Detroit Pistons Rumors: Maurice Cheeks Granted Second Interview; Will Team Wait for Brian Shaw?

Sometimes, second interviews are telling in a hiring process. Other times, they’re just examples of organizations doing their proper diligence in the midst of a very important front office decision.
In either case, the Detroit Pistons have apparently heard something they liked from current Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach Maurice Cheeks. After undergoing a previous interview, Cheeks was quickly called back for a second interview yesterday, adding another interesting wrinkle to the ever-evolving search for Detroit’s next basketball boss.
As the process has continued, Cheeks is the first known instance of a Pistons’ candidate receiving a call back. Last week, Brian Shaw’s name finally surfaced with regards to Detroit’s opening, but Shaw is in high demand, reportedly also a top choice for the Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers’ vacancies. How long will Joe Dumars be willing to wait to interview Shaw, who is currently embroiled in a playoff run with the Indiana Pacers? If

Detroit Pistons didn’t win lottery, but should get quality at position

Going into Tuesday’s NBA draft lottery with the seventh best odds, the Detroit Pistons found themselves leaving New York with the 8th overall selection in the 2013 NBA draft.
The last time the Pistons had the No. 8 pick it was in 2011 and they selected guard Brandon Knight out of Kentucky. With perimeter defending and scoring being a main issue for the Pistons during the 2012-2013 campaign, it seems as if the guard position will once again be at the top of their priority list when they select this year.
C.J. McCollum
Some of the names that could be available when the Pistons select are guards C.J. McCollum (Lehigh) and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (Georgia) as well as small forward Shabazz Muhhamad (UCLA). In my recent mock draft – Detroit Pistons edition – I had Detroit taking McCollum if they had the No. 8 selection, and if he’s available when they are on the clock I think it’s a no-brainer that the combo guard becomes the Pistons newest addition.
Stay tuned for my full 2013 NBA mock ...

Detroit Pistons: Dumars, Pistons have a huge summer ahead

Alright, I’m not sure why I keep going on these Detroit Pistons tangents in the midst of one of the best NBA playoffs in recent years, but I can’t stress enough how huge this summer is for the this organization.
With money at their disposal, a top 10 pick in the 2013 NBA draft and young talent that can be shopped around, the Pistons are in a great position to once again contend in the Eastern Conference. And while free agency is probably the biggest of the Pistons concerns going forward, whoever they select in the upcoming NBA draft could dictate their moves for the rest of the offseason.
A few weeks back I put together an article that showed who I believe the Pistons should pick in the draft, and since then, my mind hasn’t changed too much. While a shooting guard and small forward are the Pistons primary needs, if Michigan point guard Trey Burke is sitting there when the Pistons select I think he will be their choice.
Aside from his ties with Joe Dumars (Burke played briefly with D...

Pistons Haven't Identified Leading Candidate In Coaching Search

The Detroit Pistons do not have a leading candidate in their head coaching search, according to sources.
There is belief, however, that the Pistons will elevate the process at the NBA draft combine in Chicago.
Phil Jackson has agreed to help the organization in an advisory role and could have Brian Shaw at the top of his candidate list.

Drummond to work with The Dream

Detroit Pistons rookie Andre Drummond is the latest in the long line of big men to work with former Houston Rockets great Hakeem Olajuwon. Working with The Dream in the off season has become the new fad and has proved successful for some and not for others. For a young guy like Andre, who’s not even 20 yet, the tutoring could be monumental.
The Hall of Fame center, one of the game’s all-time great offensive players, is expected to work with the Pistons’ center-forward over the summer to help him with his offensive game, which is still in the infant stages.
Drummond has been at the practice facility recently. He took about a two-week break, according to Pistons.com, before getting back into the gym to work on his game.
“I’m really excited for next season,” Drummond said recently. (Detroit Free Press)
Drummond had a good rookie campaign finishing fourth in rookie of the year voting. He averaged 7.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game over 20:41 minutes. The most impressive thing is d...

Andre Drummond ready to go to work with ‘the Dream’ this summer

The Detroit Pistons are busy evaluating NBA Draft talent and trying to figure out who will be the coach next season, but appear to at least have the centerpiece of their team in 20-year-old center Andre Drummond. The organization was fortunate to see the center drop a year ago because teams feared he didn’t care enough to work hard in the NBA. Drummond, a raw rookie out of Connecticut, responded with an average of 7.9 PPG, 7.6 RPG and 1.6 BPG while only playing 20 minutes each night. The Pistons had a rocky start to their season as a team, but were playing solid basketball as Drummond saw his workload increased. January saw him averaging over 9 boards, and many believed he would make a second half season run at the Rookie of the Year award. But a back injury sidelined him, and the Pistons season went into a tailspin. Drummond returned for the final few weeks of the season, and a was allowed to start, responding with 11 and 8. Drummond is definitely a force defensively and along the ...

Detroit Pistons: What should they do in the 2013 NBA draft?

Between Stephen Curry making it rain on every defender that crosses his path, Carmelo Anthony shooting 10 percent from the field (clearly a joke… kind of), and Nate Robinson putting on for little men everywhere, I’ve had the opportunity to breakaway from the highly entertaining 2013 NBA playoffs and look into the upcoming 2013 NBA Draft which will be held on June 27 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
After finishing the season with a record of 29-53 and winning a coin flip against Washington Wizards, the Detroit Pistons will have the seventh best odds heading into the upcoming NBA lottery. The coach-less team will have 36 chances out of 1,000 to grab the No. 1 overall selection.
While the odds of the Pistons grabbing the first selection in the draft are very slim, there is still always a chance.
Last time the Pistons selected 7th overall it was in 2010 when they drafted center Greg Monroe out of Georgetown. Monroe is coming off of his best season as a pro in which he averaged...

Phil Jackson turns down Toronto, Joins Detroit as Consultant

A crushing blow for Raptor fans as Phil Jackson has decided not to join the Raptors as president. Instead the Zen master has become a consultant for the Detroit Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars.
In late April
“Sources told ESPN.com that the Raptors — now being run by former Los Angeles-based sports mogul Tim Leiweke — regarded the Seattle group that was trying to buy the Kings as the biggest threat to preventing Jackson from seriously considering their pitch.
But now that the Kings appear poised to stay in Sacramento instead of being sold to the consortium led by Jackson fan Chris Hansen, sources say that the Raptors will be pursuing Jackson aggressively this week, believing that they rank as Jackson’s most attractive current option for a new career in management now that he can reunite with Leiweke.”
If it makes our Raptor fans feel better, Jackson is a great coach, but it still would have taken at least three more years to make the Raptors a playoff threat wit...

Steve Smith doesn't see Phil Jackson's role with the Pistons as a natural fit

When Phil Jackson was hired as a consultant by the Detroit Pistons many figured that there was more to it than just being an unpaid consultant.

Some think it might be a ploy to undercut current Pistons president Joe Dumars and take over the front office role himself. The question I have is, why is Jackson helping the Pistons?

NBA TV analyst Steve Smith has the same thought going through his mind. Smith, like myself remembers Jackson being a mortal enemy of the Pistons while he coached Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
Smith says that Jackson's role with the Pistons doesn't look natural.

Remember when he said the Pistons were bad for basketball? Or when he disregarded them as champions after the Pistons beat down his Lakers in 2004. No, this isn't natural at all.

"His experience, because of the years he's been around the league, championship pedigree, all the rings and big games he's been apart of," Smith said. "(But) I'm still scratching my head, wh

Phil Jackson helping out the Pistons

It seems like any coaching vacancy that opens up these days is followed with the immediate thought that “hey, Phil Jackson might want to coach there.” The answer is always no, and Jackson has shown no signs of wanting to return to the bench, whether it be for a contender or the challenge of a young, undisciplined project. Jackson’s name has also been thrown around as a candidate for a few front office jobs. The Toronto Raptors are actively pursuing him to be their new team president, but Jackson has given no indication yet that he’s interested. However, Jackson is going to be doing some basketball-related work. The Detroit Pistons announced that Jackson is going to be serving the team in an advisory role to help them out in their search for a new coach. The Pistons fired head coach Lawrence Frank at the end of this season after he went 54-94 in two years with the team. Jackson will not be getting paid and this is not a precursor to Jackson taking a job in Detroit. He is just h...

Could Phil Jackson’s Advisory of Detroit Pistons Lead to a Front Office Future in Auburn Hills?

Phil Jackson has drawn up plenty of plays in the past, but could there be a power play being drawn up for Jackson to eventually join the Detroit Pistons’ front office? (pascal, Flickr)
A few weeks ago, I called for a professional relationship between the Detroit Pistons and Phil Jackson based on the mutual connection shared between Jackson and team owner Tom Gores.
I ended up getting my wish, even if it was in a much smaller sense. Late Thursday night, it was announced that Jackson would be helping the Pistons in an advisory role as they search for a new head coach. Now, I’m just sitting around and waiting for Kaley Cuoco to come and grant my other two wishes.
With Jackson now in the fold, Joe Dumars gets a giant helping hand during his most critical hire. More than anything, though, this move could speak volumes about Jackson’s potential future in the Motor City. Since it was announced Jackson was “itching” to come back to basketball, several teams have made overtures about aquiring his services in

Jackson to serve as Pistons consultant

Associated Press Despite Zen Master Phil Jackson and Pistons owner Tom Gores’ close personal friendship, Jackson will not be walking the sidelines of the The Palace next season (or ever). But, in Gores’ efforts to use every resource available to bring the organization the success it enjoyed in the early 90′s and again in the mid-2000′s, he has hired Jackson on in an advisory role. Per the Pistons’ website: “A spokesman for Gores indicated that this is an advisory role and not a formal position inside the Pistons organization.” President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars said that he welcomes Jackson’s opinions (as though he had a choice). “Tom and I discussed using a consultant as part of our decision-making process in our search for a head coach and we feel that Phil Jackson is a great resource to use,” Dumars said. “I look forward to talking with Phil next week.” Thus far, the leader in the clubhouse for the head coaching search appears to be Nate McMillan, a former NBA guard a

Phil Jackson to consult Pistons

Phil Jackson is joining the Detroit Pistons.

No, he's not going to be the new head coach, but the Zen Master will be involved in the search for the next person to fill that role.

Jackson, a friend of Pistons owner Tom Gores, has agreed to advise Gores and team president Joe Dumars as they look for a replacement for Lawrence Frank, who was fired last month.

Phil Jackson is a friend and one of the best minds in the business, Gores told the team website. We are thrilled to have him as an adviser as we make some very important decisions for this franchise.

"Joe and I discussed this, and he and I are in full agreement that this is a great opportunity.

Jackson won 11 championships as a coach -- six with Chicago and five with the Lakers -- and engaged in several dramatic series against the Pistons. Like Dumars, he also won two rings as a player, helping the Knicks to championships in 1970 and 1973.

Tom and I discussed using a consultant as part of our decision-making process in our search for a head

Detroit Pistons: Regular Season Review and Awards

Detroit Pistons: Regular Season Review and Awards
By Mike Elworth: Publisher and Owner at Hoopstuff
Record: 29-53- 12th in West- 23th in NBA
Review: Yes, the Pistons had another poor season, but not much was to be expected, as they simply wanted to develop their talent this season. It worked in most regards, as Greg Monroe has become one of the best big men in the NBA and has to be the most underrated player in the league. Brandon Knight had a solid season when it comes to scoring and if he works on his point guard skills he could be a very capable starting point guard. Andre Drummond, the draft’s biggest risk paid off big time, as the team’s new center has shown star potential, with an excellent motor and athleticism and elite defensive and rebounding skills. He was also not as raw on offense as people thought and should become their starting center next year, as his per 40 minutes numbers were simply incredible. Kyle Singler was a nice surprise as well and proved to be a capable s...

Detroit Pistons Rumors: Nate McMillan, Lindsey Hunter Interview; Search to Cast a Wider Net?

Brian Shaw (left) coached for years under Phil Jackson in addition to playing in the NBA, thus leading to his possible emergence as a candidate to coach the Detroit Pistons. (Raps Fan, Flickr)
The Detroit Pistons search for a new head coach has started to become action based and not simply centered around talk or innuendo during the first two days of this week.
Monday and Tuesday were the first interview days for the Pistons, as the team spoke with Lindsey Hunter the first day of the week and Nate McMillan yesterday according to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press. As we’ve previously detailed, each has head coaching experience with McMillan being the clear leader in career accomplishments behind the bench. As Ellis points out, it’s interesting the first two candidates also have playing experience, a variable which could matter to Detroit following Lawrence Frank’s reign, a coach who may have been disrespected or tuned out having never been an NBA player.
News also came out, courtesy of Ellis as well,

Detroit Pistons: Proceed With Caution In Free Agency

Fans of the Detroit Pistons know all too well how badly free agency can effect a team, when they spend lots of money on the wrong players. In 2009, Joe Dumars and the Pistons had the most money of any NBA team to spend, but it was a poor free agent class and they ended up spending over 80 million dollars on Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. They finally got rid of the former, but the latter is still collecting paychecks for little production. Now 4 years later it is safe to say that both signings were a total and complete failure. The Pistons once again have a lot of cap space this off season, but they must be careful with how they spend it, because their previous mistakes ruined their cap for a number of years and they are just now recovering and Joe Dumars has to be careful, because he cannot afford to make the same mistake again, or else his time as GM will be over soon.
Right now this team is still rebuilding and have collected elite talent that will be the foundation of this t...

Brandon Knight whiffs on uncontested layup

Poor Brandon Knight. When he’s not playing the role of punching bag in other players’ highlight reels, the equally cruel blooper reel is just waiting to swoop in. Thanks to two posters — one of the ankle-breaking variety, one of the Lob City variety — which have garnered countless millions of YouTube views, the Detroit Pistons guard was already having a nightmarish sophomore season. On Wednesday night, things only got worse. Late in the Pistons’ 98-93 loss to the Boston Celtics, Knight broke free for an uncontested layup that would have pulled the Pistons within one point, and made the home team sweat a little over their not-yet-locked-up 7-seed in the Eastern Conference standings. Alas, he hit the highlight (lowlight?) reel trifecta by virtue of botching the gimme, which leads to the obvious question: do we really have to play these last seven games? Or, at the very least, does Brandon Knight have to play these last seven games? [YouTube] Article found on: Next Impulse Sports
