Exploring Matthew Stafford’s record versus winning teams: Part 1

As has been well documented around these parts, the Detroit Lions have gone 1-23 against winning teams with quarterback Matthew Stafford taking snaps. The problem with laying all these losses at Stafford’s feet is that it takes the results of these games out of context. The table itself makes clear that Stafford himself has put [...]The post Exploring Matthew Stafford’s record versus winning teams: Part 1 by Russ Thomas appeared first on WCSN - The Water Cooler Sports Network.

Lions sign former Jaguars tight end Matt Veldman

According to the team’s website, the Detroit Lions have signed former Jaguars tight end Matt Veldman.

Veldman signed with the Jaguars following the 2012 NFL Draft as a rookie free agent.

In 2012, Veldman was on Jacksonville’s injured reserve list after a preseason ACL injury.

He was released last week to make room for quarterback Mike Kafka.

	DetroitLions.com writes:

'New Lions tight ends coach Bobby Johnson was the Jaguars tight ends coach last season, therefore very familiar with what Veldman brings to the table.'

Hope she can drop the baby weight T…
When Reggie Bush’s baby daughter was born, his former girlfriend and reality star Kim Kardashian reportedly sent him out a congratulatory text. Now it seems the tables have turned, and this time Reggie is the one tweeting out congrats. Our source tells us Reggie texted Kim Kardashian last night to congratulate her on the birth of her daughter with Rapper Kanye West. It’s nice to see the former couple remaining friendly. I wonder how Kris Humphries feels right about now. -TO

Mikel Leshoure:I’ve got to get healthy

Detroit Lions running back Mikel Leshoure had a prime opportunity to seize the lead dog spot in the backfield when Jahvid Best was not able to return due to his long-standing issue with concussions.
Unfortunately nagging issues with injuries and consistency forced the Lions to pick up Reggie Bush to assume that role after Leshoure did not live up to expectations in 2012.

Jason Jones shunning media spotlight to count towards Lions

Jason Jones hasn’t stirred up much talk since he signed a three-year contract with the Detroit Lions in the March. But the relatively quiet transmission on that end shouldn’t be taken as a bad omen. Jones has good reason for his absence from the media spotlight, since the defensive end has been instead concentrating on making his presence felt on the Detroit Lions’ defensive line this offseason.

"Yeah, that's cool with me,” Jones said on recently not drawing enough media interest. “I try to stay out of it. I don't really like the spotlight too much. I know I'm a good player, so none of that stuff really affects me, whether or not they're talking (about me) or not.”

"I like staying low, under the radar, and just go out there and work, I came here to make plays for our defense,” Jason Jones talked about his main focus this offseason.

But while Jones has managed to slide under the media’s radar after restricting himself to a corner in the locker ro...

Lions legend Lem Barney calls football “deadly”; later apologizes

Mark Snyder / Detroit Free Press Detroit Lions legend and football Hall of Famer Lem Barney sat in front of dozens of kids who wish to make a football their career Friday and told them not to. Barney spoke at the Sound Mind Sound Body Camp in Southfield (MI), which was also attended by Mark Dantonio and Brady Hoke, and told high school kids that wishes he would have been a cab driver or truck driver instead of a Hall of Fame cornerback. Barney, who was the first Lions superstar who wore #20, went on to predict that football will be extinct within two decades. “People often ask me do I miss the game, do I wish I could still play with all the money they’re making today. Even with all of that, I’d say ‘Heck no. The game is becoming more deadly today. It’s a great game, and I think it’s the greatest game if you like gladiators. It’s the greatest game for yesteryear’s gladiators. But in the next 10 to 20 years, society will alleviate football altogether because of how strong it’s becom...

Bill Nagy to Badgers Football 2013

Well, since the newcomers don't have number assignments and the official roster is stuck on the spring numbers there is no one on the currently UW roster occupying No. 76. Kind of a big deal since we're counting down the roster and all, but alas... The good old way back machine helps us fill that void.

So in honor of the history of No. 76 we declare today Bill Nagy to Badger football.

	Nagy's story at Wisconsin:

	- He played in a total of 29 games in his career, starting just 11 of them. He did start 8 games in his final season at UW, but was mainly due to injury in front of him.
	- Nagy was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten by the coaches in 2010, an academic All-Big Ten pick in 2007, and a preseason All-Big Ten pick by Phil Steele in 2009.
	- Nagy was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 7th round of the 2011 draft and became a starter before suffering a broken leg.
	- He currently plays for the Detroit Lions as a guard, moving from his original positi...

Detroit WR Ryan Broyles Confident He Will Avoid PUP List

The Detroit Lions are really hoping that Ryan Broyles will be all systems go this year after taking a chance on him last season drafting the injured receiver in the second round. When he finally got a shot to play in 2012, he did not disappoint. He immediately made an impact and was poised for a strong finish till he tore his ACL and went on injured reserve.
Now, only six months removed from surgery, it appears that he’s ready to resume his playing career. Broyles participated in all three days of the Lions recent mini camp and is convinced he will be given the green light when training camp opens in a couple of weeks. If that is the case, we can peg Broyles as a sleeper candidate among wide receivers with potential to overtake Nate Burleson as the starter.
Ryan should be a PPR monster opposite Calvin Johnson if starting and should be a serviceable WR3 even if he doesn’t win the starting job. He is worth drafting in all formats at the moment. But because of his injury history, it’s ...

Bush's role with Lions like his was with Saints

The Detroit Lions plan to put Reggie Bush in the backfield to take toss sweeps around the outside and to hit holes between the tackles.

They also want to line up Bush as a wide receiver at times and to send him in motion, hoping to keep defenses guessing about how Matthew Stafford might get him the ball.

Bush can't wait for the opportunity to play early and often each time Detroit plays in 2013.

''I definitely want to show I can be an every-down back,'' he said before the Lions closed their three-day minicamp on Thursday. ''I wanted to prove to myself and to people that I could do it all and I wasn't a utility back.''

The Lions certainly aren't paying Bush big bucks just to be on the field for a down once in a while.

Detroit signed Bush to a $16 million, four-year contract in March, counting on him becoming the big-play running back it hasn't had since concussions took Jahvid Best off the field.

''I could've signed back with Miami, Arizona,&#39

Schwartz shares minicamp-ending message to players

ALLEN PARK, Mich. Stay out of trouble. Dont get arrested.

The Detroit Lions broke their three-day mandatory minicamp Thursday, thus ending their off-season workout program.

Many of the players quickly headed out of town for the summer. They wont be back together again until late July for the start of the real training camp.

The concern between now and then is whether they can avoid the off-the-field problems that plagued the team a year ago when multiple player arrests created a distraction for the entire organization.

That issue was part of coach Jim Schwartzs minicamp-ending message to the players.

We talked about whats expected of them between now and the beginning of training camp, both from an off-the-field point of view and also what they need to do to get ready to come in in great shape to compete for jobs, Schwartz said.

No news will be good news for the Lions this summer.

Theyre coming off a 4-12 record with mounting speculation that Schwartz and general manager Martin Mayhew need to return t

Reggie Bush downplays minicamp injury:

While wrapping up Wednesday’s practice, the Detroit Lions got their first injury scare of mandatory minicamp when running back Reggie Bush went down with an ankle injury.

The 28-year-old Bush took a screen pass and went to make a cut when he planted awkwardly on his left foot. Bush stayed on the grass for a few second, and when he finally got up he seemed to be limping. But, Bush didn’t miss any snaps with the first-team offense as he quickly returned to the lineup. Bush didn’t seem to be having any issues with his ankle while running a few extra passing routes with Joique Bell and Mikel Leshoure after practice.

However, for a second there, players and coaches on the field collectively held their breaths over the unclear state of Bush’s injury, since he is considered a big part of the Lions offense and losing him could be a huge hit to their running game.

"I understand, yes," Bush said with a laugh, after his ankle injury that gave everyone a little scare today...

Cunningham gauges the new additions to his defense

ALLEN PARK, Mich. The Detroit Lions defense was in need of a makeover, and it got one.

The Lions ranked 27th in the NFL in points allowed last season, 13th in total defense, 16th in run defense and 14th in pass defense.

Defensive ends Cliff Avril and Kyle Vanden Bosch are gone. So is linebacker Justin Durant. The secondary will also have a new look.

With the team currently in the middle of a mandatory minicamp, here are defensive coordinator Gunther Cunninghams early impressions of some of the key additions to his unit:

On first-round draft pick Ziggy Ansah, who grew up in Africa and has only three years of football experience:

They (Brigham Youngs coaching staff) asked him to do more things than any college player Ive ever seen at that position. He played every position up front. I dont know how he learned all those things that quickly. Hes got a good feel for the game. He has good eyes. He sees the game. He has unique ability to slip gaps.

The upside of Ziggy Ansah is his character. Theres no doubt i

Louis Delmas still feeling pain in his knees

When Detroit Lions safety Louis Delmas can stay on the field, he is a difference maker in the secondary. The thing is, Delmas hasn’t been able to stay on the field. He lost 8 games last year and 13 combined over the last two seasons due to pain in his knees. According the NFL.com, the start of this year is no different. Delmas was present at the team’s mandatory mini-camp, but did not participate telling reporters (and getting testy) that the pain in his knee feels “just like it did last year.” “If he needs to be managed, he’s a guy who can handle that,” said general manager Martin Mayhew when asked if the team has considered limiting Delmas in practice. This past March Delmas was given a mostly incentive laden contract extension. If he can’t prove to the team that he can stay on the field, you can bet you will be seeing someone new pair up with the other team’s safety Glover Quin. Need NFL Tickets?
Detroit Lions 2013: 10 Things We Learned From OTAs

With training camp quickly approaching, the Detroit Lions are winding down their last OTA’s before mini- camp begins. This season is extremely interesting for this Lions and yet with very little to take from OTA’s, there are some things we can learn.#10. Reggie Bush likes to talk. With the signing of running back Reggie Bush, there is no doubt that the Lions offense has added a new dimension and versatility. But with new players come new quotes. For years Lions players have talked Super Bowl, playoff guarantees and mostly non-sense. This year is no different. Bush began by saying he came to Detroit to win a championship; he must not know the history of the organization. Then talked about how the offense should be high powered. “Honestly, I believe there’s no excuse for us not to have the No. 1-ranked offense. We have all the right pieces and the necessary players here to be the top offense in the league. No excuse,” Bush said. With all the preseason talking, it will be interesting t...

Surprise! Matthew Stafford is Awful (And So Are the Lions)

Remember that one year when the Detroit Lions were good? It seems like it was probably back when Detroit was actually a thriving metropolis, but it was actually just in 2011. They went 10-6 that year, made the playoffs, and then got bounced in the first round. Kind of sounds like the 2012 Vikings, actually, but don't tell anyone that.

But if you were to try and figure out WHY the team did so well that year, what would you say? Maybe Calvin Johnson was playing out of his mind? Maybe the defense applied pressure to opposing teams? Maybe their coach wasn't being stupid about handshakes for once? Sure, all of those things might have been a factor. Maybe even the biggest factor. But I'll tell you what WASN'T a factor:

Matthew Stafford playing well against teams with a winner record. Because in his career, he's 1-23 against teams with a winning record. PFFFFTTTT!!

Now, don't get me wrong here. It's not like I'm sitting here and comparing Matt...

Lions aren’t having Jahvid Best take neurological tests anymore

According to Anthony Kuehn of the Detroit Free-Press, the Lions are no longer having running back Jahvid Best take any neurological tests because his career is pretty much over at this point.
The most recent reports indicate that Best isn’t even taking neurological tests at this point, as it is likely his career is over. However, the Lions are keeping him on the roster despite the fact that he will almost definitely done playing.
Kuehn explains why the Lions haven’t released Best or forced him to retire.
This is a very classy move by the Lions organization, at least I hope it is motivated by compassion rather than public relations. The Lions would realize minimal if any cost savings by cutting Best and once Best gets cut he stops accruing time in the league’s pension program.

The Lions are keeping Best on the roster to pump up his post retirement benefits as high as they can and then he will retire once his contract is up. Unless, by some miracle he is able to play again.
