Rice hoping D-League success helps on draft night

(Eds: APNewsNow.) By MICHAEL MAROT AP Sports Writer Glen Rice Jr. is back.

After taking an unexpected detour through the NBA's D-League, he won a title, rebuilt his image and is now trying to make history in a way very different from his famous father.

Rice is no traditional draft prospect.

After three mostly mediocre seasons at Georgia Tech, he was kicked off the team for trouble off the court and opted to pursue his future in the D-League. At first, playing time was sparse. But after several call-ups and injuries gave Rice more playing time, he emerged as a star, averaging 25.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in Rio Grande Valley's playoff run.

If all goes well in team workouts, Rice could become the first player taken in the first round after playing a season in the D-League.

Tony Snell, Glen Rice Jr. highlight pre-draft workout

ST. FRANCIS, Wis. -- The battle was so intense between Glen Rice Jr. and Tony Snell during Tuesday's draft workout at the Cousins Center that all Snell could do was smile and laugh when asked about it.
The two wing prospects went at it as the main attraction in Milwaukee's first draft workout, as Rice and Snell were joined by Syracuse forward James Southerland, Iowa State guard Will Clyburn. Marquette point guard Junior Cadougan and Dakota State guard Tyrone Gordon filled out the workout.
Afterward, Bucks director of scouting Billy McKinney said the four in Milwaukee on Tuesday are wing players that the team is looking at right now.
Different mock drafts have Rice, Snell and Southerland all over the places. Rice is ranked as the 23rd best player in the draft by ESPN.com's Chad Ford, going 26th overall by Draft Express, but going 34th overall by NBADraft.net.
Ford has Snell as the 33rd best player in the draft, while NBADraft.net has the former New Mexico guard going 19th overall. Draft Express has

Projected 2013-14 Lineup: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

You have to hand it to Yellow Jacket’s head coach Brian Gregory. Last year he decided rebuilding meant going through some real growing pains, so he threw his young freshmen into the ring and said, “good luck.”
While they ended up finishing just 16-15 on the year, by season’s end, I was left thinking, “hey, this team might not be the suckiest sucks out there.”
After a rough 0-4 start in the ACC, the Yellow Jackets actually finished a not-so-tragic 6-8 in conference. Three of those wins came on the road, one against eventual league champ, Miami. My point…while it may have been subtle, there was improvement. Now let’s see what those kids do for an encore.
Projected 2013-14 Lineup:
PG – Soloman Poole (SO), 6-0/180
SG – Chris Bolden (SO), 6-3/210
SF – Marcus Georges-Hunt (SO), 6-5/220
PF – Robert Carter (SO), 6-8/245
C – Daniel Miller (SR), 6-11/260
To become a truly good team, you don’t need just a superstar, you need a trio and that’s what the Yellow Jackets have. Those three amigos

Georgia Tech's Brandon Reed will transfer

A couple years ago Brandon Reed transferred into Georgia Tech, but never lived up to the expectations for the Yellow Jackets. After Reed completes summer school, he'll graduate, transfer to Arkansas State, and be eligible to play next season at his 3rd school of his collegiate career.
Brian Gregory called Reed "an integral part of this team over the last two years". Reed is the second Yellow Jacket to transfer since the season ended, joining Julian Royal.

Georgia Tech's Reed will transfer

Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory says junior guard Brandon Reed plans to transfer to another school to complete his eligibility.

Gregory said Friday Reed will transfer after he graduates at the end of the summer term.

Reed, a strong 3-point shooter, started Georgia Tech's first 15 games and averaged 5.2 points for the season. He lost playing time when freshman Chris Bolden, another strong shooter, moved into Gregory's starting lineup.

Gregory says Reed, from Powder Springs, Ga., has been ''an integral part of this team over the last two years'' after transferring to Georgia Tech from Arkansas State.

Reed started 43 games in two seasons and averaged 6.4 points.

Ex-Ga Tech F Royal will transfer to George Mason

Former Georgia Tech forward Julian Royal is transferring to George Mason.

George Mason announced Friday that the 6-foot-8 Royal will sit out the upcoming season and then have two years of eligibility.

Royal said in March he was leaving Georgia Tech after averaging only 6.6 minutes and 1.7 points in 24 games as a sophomore. His playing time was limited due in part to the emergence of freshman Robert Carter Jr.

Royal averaged 4.4 points per game as a freshman during the 2011-12 season.

Georgia Tech is also losing junior guard Brandon Reed, who announced Friday that he plans to transfer to another school to complete his eligibility.

Georgia Tech sophomore to transfer

Via The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Julian Royal of Georgia Tech is transferring according to sources at the school. Here are some photos of the Sophomore during his stint at Georgia Tech.
Georgia Tech forward Julian Royal will transfer at the end of the semester. Royal, a sophomore, will have two year of eligibility remaining.
The move does not come as a great surprise. Royal, from Milton High, saw his minutes and role diminish considerably this season. He played in 30 games as a freshman, averaging 16.0 minutes, and his playing time increased from the nonconference season to the ACC schedule as he adjusted to the college game.
This season, with forward Robert Carter’s arrival, coach Brian Gregory largely used a three-man rotation for the frontcourt with Daniel Miller, Kammeon Holsey and Carter. He played in 11 of the 18 conference games, playing double-digit minutes in only one of them.
Royal represented Gregory’s first victory at Tech. After having committed to Tech when Paul ...

Ga. Tech needs two ACC wins to make NIT

ATLANTA In one respect, Georgia Tech's Saturday loss to Boston College had absolutely no bearing on its path to an improbable ACC tournament championship.

Regardless of the weekend result, the Yellow Jackets and Eagles would still be playing one another in the tourney opener (preliminary round) as the transposed No. 8 or 9 seeds and the winner of Thursday's clash in Greensboro (12 p.m. EST) will be a big-time underdog against top-seeded Miami on Friday.

But ay, here's the rub: By dropping its regular-season finale, Georgia Tech essentially has no choice but to knock off BC and Miami this week, if it harbors any realistic dreams of garnering an NIT invitation. Anything short of two wins (or some kind of memorable overtime defeat to the 'Canes) would likely mean a ticket to the College Basketball Invitational.

(Point of order: Georgia Tech hasn't claimed back-to-back victories since Fordham and Chattanooga on Dec. 29 and Jan. 2.)

What's the CBI, you ask?

Georgia Tech shocks Miami with buzzer-beater

I guess the premature talk of crowning Miami as the team to beat is officially over, right? Earlier in the ACC season, they destroyed a Ryan Kelly-less Duke team, and beat up a young inexeperienced UNC team. But lately, they have looked a little bit less dominant. Last night, playing at home, Miami was stunned by a terrible Georgia Tech basketball team for their 3rd loss in 4 games. Marcus Georges-Hunt’s tip-in off his own miss left the crowd stunned and put an ACC title celebration on ice in Coral Gables: Miami still owns at least a share of a title, but had an opportunity last night to clinch it outright. While nobody is going to frown too much over their loss to Duke, their other two losses in conference have come against poor competition. That does not bode well for a deep tourney run.
Georgia Tech slumping out of NIT field

ATLANTA It's hard to lament the loss of something you never truly owned.

And yet, in the wake of its 70-57 home defeat to North Carolina State on Sunday, Georgia Tech undoubtedly feels the sting of surrendering something more than just a hard-fought loss to a quality ACC opponent.

In a nutshell, the Yellow Jackets have lost whatever power, or upper hand, they once possessed with the NIT selection committee.

With two regular-season games (@ Miami, @ Boston College) and the conference tournament on the remaining docket, Georgia Tech (15-13, 5-11) still has a chance to upgrade its resume for the NIT powers-that-be.

But now, without a signature win against the Wolfpack, the Yellow Jackets have painted themselves into a corner, likely needing wins over Miami, Boston College and one or two ACC tourney victories ... or a split against MiamiBoston College and then an upset-filled run to the ACC semifinals to secure a spot in the 32-team NIT field.

Anything short of that may be too dicey for a program that&#

Video: Georgia Tech player hits the floor hard after dunking

Georgia Tech suffered a painful 73-57 defeat to No. 3 Duke in more ways than one on Thursday. Trailing by 14 five minutes into the second half, Yellow Jackets forward Robert Carter Jr streaks through the lane and proceeds to slam home an impressive dunk. On the way down, however, he gets caught up on Duke's Miles Plumlee and goes down hard, back-first, onto the hardwood. Ouch. The good news is that Carter was able to bounce up and walk off the floor on his own power. The bad news is his team got outscored 46-29 in the second half after holding a one-point edge at the break.Carter finished with eight points and nine rebounds.

Georgia Tech beats St. Mary's (Cal) 65-56

Brandon Reed scored 19 points and Georgia Tech made six 3-pointers in the second half to beat Saint Mary's (Cal) 65-56 on Sunday, capturing third place in the DirecTV Classic.

Stephen Holt had a team-high 10 points for Saint Mary's (4-2) in the first-ever meeting between the schools.

Saint Mary's led 26-23 at halftime despite the fact that guard Matthew Dellavedova, who had a career-high 32 points in Thursday's win over Drexel, missed all three of his shots in the half before finishing 1 for 8 with five points.

Kammeon Holsey, who has come off the Georgia Tech bench after starting every game last season, did not make his first field goal until he converted a jumper with 6:28 left for a 46-42 lead. The Yellow Jackets (4-1) broke it open with an 11-2 run, including two 3-pointers by Reed, and took a 58-48 lead with 56 seconds to play.

Cremins rallying Georgia Tech's former players

Bobby Cremins is rallying Georgia Tech's old-timers for the program's new coach.

Cremins, who retired in March as the College of Charleston's coach, was back at Georgia Tech on Wednesday. Cremins says he is recruiting former players, assistant coaches and student managers to return as a show of support for second-year coach Brian Gregory when Georgia Tech opens its new arena Nov. 9 against Tulane.

The 65-year-old Cremins was Georgia Tech's coach for 19 years - from 1981-2000. His name was placed on Georgia Tech's court at its old Alexander Memorial Coliseum in 2003. The court at the new McCamish Pavilion also will bear his name.

Cremins says his first priority is still at the College of Charleston as a part-time assistant to the school's president, George Benson.

Georgia Tech guard Heyward to miss season

Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory says guard Corey Heyward is expected to miss the 2012-13 season after tearing a ligament in his left knee in a pickup game.

Heyward, a former standout at Peachtree Ridge High School in the Atlanta area, signed with Georgia Tech after spending one year at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia.

Gregory said Monday Heyward tore his left anterior cruciate ligament on Thursday and will have surgery in the next two weeks. The recovery period usually takes up to a year.

Heyward enrolled at Georgia Tech for summer semester.

Gregory says Heyward's injury is ''a temporary setback.''

Touted point guard Solomon Poole pops for Georgia Tech

In terms of upside, not many point guards in the 2013 class can match Solomon Poole, an electric 6′-1″ player from Terry Parker (FL).
