Adelman, Love tandem could be the next Saunders, Garnett

MINNEAPOLIS -- It's one of the darkest yet brightest junctures in the largely painful Minnesota Timberwolves' existence.
Repeated failures have wrought changes at the top of the organization. A success-starved city's cynicism is spiking. Poor luck piles on top of a growing heap of shortcomings.
Yet hope endures, primarily in the form of a big-time talent at the forward position and a man named Flip taking command.
It's not May 17, 2013. It's December 18, 1995.
Flip Saunders just assumed the coaching reins from Bill Blair, who directed a job-costing 6-14 start. Kevin Garnett's a rookie on the verge of becoming a perennial all-star.
What comes next is the golden age, so far, of professional basketball in the Twin Cities.
Eight straight playoff appearances -- the only ones in franchise history -- culminate in a Western Conference finals berth in 2004. Garnett, who's yet to be matched as the organization's all-time defining athlete, wins league MVP honors that year.

Former NBA G Cuttino Mobley Set To Attempt Comeback

Former Houston Rockets and Clippers guard Cuttino Mobley hasn’t played in an NBA game since 2008, after retiring due to the same heart ailment, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, that killed Hank Gathers.
The 37-year-old Mobley is attempting a comeback, and is set to workout for NBA teams in two weeks according to Hoops World.
On May 31, ASM Sports Agency will hold a pro-day for their draft prospects as well as their veteran free agents. Mobley reportedly will be one of the free agents participating in the veteran sessions, according to the agency.
The free agent workouts will include drills and five-on-five. Other big named free agents such as Josh Howard, Christian Eyenga and Rasual Butler will also participate in the pro-day, which will be held at Impact Basketball in Las Vegas.
Mobley averaged 16 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals in his NBA career.

Sources: Rockets Will Decline Team Option On Francisco Garcia

The Houston Rockets will not pick up the team option on Francisco Garcia's contract for next season, according to sources.
Garcia will be an unrestricted free agent in July.
Garcia's deal for next season was worth $6.4 million.
After coming to the Rockets in a trade from the Sacramento Kings, Garcia became a critical reserve and was one of Houston's primary defenders on Kevin Durant in the first round of the playoffs.

NBA Season Wrap Up: Houston Rockets

Now that the first round is in in the rear view mirror, we are examining each of the the playoff teams that have been eliminated. We just reviewed the Lakers 2012-13 season and now we are rounding out the Western Conference's first round casualties with our look at the Houston Rockets.

Houston Rockets:

The Rockets had one of the more interesting seasons of any team in the league. GM Daryl Morey put himself into contention for executive of the year with one move when they traded for James Harden just before the season started. They went from a projected lottery team that couldn't get a superstar to a surprise playoff team with a 45-37 record.

Houston was also one of the league's most exciting teams to watch and Harden was at the center of it all. He scored 25.9 points, dished out 5.8 assists and collected 4.9 rebounds per game. The Rockets were the second highest scoring team in the league and the former third overall pick proved that he could be "the g...

McHale Wants Rockets To 'Play Bigger'

Kevin McHale wants the Houston Rockets to add more size in their starting lineup.
"I think we've got to play bigger," McHale said. "We played small especially after trading Patrick Patterson. A couple of guys stepped up and tried to play the four spot. We're going to have to play bigger, but one of the young bigs we have, I think one of those guys will definitely emerge, maybe a couple of them."
The Rockets tried several options at the power forward position, including Donatas Motiejunas and Greg Smith, with Thomas Robinson and Terrence Jones getting time as well.
In the playoffs against Oklahoma City, McHale elected to go with a smaller starting lineup that didn't feature a traditional power forward.
"Now, we need a summer of growth," McHale said. "I think Terrence Jones, Thomas Robinson, Donatas Motiejunas, one of those guys, or maybe a couple of them will have to step up and play well."

Houston Rockets: Season Review and Awards

Houston Rockets: Season Review and Awards
By Brandon Hartman: Hoopstuff Senior Writer
Record: 45-37- 8th in West
Review: Ladies and Gentlemen, please strap yourself in tightly as the NBA’s bandwagon team of the year has lifted off. It might be strange to imagine, but if this season is anything to go by, the Houston Rockets are now America’s team. The transformation from irrelevant to potential superpower has taken off in Houston. The transfusion of youth, recklessness, and a whole lot of shooting made Houston unbeatable on their best nights this year. The only problem, for this season at least, is that Houston’s best nights came far too inconsistently for them to make a true dent in the playoffs. Forced to gel a large number of new faces together in a short amount of time, the Rockets performed admirably this season, but showed their lack of continuity when it mattered most. Their team defense was their kryptonite and was further proof that no matter how many points you score, you c...

NBA 2013 Review: Jeremy Lin

NBA 2013 Review: Jeremy Lin
-by David Rountree

Jeremy Lin last season was an amazing sensation for the New York Knicks, but things have slowed down a bit for the budding star. As a Houston Rocket he learned how it felt to be a starting point guard for the entire season, and there were some bumps in the road for the star. Lin had looked spectacular, average, and even abysmal at times. So what are some of the things going in the off-season he can improve on?

The Good

Lin played and started in every game for the Rockets this regular season, which is a good sign after having knee surgery around this time last year. His game blended well with the Rocket’s superstar James Harden and he ran the team at a solid rate. Lin averaged six assists this season and 13 points; hardly All-Star numbers but still very solid for the Rocket’s situation. The team is very young and was incorporating a lot of new players. He shot 44% from the field and averaged close to two steals a game with 1.6 and his turnov

James Harden Says He’ll Be Active In Recruiting Players To Houston

James Harden said back in December that he had already begun recruiting free agents to Houston, making the point that nowadays you need “two or even more” stars to win the championship. When asked about it again following the Rockets’ first round series loss to the Thunder, Harden said he’ll will indeed be active in recruiting free agents this summer.
According to Marc Stein, ESPN:
On his way out of the building, furthermore, Harden told ESPN.com that he intends to be an active member of the Rockets’ recruiting efforts this summer.
“Hell, yeah,” Harden said. “There’s a lot of good options out there.”
Asked specifically about the Lakers’ Howard, with the Rockets widely regarded as the team with the best shot of stealing him away from L.A., Harden broke into a smile and added: “Maybe. Possibly.”

James Harden vows to help the Houston Rockets recruit free agents

The Houston Rockets have found the face of their franchise. Despite not being able to take advantage of the weaker-than-usual Oklahoma City Thunder in the playoffs, the Rockets feel that they are a team on the rise.
Last off-season, the initial thought was that Jeremy Lin was imported to Texas to give the Rockets a brand to anchor their logo on.
That did not exactly work out as James Harden rode into town and took over both on and off the court.
Harden’s combo platter of charisma and skill have rendered him a big time player.
As Houston moves on to seek new pieces to their puzzle, Harden says that he is ready to recruit free agents to help their cause.

Young Rockets look to future after playoff loss

The young Rockets are eager to see what they can do in James Harden's second season in Houston.

The Rockets reached the playoffs for the first time since 2009 and battled back from a 3-0 deficit before being eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 6.

Harden was traded to the Rockets just days before the season opener, leaving him little time to bond with his teammates before stepping in as the leader in Houston.

''Now we have an entire summer together,'' Harden said. ''This was definitely a great learning experience, but now we can use the summertime to get better.''

When asked how the time would help the Rockets, Harden couldn't narrow it down to just one thing.

''Confidence, chemistry - everything,'' Harden said. ''Kind of knowing where each other will be on the court. Getting a feel for each other off the court will help us just as much on the court. So, it's going to help us build our relationship up. We have a core group of

James Harden’s strep throat so bad he struggled to drink water

James Harden has been playing for the Houston Rockets despite being ill.
The Rockets guard scored 31 points in a surprising Game 5 win over the Thunder in Oklahoma City on Wednesday night, which was extremely impressive considering he was sick and later diagnosed with strep throat.
Harden still played in Game 6 despite the illness.
During Game 6, ESPN’s Holly Rowe reported that Harden’s throat was so bad during Game 5 that he had difficulty drinking water during timeouts. Rowe says Harden had to spray his throat with Chloraseptic to numb it before drinking water. Harden also had an IV at the hospital on Thursday.
Harden still played plenty of minutes and was Houston’s top scorer in the first half of Game 6.
He’s not exactly going to be remembered like Michael Jordan was for the “flu game,” but Harden’s effort is pretty impressive nonetheless.

Following Oklahoma City’s 107-100 loss to the Rockets in Game 5 Wednesday, Houston rookie, Royce White, who has yet to log a single minute this season, tweeted at Kevin Durant “Y’all are looking SHAAAKYY BAAABYY,” which sparked some controversy especially since the No. 16 pick in last year’s draft has been a non-factor for the team all season and has constantly caused unnecessary drama. Friday, Kevin Durant responded to the comments at the team’s shootaround in Houston prior to Game 6, claiming he doesn’t know who Royce White is and hadn’t heard of the comments up until this point: “Who is that?” Durant asked when asked his reaction to White’s comments.
This is going to most likely be one of those issues which we never get a straight answer, but the comedic value is enough just how it is. Wednesday night after the Rockets beat the Thunder in Game 5, CSN Houston held their unusual postgame show. However, it ended up being one of the odder shows as a young child with pants falling down walked in the background with no shame. Just odd. Your browser does not support iframes.
Gay rights supporters photobomb protest outside OKC game

When the site Ultimate Rockets broke the news on Tuesday that the Westboro Baptist Church intended to protest outside of Chesapeake Energy Arena on Wednesday during Game 5 of the Western Conference quarterfinals game between the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder, it was assumed that an ugly scene was not only possible, but likely. The Westboro Baptist Church is notorious for picketing and protesting outside of events to espouse its anti-homosexuality agenda. When NBA center Jason Collins announced his homosexuality earlier this week, the church had a new target: the NBA. A news release from the church indicated its intentions as follows, as reported by Huffington Post: “Now has-been pervert Jason Collins has ‘come out’ admitting he’s a proud ***,” officials write in the release. “Lift up your voice against this awful sin; use the platform God gave you to warn your fellow man to flee destruction.” Fortunately, the scene outside the arena was not as volatile as expected, as ev...

Royce White taunts Kevin Durant on Twitter

Royce White is an enigma in the greatest sense of the word. White is famous for suffering from an anxiety disorder, but a lot of his actions don’t scream of a disorder, or being anxious about much of anything. White who was drafted by the Houston Rockets, but has spent the whole season between the D-League and countless tv appearances, was back at it again last night. White’s Houston Rockets teammates staved off elimination last night by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder on the road to extend the series to a game six. Royce of course is not playing, but had enough time to tweet his happiness and take a shot at Kevin Durant in the process. Royce White needs to spend more time focusing on getting on a NBA court and keeping his baby mama drama out of the public eye. We understand your excited Royce, but to taunt the man who may possibly be the best player in the game, is just stupid. On top of that, of all the phrases to use, you of all people tell Kevin Durant he’s looking shaky. H/T Larry Brown S

Chandler Parsons Apologizes On Twitter For Missed Fist Bump

Chandler Parsons of the Houston Rockets was very excited to have his Rockets beat the Thunder on Monday night. During the celebration he unintentionally left one fan hanging while reaching out for a pound, which you can see below. Chandler had no clue he left the poor fan hanging and he saw video of the missed bump today and immediately apologized via Twitter. Pretty cool gesture from the young man.

Rockets’ Jeremy Lin sits out Game 4

Houston Rockets guard Jeremy Lin’s chest injury kept him out of last night’s Game 4 lineup as his team took on the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. The Rockets were able to extend the series, and Lin is hoping to return in time for Game 5.It was reported just prior to the contest that Lin had been ruled out due to his bruised chest, which he sustained during Game 2 of the series. It caused him to miss the second half of that contest, but he did return for Game 3.While Lin was able to suit up for the third game of the series, he was mostly ineffective for Houston. He scored only two points on 1-of-6 shooting with one assist over 18 minutes.Considering he was only a shell of himself in Game 3, the Rockets elected to sideline Lin for Game 4. Houston was able to overcome the Russell Westbrook-less Thunder and extend the series. If Lin has to miss another contest, a majority of the burden of his absence will again fall on James Harden and Patrick Beverley.Follow @hoopsinjurynew

Parsons saves Rockets from series sweep

HOUSTON The amorphous blob that had been the Houston Rockets organization is starting to look slightly more morphous these days. Hard to tell exactly what they are, but there are some things growing out from it here and there.

The newest appendage to sprout goes by the name Chandler Parsons. He was a second-round draft pick in 2011 and is making like an Armani suit at outlet mall prices. He had 27 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in a 105-103 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday in Houston. His play rescued the Rockets from a series sweep and from one of James Harden's worst performances of the season, recording 15 points and 10 turnovers.

"I did have a double double," Harden joked.

But the Rockets beat the Thunder anyway. It was unbelievable right up until it happened.

The Rockets will still lose the series, probably in five games, but the point around here was never really to win playoff series this year anyway. Nobody in the Rockets organization thought this was a championsh

Parsons leaves fan hanging on fist bump

The Houston Rockets avoided the sweep by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder Monday night 105-103 and extended the series to a Game 5 (3-1 OKC). Rockets fans had plenty to cheer for as their team defended and denied a final shot attempt by the Thunder – but Chandler Parson’s would have none of the celebrating as he humorously and awkwardly denied a fist bump to a courtside fan.
