No spark from Wil Myers in doubleheader sweep

Well, Wil Myers made his debut for the Rays Tuesday. Unfortunately, his bat did not. In a doubleheader in Boston against the Red Sox, the young rookie did not provide much offensive help. In the first game at Fenway, Wil Myers went 0-4 with one strikeout. In Game 2, he went 1-3 with a single. In his first two games at Durham, he went 3-8. A jump from the minors to the majors is not a simple transition for many ball players. However, many were expecting Myers to be a difference maker right away. He will come around but just like others, he needs time. And Tuesday provided just his first seven at-bats in the big leagues. Rays lost by a score of 5-1 in Game 1 and 3-1 in Game 2. Wil Myers and the Rays will have another shot at Boston Wednesday before heading to New York for four games against the Yankees.

'Wil' Myers Help Tampa Bay's Anemic Offense?

Rays Phenom Wil MyersOne of the most interesting aspects of the upcoming "three games in two days" love fest between Boston and Tampa will be the Fenway debut of the Rays' Uber-Prospect Wil Myers. Myers was the centerpiece of the trade that sent James Shields to Kansas City, and he will now be expected to pump up Tampa's paltry offense. Myers hit a robust .354 in his final 23 AAA games—clouting 10 HRs and driving in 32. Over the last five games, Tampa has averaged just 2.4 runs. Of course, the Rays will not exactly be facing the iron of the Red Sox pitching staff—with Felix Doubront and Alfredo Aceves going in today's twi-night double-header. It will be interesting to see if Myers really is the next coming of Mike Trout and Bryce Harper.

Wil Myers Could Roil the Tampa Bay Rays’ Lefty Lineup

“Injecting one more bat against right-handed pitching that we felt had a chance to do some damage was something that we wanted to do.”

That’s Tampa Bay Rays Executive Vice President Andrew Friedman talking about calling up top prospect Wil Myers to join the big league club. Throughout his press appearance Sunday, Friedman emphasized the rookie’s success against right-handers, admiring how Myers had been “driving the ball against right-handed pitching,” and that his arrival would “give us our best chance against right-handed pitching.”
At first glance, it seems strange that the Rays would need this particular kind of help from the right-handed Myers, as the team is loaded with left-handed bats. Among regular starters, natural lefties James Loney and Matt Joyce are joined by three right-handers who swing from the left side – Jose Lobaton, Kelly Johnson, and Luke Scott. Throw in the switch-hitting Ben Zobrist, and right-handed pitchers frequently face a Rays lineup with no fewer th...

Tampa Bay Rays Add Wil Myers And Josh Lueke

The Tampa Bay Rays had a busy weekend as they purchased the contract of outfielder Wil Myers as well as recalled right-handed pitcher Josh Lueke from their Triple-A Durham farm club.
To make room for the duo, the Rays optioned infielder Ryan Roberts to the same minor league affiliate while placing Alex Cobb on the 7-day disabled list due to a concussion.
Cobb has no timetable to return to the rotation as every concussion is a totally different situation and there is no way of predicting how people will recover from it, or what types of symptoms will linger.
Myers should get close to full-time action as the club will form this young, potential future all-star, where as Lueke will work as a middle reliever.

What’s Wrong With Tampa Bay Rays’ Matt Moore?

The 2013 season started off hot for Tampa Bay Rays left handed pitcher Matt Moore, who received eight winning decisions in his first nine starts to begin his year 8-0 with with a sparkling 2.29 ERA through that span. Moore started off the year with 14 consecutive scoreless innings until Baltimore Orioles’ center fielder Adam Jones took him deep in Moore’s third start of the year. In Moore’s tenth start of the year, he pitched well against the New York Yankees over six innings, allowing a single run and lowering his ERA to 2.21 in a no decision, followed by a scoreless, one inning, rain-shortened start against the Cleveland Indians that lowered his ERA to a dazzling 2.18.
Matt Moore sat at 8-0 for his 10th and 11th starts, and then the wheels came loose. In his start following the rain-shortened outing, Moore lasted a career-low non-rain shortened two innings when he gave up six runs to the Detroit Tigers on June 4th. The Tigers would go on to win that game 10-1 and hand Moore his fi...

Alex Cobb released from hospital

There were a few tense moments moments after Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb was drilled in the head by a line drive in the fifth inning of Saturday's game at Tropicana Field. Cobb was taken off the field on a stretcher after he was hit on the right ear by a liner off the bat of Kansas City's Eric Hosmer. The visibly distressed Cobb put a hand on his head after being struck as trainers from both teams and other medical staff immediately ran onto the field. Cobb could be seen kicking his legs while being examined on the mound in front of the silenced crowd at The Trop. The Rays announced that Cobb remained conscious the whole time and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg for further examination. The Rays announced during their game against Kansas City Sunday that Cobb had been released from the medical center less than 24 hours after the frightening incident. The good news was just the opposite of the ear cringing sound of the ball hitting Cobb squarely in the

The Tampa Bay Rays’ top prospect Wil Myers will see his first big league action as the Rays open their away series against the Boston Red Sox with a double header on Tuesday. The Rays made the announcement following their 5-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, calling Myers out of his game with the AAA Durham Bulls after he doubled and scored a run against the Indianapolis Indians. Reserve 2B Ryan Roberts has been optioned to make room on the Rays’ 25-man roster.

Rays call up Wil Myers

Rays fans have been impatiently awaiting the arrival of Wil Myers. Since he hadn't been called up yet, it was safe to assume that Tampa Bay was playing service-time games with last year's USA Today minor league Player of the Year. At issue was the "super-two" date, which determines when players become eligible for arbitration. Being on the wrong side of that date would change the season when Myers became eligible for a big paycheck. Luckily for fans, that date has almost arrived.

And today, Myers got the call.

Rays adjust rehab schedule for David Price

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Tampa Bay Rays left-hander David Price will not begin minor league rehab assignments as early as first thought.
On Sunday morning, the Rays announced that Price, on the disabled list with a strained left triceps since May 16, would play catch Sunday, throw from a longer distance Monday and then throw another bullpen session likely Tuesday. The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner threw 54 pitches in his first simulated game last Thursday and 25 pitches in a bullpen session on Saturday. However, he experienced what the Rays have called "spring training soreness" since then.
Previously, it was thought Price could begin as many a three rehab assignments, possibly fewer, as early as Tuesday this week.
"It's not a setback or anything," said Price, who added that his arm was feeling better Sunday. "It's just something that happened. Obviously, I didn't want to be as sore as I was. But the way that I feel today, if you would have asked me if I wou

Alex Cobb Tweets Just Hours After Being Struck in Head by Line Drive, Already Eyeing Return to Mound

Alex Cobb suffered a scary injury on Saturday.
Cobb was struck in the head by a line drive that reports indicate traveled 102 mph. The Rays pitcher immediately hit the ground and grabbed his head in pain as his teammates and the team’s medical staff rushed to his aid.
Cobb was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher, but the young hurler avoided a disastrous fate. He only suffered a mild concussion, and he was even well enough to tweet just hours after the incident.
Cobb took to social media to thank everyone for their prayers and support. Like a true competitor, his focus is already on getting back to the mound.
Check out Cobb’s tweet below.
Can't thank everyone enough for the prayers. Was the only way for me to make it out of there ok. Look forward to getting back out there.— Alex Cobb (@Acobb53) June 16, 2013

Alex Cobb Leaves On Stretcher After Line Drive To Head

A line drive off the bat of Eric Hosmer struck Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb on the right side of his head Saturday night, sending him to the hospital after trainers from both the Rays and the Kansas City Royals rushed to attend the downed pitcher. He was held overnight for observation with what was described as a “mild” concussion.
Cobb had been leading the Rays in several pitching categories by the time he took the mound against the Royals on Saturday. Through his first 12 starts, he boasted a 6-2 record, a 2.95 ERA, and 73 strikeouts in 79.1 innings. Along with Matt Moore, Cobb had been anchoring the Rays’ rotation after the loss of James Shields in the offseason and the triceps injury that has sidelined David Price.

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb was hit in the head by a line drive and had to leave the game on a stretcher in the top of the fifth inning during Saturday's game at Tropicana Field.

Cobb was hit in the ear with the line drive off the bat of Kansas City Royals batter Eric Hosmer, and the game was delayed for 11 minutes while Cobb was tended to. Cobb reportedly has a concussion but is fortunate not to have been more seriously hurt. We wish Cobb a speedy recovery.

Rays pitcher Cobb hit by line drive

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb was taken off the field on a stretcher after it appeared he was hit near the right ear by a liner off the bat of Kansas City's Eric Hosmer in the fifth inning of Saturday's game.

Cobb put a hand on his head after being struck. Trainers from both teams and other medical staff immediately ran onto the field.

Cobb could be seen kicking his legs while being examined on the mound.

Players on both teams had hands on their hands as a stunned silence overtook Tropicana Field after the crowd gasped when Cobb was struck.

It came a month after Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ was also struck by a liner against the Rays and suffered a skull fracture.

Rays' Alex Cobb hit in head by line drive, leaves game

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. A line drive from Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer hit Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb in the head in the top of the fifth inning Saturday at Tropicana Field.

Cobb was struck on his right ear, causing the ball to bounce toward catcher Jose Lobaton after the impact.

In an announcement, the Rays said Cobb was taken to nearby Bayfront Medical Center for further examination. He was conscious the entire time.

There was a brief delay as medical personnel tended to Cobb on the mound. Cobb, face down, grabbed his head and kicked in pain shortly after the incident. Rays manager Joe Maddon, pitching coach Jim Hickey and numerous Rays players gathered and knelt near the site as Cobb was immobilized on a stretcher and carted off the field behind home plate.

The scene was eerily similar to an incident May 7 at Tropicana Field involving Toronto Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ, who suffered a skull fracture behind his left ear.

You dont want to bring it up, Rays right-hander Ale

Foot injury limits Rays' Evan Longoria to DH role

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Evan Longoria has suffered from plantar fasciitis in his right foot for about two weeks and could continue to be slotted as the Tampa Bay Rays' designated hitter in upcoming days as he recovers.
Longoria, who is hitting .305 (79 for 259) with 13 home runs and 39 RBI this season, was placed in the Rays' lineup as the designated hitter for the second consecutive day Friday before a game against the Kansas City Royals at Tropicana Field. He went 1 for 3 and struck out once as a DH in the Royals' victory Thursday.
Longoria, who has made other appearances in the DH role in rest situations this season, said he hopes to be recovered by the start of the Rays' three-game series with the Boston Red Sox next Tuesday at Fenway Park. He was seen taking ground balls at third base during the Rays' batting practice session Friday.
"I'm kind of getting to the point where I don't feel like I'm doing any good to go out there and run around on it," Longoria said. &q

Rays starter hacked while on mound

The fine folks at Deadspin pointed this out tonight. Alex Cobb got the start for the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night against the Boston Red Sox, and promptly allowed six runs on seven hits and a walk in the first inning. Of course, things would only get worse for Cobb off the field as his Twitter account was hacked while he was on the hill. Poor Alex. I guess when it rains, it pours.
