Romania orders retrial of football officials

Bucharest's highest court has ordered a retrial in the case of eight Romanian football officials who were sentenced to prison for tax evasion and money laundering in connection with the transfer of 12 players over a six-year period.

The court on Monday overturned ''in totality'' an appeals court sentencing in November when Rapid Bucharest chairman George Copos, Dinamo Bucharest executive chairman Cristi Borcea and agents Ioan Becali and Victor Becali were sentenced to between five and eight years. The officials all appealed.

The appeals court will now retry the case, which involves players who transferred from Dinamo, Rapid, Otelul Galati and Gloria Bistrita to foreign clubs from 1999 to 2005. Prosecutors said the state lost ?1.7 million ($2.16 million) in taxes and the clubs lost ?10 million ($12.8 million) because the officials registered fictitious sums in the books.

Romania: A Gold Mine for Top Talent and Brilliant Prospects

Romania have been unlucky in recent years – poor results in tournaments and qualifications or just missing out due to stupid mistakes made by the manager and players have cost them. Despite beating the likes of England, Spain, Netherlands, Germany (Romania beat them 5-1 in 2005) on several occasions in recent years.
There’s always been something – or in fact, many things – stopping them from reaching their potential. Player’s mentalities, awful selections and tactics made by managers, and the most talented players wasting their potential for various reasons are all part of the reason Romania are now seen as just a somewhat average side nowadays.
As this article is meant to be about Romanian youth, let’s not go into too much detail over those issues. While the 80s and 90s were a special time for Romanian football (both club-wise and for the national team), it’s possible that this upcoming generation could bring Romania back to being the world class side it used to be.
That is, if tho...

United set to unleash Rooney, Van Persie on Cluj

Six weeks into the season, it may finally be time for Manchester United to unleash the mouth-watering strike partnership of Wayne Rooney and offseason signing Robin van Persie for the first time.

With Rooney fit after a month out with a gashed leg, United manager Alex Ferguson has the luxury of partnering his top two strikers for Wednesday's Champions League match at Cluj.

''Probably the strongest part of the club will be in the striker department,'' said Ferguson, who also has England international Danny Welbeck and Mexico forward Javier Hernandez as options up front. ''It (Van Persie's arrival from Arsenal) should give everyone a push.''

Not only might the Romanian outsiders have to deal with two of the world's best strikers in tandem, they also have to face the wrath of a team desperate to make amends from a sloppy 3-2 loss to Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday.

That 3-2 defeat showed that while United may have one of the most devastating strike-forc

2012/13 UEFA Champions League: My Predictions

The beginning of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions’ League group stage is nearly upon us with many football fans in the world buzzing with excitement. As we head into the match day 1 fixture there are many questions on the lips of football fans across the globe.
Can Chelsea become the first team in the Champions League era to retain the trophy? Which teams will progress from each group? Whose skills will set the football world alight?
In this article, I’ll be giving my thoughts on various aspects of this season’s UEFA Champions League.

Favourites- Real Madrid

Ever since Jose Mourinho became the Real Madrid manager back in the summer of 2010, many pundits and fans have been predicting the Spanish champions to win Europe’s biggest prize.
Now in previous years, I personally haven’t predicted Madrid to win the tournament, but this year I think it’s their time.
After winning La Liga for the first time since the 2006/07 season, last season that winning feeling finally returned to the Spanish c...

Fergie issues United warning

United are expected to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition after being drawn alongside Braga, Galatasaray and CFR Cluj in Group H.

However, the United boss is conscious that his side were predicted to make round two last year after being given another favourable draw against Benfica, Basel and Otelul Galati, however we all know what happened there, and for that reason, he insists his squad cannot afford any slip-ups this time around.

Ferguson, who has bolstered his squad since last season by signing Robin van Persie, is also aware that his team will find it extremely hard to come through the test of playing in a very hostile environment in Turkey when facing Galatasaray.

"We have the experience of playing against Galatasaray in the past and we will always remember the 'Welcome to Hell' banners," Ferguson told ManUtd.com.

"So it's always a difficult type of match.

"We have drawn Portuguese clubs a number of times over the past few years - the likes of Benfica

Is the EPL really the "World's Greatest League"?

Manchester United, and English football in general, were really shown in their true form this week. We have listened, for some time now, to the condescending drivel coming from Sky Sports and BBC pundits about how English football is the best in the world and their dismissive views of teams from Italy, Germany and Spain. They talk about the rough and tumble of the Premier League and how no other league can rival its entertainment etc, etc. Well I, for one, was extremely entertained by Athletic Club Bilbao's dismantling of what is a weak Manchester United team. United were completely outclassed and had no answers for the slick passing, superior technique and intense work rate Athletic showed from the first whistle to the last. But this was no shock. As an enthusiastic viewer of Spanish football, Athletic have impressed me time and again with their approach to the game. The club underwent some transition last summer, with a presidential election placing former player Josu Urrutia a...
