Strasburg Hits a Career Milestone As He Throws 8 Innings

Stephen Strasburg hit a career milestone last night against the San Diego Padres. For the first time in his career, he pitched into the 8th inning. One of the best things about this start is that Strasburg was allowed to throw 117 pitches. This was just shy of his career high pitch count, in June of last season he threw 119 pitches in six-innings against the Reds. And over his 4-year career Strasburg has only made it to the 7th inning 10 times. For a Nationals fan and someone that truly wants to see Strasburg do well I love seeing that his limitations have been lifted. This outing will be, in my mind, a great step forward in his young career. Over the last few outings prior to this one, Strasburg has not shown the best mental state on the mound. But being allowed to pitch deep into the game shows that the Washington Nationals still have supreme confidence in their ace. So what’s next for Strasburg: complete game?
Nationals’ Jayson Werth suffers setback

The Washington Nationals were expecting to get outfielder
Jayson Werth back from the disabled list on Saturday, but this will likely be
pushed back a few days as the slugger has experienced a setback during his
rehab, according to Amanda Comak of The Washington Times.

Werth recently experienced tightness in his hamstring, the
injury which initially sent him to the DL. He traveled to New York yesterday to
have his hamstring examined, and as a result his return will likely be pushed
back.

Werth’s minor league rehab assignment began on Wednesday,
and it was supposed to continue Thursday with the Nationals’ Single-A affiliate.
However, manager Davey Johnson told reporters that Werth wanted to have his
hamstring examined after experiencing the tightness.

“He wanted to go see another doctor in New York,” Johnson
said before the Nationals’ game against the San Diego Padres on Thursday.
“Reason being, he felt a slight, little bit of tightness in his hamstring...

Wilson Ramos update: Nationals catcher back on the DL

As expected after Wilson Ramos exited Wednesday night's game, the Washington Nationals have placed the injury-prone catcher on the disabled list. Ramos was on the DL earlier in the season with a strain to the same area of his hamstring he strained Wednesday. The team expects this injury to take some time now that Ramos has re-injured it.

Bryan Kerr of MASN says the team recalled Jhonatan Solano in a corresponding move to fill out the roster once Ramos was officially placed on the 15-day DL. Solano had been with the team earlier in the year when Ramos was injured, but he was sent down when the team's starting catcher returned from injury. Now, Solano will once again have to fill in and provide Kurt Suzuki, the team's second catcher on the depth chart, rest whenever possible.

The impact of Ramos' injury is significant for two reasons. Ramos has a better bat than Suzuki, for one. But possibly more significant is the notion that the team's ace, Steph...

He also had a pregame chat with Bryce Harper, which ended with a bro-hug, of course. (Screencap via this MLB.com video)

Stephen Strasburg Earns First Win Since Opening Day

Stephen Strasburg can breathe a little easier now. With a 6-2 victory against the San Diego Padres on Thursday night, Strasburg garnered his second victory of the season, his first since opening day on April 1.
The Washington starter worked eight innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out four.
This was the first time in Strasburg’s major league career that he pitched in the eighth inning, doing so on 117 pitches, two shy of his career high of 119 that was set on June 8, 2012 in a 7-4 victory over Boston.
Strasburg’s performance is likely to quell critics of his proclivity to exit the game after an average of six innings and his personalized pitch count that has followed him since his call-up in 2010.
Strasburg looked stout in his ninth start of the season, maintaining good velocity on his fastball (clocked at 94 MPH) and showing a great deal of patience in the later innings of the game.
As Tyler Clippard began warming up in the bullpen in the eighth i...

Update: Bryce Harper's hair is on fire tonight

And so, despite pain in his abdomen after crashing into that pesky wall at Dodger Stadium, Bryce Harper is back in the Nationals lineup Thursday and back to "playing like his hair is on fire". In his first AB, he grounded into a fielder's choice and attempted to take second with his helmet flying off on a bad throw to first. He was gunned down, but not for lack of hustle. His hair is on fire:

Nationals’ Tough Guy Approach With Bryce Harper Ironic Considering Stephen Strasburg Debacle

The Nationals heard it all last season when it came to their handling of Stephen Strasburg, who was placed on an innings limit and subsequently shut down before the playoffs. The Nats babied the 24-year-old, they upset the ace and they ruined their season, which once looked so promising.
Now, eight months later, the Nationals are faced with a bit of a health situation involving their other superstar, Bryce Harper, who ran into a wall at Dodger Stadium during Monday’s game. The whole situation involving Harper hardly matches the magnitude of the Strasburg debate, which started early last season and lingered through October and into the offseason, but the dichotomy between the two predicaments is interesting.
Tests apparently indicated that Harper didn’t suffer a concussion — and he’s in Thursday’s lineup — yet it’s hard to dismiss the whole incident because of what we’ve heard since the collision. Harper looked dazed, had no idea where he was and has thrown out words like, “crappy,” ...

Good news: Bryce Harper is back in the Nationals lineup tonight against the Padres.
Up above, Video of Bryce Harper talking about the pain he was feeling after his pinch hitting appearance in the 9th inning of Wednesday night's painful 3-1 loss to the Dodgers, in which Harper stepped to the plate with a massive band-aid on his chin. In the Hollywood ending, Harper hit a 2-run home run to tie the game. In reality, he grounded out.
Meanwhile, Mike Rizzo was probably quite thrilled to see that Harper's hair was on fire during last night's postgame interview. Get well soon, kid.

No concussion for Bryce Harper, Mike Rizzo still wants him to play "100 miles an hour with his hair on fire"

And so, in spite of Bryce Harper saying he felt "carsick" on Tuesday after his crash into the right field wall at Dodger Stadium Monday night, the Nats are apparently confident that he doesn't have a concussion. Meanwhile, the debate rages about whether or not Harper plays the game too hard, hard enough, or just plain stupid.
Here's Nats GM Mike Rizzo weighing in, via Nationals Journal,:

Nationals Bryce Harper to undergo more concussion testing

Soon after Bryce Harper’s collision with the outfield wall,
the Washington Nationals said there were no concerns of a concussion. However,
Harper experienced nausea yesterday, keeping him out of the lineup. Because he’s
dealing with this sickness, he is likely to continue to be tested for a concussion,
according to Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post.

Harper received a concussion test Monday night and passed.
He still felt “kind of crappy” yesterday, but doesn’t feel he’s dealing with a
concussion.

“I feel kind of crappy today,” Harper said. “I feel a little
carsick, I guess you could say, like the feeling of that. I don’t have a
concussion or anything like that, which is very pleasant to hear.”

Considering nausea is one of the signs of a concussion, this
will likely cause the Nationals to continue to monitor Harper. Manager Davey
Johnson told reporters that the outfielder will “probably” undergo more tests
if the nausea continues. Teams now have to follow a sp

Video: Senator Harry Reid discusses Bryce Harper running into wall on Senate floor

It's fairly well documented that Senator Harry Reid -- who shares the home state of Nevada with Bryce Harper -- is a big Bryce Harper fan. Exhibit A: Reid invoked Harper's "That's a clown question, bro" line at a press conference last summer. So it should come as no surprise that Reid discussed the injury Harper suffered after running into that wall at Dodger Stadium Monday night on the Senate floor on Tuesday.
Video of Reid's comments above. Apparently Mitch McConnell agreed with Reid's sentiments.

Bryce Harper felt carsick today, but was most upset about shaving his beard

Up above: Bryce Harper sans beard on Tuesday night, a night after running into that pesky right field wall at Dodger Stadium and getting 11 stitches (which required him to shave his beard). So, how's he feeling?

"I feel kind of crappy today. I feel a little carsick, I
guess you could say, like the feeling of that. I don’t have a concussion
or anything like that, which is very pleasant to hear." (Bryce Harper, via Washington Post, 5/14/2013)

Apparently Harper was most upset about having to shave his beard:

Harper said he's sore and feels nauseous, but otherwise no worse for the wear. Said he was most upset about having to shave his beard.

And then there was this Tweet earlier in the day:

I will keep playing this game hard for the rest of my life even if it kills me! Ill never stop! #RespectTheGame

Bryce Harper Leaves Game After Collision With Wall, Receives 11 Stitches

Bryce Harper left in the fifth inning of Monday night’s game after a spine-tingling collision with Dodger Stadiums right field wall. AJ Ellis ripped a pitch from Jordan Zimmerman to right field over the head of Bryce Harper. In Harper fashion he took off to make the catch like a raging bull being let out of his cage. Harper was unable to make the catch and face planted into the wall. Bryce Harper imminently collapsed from the impact. After a few minutes Harper was able to get to his feet and walk off on his own power. Harper looked dazed and you could see blood running down his neck. What made the collision even more gruesome was the fact that Harper did not run into the padded part of the face, but the mesh fencing of the scoreboard. The cameraman zoomed in on where Harper hit and the scoreboard was jarred loose from the force of the impact. General Manager Mike Rizzo and principle owner Mark Lerner left their seats near the dugout right after the collision. You can only think that...

Video: Davey Johnson on Bryce Harper's crash into Dodger Stadium wall

"Bryce is going to be all right...He’s not worried about the wall or anything. He should
know it’s on the warning track and back off, but that’s not his nature. I
don’t want to change that...I feel sorry for the wall if he keeps
running into them." (Bryce Harper, via Washington Post, 5/14/2013)

Up above, video of Davey Johnson talking to reporters after Monday night's game, in which Bryce Harper crashed into the right field wall at Dodger Stadium and left the field bleeding. Harper needed 11 stitches for the cut under his chin and he bruised his neck and shoulder. Good news is: no concussion. Harper was lucky; it could've been much worse.

Bryce Harper injured after running into outfield wall

Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper had to leave Washington's game on Monday night in Los Angeles after running into the right field scoreboard at Dodger Stadium. Harper was chasing a fly ball hit by AJ Ellis in the fifth inning before simply running out of room and running straight into the scoreboard mounted on the right field wall. He didn't move after initially hitting the wall, and it's feared that he lost consciousness for a brief period. Harper would eventually leave the game, walking off the field under his own power with a decent bit of blood around his neck. Hopefully, Harper only has scrapes and bruises from the collision and he doesn't have a concussion. He's one of the brightest stars in the game, and more importantly for the Nationals right now, he's their best hitter and the main reason they're putting any runs on the board at all. If he's going to miss an extended period of time for Washington, their chances at repeating t...

Is It Time To Worry About Stephen Strasburg?

Error Unravels Strasburg I have been waiting to write this article, because even I am still confused with what happened. On Saturday against the Cubs Stephen Strasburg was rolling. Through four innings he had 7 strikeouts, in just 53 pitches and had allowed just one hit. Then the wheels came off, and the Nationals go on to lose 8-2. What the hell happened? In the 5th inning Strasburg got 2 quick outs, one being a gift when Luis Valbuena tried to turn a double into a triple. Then came the throwing error. A routine ground ball hit to Ryan Zimmerman turned into an error after the throw pulled Adam LaRoche off the bag. That was Zimmerman’s 6th error of the season. Okay, you never want to see an error when you are a pitcher, but it happens. What you need to do as a pitcher is nut-up and get the next guy out. This is not what Strasburg did. He went on to allow the next seven hitters to get on base. This is not how an ace pitcher like Strasburg should handle situations like this. The Nati...

Video: Kurt Suzuki ejected for first time in his career

Cubs 2, Nationals 1: While you're sitting around trying to come to grips with Davey Johnson pulling Gio for a pinch hitter after 86 pitches, enjoy the video above of Kurt Suzuki's first career ejection in the 9th for arguing with fill-in umpire John Tumpane over his crappy strike zone; this after his freak throw in the 9th led to the go-ahead run.

Gio perfect through five, gets pulled in the seventh; Storen and Raffy can't hold 1-0 lead, Nats offense takes Mother's Day off.
Seems like only yesterday the Nats were rolling with a five-game winning streak; now two losses in a row to the Cubs.
Silver lining: Braves lost again.
