Ruck Futgers

So my UMBC Retrievers men's lacrosse team takes on the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers tomorrow. I've declared this Ruck Futgers week.

This is not an uncommon sentiment for me.

I believe I've spoken before about hos USF doesn't have a true archrival, but there are a few schools, particularly in conference, that really get under my skin. Rutgers is one of them. Losing to them in football the past couple years (especially two years ago with the "illegal forward propulsion" and all the other shit that tok place in that game), their recruiting billboards down in Florida, and most recently, them stealing the FIU game from us, forcing us to pick up a second FCS team to round out our schedule certainly add to these feelings. So when I say Ruck Futgers, I say it from the heart.

This is the second installment of the Master Coaches Poll Blog. I am one of seventeen Master Coaches, starting our third season, that make up the panel of voters on the Master Coaches Poll. South Florida's Cinderella story appears to have ended. They had a great start, beating Auburn on the road and knocking off a Top 5 West Virginia team for the second year in a row, but they came up a little short at Rutgers. Coach Jim Leavitt was on my staff as a Graduate Assistant at Iowa. He is a heck of a coach and has done a fantastic job in building that program from scratch. The "IT" factor can't be defined, wrapped up with a pretty bow or calculated through statistics. The IT factor is what it is. Some guys have it and some guys don't and even the ones that do will faulter from time to time. Matt Grothe reminds me of a slower Jake "the snake" Plummer. Plummer had it, especially in college. Lee Roy Selmon graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1975 with a degree in Special Education and membership in the National Honor Society. He also won the Outland Trophy and Vince Lombardi Award. Selmon was the first-ever draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played until 1986, when he retired from the Bucs. His No. 63 is the Bucs only retired jersey. After being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, he joined the University of South Florida as an Associate Athletic Director of External Affairs. In 1995, he entered the NFL Hall of Fame, the first former Sooner and only Tampa Bay Buccaneer to date. USF's Grothe Sells Beer To Minor; A Bigger Problem?

The St. Petersberg Times reports that University of South Florida quarterback Matt Grothe, the Big East Rookie of the Year in 2006, was arrested and received a misdemeanor charge of selling alcohol to a minor on April 19th at the Bull Ring Sports Bar, an off campus USF-themed sports bar where Grothe apparently works as a bartender.

This bowl has definitely earned the right to be called the worst named bowl in history. Honestly, papajohns.com bowl? Papa John's sucks enough, the fact that a bowl is named after their website is just discouraging. The sad thing is, the game probably won't be a whole lot better than the name, pitting South Florida v. East Carolina.
