Miami Hurricanes Land Texas Transfer

It’s been a busy off-season for Miami Hurricanes head coach Jim Larranaga, as he landed his third transfer since the end of the 2012-13 season.
Sheldon McClellan, the Texas Longhorns’ second leading score this past season, is headed to South Beach.
At 6-4, McClellan has good size for a shooting guard. He’s got the tools to be a great player. An above the rim athlete, McClellan struggles to hit threes (just 27% from three last year), but he has a quick first step and solid ball handling skills. He loves to slash and attack them rim. He averaged 13.5 points in just 27 minutes per game.
However, the issue he has always had is mental. He lacks focus and appears to checkout from time to time. This is challenging for any coach, but if there is one man who can work with him, it’s a veteran guy like Larranaga.
McClellan will have to sit out a year, but will have two years of eligibility left.
Ironically, after Shane Larkin declared for the NBA, the Miami’s back court was nearly cleared out. Now when 2014-20

Evaluating Donnavan Kirk to Miami

Following Miami's ACC winning 2012-13 season, the team was pretty much decimated. Between graduating seniors and the loss of Shane Larkin to the NBA, the Canes lost 82% of their minutes. Now they're Rion Brown, Tone Jekiri, and a bunch of guys who have been given uniforms.

But the transfer market is always a source of new blood for teams like this, and sure enough Miami found some.

Miami has picked up DePaul transfer Donnavan Kirk, per source. Big man can play his final year ASAP.
	— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) June 12, 2013

If the name sounds familiar to Miami fans, it's because it is. The 6-9 power forward from Detroit committed to the Canes in 2008. But after his first season, which was derailed by an injury, he transferred to DePaul. He got his degree, and now he's coming back and is immediately eligible.

So what to expect from the senior's bookend season in Coral Gables?

At DePaul he was a role player, averaging 6.2 points and 3.9 boards. He w...

2013 Draft Report: Kenny Kadji

Kenny Kadji was one of the most versatile players in the ACC this past season. A true stretch four, he’s capable of nailing a three pointer (hit 35 percent last year, 41 percent as a junior). He works best off a catch-and-shoot or a pick-and-pop. He’s got a solid high release that’s tough to defend.
Player: Kenny Kadji
Position: Power Forward
Size: 6-11/240
Age: 24
School: Miami
Last Season Stats: 12.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.3 blocks
THE GOOD:
A good ball handler to his right, especially for a big man. He lives to pump fake from deep when his defender charges him and drives it inside, putting up a nice floater.
Experts have said he’s not a great athlete, but I was always impressed by what I saw, so I wasn’t surprised when I heard he had a 38-inch vertical leap at a recent NBA tryout.
Inside, he has a nice touch and relies a ton on a fade away that’s impossible to block.
As a defender, he’s a capable defender in the post thanks to his height and length, but he dos his best work helping

Shane Larkin’s speed and athleticism stand out

via Rant Sports

Shane Larkin was previously an under-the-radar draft prospect. Until the Draft Combine. Shane Larkin was noted as one of the most athletic players. Scouts took a second look, and looked beyond two good and remarkable seasons in Miami to a skill set that can thrive at the next level. Shane Larkin recorded the second-biggest maximum vertical leap in combine history and fastest in the sprint drills. Not bad at all.

per Rant Sports:

Although the NBA is a completely different animal than college basketball, Shane Larkin was great for the Miami Hurricanes and he could definitely make it at the next level.
Larkin only played two seasons with the team, but he only needed one to show NBA scouts that he could make a living off of playing basketball.
In this past season, Larkin put up 14.5 points per game, 4.6 assists per game and 3.8 rebounds per game. Although there are point guards that had better stats this season, Larkin was very important to his team and it is going ...

JUCO Kelly joins Hurricanes basketball program

MIAMI -- Junior college transfer James Kelly signed a national letter of intent with the Miami Hurricanes, giving coach Jim Larranaga seven new players after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference title last season.

The 6-foot-8 Kelly averaged 18.3 points and 10.1 rebounds last season for Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio and led his team to the NJCAA Division II tournament semifinals.

The Hurricanes on Tuesday also announced the signing of Manu LeComte, a 5-9 point guard from Belgium. LeComte recently played in the U18 European Championship, where he led his team in scoring at 12.0 points per game.

Miami earlier added former Kansas State starting point guard Angel Rodriguez, who last season helped the Wildcats to the Big 12 Championship, a 27-8 record and an appearance in the NCAA tournament. In two seasons at Kansas State, Rodriguez averaged 9.8 points and 4.2 assists per game.

Rodriguez transferred to be closer to his mother and two younger brothers, who live in his native Puerto Rico. He's se

Hurricanes basketball adds five to roster

Looking to keep the momentum going from their historic ACC championship run, the Miami Hurricanes infused talent, size and experience into their lineup Tuesday.

Coach Jim Larranaga announced the additions of dual-sport athletes Cornelius Elder and Derrick Griffin, as well as the signings of James Kelly, Manu LeComte, Angel Rodriguez.

"Our recruiting class in the spring has added a lot of versatility and much-needed skills to our program," Larranaga said. "We have graduated five outstanding seniors and lost Shane Larkin to the NBA Draft, so we have a lot of holes to fill."

Elder, ranked among the nation's top running backs at Ensworth High in Nashville, Tenn., also earned recognition from The Tennessean as 2013 boys basketball player of the year. The 5-11, 165-pound point guard averaged 20.2 points, 4.7 assists and 4.2 steals during his senior season.

Evaluating Angel Rodriguez to Miami

Miami's losses are staggering. They lost five seniors, PG Shane Larkin and a reserve freshman (Bishop Daniels). All told that adds up to 82% of their minutes. Couple that with a stronger ACC and the Hurricanes might be epically bad. Like 1971-1985 bad. Luckily, the program got a shot in the arm when K-State sophomore Angel Rodriguez pledged to the Canes today. First #Canes picture of the newest @caneshoops point guard: Angel Rodriguez. #WelcomeToTheU instagram.com/p/Yx44gymvQ5/ — Miami Hurricanes (@hurricanesports) May 1, 2013 Can he play? Who cares - he's a warm body that played high major basketball, which makes him an instant starter. But, in reality, he can play, and he's pretty much the perfect bridge from no leaders to new leaders. This assumes he gets a waiver to play immediately, for which he'll be applying. The diminutive point guard, who comes from Krop High School in Miami-Dade County, would immediately step in for Shane Larkin. He aver...

Miami's Larkin will enter NBA draft

Miami guard Shane Larkin says he will forgo his final two years of college eligibility and enter the NBA draft.

Larkin averaged 14.5 points and 4.6 assists this season for the Hurricanes, who won 29 games, climbed as high as No. 2 in The Associated Press Top 25 and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

Larkin's decision means Miami will be without its top six scorers from this season when it takes the court next fall. Larkin led the Hurricanes in scoring. The next five highest scorers for Miami were all seniors.

Larkin is the son of Baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, and had until the end of Sunday to officially enter the draft.

The Hurricanes were 48-20 with Larkin in their lineup.

Dad: Larkin leaning toward NBA

Miami Hurricanes sophomore Shane Larkin is leaning strongly toward turning pro and will declare for the NBA draft unless he has a last-minute change of heart, his father said.

Baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin said he spoke Friday with his son, who plans to announce his decision at a news conference Sunday.

''All indications are he's going into the draft, unless he has an epiphany,'' the elder Larkin said. ''All of the information he has received is that this is the time for him to come out. He's not 100-percent committed. He wants to talk to the coaches first. But if nothing changes, he's going to declare for the draft.''

Larkin blossomed this past season at point guard, helping attract sellout crowds and national attention for a Hurricanes program perennially overshadowed by college football and South Florida's four professional sports teams.

Miami won the Atlantic Coast Conference and the league tournament, both for the first time. Larkin finished sixth

Shane is the son of Barry Larkin, Baseball Hall of Famer, but chose basketball over baseball. Based on this video showing Shane throwing the ceremonial first pitch over the catcher's head and into the backstop, we'd say he made the right choice.

Jim Larranaga dances like Muhammad Ali after Miami defeats Illinois (Video)

Miami Hurricanes men's basketball coach Jim Larranaga danced like legendary boxer Muhammad Ali in the locker room after Sunday's win over Illinois to reach the round of the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.

Larranaga was giving his postgame speech when he told his players "I asked you guys to be fighters. You know what I saw out there? Muhammad Ali!"

Larranaga started shuffling his feet and throwing some punches, and naturally, the players loved it.

Larranaga dances like Muhammad Ali

The Miami Hurricanes are making a trip to the Sweet 16 after their 63-59 victory of Illinois. In the locker room after the game, Hurricanes head coach Jim Larranaga told his team that they had the fighting spirit of Muhammad Ali. Than Larranaga did something totally unexpected and started to shuffle his feet and throwing punches like Ali.
Roy Williams spoke in Miami's locker room

After Miami defeated North Carolina in this past Sunday’s ACC Tournament title game, Tarheels coach Roy Williams went into the Hurricanes’ locker room to offer congratulations to the team. Weird, right? Maybe this kind of thing happens more often than we know? I’d love to know what was going through coach Jim Larranaga’s head while Williams spoke. Was he honored?

Georgia Tech shocks Miami with buzzer-beater

I guess the premature talk of crowning Miami as the team to beat is officially over, right? Earlier in the ACC season, they destroyed a Ryan Kelly-less Duke team, and beat up a young inexeperienced UNC team. But lately, they have looked a little bit less dominant. Last night, playing at home, Miami was stunned by a terrible Georgia Tech basketball team for their 3rd loss in 4 games. Marcus Georges-Hunt’s tip-in off his own miss left the crowd stunned and put an ACC title celebration on ice in Coral Gables: Miami still owns at least a share of a title, but had an opportunity last night to clinch it outright. While nobody is going to frown too much over their loss to Duke, their other two losses in conference have come against poor competition. That does not bode well for a deep tourney run.
Miami’s McKinney Jones and Gamble among the ACC’s overlooked players

Durand Scott, Kenny Kadji and Shane Larkin handle most of the scoring this season for Miami.
Trey McKinney Jones is one of Miami’s unheralded players this season. The senior guard leads the team in free throw percentage and is second in 3-pointers made. (Credit: HurricaneSports.com)
Reggie Johnson and Kadji grab most of the rebounds for the third-ranked Hurricanes (20-3, 11-0 ACC).
Johnson commands plenty of attention off the court as perhaps the most entertaining interview in college basketball.
With those players sharing most of the spotlight, the contributions of seniors Trey McKinney Jones and Julian Gamble remain largely overlooked by those outside of Miami. Second-year Canes coach Jim Larranaga certainly recognizes their importance in a historic season for his squad, which has won 12 straight games and has its highest ranking in school history going into Sunday’s contest at Clemson.

Video of the Week: Canes’ Slap the Floor on D

At a school known mostly for it’s football team, the 2012-2013 Miami Hurricanes basketball team has taken over as the top sports team on campus. This past week the Hurricanes upset #1 Duke and in-state rival Florida State by a wide margin of 161-110. The Canes upset of the Blue Devils marks the first victory against a top-ranked team in school history. The Duke game also marked the first complete sell-out in the history of the school’s Bank United Center. With victory’s against Duke and Michigan State so far this season, the Hurricanes look to be a legit Tourney team led by former-George Mason coach, Jim Larranaga. Here’s a video of the Canes mocking the Duke Blue Devils by slapping the floor on defense. Click here to view the video on YouTube. -Abergel
