Tuesday Night Odds & Ends

A few things I missed over the afternoon...

Russell Branyan has rejected a one-year offer from the Mariners, a one-year offer that, via Larry Stone, included a 2011 option. Branyan says that, while he'd love to stay in Seattle, he's holding out for a multiyear deal that gives him some semblance of stability, a goal that makes a lot of sense when you consider that he and his wife just had another kid. He's tired of moving around.I feel for him. Branyan's never deserved t...

Branyan: "I don't feel like I'm going anywhere"

I just got off the phone with Russell Branyan -- his new baby girl was quiet during the conversation -- and he remains quite hopeful of working out a deal with the Mariners despite turning down the M's one-year offer, which he said included an option for a second year.

Branyan seeking multi-year deal

When Russell Branyan signed with the Seattle Mariners last winter I was as ecstatic as anyone. The reason was because the Mariners were considering Branyan as their everyday first basemen and despite his strike out numbers Branyan can hit the ball as far as anyone.
Well he didn’t disappoint last season and actually excelled as a [...]

From Joel Sherman (NY Post):
The other great starter who could become available is Seattle’s Felix Hernandez. But Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said: “Felix is our property for the next two years. He’s one of the best going in the game and we look forward to having him.”

So, MLB’s best defensive player of 2009, Franklin Gutierrez, didn’t win the Gold Glove award. Worse yet, all around inferior baseball player and former Mariner Adam Jones took home the award instead. Luckily, one of the perks to being a Mariners fan is having the sublime USS Mariner around to talk us irrational [...]

Points Of Contention: Rob Johnson's Defense

Writing is easier when you don't have to think up an intro.
In terms of things we know we can measure pretty well, Rob Johnson the defender doesn't stand out, at least not in a good way.

His error rate, for whatever that's worth, is about average. His four in 754.1 innings matches up well with the league-average rate of 6.1 per 1000.
His arm is decent. He's thrown out 20 of 71 would-be base-stealers - a rate of 28.2% - against a 27.6% league average.
He kind of sucks...
