The Cardinals started the 2012 season off 4-0 to only finish the season with a 5-11 record and pretty much the worst statistical team in the NFL.After acknowledging how bad his team was the first thing owner Bill Bidwill did was gut the team from the coaching staff down to all the overpaid players that couldn't stay healthy and on the field. Now with Coach of the Year Bruce Arians running things in the desert, here is the rookie class he and his new coaching staff have added to return the Cardinals to their Super Bowl XLIII season.Arizona Cardinals Rookie Class of 2013Draft Picks 1st Round: Jonathan Cooper – Offensive Guard2nd Round: Kevin Minter – Inside Linebacker3rd Round: Tyrann Mathieu – Defensive Back4th Round: Earl Watford – Offensive Guard5th Round: Stepfan Taylor – Running Back6th Round: Ryan Swope: Wide Receiver6th Round: Andre Ellington – Running Back7th Round: D.C.
Cardinals backfield a balance of risk, reward

TEMPE, Ariz. The starting running back is coming off an ACL tear 16 months ago, an Achilles injury that limited him in 2012 and a tiff with his coach that led to his suspension late last season for conduct detrimental to the team.
The No. 2 back is coming off his second straight season-ending injury, has a reconstructed knee that took more than a year to heal and has played just five games since his selection in the second round (38th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.
Feeling good about the Arizona backfield?
Well, before you go getting yourself into a Cardinal kind of funk, consider the potential upside that Rashard Mendenhall and Ryan Williams carry into the 2013 season.
Mendenhall signed a one-year deal worth 2.5 million that includes up to another 1 million in incentives. Williams is entering that critical third year of his contract with little evidence to convince the team that he figures into its long-term plans.
Built-in motivation? Coach Bruce Arians thinks so.
Yeah, if you want to get paid, Arians sai

2013 TSHQ CFB Preseason Top 25: #4 Stanford Cardinal

As another off season of College Football material kicks off, this year marks the third year I’ll throw my hat in the ring and look at a number of topics and categories. In the process I’ll look to do everything from predicting next year’s 25 best teams, identify the games of the year, narrow down the Heisman field, identify those replacing 2012′s stars and ultimately make predictions for each league, culminating in a national championship pick. They’ll be many things I’ll be ridiculed for. There will be a number of things that will surprise some people. Ultimately you’ll come away from the next 6 months of material as ready for the college football season as I can possibly make you. While I’ll be sure to miss on things I would like to remind the skeptics I did correctly predict the same number of bowl teams preseason as Phil Steele a year ago as well as top him in BCS Bowl participants predicted before the year. Nonetheless I’m not putting out any magazines soon so keep buying his for the

Highlight Wednesday: Stanford QB Josh Nunes

Stanford QB Josh Nunes never got any Highlight Monday love, mostly because he got hurt every 4 days and eventually lost his job to Kevin Hogan, but now that he's "retiring" after a career-ending weightlifting injury we felt like we had to give him some very gentle daps. Here's Nunes leading the Cardinal over USC last year in what everybody thought was an upset:

Good luck in the real world kid. At least that Stanford degree won't hurt you...unlike everything else on Earth.

Stanford Football: Cardinal QB Josh Nunes retiring following injury

Stanford quarterback Josh Nunes has decided to do what no athlete ever wants to do before he’s ready—hang up the cleats.

According to The Associated Press, Nunes has no other option after completely tearing his right chest muscle in February. He is set to medically retire.

"The injury shouldn't have happened, and we're not sure why it happened," said Josh’s dad, Tim Nunes. "It's not something that could've been prevented. Doctors told us it's rare for quarterbacks. Just a freak accident."

Nunes, an upcoming senior, missed the entire spring session but had every intention to dress this fall in hopes of a full recovery. Now it seems as if his chest won’t heal the correct way, preventing him furthering his football career.

As Andrew Luck’s successor, Nunes started the first nine games for Stanford, including what was then a major upset over No. 1 USC.

However, he proved very inconsistent and inefficient as a passer and was ultimate...

Freak Accident Ends Football Career For Stanford QB

Josh Nunes had a tough task ahead of him when he stepped in behind center for the Stanford Cardinal--that Andrew Luck guy left a pretty lasting impression. Little did he know that it would all come to an end for him not because he got laid out by a blitzing linebacker or pancaked by two defensive linemen.

He suffered a career ending injury just lifting weights.

Nunes was working out on bench press according to his Dad--a normal off-season workout--when the weight came crashing down on his chest causing a complete tear of his right chest muscle.

“The injury shouldn’t have happened and we’re not sure why it happened,” Tim Nunes (Josh's Dad) said. “It’s not something that could’ve been prevented. Doctors told us it’s rare for quarterbacks. Just a freak accident.”
The injury is one that he could come back from, but takes about 12 months after surgery to do so. Rather than risk further injury he has opted to retire from the game instead.

Stanford quarterback Josh Nunes was forced to retire from football Monday after previously suffering what coach David Shaw called a “freak injury” that kept him out of spring practices. Shaw said Nunes hurt himself during a workout in February before spring practices began. The school didn’t go into the details of what happened, but the AP’s Antonio Gonzalez is here to fill in the blanks.
Stanford QB Nunes medically retires

Stanford quarterback Josh Nunes is retiring from football after he injured his throwing arm in February and missed spring practice.

Stanford also announced Monday that fullback Geoff Meinken was not going to return for a fifth year of eligibility because a knee injury.

Nunes started nine games last season before being replaced by Kevin Hogan. He completed 52.8 percent of his passes and threw for 1,643 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season.

Coach David Shaw said before spring practice that Nunes suffered a ''freak injury'' to his right arm during a workout. Stanford's announcement did not specify Nunes' medical problem.

The junior was likely to be Hogan's backup this season. Freshmen Evan Crower and Dallas Lloyd will compete for the No. 2 spot on depth chart.

Cardinals Select Stanford RB Stefan Taylor (Rd.5, No.140)

With the 140th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Cardinals select Stanford RB Stefan Taylor. The Cardinal’s running back proved this season that he was capable of maintaining his level of play even without Andrew Luck at QB. While he isn't exceptional in any one facet of the game, he is technically sound, and well rounded. Taylor is possibly the safest back in this class due to his ability to not only pass protect, but to catch the football, which will make him invaluable on third downs.

Falcons draft Stanford TE Toilolo in 4th round

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons have selected Stanford tight end Levine Toilolo in the fourth round of the NFL draft.

The 6-foot-8, 260-pound Toilolo is Atlanta's first offensive player of the draft after the team used its first three picks for defensive help. Toilolo will have a chance to be mentored by veteran tight end Tony Gonzalez, who put off his retirement plans to return for the 2013 season.

Toilolo had 24 catches for 393 yards and four touchdowns in 2012. He had 10 career touchdown catches.

The big tight end was the Falcons' first of four compensatory picks on Saturday, including three in the seventh round.

Falcons Select Tight End Levine Toilolo at Pick 133

How do the Falcons manage selecting players at this pace? Just a few minutes after taking a new defensive end, Dimitroff picked up gigantic tight end Levine Toilolo out of Stanford. Outside of Keith Zinger in the 7th round back in 2008, Dimitroff has never drafted a tight end. I just checked and Toilolo is the tallest tight end in the draft at just over 6'8" while still just 260lbs.

Falcons finally get a developmental tight end who sat behind Zach Ertz last year but still managed almost 400 yards and 4 touchdowns last year. Russ Lande loved Toilolo's blocking and thought some teams may consider him as a tackle. He is definitely a project and raw as a blocker and pass catcher, he remains a very athletic tight end with great size.

Hogan's new WRs emerge in Stanford's spring game

Kevin Hogan had plenty of reasons to smile despite a sloppy start in Stanford's spring game that ended with his first loss - albeit unofficial - as the starting quarterback.

At least two of them, in fact: Ty Montgomery and Michael Rector.

After losing his top tight ends and wide receivers, Hogan's new targets showed off a vertical passing game that has been sorely lacking on The Farm. Both caught touchdown passes from Hogan before the defense rallied for a 40-34 victory over the offense in the annual Cardinal & White Game on Saturday.

The defense received points depending on where it stopped the offense on the field.

''They made me look good,'' said Hogan, who threw for 170 yards and two touchdowns. ''In the end, this was just a reward for all the hard work we put in this spring session. I think we got a lot better as an offensive unit, receivers and tight ends. I thought we really grew together in this session.''

Stanford's Rose Bowl ring scales back the bling

Stanford tends to do things with a bit of class, I suppose. The program is built on high academic standards and they do things a little bit differently than others. So it should come as little surprise that Stanford's Rose Bowl rings may not have all the shine and luster that their Pac 12 North rivals from Oregon received last season. A photo of Stanford's 2013 Rose Bowl championship rings has surfaced through the Internet and shows a very classic, perhaps simple design reminiscent of a high school or college class ring. Nothing too big or shiny here, although these rings are not exactly on the cheap we would guess. Take a look... Via Imgur You will see on one side the record of 12-2, which Stanford accumulated and padded with a Pac 12 Championship Game and Rose Bowl victory. On the other side we see the Rose Bowl logo and the name of Sanford, for quarterbacks and receivers coach Mike Sanford (it's not a typo, as a quick glance might lead the eye to believe)....

Pot shirt caps Stanford drummer's ensemble

The Stanford Band is notorious for doing it’s own thing and ignoring the tradition of most marching bands. Today at the Rose Bowl, they stepped it up a notch. They poked fun at Wisconsin by using cheese puns during their performance, drummed on kitchen sinks and wore shirts advocating for marijuana to be legalized. The Stanford band has a girl wearing a mustache who is literally drumming on the kitchen sink twitpic.com/brn4le— CJ Fogler (@cjzero) January 1, 2013ESPN anchor Scott Van Pelt summed it up pretty well:Nobody gives fewer f’s than the Stanford band.— Scott Van Pelt (@notthefakeSVP) January 1, 2013I personally wondered why the band was able to do this, and if the University was okay with this occurring, and found this on Twitter..@cjzero Unlike most schools, Stanford has very little control over their band.
David Shaw cuts short interview with Cox

As the Stanford Cardinals collected a 20-14 Rose Bowl victory over the Wisconsin Badgers, ESPN sideline reporter Heather Cox tried to track down Stanford head coach David Shaw after the win. Before she started the interview, Shaw told her that he needed to go to the trophy presentation being set up on the field. As Heather attempted to quickly finish the interview, Shaw was ushered away to the presentation stage and away from her. After sending it back to the booth of Kirk Herbstreit and Brent Musberger, she says "Are you kidding" that was accidentally picked up by the microphone she was holding:

Video: Heather Cox didn’t finish her interview with David Shaw – “Are you kidding me?”

Pretty standard procedure at the end of the game, right? Sideline reporter for the network that has rights to the game grabs the head coach and gets the first interview, grabbing those first emotional words for the public. Well, ESPN’s Heather Cox was besides herself when Stanford Cardinal head coach David Shaw was pulled away by Rose Bowl officials as the interview was taking place following Stanford’s 20-14 win over Wisconsin. I am sure executives at ESPN are going to give the Rose Bowl a finger-wagging, as this is pretty much standard procedure. But still funny nonetheless. Maybe the Rose Bowl officials will tell Heather Cox that they didn’t even want her there.

Stanford DE Gardner is Wisconsin native

LOS ANGELES Calls and text messages from old friends back home have been filling Stanford defensive end Ben Gardner's cell phone with increasing frequency this month. The sudden level of interest comes as no surprise to Gardner given his team's next opponent.

"I heard from a lot of people that I haven't heard from in a while," Gardner told reporters Thursday. "Everybody's fired up about the chance for me to play Wisconsin."

None more so than Gardner himself.

Gardner, you see, grew up in Mequon, Wis., just 90 miles east of Wisconsin's campus in Madison, and dreamed of someday wearing the Badgers' cardinal and white colors. He watched Wisconsin on television every Saturday during the fall and attended a few games each season. He became a first-team all-state defensive end at Homestead High School and figured the Badgers would make for a perfect match.

Instead, Wisconsin offered Gardner a preferred walk-on position with no scholarship, while one of Gardner's h
