Bucs should make play for Favre

According to several online reports, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets have entered the bidding war for Brett Favre.

Good - for the Bucs, that is. (Well, the Jets too given their current QB situation. But mainly the Bucs.)

In his first season in Tampa, Jeff Garcia proved to be a solid option last year because he didn't make mistakes. Coupled with error-free play from their quarterback position, the Bucs relied on their defense, were able to win the NFC South and made the postseason (where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl Champion New York Giants).

True, the defense is another year older (Ronde Barber is 33 and Derrick Brooks is 35), but coordinator Monte Kiffin is one of the best in the league at getting the most out of his players. Tampa also has a nice mix of youth and veteran experience on that side of the ball and second year players Tanard Jackson and Gaines Adams should only continue to improve.

But back to Favre.

Possible Favre Trade Ramifications

Chris Mortensen says the Green Bay Packers have given Brett Favre permission to talk to the New York Jets about a trade. A Packers source says both the Jets and Buccaneers have expressed interest in Favre. The quarterback himself is reportedly set to join Packers training camp, possibly as a way of forcing the team's hand.
It appears a Favre trade is inevitable. Obviously, the Vikings will not be his destination. However, were Favre to be traded to either the Jets or Bucs, it would set up interesting scenarios that could impact the Vikings' QB situation. Either of those teams would, in the event of a Favre acquisition, be left with a surplus of quarterbacks (the Bucs already have one actually - theirs' would just get worse), meaning someone would have to get cut. The Jets would almost certainly jettison Chad Pennington - a quarterback who's been linked to the Vikings in the past. And what about Tampa Bay? They're sure to get rid of Chris Simms…but if Favre were added to the mix, what would they do with Jeff Garcia? Keep him around as a back-up? How would that sit with him? Might the Bucs be compelled to trade or release him?
The Vikings aren't getting Favre…but a Favre trade could still wind up netting the Vikes a new, veteran quarterback.

ESPN: Jets Get Permission to Speak to Favre

Brett Favre has told the Packers that he does not want to talk about going to another team, but it appears apparent that he will have to play in another uniform in 2008 if he wants to take the field. The two teams that reportedly want to talk to Favre the most are the New York Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Chris Mortensen of ESPN says that the Jets have been given permission to talk to Favre, while it's not known if the Bucs have been given the same permission.
Favre spoke to Packers GM Ted Thompson on Thursday, and told him that he is planning on being at Packers training camp over the weekend. He will have to officially apply for reinstatement before he shows up at the camp, and to date he has yet to do that, meaning he may not stroll in till Monday or Tuesday. The Packers will look for a trading partner for Brett, but the other team they make a deal with will have to have already spoke to Favre to make sure he wants to play for them.
The Vikings, along with Tampa Bay, the Bears and Jets have appeared from day one to be the front runners for the QB, and there was also some thoughts to the Panthers being in the mix as well.

Things Coming Full Circle?

Are things coming full circle for Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre? It appears so with the report on ESPN.com from Chris Mortensen that the New York Jets have received permission to talk to Favre. So I say this:
Trade Favre. To the Jets.
It works out perfectly. The Jets need a quarterback. Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens have not been getting the job done. Clemens has shown flashes of brilliance, but he is not ready to take over an NFL team now. Maybe in a few years. After Favre retires. New York is not an NFC team. They have the talent to win. They also have to the pieces to fail miserably and expose Favre as being extremely selfish. I have no idea what the Jets have to offer as compensation and what not, but I say go for it. Ted Thompson can finally move on to his true love, Aaron Rodgers, and Rodgers can finally PLAY. It makes the team younger and gives the team a bigger window of opportunity.
I feel like the Jets are definitely the right fit for Favre. He isn't going to a team where there are 50,484,382 other quarterbacks, otherwise known as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Plus, he will still be wearing green. For those idiots who don't know, Favre was supposed to be a Jet, but the Atlanta Falcons intervened.
But yeah, Favre as a Jet. It just feels right to me.

The Weekly Burn: Brett Favre, Vigo the Carpathian, and NFL Primetime

The Buccaneers are looking into acquiring Brett Favre, and this makes perfect sense. Like Arizona for Emmitt Smith and the Los Angeles Rams for Joe Namath, Tampa Bay is the ideal place for Favre's career to die. Now, if only the Bucs would use the throwbacks once or twice this season to make things look [...]

Bucs Report To Training Camp

The Buccaneers report to training camp today in Disney. The first practice is scheduled for tomorrow morning. Quarterback Jeff Garcia has been excused from the first two days of camp to attend a junior college reunion. Defensive end Greg White may not show up because he's upset about his contract. White recorded 8 sacks and seven forced fumbles last season. He's an exclusive-rights free agent meaning the Bucs are only team that can negotiate with him. The team offered him the required tender of 370-thousand dollars.

Second-round strategy: Draft a RB or WR?

Should owners draft a wide receiver or a running back in the second round? John Juhasz analyzes the scenarios.

I looked at both sides of the Tom Brady vs. a running back debate for the first round of a draft, and now I'll focus my attention on what to do in the next round.

As I mentioned before, it's crucial you spend at least one of your first two picks on a running back. Yes, I realize all 32 NFL teams have "starters" you can choose from and two rounds of a standard draft only equals 24 picks. But more and more teams are beginning to utilize the two-back system without a clear-cut No. 1 back. If you wait around too long, you'll basically end up starting two half-RB1s at best every week. Lots of luck if you find yourself in that situation.

If you didn't select a running back, then I'll assume you addressed your quarterback slot by choosing Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or Tony Romo since picking anyone else in the first round wouldn't make any sense. The good news is there are still plenty of teams who have a featured back that gets the lion's share of carries (and fantasy production). Let's find out where they are:

NFC South Offensive Lines: Looking For A Few Good Linemen

This could be the weakest division of linemen in the conference. With all four teams ranking in the second half of the conference, three in the lower third, there is much work to be done. But with strong offensive coaching from Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay and Sean Payton in New Orleans there is hope these units can produce. See where we rank them.
