Coleman vs Harrell: A fight for the Packers backup job

Aaron Rodgers is questionably the best quarterback in the league right now. His accurate arm and leadership literally holds the Green Bay Packers 2013 season and Super Bowl chances. With this in mind, it is sometimes intimidating to see what lies behind Rodgers on the roster. Behind him are back up quarterbacks Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman. If Rodgers were to ever go down in an injury or lost for the season the fate of the team is in these two QB’s hands... Read more

Paul Hornung looks to score Preakness win

Former Green Bay Packers great Paul Hornung is looking to pull an upset in the Preakness with his 3-year-old colt Titletown Five - named for the number of NFL titles won by the Packers when Hornung played for them.

''We're ready to go,'' a smiling Hornung said Friday morning sitting on a bench at the stakes barn housing most of the horses running in Saturday's second leg of the Triple Crown. ''He's been on his toes, and I'm just hoping he runs good, stays sound and we can run him at Saratoga this summer.''

Hornung and former Packers teammate Willie Davis are co-owners of Titletown Five, who was named by Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. The colt is one of three from Lukas' stable taking on even-money favorite Orb.

Hornung grew up and still lives in Louisville, Ky., and has been a racing fan for most of his life.

''Orb is great horse, and I couldn't be happier for Shug,'' he said of Orb's trainer Shug McGaughey. ''It cou

Green Bay Packers Tailgate Tour makes first stop in Iowa

At the end of March, Green Bay Packers President Mark Murphy announced the stops for the eighth annual Packers Tailgate Tour! For those of you who don’t know, the Packers Tailgate Tour is a week-long event where current players, alumni and usually some staff from the front office, Murphy, travel around the state of Wisconsin visiting communities and fans. All the money raised goes to a non-profit organization that gives back to the community.

Presenting the Packers Tailgate Tour for the first time in Iowa!
For the first time ever, they were traveling to the state of Iowa and visiting Packers fans in Dubuque. As a current resident of Dubuque and loyal Packers fan, I was ECSTATIC! Not only was I going to get to interact with some former and up-and-coming Green Bay stars, but MY team has acknowledged the dedicated fans who don’t live within the borders of the land of cheese, beer and brats.
Of course, I wasn’t the only one excited for this and that showed the first day of ticket sales...

Could Fewer Touches Lead to More Production for Packers WR Randall Cobb?

Packers WR Randall Cobb.
Breakout WR/HB/KR/PR Randall Cobb touched the ball 159 times and amassed a Packers franchise record 2,342 all-purpose yards in 2012.
It was quite the season for the second-year talent out of Kentucky, and very necessary. Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson all missed significant time with injuries. Cobb, along with James Jones, stepped up to fill the void left by Jennings and Nelson and helped negate the Packers struggles running the ball.
But 159 touches is a lot for a player who is 5-foot-10 and 191 pounds. Cobb injured his ankle and missed the season finale against the Vikings. He also managed just six catches for 31 yards in two playoff games and was taken off of punt returns against the 49ers, only to see rookie Jeremy Ross **** one deep in Green Bay territory that led to a San Francisco touchdown.
I was at the wild-card win over the Vikings and watched Cobb limp around on that ankle. He was hurting. The explosion wasn’t there.
With Jennings gone, it’s assum...

Packers make the right move on offensive line

There are some notoriously bad pass-protecting offensive lines in the NFL today (ahem – Detroit), but just whom is responsible for the most sacks the last five years? The most sacked quarterback in the NFL since 2008 is none other than former MVP and Super Bowl Champion Aaron Rodgers. However, the Packers think they may have finally solved that problem this offseason.
Andy Lyons/Getty Images
There are many benefits to the Packers’ draft and develop strategy for player acquisition, and that can be fine for skill position players, when a guy can step in and begin learning the system from day one and work his way into the starting lineup, where he’s guaranteed to fit in...
Packers’ Alex Green says he was never healthy in 2012

Green Bay Packers running back Alex Green thought it was a good idea for them to beef up the running back position in this year’s draft.
“Last year, I didn’t do anything too good in the running game, so I think it was a great thing for us to get back out there, make a step in the draft and help the team win football games,” said Green, per the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
He admits he was never 100 percent healthy in 2012, after tearing his ACL the year before.
“No, I wasn’t, I wasn’t,” Green said. “I came back, I got close to it, but once I got close, then I had a couple setbacks. I was never really quite where I wanted to be, but I made great strides in the off-season. I’m definitely getting ready for this year.”
Green didn’t carry the ball at the end of the season because he simply couldn’t.
“I just couldn’t handle it anymore,” Green said. “It got to the point where it was getting worse and worse. We just had to cut back and let it heal a little bit more.”

I have a long way to go and I just hope I continue to get better over the next years.” Cobb is a dynamic player that can give opposing defenses nightmares. I think he’ll only get better as time goes on. Need NFL Tickets?
Randall Cobb is ready to take on a bigger role in the passing game: ‘it’s definitely going to be a lot more weight on me’

Greg Jennings is in Minnesota. Donald Driver is now retired, and the Green Bay Packers need someone to step up to be the number one receiver.

Randall Cobb has been a pleasant surprise since coming onto the scene as a 2nd round (64th overall) pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.

He is extremely versatile. He can play as a returner and a wide receiver, and those skills will help the Packers get over the losses Jennings and Driver.

Cobb realizes this is his opportunity after a breakout year to cement his place in the Packers offense, and carry more weight.

“I think definitely with Donald retiring and Greg leaving, it’s definitely going to be a lot more weight on me, James and Jordy’s shoulders,” Cobb said, via Weston Hodkiewicz of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Could the Packers Start a Rookie on the Offensive Line?

Packers rookie offensive lineman J.C. Tretter
If I put the over/under on the number of rookies the Packers will have starting on the offensive line for the regular season opener at 0.5, would you take the over or the under?
What if I changed the season opener to week 10, but kept the over/under at 0.5?
If you believe some of the scuttle out of the Packers rookie mini-camp, recent draftees David Bakhtiari and J.C. Tretter are in the mix to start at right tackle. There’s also an outside chance that Tretter or undrafted rookie free agent Patrick Lewis of Texas A&M could give presumed starter Evan Dietrich-Smith a challenge at center.
If I had $100 burning a hole in my pocket, I’d take the under for the season opener and the over for week 10.
I don’t think Mike McCarthy wants to start a rookie right away. Ideally, I think he’d like to see Marshall Newhouse, Derek Sherrod or Don Barclay win the job. That’s not to say the rookies won’t get their fair shot. I’m confident they will.

2013 NFL Draft Team Grades: Green Bay Packers

First Round: Datone Jones, DE, UCLA

ANALYSIS: I've been mocking this pick to them for a while, and I really love the fit. He fills Green Bay's biggest need of a pass rushing DE (in the 3-4), he provides good value, and I think he will excel in Green Bay. Not to mention he will also take tons of pressure of Matthews and Perry coming from the OLB position. It was a tossup between Williams and Jones here, but I love this pick.

GRADE: A

Second Round: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama

Tons of mock drafts had the Packers taking Lacy in the first round, but they were able to sit back and wait till their second round selection to grab him. Amazing. Aaron Rodgers finally has a running game; opposing defenses should be very worried.

GRADE: A+

Fourth Round: David Bakhtiari, C/G/T, Colorado / J.C. Tretter, OG/C, Cornell / Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA

An amazing fourth round for the Packers. Bakhtiari can play absolutely any position on the line, and Tretter can play any o...

Packers Announce More Roster Moves

The Packers announced more roster moves on Monday
The Green Bay Packers announced more roster moves on Monday. General Manager Ted Thompson announced that the Packers have signed five players who took part in this weekend’s rookie orientation camp.
Those signed are fullback Jonathan Amosa, linebacker Donte Savage, cornerback Brandon Walker, wide receiver Tyrone Smith and linebacker Jarvis Wilson.
The team also cut linebacker Micah Johnson and fullback Ryan Roberson. Roberson was recently added to the team’s roster and spent a mere few days there before being let go. Johnson was added to the team’s practice squad at the tail and of last season.
The team now has 87 of the 90 potential offseason roster spots full. As with any personnel moves that Thompson makes, it’s anyone’s guess if and how he chooses to address those three open spots.

B.J. Coleman is looking to land the backup QB job behind Aaron Rodgers

B.J. Coleman was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 7th round of the 2012 NFL Draft, 243rd overall.

Coleman in his second year has turned enough heads at minicamp and OTA’s that his name is coming up as the frontrunner to be the backup for Aaron Rodgers.

When you’re trying to get behind a guy who just signed a $125 million dollar contract, the buck stops there unless Rodgers gets injured.

However, being the backup to Rodgers has its perks, ask Matt Flynn who turned two regular season games in place of the Packers starter, and played well enough to be a hot commodity in the 2012 free agent market.

It’s an opportunity to learn from one of the best quarterback in the NFL, and at minicamp so far, in his second year Coleman isn’t pulling any punches challenging Graham Harrell for the second seat in command.

“(The coaches) really worked hard on getting me out of that pocket and learning how to throw on the run,” Coleman said, via Pete Dougherty of PackersNews.com.

McCarthy Closely Monitoring Rookie Running Backs

Undrafted rookie running back Angelo Pease
It’s only been a few days and already the rookies are making an impression on Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy. That’s what players are supposed to do and especially guys who are anything but guaranteed a roster spot. That, alone, isn’t earth-shattering news.
But as we have seen before, this team has had success finding some gems in the undrafted free agent pool. One such player is running back Angelo Pease. During the first day of drills, McCarthy was so caught off guard by one of Pease’s runs that he thought he was watching second round draft pick Eddie Lacy. It’s pretty safe to say that Lacy is a lock to stick on this year’s roster. For Pease, who rarely saw the field for a very good Kansas State team last season, that comparison is a good early sign.
Here is what McCarthy had to say after practice:
“That’s a big time cut. Frankly, I thought it was Eddie Lacy, the way he dropped his weight and hit the hole,” McCarthy gushed

Packers rookie Datone Jones sends a message to 49ers on Colin Kaepernick and the read option: 'I don’t think they’re going to be able to run him like that'

There has been a lot of talk on how NFL defenses will adjust to the read-option that is becoming popular by the minute. For Green Bay Packers rookie defensive lineman Datone Jones, it's b not that bigger deal, he defended it during his college year. However, he stated that while it's a nice wrinkle to have for an offense, if the 49ers intend to making a living off it, they might want to stockpile QB's because Colin Kaepernick won't last an entire season running it. According to Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press Gazette, while the 49ers enjoyed great success with it, the Packers are one of the team taking a special interest in stopping it. The team got an up close and personal look in the 2012 playoffs and the results weren't good as Kaepernick ran wild in route to defeating the Packers. Hence the drafting of Jones, who is one piece to building the plan to stop the new craze read option. "I thought he was pretty good," Jones said, "b...

Three-year comparison: Morgan Burnett vs. Nick Collins

Morgan Burnett and Nick Collins
When the Packers were forced to release Nick Collins prior to the 2012 season, they were left with a gaping hole at the most important position in the secondary.
Collins, a three-time Pro Bowler, was among the best safeties in football at the time he suffered a career-threatening neck injury in 2011, while his counterpart, Morgan Burnett, was coming off a season-ending injury of his own in his second NFL season.
Burnett’s rookie year (2010) ended in week four, and Collins’ 2011 season–and possibly career–ended in week two. Those six games comprised the entirety of the Collins/Burnett Era at safety for the Packers.
In 2010, the Packers selected Burnett with the 71st overall pick in the third round. Three years later and entering the final year of his rookie contract, Burnett may be poised to fill Collins’ shoes as the team’s key defensive playmaker.
Athletically, Burnett compares favorably to the former second-team All-Pro safety.
At the 2010 NFL Scout...
