Retirement of Brian Urlacher: Remembering the Face of the Bears theLast 15 Years

Many teams in the NFL have periods of success defined by elite starting quarterbacks; Montana and the 49ers, Aikman and the Cowboys, Brady and the Patriots etc. However, for Chicago, a team whose history is defined by defense and more specifically middle linebackers (Mike Singletary and Dick Butkus), it is only fitting that BrianUrlacher retire in Chicago, where he spent his entire 13-year career.

Brian Urlacher played his college career at the University of New Mexico, and though he got off to a slow start his first two years, his final two years were something to remember. When Rocky Long was hired for Urlacher’sjunior year, his raw athleticism was realized and he played various positions on the field, including strong safety, wide receiver, and return specialist. In his career, Urlacher had 442 tackles, 11 sacks, 11 forced fumbled, and three interceptions, to go along with his six touchdown receptions and five kick returns for touchdowns. Already considered one o...

So What's Next for Brian Urlacher?

The Chicago Bears already said good bye to Brian Urlacher, but the former great didn't decide to call it a career until yesterday (Wednesday). Personally, I didn't see him really hanging it up; I thought he was likely going to drag his feet filing his papers and as soon as someone got hurt and teams had a need he would be back.

After reading some of his comments in the Chicago Tribune I've changed my mind. We've seen the last of Brian Urlacher in a football uniform.

These comments appeared in a Chicago Tribune article:

Honestly, I'm done. I don't want to play anymore. ... As old as I am and as much as my body is sore right now, I'm tired of working out.
Well it doesn't get more clear then that. When you don't want to put the work in anymore it is time to walk away.

So that brings the million dollar question to mind--what's next for Brian Urlacher? Is he the next experiment for ESPN? Will he just fade away? Coaching?

Or will he relive his wrestling

Brian Urlacher's Hall of Fame Career Comes to an End

For 13 seasons Brian Urlacher patrolled the middle of the field for the Chicago Bears. On Wednesday morning he announced his retirement from the NFL.It has been a strange offseason for Urlacher. His contract with the Bears ran out after the 2012 season and after rejecting an offer from the Bears to return he decided to test the free agent market. After not finding anything that was to his liking he decided to call it a career.Urlacher enjoyed a Hall of Fame career with Chicago and will be remembered as one of the greatest linebackers to play the position. There were very few things Urlacher could not do on the field. He combined great size, speed and the ability to cover in space to become one of the games best defensive players. The Tampa-2 defense fit Urlacher’s unique skill set perfectly and he was able to lead some of the NFL’s best defenses.Urlacher was able to read and react so quickly on the field that when ball carriers thought they had an opening to exploit the defense he was a...

Facing the facts: 'I'm just not quite the same player I used to be,' says Brian Urlacher

Former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher took a long look in the mirror after lingering in free agency without any takers. At 34, he knew he his limitations. Rather than waiting it out for the rest of the offseason, and eventually get picked up by some team, he decided to go out on his own terms and face reality.

"Honestly, I'm just not quite the same player I used to be," Urlacher told Rich Eisen during a podcast on Wednesday. "If I was the same player that I was three or four years ago, I think I'd still want to play, but I'm not. After I hurt my knee, I just haven't been able to do the same things I want to do. So, it's frustrating for me, and I don't want to do it anymore."

He's now apparently at peace with himself, and although he still is irked by the whole process with the Bears and his eventual departure, he doesn't harbor any grudges. He does think however, that if Lovie Smith were still around, things would'...

The Bears Brian Urlacher’s Legacy

When the Baltimore Ravens won the Superbowl the clichéd quote, “Defense Wins Championships,” ran through my mind. Ray Lewis and his tenacious defense proved that even in a league dominated by high-powered offenses, the defense should never be ignored. In fact, it may be essential to winning a championship. However, to call Super Bowl 47 a defensive standoff would be wrong. With 65 points scored between the two teams this game was the definition of a “shootout.” So, what does that say about today’s game as a whole? Offense dominates.

Brian Urlacher retires as a Chicago Bear, leaves historic legacy

This morning Brian Urlacher announced his retirement after 13 years with the Chicago Bears.
The Bears decided not to re-sign Urlacher after last season when a reasonable contract deal couldn’t be met. It was an emotional moment for the organization and its fans, but it was a decision I supported and thought necessary for the Bears to stay competitive in a tough NFC North division.

Despite that, it was still sad to see Urlacher go. He’s the only player on the Bears I remember watching throughout most of my life, and a player that became iconic not only in Chicago but around the NFL.
Even though he wasn’t happy with the Bears’ decision, I think it means a lot to the fans that he decided to retire as a Bear. It wouldn’t feel right otherwise.

He brought credibility and pride to the Bears’ defense, and fans and opponents knew and respected that. He was an eight-time Pro Bowler, winner of the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award in 2005, and retires as the franchise’s leader in ta...

Bears LB Brian Urlacher retires

Brian Urlacher has retired after 13 stellar NFL seasons.

"After spending a lot of time this spring thinking about my NFL future, I have made a decision to retire," the former Chicago Bears star linebacker posted Wednesday on Whosay.com.

The Bears opted not to re-sign Urlacher, and he found the free-agent market dry. Rumors connected him to the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings, but both teams denied interest.

A four-time All-Pro and the 2005 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Urlacher saw his effectiveness limited by injuries in recent years. He missed four games in 2012 and made 68 tackles in the 12 games he did play.

Urlacher, 34, played his entire career with the Bears after they made him a first-round pick in 2000 out of New Mexico.

"Although I could continue playing, I'm not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that's up to my standards," he said in the statement. "When considering this, along with the fact that I could retire after a 13-year career

Urlacher wasn’t getting the interest he thought he would. I could see a team signing him during training camp or the regular if a key player went down with an injury, but he would have to wait a little and he clearly wasn’t willing to.

Brian Urlacher announced his retirement today following 13 impressive seasons in the NFL. Urlacher was released by the Bears earlier this Spring and it was rumored he may end up on another team, but that plan seems to be off the table. Best wishes, Brian.
Urlacher posted the following on his Whosay account:

Lance Briggs Is The New Leader Of The Chicago Bears Defense

Lance Briggs has been a force to be reckoned with ever since he arrived in Chicago back in 2003. Once paired with former Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, the two would combined to be one of the best sets of linebackers in the National Football League.Over the previous couple of seasons Urlacher has had to deal with numerous nagging injuries. Some of which have caused him to miss games. In his absence, Briggs stepped up as the leader of the defense. And now with Urlacher no longer in the picture, Briggs will now be the defensive captain for the Chicago Bears. What this means is that the 32-year-old Arizona alumnis will now call the defensive huddles. He will also bear the responsibility of keeping the other 10 defensive players by his side focused on the task at hand. The younger players will also look to him for guidance and leadership. The Bears coaching staff will also place a lot of expectations on him as well. While it may seem like a challenge, I believe that Briggs is prepared...

Linebacker Lance Briggs will call defensive signals this season

Chicago Bears outside linebacker Lance Brigg will have a new responsibility in 2013, calling the defensive plays.

The departure on Brian Urlacher has brought a need for someone to receive the calls from the coaching staff and relay them to the defense.

Briggs will be the guy with a green dot on the back of his helmet this year, but he’s up to the challenge.

Brigg has bee accustomed to being more of a lead by example player, but admits now that Urlacher is gone, he’s been more of a vocal leader.

“I’m just more vocal now,” Briggs said, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

“We have a lot of great players so for me it’s just getting guys aligned and getting them in best position to compete.”

“It’s very different,” Briggs said. “I didn’t call the plays before, and now I am. I just have a lot of respect. I’ve been spoiled for the last 10 years.”

“These young guys are wide-eyed, flying around, very smart guys,” Briggs said. “You’ll get to know more about them o

Offensive lineman Gabe Carimi is betting on himself as he stays away from offseason training activities

Chicago Bears 2011 NFL Draft pick Gabe Carimi has drawn a lot of attention for not participating in Marc Trestman’s first offseason training program.

There has been speculation that Carimi could be on the bubble and that attending the program would help him get his footing for training camp.

However, Carimi has taken the opposite stance, staying away and clearing his mind of distraction as he prepare for maybe the battle for his career in Chicago.

He has been working out at the O-Line Performance Academy in Arizona, a performance center by former Pro Bowl lineman LeCharles Bentley.

"Any time a player opts to make an investment in himself that is outside the scope of what the team expects, that's a gamble," said Bentley, via Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune.

"That's sometimes a risk that players have to be willing to take. Sometimes, when guys are in a situation like Gabe, maybe the player feels comfortable betting on himself.

Chicago Bears Release Defensive Tackle Andre Fluellen

After spending about a month with the Bears, Andre Fluellen has been released. He will most certainly get picked up by another team as a camp body with experience but Fluellen is on the downside of his career. He played for both the Lions and Dolphins last season.

Gabe Carimi working out with LeCharles Bentley, “light years” better than last season

According to the Chicago Tribune, Bears offensive lineman Gabe Carimi has been working out with former NFL lineman LeCharles Bentley and is reportedly “light years” better than he was in 2012.
Bentley started running the O-Line Performance Academy after his career ended in 2006 and he worked out with Carimi before he was drafted in 2011. He says Carimi has to change the player he was last season.
“Gabe can’t go back to Chicago and be the player he was.” Bentley said. “If he (does), he’s failed and I’ve failed him, to be quite honest, and we’ve failed one another.”

Has Gabe Carimi Quit on the Bears, or Vice Versa?

The Chicago Bears have been holding organized team activities this week and every veteran with the team made it, except one - offensive lineman Gabe Carimi.
Gabe Carimi should have been there. With a new head coach, there's new plays, terminology and blocking schemes to learn. Head Coach Marc Trestman has said he believes Carimi would play guard in his offense, however Carimi has more experience at tackle, so add perfecting a new position to the "to do" list.Instead, Carimi is working out on his own in Arizona. Before this week's OTAs, Carimi, the Bears first round pick of the 2011 draft, was on the bubble to make the roster, never mind compete for a starting role. With the signing of three veteran offensive linemen and drafting two more, it is a clear sign the coaches hated what they had in offensive linemen. It appeared Carimi was going to battle with James Brown, a second-year undrafted free agent, for the last roster spot. Super bad for a first round pick of ju...

Bears with “No Signs” of Return for Israel Idonije, Release Andre Fluellen

The Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs writes Monday that the Chicago Bears show “no signs that indicate [free agent defensive end Israel Idonije] will be returning to the organization.”
Idonije, 32, has spent the last nine years of his ten year professional career with the Bears. His first year in the league, 2003, was spent with the Cleveland Browns.
The team has expressed interest in bringing back Idonije, but for the right price. Idonije has made few visits on his free agent tour to gauge his true market price.
In related Chicago defensive line news, the team terminated the contract of defensive tackle Andre Fluetten who was signed on April 9 to a one-year deal. He played in 56 games in the last five seasons, mostly with the Detroit Lions.
We have Idonije listed as the No. 7 player in our Best Available Free Agents list.
