Titus Young is the latest athlete to publicly struggle with mental health

We like our athletes big, bold and fearless.
We tend to not allow much room for vulnerability.
They are however, quite human and as such they to fall prey to the same statistics that provide a snapshot into the sample size of American life.
Mental health awareness is gaining more exposure as the taboos and stereotypes that are associated with these various disorders are either shattered or overcome.
Recently the plight of former Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young has forced even the hardest heart to pray for the young man’s welfare.
The behavior associated with his multiple arrests are not simple cries for help.
They are an illogical pattern of behavior that may date back to incidents that occurred during his freshman days at California’s University High School.

Tyron Smith's advice to NFL rookies: 'Don't let people take advantage of you'

Last week, St. Louis Rams rookie wide receiver Tavon Austin was discussing the difficulties of adjusting to the NFL when he mentioned having to deal with family members coming from all over, looking for money.

What Austin was talking about with the Rams' official website, is similar to what Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith has endured during his first two seasons in the league.

In a story published Friday by The Dallas Morning News, Smith explains to Cowboys beat writer Brandon George how he was "betrayed" by his family when he realized money was missing from his bank account. Smith said after he signed his four-year, 12.5 million rookie contract with the Cowboys in 2011 that he gave his family members a substantial amount of money. But they wanted more.

"I feel like I shouldn't have given them so much," Smith said. "There was nothing wrong with helping them out and making sure they were taken care of, but not something to where they live the same lifestyle as you.&qu

Titus Young told ex-girlfriend I understand why OJ Simpson killed his wife

More and more disturbing news continues to come out about Titus Young. The troubled former Detroit Lions wide receiver has been arrested three times in the past month, and his ex-girlfriend filed for a restraining order against him, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reports. According to the PE’s John Asbury, Young’s ex-girlfriend filed for the restraining order on May 8, the day after it was widely reported that Young was arrested twice in one day the previous weekend. Young’s ex, with whom he shares an 8-year-old son, was granted a temporary restraining order that requires Young to stay 100 yards away from her. The PE says the ex-girlfriend wrote in her filing that she is “afraid of what he is capable of doing.” “He also has been in a mental help facility more than once and still believes that he does not have a problem,” she reportedly stated in the filing. The ex-girlfriend, who lives in Moreno Valley, Calif., accuses Young of repeatedly waiting outside her home and threatening ...

Titus Young is currently in jail and isn’t expected out anytime soon, but his Ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child still filed a restraining order against him. She is fearful of what Young might do to her. “Titus Young Sr. has been clinically diagnosed with a mental disorder and I am afraid of what he is capable of doing,” the ex-girlfriend wrote in court documents, according to the Press-Enterprise. “He also has been in a mental help facility more than once and still believes that he does not have a problem.” “He would say things like, ‘I understand why O.J. killed his wife.’ He says, ‘We’re always gonna be a family and I’m always going to be his,’” the restraining order request states. “He got mad and yelled at my neighbors and tried to fight multiple people that he doesn’t even know.” I feel bad for his son who is only 8 months old. You can’t help anyone that doesn’t want to help himself, so the best place for Titus to be is in jail, where maybe he can clear hi

After spending time in rookie minicamp with the Falcons and Browns, Lindenwood WR Andrew Helmick finally found a home on Wednesday, signing with the St. Louis Rams following a tryout. Helmick is a physically gifted 5’11, 200 lb. WR who runs a sub-4.3 40 yard dash. As a senior at Lindenwood Helmick was very productive, with over 1,300 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Rams' Trumaine Johnson pleads guilty

St. Louis Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson has pleaded guilty to reduced charges of reckless driving and refusing a breath test and received a 90-day suspended jail sentence.

A drunken driving charge filed in March was dropped as part of a plea agreement with Missoula prosecutors that requires the former University of Montana football player to pay $800 in fines, make a $2,500 donation to the county DUI Task Force and enroll in an alcohol assessment class.

Police stopped Johnson's car around 2 a.m. March 22 because he was driving without headlights.

Attorney Paul Ryan says Johnson performed well on field sobriety tests and maintains he wasn't intoxicated. Johnson appeared in Municipal Court via conference call from St. Louis.

Ryan says the NFL required Johnson to enroll in its substance abuse program. He says Johnson apologizes for any embarrassment he caused the community, the Rams or his friends and family.

Titus Young's father speaks out

The Detroit Lions thought they landed a gem when they wrangled receiver Titus Young in the 2011 draft.
What they landed was a troubled young man whose issues are playing out in theater of the world.
Young’s father Richard spoke with the Detroit Free Press a day after they spoke with the homeowner that almost shot Young after he allegedly broke into his home.
The elder Young went through Friday’s events which eventually led to his felony charges of burglary and assault on a peace officer and a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.

Receiver Tavon Austin on his newfound wealth: ‘I’ve got a lot of cousins now’

After being selected by the St. Louis Rams in this year’s NFL Draft, wider receiver Tavon Austin is learning quick just what suddenly becoming a rich man brings you – greedy gold-diggers looking to cash in on their association with you.
It’s a sad truth, but it is what it is.
“Everybody expects a lot of things from you as far as money.” Austin recently told the Rams’ official website. “Everybody wants to be around you. My phone doesn’t stop ringing now. It feels like they’re counting my bank account now. So that’s probably the hardest thing for me right now, just people.

Titus Young’s father: Son has brain disorder

Following his third arrest in a week, it became clear that Titus Young is in need of serious help.
His father, Richard, intimated as much to the Detroit News.
"We knew that something had happened to him or he was locked up again," Richard Young said on Monday. "His mind is not capable enough to go out and deal with society because of this situation."
Richard Young said Titus suffers from a disorder caused by his brain being compressed into the front of his skull, and he hasn't been taking his required medication. Doctors told Richard that treatment for Titus' issue could last up to six months.
"He's not dealing with it the way he should be," Richard Young said. "If the judge gives him a court order, then maybe he'll get the help he needs."
In an effort to bring some stability to his son, Richard took the former Lions receiver out for coffee on Friday, hours before his arrest for burglary and assaulting a police ...

Tavon Austin’s Family Won’t Stop Calling to Ask for Money From Rams First-Round Pick

Since being selected No. 8 overall in the 2013 NFL draft, Tavon Austin has found out he has a bigger family than he ever knew.
The Rams rookie hasn’t even signed his contract yet, but he said his phone is ringing off the hook with money requests. Last year’s No. 8 overall pick, Ryan Tannehill, signed a four-year, $12.7 million contract. Austin is set to earn a similar figure.
“Everybody expects a lot of things from you as far as money. Everybody wants to be around you,” Austin told StLouisRams.com. “My phone doesn’t stop ringing now. Hopefully we don’t see Austin on a sequel to ESPN’s 30 for 30: Broke one day.

St. Louis native chasing NFL dream with Rams

St. Louis The feelings washed over Robert Steeples when he first pulled the blue and gold football helmet over his braids.

"This just isn't memorabilia," he said Friday afternoon. "This is an actual Rams helmet, for me."

He had tried to avoid this state of awe. When the Memphis cornerback didn't get drafted, he and his agent ranked fifteen NFL teams that might be a good fit. He tempered expectations when his hometown St. Louis Rams ranked No. 1. But he couldn't keep his cool when the phone rang, and his hometown Rams were on the line.

"The way stuff has been falling into place for me, it's kind of like a dream," Steeples, who admitted to being a lifelong Ram's fan, said.

He now has a rookie free agent contract with the team he grew up idolizing, a chance to wear the same jersey as his football heroes, guys like Todd Lyght, Torry Holt and Marshall Faulk. In an ideal world, he becomes a London Fletcher, a Rams undrafted free agent who, as Steeples will poi

Rams finally figured out Bradford

It took three seasons, but the St. Louis Rams may have finally figured out what makes Sam Bradford tick. The conventional wisdom has been to surround Bradford with big and tall wide receivers like Austin Pettis or Brian Quick that can go up and get the ball down the field.
Every offseason, rumors swirled that all Bradford needed was a big and fast receiver. That’s why Greg Jennings was rumored to be a free agent target this offseason and even Terrell Owens was rumored to be an option in 2011... Read more

St. Louis Rams: Who will win the backfield in 2013?

For the last eight seasons, the St. Louis Rams and most NFL fans knew who owned the starting running back job. With Steven Jackson’s departure come lots of questions with few answers, but let’s see what those answers are in 2013.
The training camp battle for the Rams’ running back position will consist of the proven backup (Daryl Richardson), the frustrated draft choice (Isaiah Pead) and the hungry rookie (Zac Stacey)... Read more

Titus Young takes a snooze at an AT&T store

Titus Young the former NFL Wide Receiver who was arrested twice in one day (once for DUI and then hours later trying to steal his own car from police impound lot) also likes to take naps in AT&T stores. Deadspin has the story from a very annoyed AT&T employee. Living in The Detroit suburbs and working for AT&T I would regularly get Lions players in my store. One of particular note was Titus Young. One night he came up after we had closed and started banging on the door. We couldn’t unlock the doors because of policy, but he proceeded to hold up his driver’s license to the window and say, “Do you know who I am?? I’m Titus Young”. We ignored him. The next day he came back during business hours and started yelling that we wouldn’t let him in. He also demanded everything in the store should have been given to him for free. He had his sister with him who seemed like his assistant at the time. She was extremely professional and nice, almost like a parent trying to keep their child in line. A

Young arrested twice in 15 hours

via The Oakland Press Titus Young, the troubled former Detroit Lions wide receiver, was arrested twice Sunday within 15 hours by the Moreno Valley Police Department in southern California. According to The Oakland Press (Rochester, MI) Young was stopped at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday after making an illegal left turn in front of a patrol car. Young was stopped and arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center and later issued a citation and released from custody. Hours later, at 2:22 p.m. that day, officers responded to a tow company yard where a man was seen jumping over the fence. It was Young looking for his black Mustang. He was arrested for burglary after the police determined he was trying to take his own vehicle. He was booked again at the same detention center. Young was waived by the Detroit Lions on February 4th and picked up on waivers a few days later by the St. Louis Rams. Within days of the claim, the Rams rel...
