Joey Votto actually could give 110%

If Joey Votto puts his mind to it, he can accomplish anything. One of my minor pet peeves is when people make a comment about devoting more than 100% to a certain task. Technically, that’s impossible. Sure, I understand what the person means: they’re devoting all of themselves to whatever it is they’re talking about.
A person has 100% to give to something at any given moment. Anything more than that is not something that a person is capable of.
Except for maybe Joey Votto. The more I read about him and his approach to the game of baseball, the more I think he could do anything he set his mind to, even breaking the laws of mathematics. I mean, just look at one of the finer points of Pete Rose’s that he’s taken to heart.
“Early in my career, Pete kept an eye on me,” Votto said, “and the one piece of advice he gave me was, ‘When you get the second hit, get the third hit. And when you get the third hit, get the fourth hit. And when you get the fourth hit, get the fifth hit.’ That really ...

Cincinnati Bearcats baseball team rocks postgame interviews

College baseball teams sure seem to have fun, and the Cincinnati Bearcats are a good example.

UC finished the regular season 24-32 and placed ninth in the Big East with a 6-18 mark, failing to qualify for the conference tournament. ... But that didn't deter the Bearcats from having a jolly good time.

There was jousting.

There was addressing of royalty.

There was swimming.

The backstroke, too.

There was exploring.

And to top it off, there was a capture.

By the way, the UC Bearcats play their home games at Marge Schott Stadium. ... We wonder if the Cincinnati Reds late owner would approve.

Cincinnati Reds Sign RHP Trevor Bell To Minor League Deal

Free agent right-handed pitcher Trevor Bell and the Cincinnati Reds have come to terms on a minor league contract that will see him pitch for their Triple-A Louisville farm club. He was roughed up brutally in 2012 so there is no guarantee of anything other than providing organizational depth at the minor league level with this signing.

Reds' Sean Marshall unavailable with shoulder discomfort

Cincinnati Reds left-handed reliever Sean Marshall wasn't available last night against the New York Mets after he experienced discomfort in his throwing shoulder, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.

The Reds ran into a situation where Marshall would have usually been called upon, as the team's right-handed starter, Mat Latos, reached 100 pitches and was set to face left-handed batter Daniel Murphy. After surrendering a RBI single to Murphy, Latos then allowed the tying run to score on a hit from another lefty, Rick Ankiel.

Following the game, manager Dusty Baker told reporters that he would have generally used Marshall in that situation. However, the left-hander wasn't available after his arm didn't respond well to pregame throwing. For his part, Marshall believes he's dealing with inflammation.

"We were kind of erring on the side of caution. I told
them I was a little bit sore," Marshall said after the Reds' 7-4 win.

Reds rumors: Shin-Soo Choo not considering extension

Extensions are all the rage in today's MLB. Young players and veterans alike are signing or mulling new contracts that would keep them with their current clubs for years to come. Cincinnati Reds outfielder Shin-Soo Choo doesn't appear to have gotten caught up in this fad, as he told Tyler Kepner of The New York Times that all he's thinking about at this point is the next pitch.

“A lot of people ask me: ‘Do you want to stay in Cincinnati?
What do you want?’ ” Choo said. “That’s too far away. We’re not at the end
of the season; we’re not at the end of the first half yet. I know why I’m here.
Cincinnati gave up two good players, and they want to win a World Series.
That’s what I want, too. I’ve never played in the playoffs. I have a good
opportunity to play with a good team.”

Choo was acquired by the Reds over the offseason from the Arizona Cleveland Indians in the three-team trade that also involved Trevor Bauer, Didi Gregorius, and Drew Stubbs. Cincinnati nee

Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman Honorary FatMan of the Day

For many being an honorary fat man may not mean much (or anything good), but here at FatManWriting I think it comes as no surprise that we tend to give some respect and love to those of larger girth.

Now girth--or fatness--can be a metaphorical as well as physical thing. Sometimes a person can have the heart of a FatMan while not actually being large enough that you have skinny people forced to orbit you due to your gravitational pull.

Like Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman.

So why is Aroldis the honorary FatMan of the Day? Well, it's a great little story...

On Sunday when the Reds were playing the Phillies they had a 2-1 heading into the 9th inning. Time for Aroldis Chapman to earn his paycheck and close this one out!

Instead he gives up two solo home runs and the Reds lose 3-2.
Now what's important is the supposed reason why he gave a pair of dingers and blew the save. According to Phillies Spanish-language broadcaster Rickie Ricardo its because he was full after e

Video: Mat Latos fields questions from fans on MLB Network

Your browser does not support iframes.

As much as fans love watching their favorite players perform on the diamond, they love it even more when they can actually hear from them.

Well, this is precisely what fans got to do with Mat Latos recently, as the big right-hander appeared on MLB Network's "Chatting Cage" to field questions from fans.

Latos addresses how he approaches hitters at Great American Ball Park, who he thinks the funniest guy on the team is, how he adjusted to being the team's ace in Johnny Cueto's absence, and more.

Check it out. It's bascially a really good extended interview.

Joey Votto Powers His Way to NL Player of the Week

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto was given the honor of National League Player of the Week on Monday, covering games from the week of May 13 through May 19.
Over the course of the past week, Votto boasted a major league best batting average of .583, while leading the NL with a .655 on-base percentage and a .917 slugging percentage that was good enough for second in the NL.
Votto would also slug two home runs and drive in five runs, collecting 14 hits that were included in five multi-hit games.
The highlight of Votto’s week was in a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, in which he reached base safely in each of his six plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
Votto extended his hitting streak to nine games on Monday night in a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets and is amongst the NL leaders in hitting with a .353 batting average, while slugging 6 home runs with 20 RBI.

A Little League icon, Todd Frazier will soon rebound and help the Cincinnati Reds

Reds third baseman Todd Frazier continued to struggle mightily in Cincinnati’s 4-3 victory over the Mets in New York on Monday night. Named the preeminent National League rookie by players in 2012, the 27-year-old Frazier went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts against New York. Batting a hideous .224 with six homers and 27 RBI, the New Jersey Little League icon has whiffed 44 times in 43 games this spring. Despite Frazier’s failures at the plate, Cincinnati is 27-18 and still seriously contending in the central division.
Reds' Chapman done in by pastries?

Reds closer Aroldis Chapman threw 12 pitches against the Marlins last Thursday. Ten were 100 miles per hour or higher; the slowest was 98.

Chapman threw 14 pitches Sunday in Philadelphia. None registered 100 mph, according to MLB.com game data. And all but four of them were 97 or below.

Chapman blew save opportunities in both games. Sunday, he issued a leadoff walk to Delmon Young (who is famous for his impatience at the plate) and allowed consecutive home runs to an unlikely duo - Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis.

What could explain the drop in velocity and effectiveness, despite two days of rest?

Maybe it was something he ate.

Rickie Ricardo, a Spanish-language broadcaster for the Phillies, told Philadelphia's Sportsradio 94WIP that many Cuban players ask him during the season to pick up a popular Cuban pastry from a bakery near his home in Union City, N.J. Chapman - now in his fourth major league season after defecting from Cuba - asked Ricardo for two 50-count boxes after Friday's game, Ricardo s

Aroldis Chapman Blew Save Because He Ate 18 Cuban Pastries Before Game, Says Broadcaster

Aroldis Chapman is easily one of the most untouchable closers in baseball. With 242 strikeouts in just 154 innings pitched, the left-hander is a dominant force, having yielded only five home runs during his career.
On Sunday, however, Chapman was less than his typical self, and it turns out his sweet tooth may be to blame.
According to CBS Philadelphia, Phillies Spanish-language broadcaster Rickie Ricardo (we checked, and, yes, that is his real name) brought Chapman two boxes of 50 of a specific Cuban pastry. The treat is filled with cream cheese and guava, and Ricardo likens adulation of them — which he gets at an ethnic foods store near his home — to Krispy Kreme donuts here in America.
However, instead of going ahead with restraint, Chapman immediately downed 18 of them right before the game. Later in the day, Chapman gave up back-to-back home runs Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis, giving the Phillies a 3-2 win over Cincinnati, and prompting Ricardo to make the connection.

In brief: the return of Johnny Cueto

Last game
The Reds’ offense was anemic yesterday, but it looked like their 2 runs would be enough until suddenly it wasn’t.
Leading 2-0 going into the bottom of the eighth, Jonathan Broxton appeared to get shaken up by a rough defensive play that put a guy on first, and so promptly walked the next batter. Sean Marshall was the one to actually allow the inherited run to score, but even that didn’t seem so bad. After all, it would be Chapman in the ninth.
Aroldis Chapman did come in in the ninth, but his recent struggled continued. He walked the first batter and then gave up back-to-back home runs to Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis to blow the save and then the game. Coming into the month of May, Chapman’s ERA was 0.68. 20 days and 6 IP later, it’s 3.32.
The 2-3 loss to the Phillies brings the Reds’ record to 26-18. Sounds pretty good, but it’s only good enough to tie with the Pirates for second. Tough division this year.

Pastries to blame for blown save?

The Phillies beat the Reds 3-2 on Sunday in walkoff fashion after Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis hit solo homers off of Cincinnati flamethrowing closer Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning. The Cuban lefty's fastball velocity was slightly down (but not enough for people to get worried about an injury) during the 14-pitch outing and Phililes Spanish broadcaster Rickie Ricardo thinks he knows why...Cuban pastries. Seriously. This anecdote from CBS Philly has blown my mind. “Aroldis Chapman, since he arrived in the U.S. and on a major league team, he has become a friend of mine, and as I do for many Cuban players they always ask me—there is a little Cuban bakery up near where I live in the Cuban strong hold of Union City, New Jersey,” Ricardo told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show on Monday. “They cook this little Cuban pastry, which is a flaky-crust pasty with cream cheese and guava and it’s baked, and it’s absolutely delicious.
Reds surge toward top in new MLB power rankings

Cincinnati is the biggest winner in ESPN's newly released MLB Power Rankings.

Apparently, the pollsters were impressed with the six-game winning streak the Reds strung together in the past week. That streak came to an end in Philadelphia over the weekend, though, as the Reds dropped two of three from the feisty Phillies.

Nonetheless, Dusty Baker's bunch still landed at spot No. 3 this week in the rankings. That is up seven spots from the previous week, which is the highest jump for any team in baseball. Baltimore experienced the worst drop, falling nine spots from No. 4 to No. 13.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals fell off the top perch and down to No. 2.
The voting panel was comprised of Tim Kurkjian, David Schoenfield, and Jayson Stark. However, former Red and Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin also voiced his opinion on air Monday, and he didn't think so highly of his former team.

Larkin excluded Cincy from his top five, choosing to...

Can Joey Votto return to MVP form?

Is Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto steadily working his way back into his 2012 MVP form?
Batting .349, the left-handed hitter has hit in eight straight games.
This includes a game on Saturday against the hosting Phillies where he successfully reached base six times.
Votto was 4-for-4 with two singles, a double, and a two run homer in the top of the ninth to cap things off.

Cingrani optioned to Louisville

Tony Cingrani will now have to mow down AAAers.
Tony Cingrani did a most admirable job filling in for Johnny Cueto while our ace was on the DL. In 6 starts he went 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA. Among the starting pitchers, that ERA was bested only by Mat Latos (who had an unholy April) and the man whose spot he was taking. His 1.2 Ks per inning pitched led the squad.
Unfortunately for Cingrani, he’s 23, needs to work on his secondary pitches, and had a pretty rough outing against the Phillies just yesterday. So, with Cueto poised to take back his spot in the rotation, Cingrani was optioned to Louisville today.
In his place is not Cueto but rather Neftali Soto. Soto, who will wear #50 until Cueto’s spot in the rotation comes up again, is a corner infielder. He will be making his major-league debut with the team tonight. Mark says:
Soto is batting .269/.310/.388 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 33 games. He has played 18 games at first base but has been developing his skills as a third baseman...

Video: Watch Joey Votto go yard against Phillies

Your browser does not support iframes.

Cincinnati's six-game winning streak came to a halt Friday night as the Phillies handed the visitors a 5-3 defeat. Philly scored two in the bottom of the eighth to help push past the second-place Reds.

However, one guy Cincy certainly can't blame for the loss is Joey Votto, who notched two hits in the affair, including this solo home run in the top of the eighth to knot the score at three a piece. It marked the fifth of the year for the three-time All-Star.

Broadcaster Thom Brennaman called it the hardest ball Votto has hit all season long. Although it isn't always easy to agree with Thom, it's hard to argue against him on this one. That ball was smoked.

Joey Votto on Sports Illustrated’s Fortunate 50 list

Every year since 2004, Sports Illustrated has rounded up the annual income of athletes and ranked them. This year, the number one athlete is boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. And making his first appearance on the list is Cincinnati Red favorite Joey Votto.
Yes, coming in at number 45 with a total income of $19,250,000 is Votto.
The 2010 MVP and a perennial All-Star isn’t a national household name. But Votto, 29, is extremely popular in Reds country and last year Kroger markets unveiled VottO’s cereal in Cincinnati and Dayton.
Only $250,000 of that total is from endorsements, so there’s definitely room for improvement in the future.
As far as I can tell, Votto is the first Red to make an appearance on the list. The first few years of the list were never placed on the internet in full and have been lost forever, so I’m saying that’s good enough.
Congratulations, Joey! And congratulations to the Reds’ ownership. It’s really nice to see them committing to keeping their excellent home-grown t...

Brandon Phillips turns double play from knees

Your browser does not support iframes. Put your pencils down, folks. The award for the best defensive play of the 2013 Major League Baseball season belongs to Reds Gold Glove second basemen Brandon Phillips. The spectacle occurred Friday night in front of a soggy home crowd at Great American Ball Park. With the Reds clinging to a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning, Milwaukee Brewers slugger Ryan Braun stepped to the plate with two runners on and one out against Reds reliever Sam LeCure. After working the count full, Braun chopped a ball over the head of LeCure and toward the direction of second base. That is when Phillips turned the most magnificent double play fans are likely to see all year long. Watch as the sure-handed Phillips snares the grounder with his bare hand, tags second base with his knee, and then chucks an off-balance throw (from his knees) on to Joey Votto at first base to nip Braun and complete the twin killing. Let us not forget Votto for making a n...

Reds pitchers cost pizza place $100K

Free pizza has quickly become an expectation for Reds fans. Cincinnati has only played 15 home games this season, but seven of them have resulted in Reds pitchers striking out at least 11 hitters. What happens when Reds pitchers fan 11 hitters or more in a home game? Well, LaRosa's Pizzeria gives away free pizza to anyone who can present a ticket stub from the game. And the local restaurant chain doesn't just hand out slices, either. No, they give fans eight-inch pizzas with any four toppings worth nearly $7. So, how much has LaRosa's promotion cost them so far in 2013? How about more than $100,000. This is a lot of dough, folks. And this is not to mention the fact that Cincinnati's home attendance currently ranks 19th out of 30 teams (26,308). By comparison, the Los Angeles Dodgers currently lead the league in home attendance with 47,112, which would mean far more free pizza to give away on LaRosa's part if the Reds somehow managed to pack that many fans into ...
