smith

Senior WR/KR #17 Aaron Valentin

Sophomore K #37 Carson Wiggs

Junior DE #94 Ryan Kerrigan

Senior CB #9 David Pender

Senior DT #92 Mike Neal

The Big Ten has suspended Purdue offensive guard Zach Reckman for Saturday's game against Notre Dame after it reviewed Reckman's late hit at the end of the Northern Illinois game.

Reckman dropped a right forearm on NIU's Sean Progar after Progar recovered a fumble and slid to end Purdue's final desperation play in the Huskies' 28-21 win. NIU's Alex Kube immediately pushed Reckman off Progar, but the situation did not escalate.

Bolden doubled his career rushing total with a monster game Saturday.

Michigan Defense Blows Last Chance For Bowl Game

It's the irony of ironies. The one thing that could be said with any certainty before the 2008 season started was that an experienced Michigan defense would keep the Wolverines in games. Unfortunately, standing at 2-6 and desperately needing a win against Purdue just to keep hopes of a 34th consecutive bowl appearance alive, the Wolverine defense was the very thing to cost Michigan a win.

Toughest Venues: #7 Ross-Ade Stadium

Ross-Ade Stadium sits at #7 on our toughest venues list. Tiller might have the high flying Boilermakers making waves in the Big Ten again, but the venue isn't exactly as intimidating as some of the other gauntlets in the Big Ten.

Indiana University Football: Slightly Improved

Sports have taken a bit of a downward turn in the last few months at Indiana University. First, the beloved football coach died and then a prized basketball recruit went into business for himself, as it were. Never fear, Indiana fan, the football team is here!

Is Wednesday too early to hype up a Saturday matchup? Maybe. Is October too early to start talking bowl berths? Definitely.

Not that it's going to stop us or Yahoo! Sports. The football-playing Hoosiers are 4-1 after beating Iowa on the road 38-20 last week. Mind you, this is one of the most historically hapless major conference teams in football. Things have gotten so bad in recent years that you may not have even known that IU is 4-1 or that they still play football at all. Hell, Lee Corso was actually our coach at one point!

IU has taken advantage of an extremely easy early-season schedule to get to their current record. Their wins have come over Indiana State, Western Michigan, Akron, and Iowa with the one loss coming at home to Illinois. They don't play Michigan or Ohio State this season and have a hapless, 1-4 Minnesota team coming to the crib this weekend. They also have the best quarterback/receiver combo in the conference in Kellen Lewis and James Hardy. That's right, I said it. They're better than Henne to Manningham partially because Michigan runs the ball too much, and partially because the Hoosiers are forced to throw due to the total absence of a running game. Oh and the Hoosiers didn't lose to Appalachian State (yeah references to that game aren't ever going to go away). Still, the point is the Indiana Hoosiers are no longer an easy game for anyone on their schedule. And James Hardy is sick.

Why are we bringing this up, other than because we're homers? Because the Purdue-controlled media want you to notice. They're everywhere, just look at Bob Griese with his shifty eyes and terrible quarterback of a son. They let articles like the Yahoo! Sports one show up early in the season so that the Hoosiers will start to feel the pressure to get that sixth win, thus gaining bowl-eligibility for the first time since 1993. In their perfect world, the Hoosiers' chances at a bowl will come down to the season-ending game against Purdue in Bloomington. Then the Boilermakers will hand the Hoosiers and their fans a painful loss and trot into whatever meaningless bowl they made. This is how Purdue fan thinks, people, they're that petty. It's a vast conspiracy and we won't just sit here and take it. We're blowing the lid off it right here, right now. Down with the Boiler-led media!

So we rebuke those who would hex our Indiana Hoosiers. This is a great start and the team isn't going to get stuck thinking about the future yet. It doesn't matter how many positive articles get written or how good a story the team is since they're playing this season for Terry Hoeppner, they have Minnesota this weekend and that's that. Plus, Purdue is totally getting killed by Ohio State this weekend, Troy Smith or no Troy Smith.

God a bowl game would be awesome. I'd totally go. But we're not thinking about that right now. Nope, not at all.
