White Sox scratch Chris Sale from today's start

Instead of seeing Chris Sale pitch for the Chicago White Sox, southsiders will see Hector Santiago. The up and coming young pitcher was scratched from his scheduled start because of left shoulder tendinitis. The team and Sale are simply exercising caution in not having him pitch today. The decision was made last night.

Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago says Sale was struggling to throw his side session and play long toss. His shoulder was simply bothering him too much, so he spoke up and told the coaching staff. Sale did not want to risk significant injury by taking the mound today in the series finale against the Boston Red Sox.

“I had to change my in-week regimen around it,” Sale said. “At the end of the day, just something that was said would be better to do for now. Rather miss this one than one down the road, or possibly do something we don’t want to do.”

As of now, the team does not seem concerned about the injury, but lately it seems these minor injuries turn out to b...

David Ortiz, Red Sox Offense Struggle Against Strong White Sox Pitching (Video)

The Red Sox had no answer for Jose Quintana on Tuesday, as the White Sox hurler took a no-hitter into the seventh inning en route to Chicago’s second straight victory.
Boston did manage to break through with four hits and six total baserunners over the final three innings, but they managed just one run against Chicago’s relievers. The (Red) Sox’ best chance to draw even came in the seventh, when they loaded the bases with one only to fall victim to two consecutive strikeouts.
David Ortiz, who singled in the seventh but grounded into an inning-ending double play in the eighth, addressed his team’s offensive struggles after the game. Check out what he had to say in the video above.

credit: getty images
The Chicago White Sox will skip Chris Sale’s scheduled start on Wednesday. Sale was to face the Boston Red Sox but will be skipped due to mild tendinitis.
Hector Santiago will make the start on Wednesday for the White Sox. Santiago will be pitching on three days rest after lasting only 3 1/3 innings in his start on Saturday.
Sale is expected to be ready for his start next Tuesday. On the season Sale has a 2.53 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP in nine starts.

Your Morning Dump...where Lester doesn't care for Chicago

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here...
highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as
satisfying as a good morning dump.
When Jon Lester took the mound last night, he was trying to become
the first Red Sox lefty starter since 1973 to go at least 7-0 to begin a
season.

But he also was facing his personal kryptonite.
In
his best and worst seasons, Lester struggles against the White Sox. He
can’t explain it, but it has become as predictable as winter blizzards
in Chicago. In nine previous starts against the White Sox entering the
series opener here, the Red Sox ace lefty had a 5.20 ERA, by far his
highest against any AL team.
And, true to form, Lester got roughed up again in a 6-4 loss that snapped the Red Sox’ five-game winning streak.
“For
whatever reason, I’ve never pitched well here,” Lester said after
allowing five runs, all with two outs, over the first two innings. “Talk
to them. See what they’ve got on me. Ma

The most decadent menu items at MLB ballparks

The Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and other Major League clubs have reset the gluttony bar with their latest menu pairings.
There is some sort of irony to be found in the concept of watching the fittest athletes in the world compete while chomping down on the least nutritional food possible.
Gone are the days where a simple burger and fries was the worst thing that one could consume at a Major League baseball game.
We have arrived at a time where the folks that run park concessions have gotten competitive in their creative zeal to come up with the most decadent combinations possible to tempt your palette.
These are the five that are must haves for those that road trip to multiple parks during the summer.
Please click here to read this story.

Armed Forces Tribute Day at Angels Stadium

ANAHEIM, Calif. Saturday was a double-header day of sorts at Angels Stadium.

In the opener, the Angels reversed a 4-0 deficit to beat the Chicago White Sox, 12-9. But the real comeback came in the late afternoon, a continuation of Armed Forces Tribute Day at the Big A.

It was the debut of the Purple Heart Baseball game, a three-inning affair won by the team representing Fort Sam Houston, which defeated Camp Pendleton 20-10.

It was part of the festivities that took place on Armed Forces day in Anaheim, but it was much more than a ceremonial game among combat veterans.

Theres the compelling tale of Daniel Doc Jacobs, a double-amputee who has undergone more than 50 surgeries since being injured in the Iraq War while fighting with the Navy.

He lost his left leg below the knee, along with toes on his right foot and parts of fingers, yet on February 28, he was given a tryout with the Dodgers prior to a game at their Camelback Ranch spring training site.

A real tryout for a real 27-year-old who will not let t

Danks Nearing Return While IF's Progress Quickly

Outside of the lackluster defense and incompetent offense, the main trend of April for the White Sox was injuries. While fans have had to wait patently for some of the team's more prominent names to return, it looks like the waiting process is finally dwindling down.

With Danks Getting Closer, Ventura Dismisses a 6-Man Rotation

There’s some news out of Charlotte, as John Danks has made another rehab start.

For Danks Saturday night in Buffalo, the veteran got through 4.2 innings and letting up two earned runs. Though he did strike out five hitters, the four walks and 2 hit batsmen he issued is worrisome. He threw only 51 of his 95 pitches for strikes, as his control continues to be the biggest worry (if not velocity) surrounding him.

He could be in line to make his return to the White Sox on Friday night at U.S. Cellular Field against the Miami Marlins (this according to the twitter accounts of both Scott Merkin and Mark Gonzales), but you have to assume ...

Deunte Heath Demoted; Donnie Veal Recalled

The White Sox made a subtle, yet important roster move after last night’s game.

The team optioned right-handed bullpen arm Deunte Heath back to AAA Charlotte and promoted lefty Donnie Veal to take his place.

Heath really struggled in his four appearances out of the bullpen since being called up mid-April, giving up seven runs over 5.2 innings.

If this is indeed the last time we see Deunte Heath this season, which is possible given he hasn’t really impressed in his couple of stints with the team, my lasting memory will be the mammoth home run Heath gave up to the first batter he saw this year: an absolute bomb to dead center by Yan Gomes in Cleveland last month.

Needless to say, Heath is a guy who really didn’t show much while he was up here.

Veal was a pretty key guy down the stretch last season for the Soutsiders, as the lefty specialist held left-handed hitters to just an .094 average in his 24 appearances last season.

However, he struggled with his ...

Chris Sale is quietly terrific

The Chicago White Sox' Chris Sale might be the quietest superstar in baseball. Whether it is because his team gets little national exposure or because he is not doing Head & Shoulders commercials, I do not know, but he just goes out there every fifth day and is devastating. And he keeps getting better. Sale has now started 38 games in his big league career and is 22-10 in those starts with a 2.93 ERA. Yeah, that is good. Really good.

Last night, he beat the Angels. He did not allow a run. He struck out twelve. Ho hum. As maligned as they have been this season, the Angels do have some bats. Granted, they are all not working together so far this season. But for Sale to limit them to three hits in seven and two-thirds innings is pretty terrific.

For a long time, I have been fearful for Sale. He is six feet, six inches tall and weights only 180 pounds. He looks like the wind can blow him over. He came straight out of college for the White Sox when they selected him with t...

White Sox's Sale stifles Angels again

Chris Sale stifled the Los Angeles Angels' bats for the second time in six days, scattering three hits over 7 2-3 innings with a season-high 12 strikeouts on Friday night to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 3-0 victory.

Alex Rios and Adam Dunn homered for the White Sox, who extended their winning streak to a season-high four games.

Sale (5-2) threw 79 of his 113 pitches for strikes in another competitive duel with fellow lefty C.J. Wilson, whom he beat 3-0 last Sunday night at Chicago. In that gem, Sale retired the first 19 batters and settled for a one-hitter -- Mike Trout's one-out single in the seventh inning -- while recording his first shutout in the major leagues.

Sale extended his scoreless streak to 23 innings. It was his sixth straight start of at least seven innings while allowing fewer than three earned runs - the longest such streak by a White Sox pitcher since a seven-game stretch by Mark Buehrle in 2007.

Addison Reed pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save in 15 chances.

Josh Phegley's Emergence in AAA is Hard to Ignore

White Sox fans everywhere are starting to get a little frustrated with catcher Tyler Flowers. While filling the shoes of the departed AJ Pierzynski in your first season as a full-time big league starter is a difficult task, Flowers’ play both at and behind the plate have left a lot to be desired, as fans are questioning the organization’s ringing endorsement of Flowers as the club’s backstop of the future.

However, it’s beginning to look more and more like Flowers is no longer the only option for the White Sox in terms of future catchers.

You may have seen in recent GSB! Farm Reports many mentions of catcher Josh Phegley. That’s because he’s on an absolute tear for AAA Charlotte, and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Over the past 10 games, Phegley has hit .429 with six, yes, six home runs and fifteen RBIs while hitting mostly out of the fifth spot in the order.

MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins took note of longtime nemesis Paul Konerko's return to the White Sox lineup for Wednesday's series finale.

They probably should have been more concerned with the guy batting ahead of him.

Chicago first baseman Adam Dunn he of the .137 batting average continued to torment the Twins, blasting two homers and driving in five runs as the White Sox took the rubber match Wednesday by a 9-4 final at Target Field. Dunn's two-home run performance came one game after he hit a solo homer in Tuesday's 4-2 Chicago victory.

"He had a nice day," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said of Dunn. "He's a strong young man, and when you throw the ball up there he's going to get you."

Twins starter Mike Pelfrey was the first victim to leave a pitch up to Dunn. Pelfrey hung a 3-2 changeup to Dunn, and the Chicago first baseman drove it over the wall in center field for his eighth homer of the season and second in as many days.

Twins look to take second series against White Sox

If the Chicago White Sox are to move out of last place in the AL Central, they'll need to string together some victories.
The visiting White Sox can start by winning two straight for the first time in almost two weeks Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.
Adam Dunn and Dayan Viciedo hit back-to-back homers in the second inning and Tyler Flowers delivered a tiebreaking double in the eighth to help back a strong outing from Jake Peavy in Chicago's 4-2 win over Minnesota (18-18) on Tuesday.
The White Sox (16-21), who are 4-6 since last winning two in row at Texas to open May, hope to get hot after Peavy and two relievers held the Twins to six hits one night after a 10-3 series-opening defeat.
Despite spending 45 minutes working on defense prior to the game, the White Sox committed an error in a sixth straight contest. However, their AL-worst 30th of the season did not prove costly in the end.
"It's a focal point," manager Robin Ventura said. "It's important and it's going to s

Umpires badly blow two calls in Twins-White Sox game

The umpiring crew for the Minnesota Twins-Chicago White Sox game on Tuesday night badly blew a pair of calls in Chicago’s 4-2 win at Target Field.

The first blown call occurred with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Justin Morneau was on second when Oswaldo Arcia singled to right field. Morneau tried to score on the play, but Alex Rios’ throw clearly beat him. Morneau tried to do a hook slide to avoid catcher Tyler Flowers. Morneau slid around Flowers and tried to reach back to touch the plate, but Flowers tagged him while he was sliding by. Believing Morneau was out, Flowers pretty much gave up after that. However, home plate umpire Jordan Baker missed the tag and instead gave credit to Morneau for reaching over and touching the plate after he was tagged. That bad call literally gave Minnesota a run and made the score 2-1 White Sox.
It’s understandable how Baker missed the call from his angle, so that’s why it would have been great for him to review it.
The next blown call was...

Putting Dunn & Keppinger's Pathetic Starts in Context

Slow starts to the season are nothing new for the White Sox.

The Palehose have played sub-.500 baseball each year since 2008 through 35 games (which is where we are at right now), which has resulted in only one playoff appearance in that time frame.

The starts individual players have had tell the story, as since the turn of the century, there have been 21 different instances where a player has hit either below .200 or recorded an OPS below .550 through 35 games. In nine of those, the player was below in both categories.

This season, we have two of our Palehose gracing us with such badness: Adam Dunn and Jeff Keppinger.

To take a look at just how bad they have done, here’s a look at the bottom ten in each stat category in the “slash line” (batting average/on-base percentage/slugging percentage/OPS) since 2000 through 35 games:

AVG through 35 games (min. 20 starts)

 2001 Royce Clayton- .110

 2013 Adam Dunn- .137

 2011 Adam Dun...

Chicago White Sox: Sale almost perfect on Mother’s Day.

There aren’t many seasons where Chicago White Sox fans say they can look forward to a series against the Angels. However, the Angels have been having many of the same problems as the Sox this year. With an offense as stacked as they have (Hamilton, Trout, AND Pujols), it’s hard to believe that this is the case.
That being said, the White Sox did a pretty good job of making the Angels look good during the first two games of this series.
Sale with a lot to smile about
Fortunately, Chris Sale put an end to all that with his masterful performance Sunday afternoon as he led the White Sox (15-20) to a 3-0 victory. Sale (4-2) had a rough outing April 13th against the Indians, but other than that he has been pretty consistent this season, with his best outing coming today against the Angels. The young ace took a perfect game into the seventh until Mike Trout took a single back up the middle. Excluding a ninth-inning throwing error by Alexei, Trout’s hit was the only time during the game tha...

White Sox pitcher Hector Santiago forgets to bat against Mets (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Hector Santiago is not used to hitting, as he plays for an American League team. That would probably explain why Santiago was nowhere to be found when his at-bat came up with two outs in the top of the sixth inning during Tuesday night's game at Citi Field.

The game was briefly delayed as Santiago was in the locker room and had to be reminded by teammates that it was his turn to bat. Santiago could be seen scrambling for a helmet and a bat, and was understandably jeered by Mets fans as he came up to face pitcher Matt Harvey. Santiago struck out looking to end the inning.

Santiago did pitch seven shutout innings against the Mets, but didn't get the win as the White Sox were shut out and lost the game 1-0 in 10 innings.
