Michael Jordan Moves to Change Charlotte Team Name Back to Hornets, But Switch Likely Won’t Happen Until 2014 Season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan is changing his team’s name to the Hornets, a person familiar with the situation said.
The person said Jordan will detail the timetable for the change to be completed at a news conference the Bobcats have scheduled for Tuesday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on a condition of anonymity because the name change has not been publicly announced.
NBA deputy commissioner and COO Adam Silver previously said it would take “about 18 months” for the Bobcats to change their name. That means Charlotte could once again become the Hornets by the 2014-15 season.
The Hornets played in Charlotte from 1988-2002 before then-owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans.
The New Orleans Hornets recently changed their name to the Pelicans.
Silver said in an April interview that if the Bobcats decided to change their name to the Hornets, it would be “an enormously complex process and a very expensive process for the team...

Will Michael Kidd-Gilchrist become a Hornet?

Back in June of 2012, Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist became the first pair of teammates to be selected #1 and #2 in the NBA Draft. The New Orleans Hornets selected Davis, and MKG went to Michael Jordan’s Charlotte Bobcats. The New Orleans franchise made some news with their proposals to change the nickname from Hornets to Pelicans at season’s end. With Anthony Davis now becoming a Pelican, what happens to the “Hornets” name?

If you were born before 1990, you may remember the Hornets name came from the organization in Charlotte. The Charlotte Hornets formed in 1988 until 2002 when the team moved to New Orleans. Since that move, the franchise has hit some really rough spots. The team was totally displaced after Hurricane Katrina forced them to move to Oklahoma City. After the Hornets came back to New Orleans, Oklahoma City was rewarded with their own NBA team when the Seattle Supersonics defected. You may now know those guys as the Thunder. The Hornets then lose their franchise player in Chri

Charlotte Bobcats Could Change Name Back To Hornets

The Charlotte Bobcats have began the process of changing their name back to the Charlotte Hornets.
A source with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports of the move, along with the team’s move to arrange digital assets, which would allow for a change to the original nickname.
No timetable has been announced for the name switch, but ‘vice’ NBA commissioner Adam Silver, told season ticket holders in April that a change could take at least 18 months to implement.
Owner Michael Jordan announced back in February that the team hired a ‘national polling group’ to determine how fans felt about the name change, the poll yielded mix results.
The Charlotte Hornets had held that name from their 1988 birth to their 2002 move to New Orleans where they became the New Orleans Hornets–now Pelicans.
Are you a fan of the name change?

Welcome Back The Charlotte Hornets

According to CBS Sports, it looks like the team that was in existence in name from 1988 to 2002 will be returning to the front of jerseys in the Queen City after all...

The HQ guesses you could call it "bringing Hugo back..."

It was something that the team had considered thinking about...

In a November interview with NBC Charlotte's news partner, The Charlotte Observer, Michael Jordan said he was open to the idea of reclaiming the Hornets.

"It's definitely an interest down the road, but right now it's the New Orleans Hornets," Jordan told the Observer. "We would definitely entertain the opportunity. That's as much as we can say right now. We've heard the community ask the question, and we would listen."

It also would be important for a bad team to try and find ways to reach out to the community... and this isn't a bad way to start...
Like the fans hadn't already thought about it...

The Dalai Lama a ... Pelicans fan?

When the New Orleans Hornets changed their team name a few months ago, they did so with the blessing of the NBA.

And now, it seems they've done so as well with the blessing of the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama is in New Orleans this week for several speaking engagements, and during a break in his busy schedule, he was captured wearing a hat of the now New Orleans Pelicans.

Jason Gallagher of Baller.com spotted his holiness on Friday and posted a picture of him wearing the soon-to-be familiar red, blue and gold of the Pelicans to his Twitter page.

Now, maybe while he is in town, the Dalai Lama could bless the Pelicans chances of jumping up a few picks in the upcoming NBA lottery draft.

He might be a fan of the Pelicans, but there has been no confirmation if the Dalai Lama is a fan of Anthony Davis' unibrow.

Did the NBA find a new worst nickname in the New Orleans Pelicans?

Posted on Pattison Ave. this morning: "The team formerly known as the New Orleans Hornets is comprised of a young, athletic, up-and-coming core. Anthony Davis, Xavier Henry, Eric Gordon, and Austin Rivers highlight a nucleus looking to put New Orleans basketball back on the map. With both eyes clearly focused on the future, the franchise felt that they should use the youth movement to launch a complete re-branding campaign, with a new name and all.The idea wasn’t awful; fan bases can often be re-energized by a new franchise identity, especially if it is meant to represent the entering of a new era. Plus, the city wanted something that was more representative of itself, since New Orleans is not especially known for Hornets, having inherited the name from Charlotte. It all made sense. The organization had the opportunity to come up with an exciting new nickname that encompassed the spirit and energy of the young squad, while serving to intimidate opponents, at least a little.
New Orleans Hornets: Regular Season Review and Awards
By Mike Elworth: Publisher and Owner At Hoopstuff…
Record: 26-56- 14th in West- 26th in NBA
Review: The New Orleans Hornets had another down year and have not yet gotten over the loss of Chris Paul and David West. They do have a superstar caliber power forward in Anthony Davis, who, when healthy, had a very solid rookie season. The soon-to-be runner up for Rookie of the Year, did not dominate like most thought, but he was efficient on offense and showed his immense defensive talents. His performance was a bit underwhelming, but he will most likely have a much improved second season in the NBA and prove to be the franchise player that everyone around the league expects him to be. Eric Gordon was injured for half the season and their max contract “star” struggled horribly with his efficiency, but when healthy, he is one of the best scorers in the NBA, so hopefully he has a bounce back season. Other than their two big name players, ...

Pelicans will consider dealing Eric Gordon

A year ago, Eric Gordon was free agent priority number one for the then-New Orleans Hornets. He did not think so. He wanted out of the Crescent City and signed an offer sheet with Phoenix, warning New Orleans he did not want to return.

The Hornets and Dell Demps ignored that request and matched the Suns' offer, retaining the restricted free agent. Gordon was a bit unhappy, but with a fat, four-year $58.4 million contract, who could complain?

Gordon averaged 17.0 points per game, playing 42 games for the Hornets this year as he recouped form nagging knee injury that knocked him out for most of the 2012 season and half of this past season.

In many ways, Gordon was a professional and played out the season without incident. In other ways, you could sense the discomfort and anger from Gordon (particularly early in the season) that he was still in New Orleans. Some, including Hornets coach Monty Williams, questioned whether Gordon was actually injured to the point where he...

Pelicans GM Doesn’t Rule Out Trading Eric Gordon

Will Eric Gordon be in New Orleans next season?credit: losthatsportsblog.com
At this point, it’s safe to say that Eric Gordon’s tenure in New Orleans has been less than great. After being the main piece to come over to the Hornets/Pelicans in exchange for Chris Paul, Gordon’s time has been dictated by continuing injuries and an inability to put together consistent play.
The organization matched the offer sheet given to Gordon by the Phoenix Suns this offseason, even after the shooting guard seemed to want to leave New Orleans. With Anthony Davis now in town, it appears that Eric Gordon is no longer the perceived cornerstone of the franchise. As a matter of fact, he may not even be in New Orleans next season. Via Nola.com:
With concrete plans to make the team better by next season, New Orleans Pelicans General Manager Dell Demps didn’t rule out the possibility the franchise could trade shooting guard Eric Gordon this summer.
During an end of season news conference Monday at the New Orleans Arena, Demps

Hornets see promise in Pelicans era

Less than 24 hours had passed since the Hornets' season-ending loss at Dallas and already the franchise was announcing its formal conversion Thursday to its new ''Pelicans'' name, logo and color scheme of blue, gold and red.

After a 27-win 2012-13 campaign that was better than only four other teams in the NBA, the organization was understandably eager to adopt a new identity.

How long it takes for the club to acquire a winning identity remains to be seen.

''It's obvious that this whole season has been tough for all of us,'' point guard Greivis Vasquez said. ''Next year, there's not going to be excuses for us. We'll be a more experienced team, and hopefully our season next year is a lot better than this one.''

There have been some encouraging signs, starting with the play Anthony Davis.

The top overall draft choice in 2012 averaged 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and nearly two blocks in his rookie season. His numerous highlight-reel dunks and bloc

Davis to sit rest of Hornets season

The New Orleans Hornets say they will sit overall top draft choice Anthony Davis for their final three games because of his left knee injury.

The 6-foot-10 rookie forward was hurt when he collided with Marcus Thornton during the fourth quarter of Wednesday night's loss at Sacramento.

The Hornets say Davis was diagnosed Thursday with a sprained medial collateral ligament and bone bruise in his knee and that further evaluation and an MRI showed no additional structural damage.

Davis has averaged 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 28.8 minutes per game this season.

Davis eating pizza to bulk up?

Anthony Davis is certainly one of the thinner big men around the NBA.credit: http://sports.yahoo.com Rookie Anthony Davis is having a pretty solid season for the New Orleans Hornets after being selected with the number one overall pick. The former Kentucky Wildcat is averaging 13.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game in 28.6 minutes of action. He hasn’t been terribly flashy, but he has been more or less what people had expected. One concern about Anthony Davis is his weight. He was very thin coming into the league, and still is. For a big man, many felt he would have to bulk up a little to handle the physicality of the NBA. So, he has decided to take the advice and bulk up a little. One way he’s doing so? Pizza. And a lot of it. Via Marc Spears: New Orleans offers some of the world’s most renowned restaurants like Emeril’s, Commander’s Palace and Herbsaint. So what dish has Hornets rookie Anthony Davis fallen in love with since arriving to the Crescent City? Pizza. Specifically from the ci

Anthony Davis bulking up eating pizza

Anthony Davis is living every little boy's dream. He plays in the NBA and makes millions of dollars, he (probably) dates Topanga or something, and he subsists of a diet mainly comprising pizza.

Yeah, it's true. The New Orleans Hornets rookie forward is too skinny, so he's just eating gobs and gobs of pizza to bulk up. Enter a story from Yahoo!'s Marc Spears.

"He eats pizza, man. Its like if anyone says, 'P I' and then, 'Pizza,' he perks up," Hornets coach Monty Williams told Spears. This dude has this fascination with pizza. Its unreal."

The story goes on to detail in instance in which it was clear to the Hornets that Bulls forward Carlos Boozer was basically trying to hurt Davis by bowling into him on every play. Davis, the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft, is an unusually agile player for a 6-10 rim protector. He partly owes this to a high school career spent playing guard before an enormous late growth spurt. But perhaps because of this his body hasn't qu

Anthony Davis' unibrow now a commercial star

It was about this time last year where Anthony Davis firmly took his place in the national spotlight.

But during his impressive March Madness run with Kentucky, it was Davis' trademark unibrow that became a national phenomenon.

And now, as March Madness kicks off again, the young New Orleans Hornets center has found a way to put his unibrow to work.

If you've ever wanted to see a unibrow talk, well, now you can, thanks to the folks at Boost Mobile.

The spot features the new NBA Game Time app, but it's very hard to notice anything outside the dancing eyebrow.

You can bet that this won't be the last time we see unibrow in an endorsement if Davis continues to improve off his impressive rookie season.

Anthony Davis' unibrow featured in commercial

I’m actually surprised it took this long for Anthony Davis’ unibrow to break its silence. “The Brow,” which has to be the most talked about facial feature in North America, has taken on a life of its own after the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft starred for the University of Kentucky last year. Well, Boost Mobile has decided to give it a voice of its own in a commercial that can only be described as slightly disturbing. Check it out here: H/T to Dan Devine of Yahoo Sports for the video.
