Boston College Coach Jerry York Suffers Detached Retina, Will Miss Remainder of Hockey East Quarterfinals

Boston College will take the ice against Vermont on Saturday without its head coach.
Eagles coach Jerry York will miss the remainder of the Hockey East quarterfinal series after suffering a detached retina in his right eye Saturday morning, according to the school. York is scheduled to undergo eye surgery in Boston on Monday.
BC defeated the Catamounts 4-2 in Game 1 of the best-of-3 series Friday night and will look to clinch a spot in next weekend’s conference semifinals with a victory on Saturday. A loss would result in a winner-take-all Game 3 at Conte Forum the following afternoon.
It is not yet known whether York would be able to return to the bench if his team advances to the Garden rounds. Associate coaches Mike Cavanaugh and Greg Brown will lead the team in his absence.

BC Coach Jerry York to Miss Important Weekend Series With UNH After Undergoing Eye Surgery

It’s been a busy season for Boston College hockey head coach Jerry York, and it’s only January. The latest development, however, will keep the all-time leader in wins away from the Eagles bench for a crucial weekend series with New Hampshire.
The longtime BC head coach underwent outpatient eye surgery on Thursday to remove a detached retina. The university says York is resting comfortably after the procedure which was done by Dr. Jeffrey Heier at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston.
While York seems to be doing well, the surgery will keep out of this weekend’s series with No. 4 UNH. This two-game series could prove to be crucial as just two points separate No. 3 BC and UNH in the Hockey East standings.
The Eagles will be led by assistant coaches Mike Cavanaugh and Greg Brown in York’s absence.
Friday night’s game at Boston College is slated for a 7 p.m. puck drop and can be seen live on NESN.

North Texas falls to No. 3 LSU, 41-14

For North Texas coach Dan McCarney, part of turning a program around is refusing to accept a lopsided loss against a national title contender like LSU.

So even after the Mean Green played well enough to cause LSU fans to briefly boo their own offense, McCarney wasn't passing around many compliments after a 41-14 loss to the third-ranked Tigers on Saturday night.

''I just thought we'd hang in there better,'' McCarney said. ''It's not a good job 41-14. It's inexcusable. ... If it eats you up inside, then we have a chance to move forward and get better.''

Derek Thompson completed only 8 of 21 passes, but two passes were scoring strikes of 80 and 15 yards to Brelan Chancellor. Thompson finished with 143 yards passing, threw an interception, but did not take a sack.

''We have things build off of but we're still disappointed that we didn't come out and play like we're supposed to,'' Chancellor said. ''We had too many missed oppo

Garrett looks to Mars for feedback

OXNARD, Calif. In a former life that I choose not to discuss too often, I covered the entire NFC East for a fledgling web site based in Bristol, Conn. In my travels, the one thing that always grabbed my attention was how much more physical the Philadelphia Eagles were in training camp than the Cowboys.

Head coach Andy Reid didn't mind seeing big hits in training camp because he felt like it helped his teams form an identity. As we all know, former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips had a different approach. You rarely saw players go to the ground on tackles, and if it happened, a defensive player would be chastised. In Wade's defense, he's now coaching one of the best defenses in the NFL with the Texans.

But we've been poking fun at the Cowboys' finesse approach for several years. And I can't say that Bill Parcells ran the toughest camps around.

The good news is that Jason Garrett is presiding over one of the most physical training camps in years. And that's pretty remarkable g

North Texas RB Lance Dunbar is a sleeper NFL talent

Typically, when you think of football at the University of North Texas, you think of a program that struggles consistently in spite of it’s location and access to some of the top talent in the state of Texas–if not the country– in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex.
Every now and then, however, the Mean Green produce a player with the ability to play in the National Football League.
A few years ago, it was running back Patrick Cobbs.
This season, it’s running back Lance Dunbar, who with 313 yards rushing yesterday against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders set a single-game rushing record at UNT, and also became the leading rusher in school history.
Finishing his career with 4,224 yards, Dunbar became the sixth running back in NFL history to rush for over 4,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving.
While somewhat under-sized by NFL standards at 5’9″ and 203 pounds, the Haltom City, Texas product has great strength and burst into the second-level. A nice comparison back is Michael Turner or

North Texas 59, Middle Tennessee 7

Lance Dunbar became the all-time leading rusher and set a single-game rushing record at North Texas with 313 yards as the Mean Green closed out their season with a 59-7 victory over Middle Tennessee.

Dunbar, a senior, finished with 4,224 yards to surpass Patrick Cobbs (4,050 yards from 2001-2005). He had rushing touchdowns of 1, 26, 5 and 14 yards on Saturday while carrying the ball 40 times, and also became the sixth player in NCAA history to have 4,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving.

The 313 yards is the most rushing yards by an NCAA player this year, and breaks the North Texas single-season mark of 291 set by Jamario Thomas against Colorado in 2004.

North Texas (5-7, 4-4 Sun Belt) rushed for a school record-tying 464 yards against Middle Tennessee (2-10, 1-7) and finished with its best record and most wins since 2004.

North Texas 38, Troy 33

Derek Thompson threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns and North Texas defeated Troy 38-33 on Saturday.

Down three points early in the fourth quarter, Thompson threw a 46-yard touchdown to Chris Bynes. The Mean Green then recovered a Corey Robinson fumble at the 6-yard line, and James Hamilton's 6-yard touchdown run put them up 38-27.

Hamilton, who took over after Lance Dunbar left the game with a knee injury, ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

Thompson also ran for a 15-yard touchdown.

Troy's Robinson threw for 267 yards and four touchdowns, but lost a fumble and threw an interception. The Trojans (2-7, 1-4 Sun Belt Conference) have now lost five straight, and after winning or sharing the Sun Belt title for five straight years won't go to a bowl.

North Texas (4-6, 3-3) kept postseason hopes alive in coach Dan McCarney's first year.
