The last word about Marshall....almost, maybe

So, looking back at Saturday, I wanted to think for a minute or two about our offense in particular. It was in many ways a flashback offense. BG had 20 official running attempts, but nine of those were Tyler Sheehan either being sacked or scrambling for a yard, which means that we actually had 11 running attempts and 71 passing attempts. This is amazing to me. It is the kind of ratio BG used to drag out against MSU or Minnesota, or some team we absolutely couldn't manage on the front line....

Marshall Recap

Ok, with a few hours to reflect, here's some thoughts on the disappointing result from Huntington. I think this was a winnable game and it is disappointing to come out without a win.In the post-game interview, Coach Clawson certainly sounded testy. Of course, if someone asked me three times about Albert McClellan I might have been a little short too. Anyway, it was nothing by Gregg Brandon standards, but he was clearly frustrated, which is OK.As far as game flow goes, BG hit a 50 yard pas...

Marshall Football: A Lesson to Learn for Head Coach Mark Snyder

In my years of attending college, out of all my classes, one has stuck with me. That class was an American history class. The professor told a story of a United States president in the early years of the republic.

The media had been lambasting the chief executive and his sons decided to take things into their own hands by assaulting the journalists at the capitol. Of course, this did not stop them from continuing to print stories about the president.

The lesson, of course, was t...

Anderson's Good Week One for the Herd

Despite the questions, and the detractors, Brian Anderson came out and had a career performance for Marshall University against Southern Illinois.
Granted he has had a short career and a rocky one at that. Then there is also the glaringly true statement that the start was against a Football Championship Subdivision opponent. After you set aside those points and ignore the first few minutes of the contest and the interception, Anderson looked good. Once one eliminated the previously stated quali...

50 Best of the Non-BCS: Number 37

#37: DE Albert McClellan, Marshall

The Verdict: At 6-foot-2, 252-pounds, Marshall defensive end Albert McClellan may just be one of the best defenders in Conference-USA. Named to the All-Conference freshmen team during his rookie season in 2005, McClellan was a one man-wrecking crew for the Thundering Herd in 2006 en route to earning Conference-USA Defensive Player [...]

Week Number 8 Deathrattlesports.com NCAA D-1 Bottom 5 Ranking

Well at least the Bottom 5 has returned to a normal state. There was only one change in the rankings for this week as my "debuting" team North Texas rose up from the throngs of defeat to snatch a victory from Louisiana Monroe 31 to 21. You will have to read through my entire article to see which team replaced the "Mean Green", it is a minor surprise, but shouldn't really be a TOTAL SHOCK to anyone who reads this weekly piece. So without further ado, I give you the "weak" 8 bottom feeders.

Number 1 - Florida International "yellow cats" - Stretched their streak to 19 straight and cemented their ranking as number 1 with a 34 - 16 defeat at the hands of the Sun Belt conference leader Troy. Next up is fellow conference power hose Louisiana Monroe who was able to smell it up in their loss to previous number 2 North Texas. Could be an upset in the making, and if so Louisiana Monroe could be cracking this ranking.

Number 2 - Marshall "bumbling heard" - Extended their record to 0-6 on the season with a squeeker of a loss (38-31) over Tulsa. They are making Byron Leftwich and Chad Pennington proud. Next loss at home to Southern Mississippi.

Number 3 - Colorado State "lambs" - Brings the second longest losing streak to 13 with a 45-21 defeat at the hands of the Air Force Academy. Next loss on the road to UNLV, although the Rebels won't put up too much of a fight.

Number 4 - Utah State "maggies" - Had their scare this past Saturday putting up 37 points against the University of Hawaii, although they did give up 52 to the "rainbows". Makes you wonder if Hawaii is overrated after all. Next loss will be Saturday to Nevada.

Number 5 - Nebraska "quiters" - Yes you see it here a 4-3 team in the bottom 5 that has previously been reserved for winless teams. Well I decided that "tin-man" teams (no heart) need to be included also, so here they are. I have already given my opinion on what needs to be done at the top of this once proud program. Never in their history of 118 years have they allowed 4 different teams to score 40 or more points against them, let alone lose homecoming by a score of 45-14. Next loss against Texas A & M, once again at home.

Peaking in this week is Notre Dame and Louisiana Monroe. See you next week...

Week 7 Deathrattle Sports NCAA Division 1 Bottom 5 Rankings

I am totally, totally BUMED out. My number 1 team has finally won a game and by virtue of that victory gets removed from the bottom 5. DAMN YOU ucla, that's right, you bruins don't even get to be capitalized, loosing at home to the golden domers. Also coming off the critical list were the Rice Owls, who were able to stave off Southern Mississippi with the help of 7 turnovers. The Temple Owls also squeaked out a one point victory and are gone. But there's no need to fear, other "totally horrible" teams are ready to step up and claim a spot. So here without further ado, is my new Bottom 5 Ranking.

1.Florida International "yellow cats" ? Now have an 18 game streak going and can finally stop sending me letters that by virtue of this streak, that THEY deserved to be NUMBER 1 over Notre Dame. FIU actually led during the first quarter of their loss against Troy, which really disappointed their fans but then they put it into reverse and came out the losers 34-15. Next loss, on the road to Louisiana-Monroe who is an impressive 1-4.

2.North Texas "lame green" ? Debuting at number 2 is quite impressive and will no doubt cause complaints from the Marshall fans, but consider this, they were destroyed by previously winless Louisiana-Lafayette 38 to 29. For the season the Green has been outscored 258 to 97 or an average game of 52-19, to run their record to an impressive 0-5 SWEET! Next loss will be to Louisiana Monroe.

3. Marshall "bumbling "heard" ? Lost to Memphis 24-21 in a nail-bitter Saturday. With their 0 and 5 start their average game is 38-19, which is why North Texas gets the nod over them for the number 2 spot in this list. Next loss will be at Tulsa on Saturday.

4. Colorado State "lambs ? Now carries a 12 game losing streak second longest in the country including 0-5 this season with their loss to San Diego State. There 30-23 average score is not quite as impressive as the other members of the bottom 5 and I believe they will be the next to leave this list. Next loss Air Force.

5. Utah State "maggies" ? They were one of the first team this season to reach the magical 0-6 mark thanks to the Notre Dame fiasco against UCLA. They are impressive with an average losing game of 36-19. Next loss for them will be in 2 weeks against Nevada.

On the outside looking in: UCLA, Notre Dame, Nebraska and Texas.

On another "Serious Loser" note; the number 1 & 2 teams on my listing actually play in the same conference, the Sun Belt. Not only that, but 5 of the 8 teams in the conference have a record of 1-4 or worse, making the Sun Belt, by far the worse conference in NCAA D-1 Football. WOW!
