If healthy and not reeking of booze, Michael Pineda will make a great Yankee this summer in the Bronx

Consistently hitting 93 mph on the radar, New York Yankees flamethrower Michael Pineda tossed five innings on Thursday afternoon in an extended spring training start. Shelved since undergoing the knife last May to fix a torn anterior labral in his right shoulder, the 24-year-old Pineda reported no concerns and is expected to soon partake in a minor league rehab assignment. Acquired from Seattle for Jesús Montero and Héctor Noesí in January 2012, the 6-foot-7, 260 pound Dominican threw a fastball averaging 94.7 mph as a Mariners rookie in 2011. Largely thanks to Andy Pettitte, CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda and the … Continue reading →

Cashman's prayers are answered: Seattle scorns Jesus, as Pineda resurrection looms

Well - as Steve Jobs said to Bill Gates - you never what to believe when you cut a deal with somebody from Seattle. All last year, the Jesus Montero trade - (I believe I called it "the debacle") - looked like a long range Yankee death and the reason to - as Hunter Thompson would say - stuff Brian Cashman into a bottle and put him out with the Japanese tide. Today, vindication - maybe? The Mariners sent Montero to Triple A, where he increasingly looks like the ghost of Sam Horn, the man, not the website. The guy wasn't hitting or playing well at catcher. He'll now DH, play 1B and try to forget the seven years of idolitry that was bestowed upon him by the Yankiverse, while he climbed through the system, apparently neglecting the finer points of defense, despite the warnings by his coaches. Hector Noesi, a disaster last year for Seattle, recently shut us down for several innings in a Mariner victory. He is now Seattle's jewel of the trade.Michael Pineda - aka &quo...

A-Rod a budding real estate mogul?

Injured Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez already rakes in more dough than any player in baseball, earning $30 million a year for playing -- or, this year, not playing -- like a shell of his former self. And as it turns out, A-Rod also has a pretty good real estate racket going, too.

According to TMZ , the 37-year-old Rodriguez, who has been on the DL all season following January hip surgery, recently sold his nearly-20,000 square foot Miami mansion for a whopping $30 million, netting himself a profit of $15 million.

Rodriguez reportedly purchased the sprawling estate for $7.4 million in 2010. Then after putting in $7.6 million into renovating it, Rodriguez listed the nine-bedroom, 11-bath palace for $38 million in August. (It's a shame he had to settle for such a lowball offer.)

Here are a few photos, via TMZ , of what you could have gotten for the equivalent of one year of A-Rod's salary:

It's currently not known who the buyer is -- TMZ says it's a celebrity from Palm Beach -- but acc

Jeter uses 'Philip' alias for Starbucks order

I can't quite put my finger on it, but this "Philip" character looks familiar. According to the New York Post, Derek Jeter was spotted leaving a Greenwich Village Starbucks with the name "Philip" on the side. Which means one of three things...the New York Yankees captain is still using a pseudonym when in public (he used to go by "Johnny Drama" while on the road), the barista on duty got his name wrong or, simply, dude walked out with someone else's brew. And Yankees fans, don't think that just because Jeter is out walking around bootless in New York getting a warm beverage, the shortstop is ready to head back to the diamond. Last anyone reported, there is still no timetable set for his return. Perhaps "Philip" is available.

Derek Jeter Appears to Use Fake Name ‘Philip’ to Get Coffee at Starbucks (Photo)

Could a grande blonde French Vanilla get Derek Jeter back to baseball before the All-Star break? Who knows what Jeter’s favorite coffee is, or how his rehab from his broken ankle is progressing. There is now photographic evidence, however, that Jeter stopped by Starbucks the other day, and he walked off with a coffee designated for “Philip.” Whether Jeter was stealing some unsuspecting patron’s hot beverage, taking a treat back to teammate Phil Hughes or accidentally revealing his secret name will be tough to figure out. But if you’re ever in New York and see a dead ringer for Derek Jeter that answers to Philip, move in for an autograph, OK? Check out Jeter grabbing his drink in the photo below, with a hat tip to BuzzFeed. Photo via Twitter/alsboringtweets

Derek Jeter uses phony name 'Philip' to get coffee at Starbucks

Being New York's most recognizable sports celebrity didn't stop Derek Jeter from trying the the old phony name ruse to pick up a cup of coffee at a Starbucks Wednesday afternoon.

The Yankee shortstop was spotted yesterday leaving one of the coffee chain’s locations in Greenwich Village with a cup suspiciously marked with the name “Philip,” reports The New York Post.

The Yankee captain may have been trying to go incognito as he picked up a cup of joe but even his horizontal pinstriped T-shirt couldn't throw off the over-caffeinated hipsters.

Good thing he wasn't wearing his walking boot — that would have been a dead giveaway.

It wouldn’t be the first time he’s operated under an alias, so it must have worked before.

In 2007, The Smoking Gun Web site published a bill that showed the currently injured baseball star used the pseudonym “Johnny Drama” — an apparent reference to the HBO show “Entourage” — to check into a Seattle hotel with his teammates.

Adams Has A Winning At Bat In A Losing Effort

On Wednesday night rotation stalwart Hiroki Kuroda had an injury shortened and ineffective outing, and rookie reliever Preston Claiborne finally showed some vulnerability as the Yankees fell to their A.L. East division rivals, the Baltimore Orioles. On a good note, however, David Adams, the rookie 3B, provided a spark of optimism. The Yankees had seven hits last night, half that of their opponents, but the most satisfying of those came in the top of the ninth inning: a home run by Adams. The scene was depressing enough, with the Yankees down 6-2 and rain coming down, sending the fans in Camden Yards scrambling for cover. All fans, that is, except the hardy group that started a loud and cheerful "Yankees Suck" chant that came through clearly on the YES Network telecast. For a ballpark that can be mistaken for Yankee Stadium South, especially in the summer, the chants made for painful listening. With a 6-2 lead and side-winding, sub-2.00 ERA lefty Darren O'Day ...

credit: getty images
New York Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda left after two innings of work Wednesday night. Kuroda allowed five runs on eight hits, including two home runs.
Kuroda left the game with an injury. Announcers on ESPN have speculated that Kuroda has an injury to his back but it is worth nothing that he was hit in the calf by a comebacker in the second.
Entering Wednesday night Kuroda has a 2.67 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.

Looking To Kuroda Takes The Sting Out Of Last Night's Yankees Loss

Ah, what a comfort it is to know that, after a tough extra inning walk-off loss last night in Baltimore, the Yankees have their ace pitching in the rubber game tonight. But wait, you might be saying, CC Sabathia pitched in the first game of the series, right?Yes, but who said CC was the ace of the pitching staff? If you really think CC Sabathia is the Yankees ace, you've been asleep since the season began. The real ace of the Yankees pitching staff is Hiroki Kuroda. As he proved last season, making the transition from pitching in the NL West to pitching in the AL East doesn't have to be as hard as everyone says it is. Since he began his Yankee career he has put up better numbers than he did with the Los Angeles Dodgers. His record after four years with LA was 41-46 with a 3.45 ERA. Since last season with the Yankees, he is 22-13 with a 3.04 ERA. Really, it's supposed to be the other way around, but Kuroda has bucked that trend. When Kuroda arrived for his first Yankee Sp...

Yankees: Do you think Vernon Wells is an All-Star because I certainly do

Plain and simple, the New York Yankees would not be boosting a 28-17 record.
Vernon Wells in 2009 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Nor would the Bronx Bombers be sitting pretty atop in the AL East.
And you can bet they wouldn’t have the third best record in the Majors without one thing?
The outstanding play of Vernon Wells.
This by no means takes away from the overall chemistry this makeshift group has as a team, but you cannot deny that Wells is a mainstay.
Nor does this have anything to do with the recent Yankees loss.
And yes, I am referring to yesterday evening’s 10th inning, walk-off, 3-2 beating the Bombers got courtesy of the Orioles down in Charm City.
This only has to do with Wells getting snubbed from a well-earned 2013 AL All-Star nomination.
The outlandishness of his absence is even crazier when you see Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira‘s names when neither has played an inning this season. And no offense but Curtis Granderson was just activated a week ago and has not shown anythin...

Preston Claiborne Continues to Impress with Yankees

In a season that can be labeled as a surprise for the New York Yankees, a season where they find themselves atop the AL East division standings nearly two months into the season, a part of that surprise is rookie reliever Preston Claiborne.
Since his call-up on May 5 to replace an injured Joba Chamberlain in the bullpen, Claiborne has pitched phenomenally for New York.
In six appearances this month, Claiborne boasts an untouched 0.00 ERA in 8.0 innings of work, to go along with five strikeouts and no walks allowed.
Claiborne was drafted in the 17th round of the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft out of Tulane University by the New York Yankees and has spent the past four seasons (including 2013) across New York’s farm system, posting a cumulative 3.00 ERA in 204.1 innings of relief work.
Throughout his time in the minors, Claiborne posted a 199/79 strikeout to walk ratio, giving rise to possible concerns over his command and control of pitches.
Despite his walk rate in the minors, Claiborne has...

Yankees' Mark Teixeira takes first at-bats since injury

Mark Teixeira first announced the fact that he had taken some good at-bats via his Twitter account yesterday. The team then confirmed his progress and prognosis. They are still guarded about his potential return date, but for Teixeira to take some swings for the first time since his wrist injury is a good thing.

Felt good to get my first AB's since March. 1-2 with a double and a walk, I'll take it. #Yankees in first place, I'll take that too!
— Mark Teixeira (@teixeiramark25) May 20, 2013

Bryan Hoch of MLB.com says manager Joe Girardi and GM Brian Cashman are still cautious about Teixeira's progress. Cashman acknowledges that a lot can still go wrong, and the team must take it day by day with Teixeira. Girardi said Teixeira will continue to hit in simulated games so he can get a feel for hitting from both sides of the plate.

Teixeira suffered a wrist injury while preparing to play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic this spring. He has yet t...

The Yankees are about to become the most ungrateful team in sports, and I am now dreading the return of the superstar lineup

Damn. I feel like the cad who falls for his best friend's fiance, while the guy is off at the Star Fleet Academy. I keep telling myself, "No, this is NOT happening! I'll break it off! I'm am not falling for Brian's girl!" Then the girl - her name is Lyle - homers in the seventh, and you can't take your eyes off her, and later, you're together in the back of team bus, and you're tearing the buttons from her jersey and-OK, you get my point, right? I'm in love with Lyle Overbay! There! I've said it! The forbidden truth! We want to get married! We want to adopt! But his boyfriend's back, and there's gonna be trouble, hey-na, hey-na... Listen: It's weird, rooting for this Yankee team. It's unlike anything we have seen since 1994. It's like 1983, the crash year, except we're winning. Last night, Lyle, Travis Hafner and Vernon Wells stole another victory with the kind of clutch hitting that, frankly, our big stars failed...

Yankees: Can Hughes redeem himself vs. Orioles

Phil Hughes during pregame warmups prior to a game between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles on August 29, 2011 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
After finally earning my semi-endorsement, Yankees starter Phil Hughes went on to have his worst outing yet.
Hughes couldn’t muster enough to get through the first inning in his last outing vs. the Mariners.
He got tagged for seven earned runs in two-thirds of an inning at home before getting yanked.
Kindly, whether this is for my ego or not, I am giving Hughes a pass.
Of course would mean Hughes gets back to the efficient starter he was prior to the disaster, tonight against the Orioles.
It won’t be easy, as Camden Yard is a hitter’s park aka. a bandbox in Baltimore.
Plus the O’s bats have had a good amount of success against him in the past.
Here are the Hughes career stats vs. the active Oriole hitters (all courtesy of baseball-reference.com): (more…)

Yankees Game 44: Hafner & Wells Clip the Birds

The Assassin (Photo: Wiki Commons)
New York Yankees 6–Baltimore Orioles 4
Where would we be without Travis Hafner and Vernon Wells?
Once again, it was the two off-season acquisitions who came up with the big hits, powering the Yanks to their 12th come-from-behind victory of the season. Down 4-3 in the 9th, Hafner blasted a game-tying, opposite-field shot to left field, providing fodder for yet another Yankee-themed nightmare for Baltimore’s closer, Josh Johnson. After a scoreless 9th inning from David Robertson, Wells plated Ichiro Suzuki on a ground-rule double to left to give the Bombers a 5-4 edge in the 10th. Later in the inning Hafner drove in Wells on a single to right field to provide the final margin.
The Bombers got on the board in the opening frame against former Yankee Freddy Garcia when Robinson Cano sent his 13th home run of the season 390 feet into the left field stands. An inning later David Adams had a solo act of his own, sending his first Major League home run down the left field line to

Teixeira plays in first extended spring game

Mark Teixeira is starting to inch towards a return, as he is finally playing in extended spring training games. Teixeira went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, according to his twitter feed.
Teix is aiming to be activated on May 31st, however the Yankees may take things slow which could push back his return to early June. Manager Joe Girardi has said that Teix’s rehab assignment will take longer than Curtis Granderson’s, who only appeared in a handful of minor league games.
Lyle Overbay, who is hitting .259 with six homers and 24 RBIs, could possibly be the odd-man out when Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis eventually return.
Felt good to get my first AB’s since March. 1-2 with a double and a walk, I’ll take it. #Yankees in first place, I’ll take that too!

What to Reid into the Yanks newest addition.

Yesterday the Yankees acquired versatile infielder Reid Brignac from the Colorado Rockies for cash. Yes, the Yankees have an obvious lack on infield depth with Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Mark Texiera and Kevin Youkilis currently calling the disabled list their primary position.
Brignac is a career .228 hitter with a .294 OBP. In his six year career, he’s only amassed 769 career big league at-bats with the majority of those coming in 2010 and 2011 in which he had 590 abs in those combined years.

To this point, with mostly limited playing time, Brignac’s performance has been underwhelming. However, his numbers compare to that of a current Yankee.
Another Yankee player has a career batting average of .215 and a OBP of .288. This Yankee’s best years were back in 2009 and 2010. He also is a versatile infielder. Can you guess who he is? The answer is Jayson Nix. If Brignac could provide the same production Nix has, he may very well be valuable to the bombers until the team can return to full strength.

Yankees: Teixeira causing an Overbay problem

No one hypothesized that the New York Yankees would be anything less than joyful and relieved to get back their wounded superstars.

Of course, no one assumed this haphazard army of reserves would be winning enough games to be atop of the AL East either. You can check out available MLB future odds to see that the Yankees are now one of the favorites to win the 2013 World Series, a spot this team was far from just six weeks ago.
Everyone getting this team wrong doesn’t change the fact the Yankees are now in a pickle. Some might even call it a catch-22, as their pricey stars start getting healthy.
Curtis Granderson came off the DL earlier this week, which gives skipper Joe Girardi some relief in the outfield.
Granderson has played his whole career in centerfield but was started in left.
This essentially would put Vernon Wells out of a job he has d...
