Darvish gives up one run in loss

Where, oh where has the Rangers offense gone? I feel like they used it all in the Detroit series. Or something. All I know is I want it back.
Yu Darvish pitched six frames, and the only Oakland run was a home run by Yeonis Cespedes. Honestly, Darvish wasn’t his sharpest tonight, but he was still good enough for a win. If only he’d had a little offense to help him out.
Unfortunately, that was nowhere to be found. The Rangers only managed three hits all night, and they all came from the bottom of the order — Craig Gentry, A.J. Pierzynski and Jurickson Profar. There weren’t even any walks. So those were literally the only three Rangers base runners all night. And they couldn’t get past second base. Sigh.
Now the boys are in jeopardy of being swept, unless they find their bats tomorrow.
KISS: Neal Cotts had a nice shutdown inning in his Rangers debut.
MISS: Mitch Moreland had three strikeouts for the night. So did Elvis Andrus.
FINAL SCORE
Oakland :: 1R, 7 H, 11 TLOB

Texas Rangers call up Neal Cotts

When Neal Cotts pitches for the Texas Rangers it will be his first big league pitches since the 2009. The talented but injury prone left hander is being called up in the wake of a roster shuffle that started when the Rangers designated Derek Lowe for assignment.
Cotts, 33, has been called up prior to Tuesday game against Oakland. This year Cotts has pitched 23 innings for Triple-A Round Rock where he has compiled a 0.78 ERA and a 42/5 K/BB ratio.
In parts of seven big league seasons Cotts compiled a 10-12 record and a 4.63 ERA while splitting time between the Chicago White Sox and Cubs. His best season came in 2005 when he had a 1.94 ERA in 69 games for the World Series winning White Sox.

Texas Rangers Recall Josh Lindblom, Other Notes

The Texas Rangers have recalled right-handed starter Josh Lindblom who will take Alexi Ogando‘s spot in the starting rotation. To make room for him, Texas has opted to designate right-handed pitcher Derek Lowe for assignment. He will have to clear waivers and accept an assignment for him to remain in the Rangers system.
In other moves, Texas has optioned catcher Robinson Chirinos to their Triple-A Round Rock farm club.

Prospecting Week 8: Jurickson Profar, Jake Odorizzi

Another weekly look at who’s hot and who’s not in minor league baseball to help your fantasy team. This week’s edition includes one of the tastiest prospects in baseball getting a call-up, another good young Rays pitcher in the bigs, and a pitcher who is a ‘dash-n-stash’. You want more? You want more? You really like it? You want more?HOTJurickson Profar MI | TEX (Baseball America: #1, Baseball Prospectus: #1) He’s here. One of baseball’s uber-elite prospects, Profar has been called up to replace the oft-injured Ian Kinsler who was placed on the DL. Profar will get regular at bats at 2nd base for as long as he’s up. The real question is how long will that be? If Profar hits, Ron Washington will have a real dilemma on his hands when Kinsler returns. Here at 643ball we talked about this situation in more detail a few weeks back. You can read about it here. And until its determined how long Profar will be up, he is a must-add in all leagues for his tasty upside. Ja

The Jurickson Profar Bandwagon Begins Tonight

Thanks to Ian Kinsler, baseball fans around the world get an early birthday present. Jurickson Profar, the #1 rated prospect according to just about any website on the tubes we call the interweb, is making his debut this evening for the Texas Rangers. Now, before you get too excited, first try to realize he’s still just a 20-year old from the Netherlands with only the potential to be a five-tool All-Star type of player, who will platoon the middle infield in the Major Leagues for potentially 15 years to come. Not too lofty, huh? Profar will no doubt look young and inexperienced at times, but he is the future of baseball. Okay, now get excited! Until the Rangers get rid of Kinsler or Elvis Andrus (or at the very least move Kinsler to another position), this will only be a short glimpse into the future while Kinsler hits the disabled list for 15 days. What happens when he comes back is up to the Rangers brass, but if it were up to me I know what I’d do.
Sidenote: If it were poss...

Jurickson Profar Opportunity Is Calling Your Name

When the season began many people expected that top prospect Jurickson Profar would make the Texas Rangers Opening Day roster. Texas instead opted to send their young superstar to Triple-A Round Rock and this would allow him to enhance his skills as a player.
There would be an opportunity for him to join the team if a player was injured during the season. That chance has come up with the injury to the Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler. Kinsler has an intercostal strain, this is the same injury that that forced David Wright out of the World Baseball Classic.
The Rangers believe that the injury is minor, but they don’t want it to get worse. So, with Kinsler going on DL, this is a great way for Profar to show everyone why he is rated as the top prospect in all of baseball.
This injury hurts like a two-edged sword for the Rangers. They will miss the production that Kinsler was providing for them season, but this also allows them to see what kind of player they have in Profar. Texas has...

The most decadent menu items at MLB ballparks

The Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and other Major League clubs have reset the gluttony bar with their latest menu pairings.
There is some sort of irony to be found in the concept of watching the fittest athletes in the world compete while chomping down on the least nutritional food possible.
Gone are the days where a simple burger and fries was the worst thing that one could consume at a Major League baseball game.
We have arrived at a time where the folks that run park concessions have gotten competitive in their creative zeal to come up with the most decadent combinations possible to tempt your palette.
These are the five that are must haves for those that road trip to multiple parks during the summer.

Rangers call up Jurickson Profar

On Sunday, the Texas Rangers were forced to place second baseman Ian Kinsler on the disabled list with a rib injury. While Kinsler was enjoying a productive season (.302, 24 runs, 20 RBI), his absence from the lineup may not be as crippling as one may think. To replace Kinsler at second base, the Rangers have called up Jurickson Profar from Triple-A Round Rock. Profar is widely considered to be the best prospect in baseball.

Despite the high praise frequently received by Profar, the Rangers did not have him playing a major role in their 2013 plans. The team already has two viable middle infielders in Kinsler and Elvis Andrus, and at only 20 years old, there is no reason to fast track Profar to the majors before he is ready. Although there is a ton of hype surrounding this kid, we very well may see him back in the minors once Kinsler is healthy.

Another option for the Rangers, however, would be to test Profar in the outfield. The Rangers' outfielders have struggled so far t...

Rangers' Lewis has work to do after rehab start

FRISCO, Texas At least Colby Lewis felt fine physically after making his rehab start for Frisco Monday.

As for how Lewis felt he pitched, well that wasn't so good.

"I definitely need more reps," said Lewis. "I definitely need to go out there and get my arm strength up. Eighty five or 86 isn't going to cut it, not for me anyways. I definitely need to go out there and get more reps. Hopefully in the next couple of starts I can generate some more arm strength and get my velocity back where it needs to be."

Lewis allowed two runs on four hits and pitched 2 13 innings for the Double-A Roughriders.

Throwing mainly fastballs that normally were around 85 mph, Lewis tallied 47 pitches (33 for strikes). He struck out three and didn't walk a batter. He was slated to throw three innings or around 45 pitches. He was visited by the trainer in the third inning but said that was just to check on Lewis's body.

Lewis, who is returning from right flexor tendon surgery, made his first re

Ian Kinsler to the DL, Jurickson Profar called up

The Texas Rangers will get another look at one of their top prospects. Unfortunately, the look at Jurickson Profar comes under less than ideal circumstances. The team has placed veteran Ian Kinsler on the disabled list, clearing room for Profar on the 25-man roster.

According to Todd Willis of ESPN Dallas, Kinsler was placed on the DL retroactive to Saturday. He is suffering from an intercostal strain - the same issue that forced David Wright out of the World Baseball Classic. Manager Ron Washington thinks Kinsler's injury is relatively minor, but they don't want it to get worse. The team consulted with Kinsler and doctors before ultimately deciding a trip to the disabled list is best.

Profar's call up comes at a time where he has been lighting things up at Triple-A. This could be the Profar fans have long-expected to see. Of course, minor league success doesn't always immediately translate to the Majors. Profar's already shown us that in the...

Change in order helps Murphy lift Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas Moving up in the batting order was intended to get a slumping David Murphy more involved in the action. You can't get more involved than Murphy's 3-run homer in the sixth Sunday night.

The blast to right field gave the Rangers the lead for good in a tumultuous, 11-8 Texas win.

Murphy moved up to the No. 2 spot in the order the day before in a shuffling caused by an injury to leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler.

"Hitting him down in the order when he's struggling there, he has to wait too long to get to the action," manager Ron Washington said. "I moved up there to get him a chance to get involved early and he came up big for us tonight."

With two outs in the sixth, Murphy connected on an inside fastball to give the Rangers an 8-7 lead.

"I just basically reacted," Murphy said. "It got in on me a little bit, but I got just enough of it."

The home run could be a sign Murphy is breaking out of the doldrums. He came into the game hitting just .205,

Darvish feels good heading into Tuesday start

ARLINGTON, Texas While some people may be concerned about how the 130-pitch outing by Yu Darvish in his last start will impact him Tuesday, Darvish isn't one of them.

The right-hander, who is scheduled to pitch against Oakland Tuesday, hasn't changed anything about his routine since he beat the Tigers Thursday.

"I didn't have much fatigue after the 130 pitches," Darvish said.

What he did gain was more confidence, especially after winning a matchup against Detroit ace Justin Verlander. While beating a Cy Young award winner was nice and Darvish (7-1) was lauded for his performance by Nolan Ryan, he still isn't ready to consider himself one of the game's best pitchers.

"I still think Verlander is the best pitcher in Major League Baseball," Darvish said. "I only have won 20 or so games here in the big leagues. I don't think I'm at a point where you guys can compare me to the top pitchers in Major League Baseball. I'm not even at the starting point.&quo

Rangers place Ian Kinsler on DL

The Texas Rangers have placed second basemen Ian Kinslder on the 15-fday disabled list. Kinsler’s time on the disabled list is retroactive to Saturday as he is dealing with a right intercostal strain.
Jurickson Profar has been called up from Triple-A to assume his roster spot.
On the season Kinsler is batting .302 with 7 home runs, 11 doubles, 20 RBI, and 24 runs scored in 40 games for Texas this season.
Kinsler will be able to come off the disabled list on June 2.
The Rangers call up of Profar will bring one of the most talked about minor leaguers to the major league leve for the first time in 2013. Profar was hitting .278 with 4 home runs and 19 RBI in 37 games at the Triple-A level.
Profar has hit safely in 8 straight for Round Rock and had his first multi-home run game of the season on Friday. Profar has seen time at second and shorstop this season.

Elvis Andrus responds to leadoff role with five hits

ARLINGTON, Texas Elvis Andrus said all the right things about not wanting to take Ian Kinsler's spot as the Rangers' leadoff hitter. But his bat spoke even louder.

Andrus was a career-best 5-for-5 while hitting first in Saturday's 7-2 win over the Tigers.

Andrus also scored three runs, drove in two, stole two bases and was a home run shy of the cycle.

It was his second game filling in as the leadoff hitter for Kinsler, who is out indefinitely with bruised ribs.

"No doubt about it, he had a good night," manager Ron Washington said. "He stayed up in the big part of the field the outfield expanse. When Elvis does that, he's a tremendous hitter. We certainly needed that. He was all over the bag, did a lot."

Andrus needed a home run to complete the cycle in his last at-bat in the eighth inning, but with just 14 homers in five seasons, the odds were against him.

"I heard mention he was trying to hit a home run the last time up," Washington said, stifling a chuckl

Kinsler sits with bruised ribs again

ARLINGTON, Texas Texas Rangers leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler was out of the lineup again Saturday because of bruised ribs.

Kinsler didn't start Saturday either but was used as a pinchrunner late in the game.

Texas manager Ron Washington said Kinsler would be available to run again Saturday or as a defensive replacement for Leury Garcia, who started at second for a second-consecutive game.

Washington wasn't sure about Kinsler starting Sunday either, saying that decision would be made later.

Kinsler originally bruised the ribs last weekend when he was hit by a throw while sliding at second on a stolen base attempt. He re-aggravated the injury Thursday night trying to get out of the way of a Justin Verlander pitch that hit Kinsler.

Rangers scratch Kinsler with bruised ribs

ARLINGTON, Texas Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington was looking for a way to get Ian Kinsler a day off.

Bruised ribs weren't in the plans though.

Kinsler was a late scratch Friday because of bruised ribs. Kinsler first hurt his ribs last weekend during a series in Houston when he was hit by a ball while trying to steal second base.

He aggravated the injury Thursday night when he tried to twist out of the way before he was hit by a Justin Verlander pitch. His awkward slide at third in the first inning had nothing to do with it.

"When I was at first after I get hit by a pitch was when I got the first reaction to it," said Kinsler, who now shares the franchise record for most times hit by pitch (54) with Rafael Palmeiro.

The Rangers moved Elvis Andrus to the leadoff spot and inserted Leury Garcia in the order at second base.

Kinsler hopes to be out just a day and Washington thinks that will be the case.

"He's sore," Washington said. "This might be a blessing in disguise

The Texas Rangers may eventually fade, their record is fools gold….

This club’s record is fool’s gold. Their brainless trust has made a series of stupid personnel moves which will culminate in many more games a like the one we just witnessed last night as the season progresses. There is no way on earth Texas’ offense can compensate for the 230(+) RBI’s that they surrendered by not keeping Josh Hamilton and CHRIS DAVIS, who, if you’ll recall, I told EVERYONE they should NOT give up on prior to trading him to Baltimore. Now, despite missing six games, Chris has 11 home-runs and 37 runs batted in for a manager (Buck Schowalter) who evidently felt that Davis really IS a prototypical everyday first baseman–unlike Chris’ former manager Ron Clueless Washington. And for those of you out there who said “GOOD RIDDANCE” to Josh Hamilton, please don’t come back with “Look how poorly he’s doing in an Angel uniform”. For one thing, based on history, that trend doesn’t figure to continue. And for another, the variables in the equation are different. With the pl
