Ghana Midfielder Frimpong Out Of June’s 2014 World Cup Qualifiers With Fresh Injury

Emmanuel Frimpong has undergone successful surgery on Wednesday
By Ameenu Shardow
Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong has suffered a fresh injury setback as he has been ruled out for an estimated period of two months with a knee injury, meaning he will not be available for the Black Stars in next month’s 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
The new Ghana international underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to fix the injury.
The 21-year-old was said to have suffered the injury while with Fulham where he spent the remaining half of Premier League season on loan.
This is the second major knee operation Frimpong has undergone.
He suffered a similar injury at the tail end of last season while on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Frimpong made his Black Stars debut in the 4-0 win over Sudan in the 2014 World Cup qualifier two months in Kumasi.
The injury however robs him off a place in the Ghana team for the upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Sudan and Lesotho.
He joins compatriot; Isaac ...

Wolves fire Saunders after relegation to 3rd tier

Wolverhampton Wanderers has reacted to its demotion to English football's third tier by firing manager Dean Saunders.

The club in central England was playing in the Premier League last season but has slipped to back-to-back relegations.

Saunders, a former Wales and Liverpool striker, became Wolves' fourth manager in 12 months when he was hired in January but couldn't halt the team's slide down the League Championship standings. It finished next-to-last after a 2-0 loss at Brighton on Saturday in its final match.

Wolves say Saunders' assistant, Brian Carey, will also be leaving the club.

Setbacks for key Wolves trio

Wolverhampton Wanderers trio Carl Ikeme, Dave Edwards and Bakary Sako all face a battle to play again this season after the injuries picked up against Bristol City on 16 March.

Boss Dean Saunders confirmed Ikeme broke a bone in his hand after punching the tactics board in frustration at half-time, while Sako (hamstring) and Edwards (foot) both limped off before the interval.

All three are now under the guidance of Wolves' medical team, with head Phil Hayward admitting it will be a race against time to have them back before the end of the npower Championship season.

"Bakary suffered a Grade 2 hamstring tear during the first half against Bristol City, and will be sidelined for six to eight weeks," Hayward told the club website.

"Whilst we will be doing everything we can to try and get him back at the lower end of that range, recovery can often take eight weeks so it will be a battle for him to play again this season.

Wolves fire manager Solbakken after cup loss

Wolverhampton Wanderers has fired manager Stale Solbakken after the team was beaten in the FA Cup by non-league side Luton.

The contracts of the former Norway midfielder and two members of his coaching staff were terminated with Wolves only six points above the relegation zone in the second-tier League Championship after being relegated from the English Premier League last season.

Solbakken, who has previously led FC Copenhagen to five Danish titles, took charge at Wolves only last May.

A Wolves statement cited a ''hugely disappointing run of performances and results'' for Solbakken losing his job.

Luton, which plays in the fifth tier, beat Wolves 1-0 on Saturday to reach the FA Cup fourth round.

Wolves wait on Frimpong move

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Stale Solbakken will only consider bringing Emmanuel Frimpong back to the club in January because he is unconvinced by the Arsenal midfielder's current fitness.

The 20-year-old moved to Molineux on loan in the last campaign but was forced to return to his parent club last February after suffering a serious knee ligament injury.

Frimpong is still working his way back towards full fitness and has not been featuring recently for Arsenal's reserve team after suffering another injury.

The midfielder is keen on a loan move in order to get back to playing but, even with captain Karl Henry suspended, Solbakken, who only took over this summer, would just consider a January move.

"The situation is he wants to come to us," said Solbakken in the Express and Star. "But at the moment, he's coming back from the injury he got here.

"He has another small injury now and he hasn't played in Arsenal reserves' last two or three games.

Wolverhampton: How my love affair with the Wolves began

At some point during this season, I hope to take my 7 year old brother, Charlie, to his first Wolves match. He loves the game and, like me, is never happier than when he’s kicking a football around, be it in the school playground, the back garden or the inside of our house!
So, as he closes in on his first trip to the Golden Palace, it got me reminiscing about how, at a similar age, a lifelong commitment was made as my love affair with Wolves began. It was no smooth passage, given I was unable to resist an early glory-hunting infatuation with Manchester United, not to mention having West Bromwich Albion embedded deeply into my genes, my great grandfather having played professionally for our most hated rivals!
At my brother’s age, I had been obsessed with football, and as a youngster who knew no better, latched on to the team that were winning the most at that time which, of course, were Man United. I would proudly go around telling my mates and members of my family that I was the...

Moxey warning for Wolves fans

Wolverhampton Wanderers chief executive Jez Moxey has warned fans that things may get worse before they get better at Molineux.

Stale Solbakken's side have won just one of their opening four Championship fixtures on their return to the second tier, and are yet to keep a clean sheet this term.

Moxey acknowledges that the departures of Michael Kightly, Matt Jarvis, Steven Fletcher, and assistant manager Terry Connor, have created an unstable atmosphere.

Moxey told the Express and Star: "It may need to get worse before it gets better and maybe people need to understand that.

"We have to be realistic about what we can achieve given the scale of change. We have seen that some foreign players take longer to settle compared to their British counterparts, and that is natural.

He added: "I wouldn't say we are relaxed about the situation because we are never relaxed when we lose."

Bolton Wanderers Relegated from English Premier League

While Manchester City were being crowned Champions of the English Premier League there was something much sadder happening as Bolton Wanderers were confirmed as the third and final team to be relegated from England’s top flight this season.
It was tight, but even though QPR lost and Bolton drew away to Stoke, 2-2, the Trotters were the ones to be officially declared as a Championship side for the 2012/13 season.
In a day that would bruise the common sense of any onlooker the permutations changed over and again as the minutes ticked by. Bolton were winning and would have stayed up, but then QPR took a lead. Stoke equalized and all was certain for Rangers, but then City came back.
In the end a draw saw Bolton fall down a division.
The phrase ‘trap door’ is being used over and over again, but by the same measure that City deserved to win the title, Bolton deserved to be relegated. They had been too substandard for too much of the season.
They join Blackburn Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the fall fr

Wolves hire Stale Solbakken as new manager

Wolverhampton Wanderers has hired former Cologne coach Stale Solbakken to take charge of the club following its relegation from the English Premier League.

The 44-year-old Solbakken led FC Copenhagen to five Danish titles before joining Cologne a year ago. But the former Norway midfielder was fired last month by Cologne, which was relegated from the Bundesliga last weekend.

Wolves central defender Roger Johnson told Sky Sports News: ''I don't know who the guy is to be honest. It is out of the blue.''

Terry Connor, who has been in charge of Wolves since Mick McCarthy was fired in February, will lead the team in its final match in the topflight on Sunday at Wigan before standing down.

Wolves will play in the League Championship next season.

Blackburn relegated after 1-0 home loss to Wigan

Blackburn joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in being relegated from the Premier League after losing 1-0 at home to Wigan, which ensured its survival with a sixth win from its past eight matches on Monday.

Blackburn needed to win to have any chance of staying up but Wigan defender Antolin Alcaraz scored with an 87th-minute header from a corner that sealed both teams' fate.

The hosts had earlier had a penalty appeal turned down by the referee when Junior Hoilett was brought down by Emmerson Boyce.

There were ugly scenes at the final whistle when some Blackburn fans ran onto Ewood Park. Earlier, a chicken was released onto the field, a pointed reminder of the home supporters' antipathy toward owner Venky's, a chicken-meat company.

Wolverhampton Wanderers avoided its 10th straight Premier League defeat at home on Sunday, drawing 0-0 with Everton and getting its first point at Molineux since December.

Wolves fight back to draw 4-4 with Swansea

Relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers showed some Premier League fight a little too late by recovering from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 at Swansea in a frenetic game on Saturday.

Andrea Orlandi headed Swansea ahead after 22 seconds - the fastest Premier League goal since September 2006 - and further strikes from Joe Allen and Nathan Dyer made it 3-0 after just 15 minutes.

In a chaotic first half, Steven Fletcher pulled one back with a header before Danny Graham restored the three-goal cushion in the 31st, but Matt Jarvis made it 4-2 before half time.

Dave Edwards reduced the deficit further in the 54th and Jarvis completed an unlikely comeback for the already relegated visitors with a close-range finish in the 69th.

United's 4-4 draw at home to Everton hours earlier gave City the chance to put the title race in its own hands once again and it didn't pass up the opportunity.

Sergio Aguero scored a well-taken opener in the 27th minute and after City weathered some Wolves pressure at the start of the second half, Samir Nasri made the points safe in the 74th.

The two Manchester clubs meet at the Etihad Stadium on April 30, a home match City may have to win if the club is to end its 44-year wait for the league title.

City manager Roberto Mancini has declared for the past two weeks that the title race is over after a recent blip saw the longtime leaders fall five points behind United, but it is all to play for now.

The pressure was on City after United's unexpected result against Everton and they handled it well against a side that had to w

Arsenal: One Gunner’s Respectful Apologies to Manager Arsene Wenger

By Alex Baker
Arsenal tightened their grip on third Wednesday with a comfortable away win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
With this being their 10th win in 11 Premier League outings, many of those who were calling for Arsene Wenger‘s head a few weeks ago are sitting down to a healthy serving of crow just about now.
Even Piers Morgan, the most high profile Gooner this side of the Atlantic, has changed the timbre of his Arsenal-related Tweets. Morgan, who was one of the loudest voices demanding Wenger be ousted just a few weeks ago, today Tweeted:
“Brilliant win. What a crazy season. Kudos to those Gooners who kept the faith when many, like me, were losing it.”
Mr. Morgan was certainly not alone in questioning his faith in the French manager. Many soccer journalists, pundits and bloggers, myself included, were both mystified and frustrated by Wenger’s seeming inability to change course or tactics.

Fulham routs Wolves 5-0 in Premier League

Pavel Pogrebnyak's hat trick and Clint Dempsey's double steered Fulham to a 5-0 rout of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday in the Premier League.

Pogrebnyak took his goal tally to five in three games since joining on loan from Stuttgart in January while Dempsey now has 12 for the season.

A third straight win lifted Martin Jol's Fulham to eighth as Wolves slipped back into the bottom three.

Fulham's opener came through Pogrebnyak's header from Damien Duff's corner in the 36th minute and his second before the break was a powerful right-foot finish from Andrew Johnson's cross.

Either side of Dempsey's goals, Pogrebnyak completed his hat trick in the 61st. Wayne Hennessey could only parry Johnson's shot and the Russian turned home the rebound.

Lampard secures 2-1 win for Chelsea at Wolves

Frank Lampard relieved the pressure on Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas by securing a 2-1 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

Chelsea dropped out of the Premier League's top four on Saturday after losing to Aston Villa and relied on Lampard's late winner from close range to secure maximum points again.

Ramires had put Chelsea in front in the 54th minute, holding off Stephen Ward's challenge before firing the ball into the roof of the net, but Ward leveled in the 84th.

The loss left Wolves just two points above the relegation zone.
