Greg Schiano: “We have a starting quarterback.”

Since the Bucs drafted North Carolina State quarterback Mike Glennon, several have attempted to label the quarterback competition between he and Josh Freeman as a controversy. Speaking to the National Football Post, head coach Greg Schiano emphasized that the team already has a starting quarterback. Look, I’m not against that (Glennon winning the starting job). We have a starting quarterback. It’s not like we’re looking to find a starter. But competition is competition. Mike Glennon is a fierce competitor. I knew that when he was coming out of high school. Now being able to work with him a little, you can see it on the practice field. Schiano does a great job of addressing both quarterbacks here — reiterating that the starter is Josh Freeman and making it clear that Glennon was drafted to compete. The Bucs second year head coach has been talking about competition at the position since the end of last season. Now they have it. But by Schiano saying that they are not looking for a sta...

Buccaneers defense an embarrassment, can they change?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense led by Lavonte David, Mason Foster and Ronde Barber were horrific in 2012.
Ranking 29th in the league in sacks and dead last in passing yards allowed, they were an embarrassment, or were they?

The Buccaneers finished number one against the run allowing only 1,320 yards on the ground and only 3.5 yards per carry. Opposing teams averaged only 82.5 yards per carry which is a ginormous difference between the worst team in the league, 147.6 by the New Orleans Saints... Read more

Rookie backup QB Mike Glennon aims for the driver's seat

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie QB Mike Glennon has big plans for himself in the NFL. Sure, he's coming into the league as a second-stringer, but if he has his way, he'll soon be running the show.

“I just want to be a good teammate,” Glennon said on SiriusXM NFL Radio, via JoeBucsFan.com.

“I’m going to be a good teammate to all the guys, to the quarterbacks, to the line, to everybody. And earn the respect that way and kinda take everything in and listen to what they have to say. But at the same time, I don’t know if taking a backseat would be the right term because I’m a competitor and I’m going to do whatever I can to compete. So at the same time, though, I understand I’m a rookie and it’s a process, and I’m just going to worry about getting better each and every day and let things play out that way.”

It's a good mindset to have, and that's what a team should want in a backup quarterback. Someone who can at least be ready to go in case of an emergency. Or

Freeman says relationship with Schiano is great

Many believe that there is some kind of a discord between Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman and head coach Greg Schiano. Back in early March, Freeman’s agent Erik Burkhardt told TheBayCave.com that the Bucs are huge believers in his client and shot down the speculation of there being a disconnect between the team and Freeman. Today, as a guest on “The Sports Page” with Rick Stroud and Tom Jones on 620WDAE/95.3FM, Freeman may have also shot down any rumors of a rift between he and the coach. (Full interview posted at the end.) I spent quite a bit of time in coach Schiano’s office, hung with him around the facility, just getting to know him better talking about aspirations, what we’re trying to do with this team and the direction. I feel that my relationship with coach Schiano is probably best out of any coach. I’ve gotten to know him extremely well. When reports first surfaced about the possible disconnect, it was only a matter of time that the national media would pick up on it and turn...

Bucs already hinting at a change at QB

The feeling that Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano is not enamored with Josh Freeman as his starting quarterback appeared to have spread to the front office when the Bucs spent their third-round pick on Mike Glennon out of NC State. Not only did the Bucs have Glennon rated as the best QB in last month’s NFL Draft, but they appear ready to fast track him to the starting role if we are reading into the comments of GM Mark Dominik correctly. Dominik, speaking on a recent NFL.com podcast via JoeBucsFan, had some very interesting things to say about their new rookie QB that may concern Freeman and his job security: “We’re going to put a lot of pressure on [Glennon] and see a lot of reps from him in the preseason. He’s got to play,” Dominik said. “We may not see as much of Dan Orlovsky or even of Josh Freeman somewhat in the preseason as much as you’re going to see Glennon … “We’re excited about just the little bit we saw from him [during rookie minicamp] in terms of mentally w...

Ronde Barber: Innovator, Revolutionary, Hall of Famer?

Ronde Barber will no longer run the flag out for Tampa. (Credit)

Last week, in the course of 48 hours, both football worlds of the Glazer family were rocked upside down with the retirements of the people that most embody the teams they own.

Admittedly, to say they were turned upside down would be an exaggeration, with hindsight seeming to suggest both decisions had been lined up for some time. Although I'm sure the Glazers, owners of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Manchester United, would have preferred not to be twisting and turning themselves over both sides of the Atlantic with the public announcements happening simultaneously.

Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement will have an immediate fundamental impact on both Manchester United and the landscape of English and World football. Meanwhile, Ronde Barber's decision to call it 16 and out in Tampa leaves a huge emotional hole at One Buc Place and has people asking:

"Is he Hall of Fame bound?"

The stats are there, a...

Josh Freeman Supporters Should Be Worried

If I am Josh Freeman, I am not so comfortable right now. Not only does he have a coach (Greg Schiano) not sold on his abilities, the Buccaneers went out and drafted Mike Glennon early in the third round. Of course the Bucs said all the right things, and on April 29th, head coach Greg Schiano said Glennon will not be viewed as immediate competition. I guess the word catching my eye here is “immediate”. That can mean so many things. Like I’m immediately speculating that the Bucs start Glennon sooner rather than later. Now that’s immediate, right?
He’s got to play. We may not see as much of Dan Orlovsky or even of Josh Freeman somewhat in the preseason as much as you’re going to see Glennon.

A further development happened yesterday after the Bucs GM, Mark Dominik said, “We’re going to put a lot of pressure on (Glennon) and see a lot of reps from him in the preseason. He’s got to play. We may not see as much of Dan Orlovsky or even of Josh Freeman somewhat in the preseason as much as y...

Bucs sign draft pick DT Akeem Spence

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced today that they have signed 2013 NFL Draft pick defensive tackle Akeem Spence to a four-year contract. Spence (6-1, 307) was selected in the fourth round (100th overall) out of the University of Illinois. He started all 38 games he played for the Fighting Illini, totaling 186 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 26 quarterback pressures in only three years. Spence was a member of the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy watch lists as a junior, while also earning second-team All-Big Ten honors from Phil Steele. Spence was selected first-team All-Big Ten by The NFL Draft Report after his sophomore season and earned Freshman All-American honors from College Football News, the FWAA, Phil Steele and Rivals.com. A native of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Spence attended Fort Walton Beach High, where, in addition to his football prowess, he was a state weight-lifting champion.
League investigation still pending in Bowers incident

Over a month ago, Da’Quan Bowers avoided jail time on gun charges stemming from the February 18 incident at LaGurdia Airport. After much speculation from fans and several reports on whether Bowers will face a suspension from the league, TheBayCave.com has learned today that the investigation is still pending on whether or not the Buccaneers’ defensive end will be suspended, per NFL spokesman. After letting defensive end Michael Bennett go and test the free agent market, Buccaneers’ general manager Mark Dominik let it be known that they are confident with Da’Quan Bowers starting full-time opposite the line from Adrian Clayborn. At the time of Dominik’s comments, Bowers was just four days into the uncertainty of any jail time. The league has had the Bowers case since day one of the incident. Since being exonerated on April 11, the league has stated they would immediately begin reviewing all facts from the case. Many suspect that he did nothing wrong to constitute a suspension. But eve...

Darrelle Revis to miss Bucs OTAs

The Bucs are on record saying they are comfortable with where Darrelle Revis is in his recovery from knee surgery seven months ago. But should there be a concern that Revis will not be on the field next week for the start of OTAs? During his introductory press conference, general manager Mark Dominik stated the team was confident in Revis’ progress or else they would not have moved forward with the deal to acquire the All-Pro cornerback. However, the team also has stated they would be cautious with his return so the original projected return-to-the-field date for Revis is training camp — as it was when he was still a member of the Jets. Sports Talk Florida’s Jenna Laine also confirms that her sources have told her multiple times that the Bucs are fine with Revis and his progression. So to answer anyone’s concerns about Darrelle Revis not being on the field until training camp, don’t worry about it. In fact, the Bucs are wise to take a cautious approach. This is not a spra...

Buccaneers Bring Their Big Guy Into the Fold

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed their fourth-round (No. 126 overall) pick from the 2013 NFL Draft in defensive end William Gholston to a four-year deal on Tuesday. Gholston had some solid numbers at Michigan State, registering a total of 142 tackles with 13 passes defensed, 10 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 30 tackles for loss—10th most in the institution’s history. Photo Credit: TampaBayBuccaneers.com He left Michigan State after his junior year after earning second-team All-Big Ten honors for both his sophomore and junior seasons, and was a quarterfinalist for the Lombardi Award (lineman of the year). For his size (6-6, 281 pounds), the former Spartan is extremely versatile. Last season, Gholston, the cousin of free agent Vernon Gholston, led all FBS defensive linemen with 10 passes defensed and set a school record for passes defensed by any player at his position.
Glennon will replace Freeman this season

Seems like people are still piling on the idea of Josh Freeman losing the starting role this season to rookie quarterback Mike Glennon. According to Gil Alcaraz IV of RantSports.com, Glennon will eventually replace Freeman this season. While it’s still a mystery as to when it’ll happen, rookie Mike Glennon will be the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at some point this season. Why, you ask? Well because Josh Freeman is the current starter, and he will slip up at some point this upcoming season. When that time comes, Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano won’t hesitate to bench the 2009 first-round pick who has yet to live up to his billing. It’s fair to say that Freeman is replaceable. However, replacing him with someone that was drafted to act as a backup plan and someone that is of no competition makes no sense to do so in 2013. Now that’s not to say the change can not come down the road, but the Glennon pick was not to immediately replace Freeman this year. The Bucc...

Barber on McCoy leading: He can “handle it”

Ronde Barber was not a vocal leader outsiders saw him as but players knew the type of leader he was around them. Now with him retired, someone else on the defensive side of the ball has to assume that role. And that player is none other than Gerald McCoy. Barber spoke highly of the 2010 first rounder via the Tampa Tribune. It’s very clearly Gerald McCoy. Not only because he’s one of the best players on the team, but because he has the personality to handle it. A lot of people don’t give Gerald credit for the year he had last year, but the people that played against him did. And when you talk to a guy like John Lynch, who did a lot of games (as a Fox TV analyst), he’ll tell you. He’s talking to the other coaches all the time and asking them, ‘What is it with this (Bucs) team that you know you have to stop to beat them?’ And, without fail, they all said, ‘That freaking No.93 is heck to deal with.’ So, yeah, he’s the guy. Many saw McCoy slowly growing into that role on separate occasi...

Buccaneers Let Ronde Barber Walk Away From NFL On Own Terms

Walking away from the NFL on a player’s own terms doesn’t happen often. Due to free agency and the salary cap structure of today’s NFL, it’s nearly impossible for a player to earn the loyalty of an organization and garner the respect of a franchise to allow an employee to make the ultimate decision, instead of giving them an optimum. Ronde Barber officially walked away from the game he loves Thursday afternoon, and the Bucs gave the Super Bowl XXXVII champion the stage at his terms after 16 seasons in Tampa Bay. “Rondé is synonymous with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, establishing himself as one of our franchise’s iconic players over a 16-year, Hall of Fame-worthy career,” said Buccaneers’ co-chairman Joel Glazer. “When anyone thinks of Rondé, they think of a true professional and leader. He approached every day the same, giving everything he had to make himself and his teammates the best they could be. We will miss him.” Photo Credit: Buccaneers.com Miss Barber? Not hardly.
Former general manager weighs in on Bucs draft

Experts from across the country have weighed in on the Bucs draft selections but rarely do you see someone who held a front office position break down draft picks team by team. That is exactly what former Denver Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist has done as he chimes in on the selections (and non-selections) the Bucs made. The one that many agree the Bucs did good by selecting him in the second round was cornerback Jonathan Banks. Sundquist feels differently about him. The guy doesn’t pass my eye test… He looks really slow. That won’t bode well in a pass happy division. That being said, with the addition of Darrelle Revis and Dashon Goldson, it’s not like Banks will have a major role the next couple years. On the flip side, he likes quarterback Mike Glennon. Glennon has most of the characteristics you want in a successful QB. (outlined here) So why wouldn’t you want a guy like that on your team? I don’t root for the Bucs, but I know how maddening Josh Freeman can be. Glenn...
