(VIDEO) P.I.T. Talk:Temple guard Khalif Wyatt

College Chalktalk’s Kate Lee had the chance to talk with Temple guard and Atlantic 10 POY, Khalif Wyatt this weekend at the 2013 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. She caught up with him after his team’s 89-85 win on Friday afternoon, where he put up 10 points and two assists. He offered some insight on getting to the next level and shared some fun personal pre-game prep rituals.

Temple star Wyatt says thumb is OK

Temple star guard Khalif Wyatt says his injured left thumb should not be a problem when the Owls play top-seeded Indiana in the NCAA tournament.

The Atlantic 10's player of the year got hurt in the second half of Friday's win over North Carolina State. He came out briefly to get his thumb taped and scored 31 points as the Owls advanced to face the Hoosiers. Wyatt said Saturday that X-rays were negative.

Owls coach Fran Dunphy expects Wyatt to be a ''little tender'' against Indiana on Sunday. Wyatt was checked by the team's doctor again Saturday, and Dunphy says the senior didn't have any trouble with his thumb during practice. Dunphy says the biggest concern is Wyatt's ability to catch the ball, but he doesn't think the injury ''is a huge concern.''

Temple facing Indiana team with few weaknesses

Temple coach Fran Dunphy can't find any weaknesses in Indiana. He'd better hope his players can.

The Owls face a daunting task Sunday when they face the top-seeded Hoosiers in the NCAA tournament, with the winner advancing to the round of 16. With an abundance of size, speed and depth, Indiana is a nightmare matchup for any team, and Dunphy is concerned the Big Ten power might be too much for his squad to handle.

That doesn't mean Temple will back down, not with guard Khalif Wyatt. The Atlantic 10's player of the year scored 31 points in an opening win over North Carolina State despite playing with an injured left thumb. Wyatt says his thumb is sore, but he doesn't expect it to slow him against the Hoosiers.

Three Hits: N.C. State falls to Temple, 76-72

Here are three things we gleaned from No. 9 Temple's 76-72 "upset" of No. 8 North Carolina State (East region), setting the stage for the Owls' Sunday clash with top-seeded Indiana:

1. So much for N.C. State getting a karmic bump off the success of Survive And Advance

With the 30-year anniversary of North Carolina State's national championship, 20-year anniversary of coach Jim Valvano's death and overwhelmingly positive feedback from the Survive And Advance documentary (airing daily on cable), you'd think the Wolfpack would be more than a one-and-done team in March.

As if some higher power should be guiding the program through this tournament.

And yet, for a large portion of its Friday meeting with Temple, N.C. State was clearly the inferior team allowing the Owls to control the perimeter and paint, while aimlessly falling into a 16-point hole at the break.

Sure, in the final tally of stats, N.C. State posted more field goals (29-24), more rebounds (34-22), more assists (1

Wyatt, Temple dispatch NC State

Khalif Wyatt grabbed his left thumb -- the one alarmingly wrapped in black support tape -- pulled it toward his stomach and grimaced.

His non-shooting hand dangled uselessly as he set up behind the free-throw line. He carefully placed it on the bottom of the ball, cautiously dribbled a couple times, then put both hands on it and let it fly.

Painful, but perfect.

Then, he did it five more times.

Wyatt scored 31 points and made six decisive free throws in the final 32 seconds Friday, leading Temple to a 76-72 victory over North Carolina State in the second round of the East Region.

No one-and-done for Temple this time. The Owls' best player wouldn't have it.

''He's as tough a competitor as I've had an opportunity to coach,'' Temple's Fran Dunphy said. ''He wants the moment.''

The ninth-seeded Owls (24-9) will face winner of the Indiana-James Madison game Sunday, which represents a breakthrough for Temple all by itself.

The Owls are trying to shed their

On Thursday afternoon, the 9th-seeded Temple Owls basketball squad engaged in a down-to-the-wire battle with the 8th-seeded North Carolina State Wolfpack. The Owls ultimately came out on top, winning by a score of 76-72, but if this guy’s antics during the game were any indication, perhaps no Temple Owls fan in attendance at University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio was more thrilled — or at least demonstrative, rabid and let’s be honest, a bit “touched” — then the Owls fan featured in the latest GIF provided by GIFULMINATION. Now that’s some unbridled — even slightly unhinged — enthusiasm right there. It wouldn’t be surprising if the guy suffered an aneurysm during the nail-biting conclusion. Can you imagine, if Temple can continue on deeper into the tournament, what it will be like for him as the game get progressively more intense themselves? Hoo boy. And finally...

Temple takes 1-and-done reputation vs NC State

Temple wants to shed its one-and-done reputation in the NCAA tournament.

The ninth-seeded Owls (23-9) are in the tournament for the sixth straight season. In four of the last five, they were knocked out in their first game, including a 58-54 loss to South Florida last year when they had a No. 5 seed.

They'll play eighth-seeded North Carolina State (24-10) on Friday.

Temple expects to have forward Anthony Lee - its top rebounder - back for the game, but coach Fran Dunphy isn't sure how much he'll play. Lee was tested for a possible concussion last week. He'll be needed against the Wolfpack's bigger front line.

N.C. State is commemorating the 30th anniversary of its national title under Jim Valvano.

Owls flying high as March Madness approaches

It’s that time of year again, folks. Every college basketball fan’s favorite time of year.
A time when few sentences are complete without the words bracket or bubble. A time when time double-digit wins are scarce and court storms are aplenty. Sorry Coach K.
That time when Joe Lunardi’s face becomes more recognizable than the head coaches and players of the very teams he analyzes. That time we as fans make bold predictions, sure to be wrong.
Yep. If you can believe it, we’re already a near week into March. Christmas season for college hoops fans alike.
With that said, it’s time we take a look at how the playing field is beginning to unfold and which team is making a late push to ensure a postseason birth.
In the Atlantic 10, Butler, Virginia Commonwealth and Saint Louis are all but locks to make it to the field of 68. Having won six of seven in the short month of February, a win over Butler and VCU already on its resume, throw LaSalle into the mix for an at-large bid as well.

Temple 83, Detroit 78

Khalif Wyatt tallied 20 points to lead Temple to its sixth straight 20-win season, beating Detroit 83-78 Thursday night in a nonconference matchup.

Scootie Randall added 18 points, Jake O'Brien came off the bench to make all six shot attempts for 16 points and Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson paced Temple inside with 13 points and 12 boards.

Temple (20-8), winners of four straight, trailed 39-31 at halftime and tied the game twice before taking its first lead of the second half, 53-51, on a 3-pointer from Wyatt.

From there, the game saw seven lead changes and four ties before Wyatt hit another trey with 1:04 remaining to give the Owls a 77-74 advantage.

Ray McCollum, who led Detroit (19-11) with 21 points, missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer on the Titans' ensuing possession with 44 seconds left and Wyatt answered with two free throws to seal it.

Temple a diffic’owl’t team to figure out

A week and a half ago, I wrote a piece in which I issued each Atlantic 10 men’s basketball team a grade for its play in the non conference. Butler and VCU aside, Temple was perhaps the most impressive team, and the Owls’ grade reflected as such.
Having won 10 of 13 games prior to the start of conference play with a terrific strength of schedule of 29, it looked as though Temple hadn’t lost a beat from last year’s team that earned a No. 5 seed in the Big Dance despite the departure of Juan Fernandez, Ramon Moore and Michael Eric.
At 2-1 in A10 play, we’re still not quite sure how good Fran Dunphy’s club can be this season. (Credit: Temple University Athletic Communications/ Mitchell Leff)
And while the Owls have managed to win two of their first three games in Atlantic 10 play, and will in all likelihood finish among the top teams in the conference come March, the way in which they’ve played this past week has been a bit uninspiring.
Temple kicked off A10 play with a five-point loss ...

Random Athlete Of The Day- Dionte Christmas

Dionte Christmas is from Philadelphia, PA and was born on December 25,1986 (that’s a complete lie he was born on September 15, but I like my story better). Christmas played high school basketball at Samuel Fels HS and led all of Philly in scoring his senior year with 26.5 ppg. Instead of going straight to D1, Christmas went to Philadelphia’s Lutheran Christian Academy where he averaged 18 ppg ultimately earning the lethal scorer a spot on Temple’s roster in the Atlantic 10. In his freshman season the 6-5 guard patiently waited behind star player Mardy Collins, and didn’t get to see the floor too much. However, the next season Christmas got his touches. In a breakout year Christmas averaged a career high 20 ppg while shooting 40% from behind the arc, 46.6% from the field, and 87.1% at the charity strike. He was named 2nd team All-Atlantic 10 and the conference’s Most Improved Player. But despite impressive scoring performances from Christmas including three consecutive 30-point game...

Evaluating Jake O'Brien to Temple

In a transfer season that seems to have no end, the latest is Boston University forward Jake O'Brien transferring to Temple. O'Brien, a senior, is immediately eligible since he has already received his bachelors degree. He left BU because they are ineligible for their conference tournament as punishment since they'll be leaving it next season. In a conference like the America East, they only road to the NCAA Tournament is through winning the conference tourney, so O'Brien left for a realistic chance at postseason play.
Due to a foot injury, O'Brien last appeared in a game on New Year's Eve, 2010. He's since had two surgeries.
So what does he bring to the Owls? Any discussion here assumes that he's back at full speed.
The 23-year-old was the America East freshman of the year, and then 3rd Team All Conference as a sophomore. He was having another solid year as a junior before he hurt his foot. So clearly he has some talent, and for his career he&#...

Temple Basketball Player Tweets About “Hoes”, Promptly Arrested For Soliciting A Prostitute

Reports from CSN Philadelphia are claiming that Temple basketball player Khalif Wyatt was arrested during a two day prostitution sting in the Atlantic City area. According to CSN, Wyatt was arrested for soliciting an undercover officer and for resisting arrest. What makes the rising senior’s arrest all the more embarrassing is the tweet that came from his Twitter account the night of his arrest, which appeared to be his 21st birthday.

Wyatt’s friend also tweeted about the basketball player’s night:

27 other people were arrested in the sting. No word yet on if any of them used “yolo” as an excuse for their actions.

Temple Basketball: Khalif Wyatt Busted on Prostitution

A Temple University basketball standout was one of 28 people arrested and charged as part of a two-day Atlantic City prostitution sting conducted by the city’s special investigation unit on Pacific Avenue.
Owls star Khalif Wyatt, who was celebrating his 21st birthday according to his Twitter feed, was arrested and charged with engaging in prostitution and resisting arrest. Wyatt, who turned 21 on Sunday and will be a senior this coming school year, is from Norristown.
Wyatt has a court date set for Friday in Atlantic City municipal court.
“We have just become aware of the charges and are still gathering information at this point,” Larry Dougherty, Temple’s senior associate athletic director, said in a statement.
According to Atlantic City police, Wyatt was arrested at 1:01 a.m. Sunday near a hotel at Montpelier and Pacific Avenues after he made an offer to pay for sex while on the street. Wyatt fled the scene when he saw a uniformed officer and was apprehended about 50 yards away.

Defense disappears as Billikens fall to Temple

With less than a minute to play, Temple guard Ramone Moore stood just inside half court dribbling the ball with his right hand while calmly motioning for his team to relax with his left.

Moments earlier, a layup by Dwayne Evans pulled Saint Louis within four and momentum appeared shifted in favor of the Billikens.

Coach Majerus stood on the opposite side of the court just outside his coaches box, pointing and barking instructions to his players as they prepared for a pivotal defensive stand.

As the clock ticked down to the final 45 seconds of the game, Moore drove down the right side, pulled up, and nailed a game-clinching jumper from just outside the lane.

Kwamain Mitchell hit a late three-pointer to pull the Billikens within three but clutch free throws by Moore sealed a big conference road victory for Temple (11-4, 1-1 Atlantic 10) and a tough home loss for Saint Louis (13-4, 1-2).

Khalif Wyatt scored a game-high 22 points for Temple and Moore finished with 18, five of which came in the final minute of the game.

We did a good job on their point guard and he was frustrated all night, Majerus said. But then their two wings Wyatt and Moore, we knew they were going to be issues for us. They are issues for a lot of teams.

"We have got to give them a lot of credit. They are a really good team.

Defensive stops were a crutch all night for Saint Louis, who couldnt get the big stops when they needed them most. The Billikens entered the night as the nations fifth best scoring defense, yielding an average of 54.7 points per game.

We needed to be tough, junior guard Kwamain Mitchell said. We werent hitting shots at times, and when we arent hitting shots, we need to be tight on defense."

Senior forward Brian Conklin added, We have to be tougher the last 5 minutes of the game, because there are going to be a lot of games in conference that come down to the last 5 minutes and we have to get stops. We are not doing that right now.

Mitchell finished with 16 points - 13 of which came in the second half - on 6-16 shooting to lead Saint Louis. Dwayne Evans contributed 14 points and 8 rebounds while Jordair Jett and Brian Conklin each chipped in with 12.

The Billikens have lost three of their last four and will try to rebound Saturday when they travel to Charlotte.

We cant feel sorry for ourselves, Conklin said. We have Charlotte Saturday. We have to learn from our mistakes.
