Red Sox pitcher Koji Uehara whack Shane Victorino giving him a high-five

Sox pitcher, Koji Uehara, was expecting his Boston Red Sox teammates to show him some love after pitching a scoreless eigth innings, especially Shane Victorino, who seemed to be day-dreaming at the end of the bench. You’ll get smacked if you’re not prepared to give Uehara dap, Victorino.

Koji Uehara startles Shane Victorino with vicious high-five (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes.
In addition to establishing himself as one of the most effective setup men in baseball this season, Boston Red Sox reliever Koji Uehara has also earned a reputation as the league’s most aggressive high-fiver. When Uehara does his job in preserving a lead for Boston, his teammates need to be on their toes.
Apparently Shane Victorino has yet to figure that out. Uehara pitched a perfect eighth inning on Wednesday night against the Chicago White Sox to preserve 4-1 lead for the Red Sox and followed his performance by smashing the hands of his teammates in the dugout. Victorino was not prepared, which led to a smack across the chest from Uehara. Here’s the hilarious moment in GIF form, courtesy of NESN:

The Flyin’ Hawaiian won’t be making that mistake again. There’s no sitting down when Uehara comes off the field — period.

Your Morning Dump...where Ortiz's heel looked A-OK when stealing third.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
At age 37, in his 17th major league season, David Ortiz accomplished a career first last night: He stole third base.
“You saw that (expletive)?” Ortiz joked.
It happened in the first inning. Ortiz already had given the Red Sox a 2-0 lead with a one-out single against White Sox starter Hector Santiago, and Mike Napoli drew a walk to bring up Daniel Nava. From the dugout, the Red Sox sent a sign for Ortiz to take off for third.
“I was like, ‘Are you sure?’ ” said Ortiz, who had stolen only two bases since 2007, when he notched a career-high three steals. “Momentum in the game, it happens, and I don’t have a zero in that category anymore.”
Ortiz was stranded at third after Nava and Will Middlebrooks struck out. But the fact that the Red Sox had the confidence to turn him loose suggests that Ortiz’ balky heel

Koji Uehara’s High Five Strikes Down On Shane Victorino With ‘Great Vengeance and Furious Anger’

Koji Uehara pitched a flawless eighth inning on Wednesday night and as he came back into the Red Sox dugout he brought the heat again, but this time with his high fives. The Red Sox players must have seen this type of enthusiasm before because all were prepared except one. Check out how Koji basically slaps an unsuspecting Shane Victorino at the end of his high five tour. Amazing!

Jacoby Ellsbury’s Solid Effort Against White Sox Doesn’t Silence Leadoff Debate, But It Turns Volume Down a Bit

One game doesn’t make a season, and in most cases, one game doesn’t turn a season around. When you’re facing the pressure that Jacoby Ellsbury is facing, though, you take what you can get.
Ellsbury went 2-for-3 with two singles, two walks and a run scored in the Red Sox’ 6-2 win over the White Sox on Wednesday. It was Ellsbury’s first multi-hit game since May 4, and the very encouraging performance couldn’t come at a better time for the 29-year-old, who is clinging to his job as Boston’s leadoff hitter.
John Farrell said before Wednesday’s game that Ellsbury will remain the Red Sox’ leadoff hitter for the time being, but he also didn’t rule out eventually making a lineup change if the outfielder continues to struggle. Ellsbury entered Wednesday’s game hitting .185 with a .267 on-base percentage in 19 May games, lowering his season average and on-base percentage to .242 and .307, respectively. Those aren’t numbers you want to see if you’re a manager, especially when they’re attached

Koji Uehara Whacks Shane Victorino When Outfielder Isn’t Paying Attention During Dugout High Fives (Animation)

Koji Uehara has quickly won over Red Sox fans this year by his excitable style on the mound in addition to his effectiveness there.
On Wednesday, he endeared himself to Red Sox Nation even further with a 1-2-3 inning in Chicago, followed by his routine of dishing out a high five to everyone in the dugout. However, Shane Victorino wasn’t paying close enough attention for Uehara’s liking — so the outfielder paid the price.
Check it out in the animation below.

Red Sox rumors: Jacoby Ellsbury hasn't discussed extension

The 2013 campaign is huge for Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury. Unfortunately for the former MVP candidate, it hasn't gone so well so far. There has been talk of whether or not the Red Sox should ink the center fielder to a long-term deal, but as of yet sides haven't discussed a contract extension, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.

After coming off a tough 2012 season, Ellsbury signed a one-year, $9 million tender for 2013. It represents his last season of arbitration eligibility, as he's set to hit the free agent market this winter.

The Red Sox have indicated that they'd be interested in retaining Ellsbury, but it's been difficult to gauge his value considering his uneven production and proneness to injury. When he was good, he was great, hitting .321/.376/.552 with 46 doubles and 32 home runs in 2011. However, he's been not so good over the past two seasons -- hitting only .260/.310/.356 -- while also struggling with injuries.

Ellsbury’s Struggles and the Red Sox

Just a couple of years ago, Jacoby Ellsbury came out of nowhere of have one of the best seasons by a position player in years. He hit .321/.376/.552 (149 wRC+) with 32 home runs while playing center field that impressed both the Gold Glove voters and various fielding metrics. Although Ellsbury had been a first-round draft pick by the Red Sox in 2005 and had been a very good prospect in his minor-league days, it is unlikely many saw 2011 coming. While Ellsbury was amazingly fast — he stole 70 bases in 2009, one of only three players to steal 70 or more in a single season since 2000 — and had good contact skills, he had not shown anything close to that sort of power. In fact, he had never hit double digits in home runs in any major or minor league season prior to 2011.
It would have been unfair to expect Ellsbury to repeat his 2011 performance, but even so, he has been disappointing since then. His 2012 was derailed by an early shoulder injury and he ended up playing only 74 games whi...

Bro hugs with Koji: Rebirth of the Boston Red Sox bullpen

On May 19th, on the road against the Twins, Sox set-up man Koji Uehara was in the middle of a hellish 8th: a leadoff double to pinch-hitter Wilkin Ramirez, a walk to light-light-hitting shortstop Pedro Florimon, and a single to Jamey Carroll. With two-down and the bases loaded, the Sox up 3-1, Koji faced Joe Mauer, one of the few bright spots on a struggling Twins lineup. Koji reared back: Ball, Foul, Foul, Ball. Then one of the pitches Sox fans have come to love: an 88mph 2-seamer up and away, catching Mauer swinging. Inning over. What came next is what has made Koji Uehara possibly the most beloved reliever in my memory as a Sox fan. He pounded his fist joyfully into his glove, ran towards catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, patted his chest as if to say “My bad” with a smile on his face. And then he stopped Salty halfway to the dugout and hugged him. Not a pat on the back. Not a bump on the fist. A hug. Square shoulders, face to face, hug, with a thankful whisper in the ear to boot....

Jacoby Ellsbury Too Talented Not to Pull Out of Slump, Become Game-Changer Red Sox Know He Can Be

Baseball is a funny game.
While other sports have demanding schedules that can span over a long period of months, there’s not much that can measure up to the day-in, day-out grind of baseball. It can be difficult to stay focused 162 games each and every time, but it’s something that best in the game can learn to adapt to.
That’s not just about ballplayers, though. Everyone around the game has to find ways to stay fresh and keep loose during what can often feel like a long season. When working on the field with the Red Sox or in the booth with the likes of Jerry Remy, however, the time tends to go by a little bit quicker.
What’s the best thing about always being with the team?
–Tyler Maheu
I would say relationships with the players and coaches. Once they realize you are there day in and day out, you seem to gain a familiarity with them and it seems to increase year by year. Getting to know each person’s personality as well as knowing him well helps formulate your in-game perceptions...

Jacoby Ellsbury’s Struggle in Leadoff Spot Result of Change in Swing Motion (Video)

Base hits have been elusive to Red Sox leadoff man Jacoby Ellsbury in the last few games. After his first day off all season on Sunday in Minnesota, Ellsbury was back in the Sox’ lineup on Monday in his usual leadoff spot.
The center fielder grounded out to second base in all four of his appearances at the plate Monday, rounding out a road trip that has seen his batting average drop from .257 to .241. On the Sox’ current road trip, Ellsbury’s average is a paltry .125.

Red Sox' Shane Victorino out with hamstring injury

Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino exited last night's contest against the Chicago White Sox in the sixth inning after sustaining a hamstring injury. Victorino is out of the team's Tuesday lineup, and it's not clear if the ailment will require a trip to the disabled list.

Following last night's game, Victorino expressed frustration to reporters -- including Scott Lauber of The Boston Herald. He feels that it's been one injury after another, as he missed time earlier this season to a sore back.

“It seems like if it ain’t one thing, it’s another right
now,” Victorino said. “They say it’s all connected. That’s what’s frustrating for
me. What is it? I just want to get back to being healthy and being out there
and being a healthy player and feeling good.”

After missing a week in April due to the back tightness, Victorino aggravated the injury last week, resulting in another two games on the bench. Last night, while he was attempting to leg out an i...

Bleacher Tweets: Will Aceves head west, is Jackie Bradley Jr. coming back and silence of the brass

Scott Levesque
Managing Editor

We're gearing up for another week of Bleacher Tweets and this time you posed a lot of question regarding the Red Sox organization, future stars and a random chicken or beer question - why can't we have both, seriously. Nevertheless, it's always an entertaining and fun way to kick off the week so let's jump right into your questions. Shall we?

If you have a question/s you want to ask Scott then send a tweet to @scottlevesque ending with #BleacherTweets. Who knows, you might see it next week on RedSoxLife.
Seriously, you know you want to...

@LisaLaFreniere1 - @scottlevesque Do you think BoSox mgmt keeps a "low-pro" after 2012 drama-filled year & their low approval rating?  #BleacherTweets

Since their time at Fort Myers, FL (spring training) we haven't heard much from the Red Sox brass regarding anything of noteworthy news. Honestly, that's probably one of the smartest moves they've m...

Red Sox activate Andrew Bailey from DL, Stephen Drew back in lineup

The Boston Red Sox activated Andrew Bailey from the 15-day disabled list on Monday.
Bailey missed three weeks with a right biceps injury but should move right back into the closers role in Boston. Prior to the injury Bailey had a 1.46 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 20/4 K/BB ratio in 12 1/3 innings.
With Joel Hanrahan out of the picture, Bailey should have a comfortable grip on the closing duties in Boston.
The Red Sox will also welcome back shortstop Stephen Drew to the lineup on Monday. Drew had missed two games over the weekend while dealing with a back issue. Curretnly the 30-year-old is hitting .238/.336/.410 with three home runs, 18 RBI and a .746 OPS through 31 games this season.

Pedro reveals Sox's secret sauce

There was much ado about the Boston Red Sox players' eating and drinking habits in the wake of the team's September meltdown two seasons ago.

But according to one former Sox star, 2011 was hardly the first time a little alcohol made its way into the Boston clubhouse -- and in prior years it yielded positive, even curse-breaking, results.

Speaking to Sports on Earth at a legends game in Rochester, N.Y., on Saturday, former Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez recalled the team's 2004 World Series run, which ended an 86-year title drought for the Sox and their fans.

Martinez told the site that before games, the players took a small shot of 'Mama Juana,' a concoction of roots and Latin rum. The tradition started, Martinez said, before Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, which the Sox trailed 3-0 against the rival New York Yankees. The first to take the dive was Ellis Burks, who was not on the postseason roster.

"Ellis decided to taste it to see what it tastes like, then (Kevin) Millar wants to taste it a

Pedro: Sox drank before ALCS games

In 2004, the Boston Red Sox pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks in the history of postseason baseball when they rallied from a 3-0 series hole to eliminate arch-rival New York in the ALCS. They eventually went on to capture the franchise's first World Series title in 86 years to cap off an improbable and magical playoff run. Thanks to Pedro Martinez, one of the pitchers from that team, we may now know how they were able to do it. Apparently, the secret weapon consisted of sipping on a Dominican rum concotion before games.“We took a shot of Mama Juana every single game, before the game,” Martinez said in an interview conducted Saturday at the Pepsi MAX Field of Dreams Game in Rochester, N.Y. “We call it Mama Juana — it’s made of roots, with latin rum.”According to Martinez, the custom started before Game 4 of the ALCS when Ellis Burks, a member of the 2004 team who was not on the postseason roster at the time, decided to try a swig of the alcoholic beverage. Later that...

Ortiz selling bats with infamous quote

Back on April 20, while addressing the crowd at Fenway Park's first home game after the Boston Marathon Bombing, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz delivered a memorable quote — emphasized with the now-famous words, "this is our f------ city!" And to help raise money for the One Fund Boston charity, Big Papi is using those same words to raise money for the victims of the attack by putting them on a baseball bat. Ortiz's quick pregame speech in the midst of a Boston tribute that came in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing made headlines when he used the F-word. And now, anyone can buy a bat with that phrase emblazoned on the inside of the barrel available at big papi.com. If you prefer "Nobody's going to dictate our freedom" to the "this is our f------ city" quote, you have an option to pick the former. But it sounds like the cool thing will be choosing the R-rated version. The Red Sox designated hitter announced that in conjunction with Maru
