Larry Foote Upset About Pittsburgh Steelers 2012 Season and James Harrison’s Choice to Join the Cincinnati Bengals

Pittsburgh Steelers inside linebacker Larry Foote is making his feelings well known. First, he’s not too happy about the Steelers disappointing 8-8 season in 2012. It’s unlikely that anyone would/could be happy about a season that ended as poorly as the Steelers season did last year, but as one of the leaders on the defense Foote will have to lead the team to a turnaround in 2013. “We’re pissed off we didn’t make the playoffs. On top of that, our rival won the Super Bowl. I know guys are taking it personally. It’s just a whole different mindset to the off-season. I know guys are ready to get back where we need to be,” Foote said in an interview with “Go Blue Wolverine” the magazine. The 2012 season was the worst year the Steelers have had under head coach Mike Tomlin. During his tenure with the team Tomlin has taken the Steelers to two Super Bowls and won one. They have won three division titles with Tomlin as the coach, but consistency has been a problem for the Steelers since 2007...

Looking Back At The Great Season Had By Steelers TE Heath Miller In 2012

2012 was a phenomenal year for Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller, who registered 71 catches for 816 yards and 8 touchdowns, but when you go even deeper into his stats, you will find that the aforementioned stat line still doesn't do his Pro Bowl season justice, nor does it equate to him being ranked the 97th overall player on the Top 100 Players of 2013 list.

For starters, Miller caught 70.3% of the passes thrown to him in 2012 and that ranked him 6th overall among the tight ends that caught 30 or more passes last season.

Miller's team leading 368 yards gained after the catch in Read more [...]

Steelers LB Larry Foote Says There’s A Whole Different Mindset To The Off-season

Like most NFL players, Pittsburgh Steelers inside linebacker Larry Foote is very passionate about his alma mater and he recently gave an interview to Go Blue Wolverine to give his thoughts on Michigan and their upcoming season.

Foote, who made sure to voice his hate for Ohio State during the interview, was also asked to give his thoughts on the Steelers missing the playoffs in 2012 and what the team is doing this off-season to get back there in 2013.

Pittsburgh Steelers Rankings in NFL’s Top 100 Players Perfectly Show Flaws in the System

The NFL Network has been counting down the top 100 players heading into the 2013 season. The top 100 players last year showed that there were many flaws in the system and the players even asked who had voted for these rankings. According to the network the players themselves were the one’s voting. These issues, coupled with some of the players that made the list, showed that there were many flaws in the system. When the network announced that they would be doing a top 100 for 2013 I figured it would be more of the same and chose not to pay much attention to the list. However, taking a quick look at the players listed 61-100 (the rest of the lists have not yet been released) you can see that the list is once again flawed. In fact, as Steelers fans we need only look at the Steelers players that have so far been rated to see that this list has many issues. So far the only Steelers players on the list are Heath Miller at number 97, Troy Polamalu at number 91 and Ben Roethlisberger at nu...

Don’t Bet On Steelers DE Cameron Heyward Opening The Season As A Starter

With Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Cameron Heyward now entering his third season in the league, many believe that he will open the 2013 season as a starter, but I wouldn't be so quick to bet on that happening.

Even though Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette posted this week in his online chat that he's been told Heyward is already better than starting left defensive end Ziggy Hood, and that he will be given an opportunity to unseat Hood in training camp, the fact remains that Heyward is probably best suited to play on the right side which is currently being manned by veteran Brett Read more [...]

Motivation for Ben Just Keeps Mounting

He’s hurt all the time. He hasn’t had a fourth quarter comeback in forever. It was his fault Mike Wallace left because he couldn’t throw it deep enough for him. He makes the wrong audibles. He was too ‘chummy’ with Bruce Arians and he is clearly the reason the team lost Super Bowl XLV and went 8-8 last year.
Ben Roethlisberger is a lot of things, but he isn’t Atlas. He is a human being after all and after being hailed as the savior of the beloved Pittsburgh Steelers’ franchise in 2004, he’s delivered on the field more often than not but yet his issues off the field still resonate with people which I find sad.
Some of what I mentioned in the opening is true. Roethlisberger cost his team at the end of games in Dallas and at home against Cincinnati with late game interceptions. While there were moments in each of those games where other Steelers certainly had a hand in the failings of the team, Roethlisberger is the QB and as such either gets the credit or gets the blame and he clearly...

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger Ranks 61st Overall On NFL Network Top 100 Players List

The annual Top 100 Players of 2013 show that airs on the NFL Network revealed their Nos. 61-70 ranked players on Thursday night and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger surprisingly wound up in the No. 61 spot this year.

Last year, the 31 year-old Roethlisberger was ranked No. 30 overall in the rankings and fourth at his position behind only Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Tom Brady. This year, however, 11 other quarterbacks will rank higher than Roethlisberger, who missed four games last season due to injuries suffered in the Week 10 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cameron Heyward May Start at Defensive End for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2013

When the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Cameron Heyward in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft they had every intention of turning him into an eventual replacement for Brett Keisel and starter. In 2013, Heyward may see his name enter the starting line-up depending on how he performs during training camp and the pre-season. However, it is unlikely that Heyward will be starting in place of Keisel as was previously expected. Instead, Heyward, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, will have a chance to replace Ziggy Hood in the starting line-up this year. Bouchette said in his weekly chat on Tuesday that he has been told Heyward is better than Hood and will get the chance to unseat him in 2013. Last year Heyward only played on twenty-seven percent of the Steelers defensive snaps. Keisel played on eighty-seven percent of snaps and Hood played on eighty-two percent of the defensive plays. Based on snap counts Heyward would project to have more sacks and tackles than Hoo...

Top 5 Multiple-Pick Rounds in Pittsburgh Steelers Drafts Since 2000 (Part 1 of 2)

If the 2013 Pittsburgh Steelers draft was made into a movie, the dramatic climax would come in the fourth round.
The Steelers traded next year’s third-round pick for the Browns’ fourth-round pick, No. 111, to draft flashy safety Shamarko Thomas. Then, four picks later, the Steelers dropped some jaws by drafting Landry Jones.
Jones is the first quarterback the Steelers have drafted in five years. The last time the Steelers went five years without drafting a quarterback was1949.
The Steelers drafted Oklahoma wide receiver Justin Brown in the sixth round, then used their compensatory sixth-round pick to take Florida State inside linebacker Vince Williams.
The fourth and sixth rounds of the Steelers’ 2013 draft were their 20th and 21st multiple-pick rounds since Kevin Colbert became director of football operations in 2000.
Like every team, the Steelers have stacked multiple picks in one round from time to time either by trading picks or through compensatory picks.
Some of those rounds h...

Mike Wallace Thinks Ryan Tannehill Can Throw Farther Than Ben Roethlisberger

New Miami Dolphins wide receiver, and former Pittsburgh Steeler, Mike Wallace believes that his new quarterback will be “great.” Wallace will have to hope that Tannehill becomes a great quarterback because he just left a great quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger to play with him. Although, let’s be honest, Wallace’s move to Miami had more to do with money than the quarterback. “Both have strong arms. Ryan has a cannon, can really fling it,” Wallace said via NBC Sports. “Ryan may be able to throw the ball a little farther than Ben. Obviously, Ben is more experienced in game time experience. The way it’s going, it won’t take long for Ryan to be one of the great quarterbacks. I feel like we can make a lot of big plays.” Roethlisberger is not known for his deep ball, like say Joe Flacco is in Baltimore, even though he does have a very good arm. Instead Roethlisberger is known for his play-making abilities and his accuracy; his career completion percentage is 63.1% and his worst season was...

J.D. Woods Must Prove He’s Not Just That Other West Virginia Wide Receiver To Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers undrafted wide receiver J.D. Woods caught 61 passes for 637 yards and four touchdowns in 2012, but being as he played his college football at West Virginia, that was only good enough to rank him third on the team in receptions behind Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey, both of whom caught 114 passes last season. In other words, Woods was just "that other West Virginia wide receiver" heading into the 2013 NFL draft.

Despite only having 61 receptions, Woods still had 15 more than Tennessee wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, who was drafted 29th overall in the first round last Read more [...]

Steelers likely won’t re-sign Casey Hampton

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette doesn’t believe the Steelers would be interested in resigning free agent nose tackle Casey Hampton even if he’s not ready to retire yet.
Hampton will be turning 36 years-old in early September, it doesn’t make sense for the Steelers to bring him back. It’s time to reload and move on. They’ll be just fine without him.

Can The Steelers Be More Run Balanced Directionally In 2013 With More Zone Blocking?

The Pittsburgh Steelers have predominantly been a heavy right handed running team over the course of the last several season, but in 2012 they were extremely right handed and really just a team that ran between the two guards.

If you look at the table below, which runs from the left side to the right side, you will see that only 4% of all combined rushes went off left end and that only 7% of all rushes went to left tackle.

To better illustrate the numbers, 71% of all of the Steelers runs last year went between the two guards and that was easily the highest percentage off all teams in 2012. Read more [...]

Reggie Dunn Unlikely to Make Steelers Final 53- Man Roster, Unless…

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed fifteen undrafted rookie free agents following the 2013 NFL Draft, but one of them is a but more intriguing than the rest. His name is Reggie Dunn and if you are an avid Steelers’ fan you have probably already heard all about him. He played wide receiver at Utah and during his college career he played three seasons for the Utes and totaled 31 receptions for 355 yards and one touchdown. Those receiving stats don’t exactly jump off the page. Even if they were for only one season they wouldn’t exactly be strong statistically. However, it’s not the receiving abilities that make Dunn intriguing, instead it’s his abilities in the return game. During his sophomore season Dunn returned 12 kicks at a 29.6 yards per kick average and one he returned for a touchdown. The next year he returned 26 kickoffs at a rate of 23.6 yards per return, but it was his senior season that made him a big time return prospect and one of the best return men in college football.
Lack Of Competition Could Lead To Steelers DE Al Woods Making 53 Man Roster Again In 2013

The Pittsburgh Steelers addressed their depth concerns at the defensive end position in the 2013 NFL draft with their selection of Samford defensive tackle Nick Williams in the seventh round. In addition to that, they also signed undrafted free agent defensive ends Brian Arnfelt and Cordian Hagans following the draft.

During the post selection press conference of Williams, Steelers defensive line coach John Mitchell let it be known that the defensive tackle will be converted to defensive end and thus will be considered a project initially. With that bit of information being given, the Steelers Read more [...]

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert Anxious To See If Reggie Dunn Can Handle Punts

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert held a conference call for season ticket holders on Tuesday and during the session he was asked to give his thoughts on Reggie Dunn, the undrafted free agent kick returner extraordinaire out of Utah.

"He is an exciting player. He ran in the 4.3s on his pro day," said Colbert. "Reggie didn’t have a lot of production as a receiver or a runner, but on kick returns – I believe without checking – he had 10 kickoff returns and four of those were for touchdowns.

"He isn’t the biggest guy. He is extremely fast. We know what he can do as a Read more [...]

Steelers seeking stability on defensive front

Anchored on the front line by NT Casey Hampton and bookend DEs Kimo Von Oelhoffen and Aaron Smith the dominant 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers defense allowed a stingy 3.4 yards per carry. Von Oelhoffen left for Gang Green pastures following the Superbowl season and was replaced by incumbent DE Brett Keisel. The Steelers played .500 football in 2006 but that was due to careless turnovers on offense and special teams; the defense however brought the pain-hammer to the ground game’s jaw by only allowing 3.5 yards per carry. In 2007 a mediocre run defense gave up 4.0 yards per carry, which is a considerable jump from previous years, keeping in mind injuries to Aaron Smith kept him out of games early in the season and after a torn bicep suffered during the 34 – 13 loss in Foxboro he missed the final four games of 2007. Smith recovered, started all games in 2008, and helped etch his defense in the golden books as one of the best in NFL history allowing a mere 3.3 yards per carry. Smith’s decl...

5 Pittsburgh Steelers Who Will be Under the Knife During Training Camp

Every year during training camp multiple players find themselves in a position where they must perform well or find themselves looking for a new job. This year the Pittsburgh Steelers have multiple players that may be on their last legs with the team and if they don’t perform well during training camp and OTA’s they may be looking for a new team and another opportunity come September. Below is a list of five players that will have to play very well during training camp to see playing time in 2013 and if they don’t perform well may find themselves on the chopping block later this off-season: 1.) Jonathan Dwyer: Dwyer served as the Steelers starting running back at times during the 2012 season, but things aren’t looking good for him at this point. The Steelers drafted Le’Veon Bell in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft and he is expected to start at running back. Former-Pitt and Arizona Cardinals running back Larod Stephens-Howling also signed with the team and is expected to serve...
