Bob Huggins Lands Transfer Jonathan Holton For Next Season

URI
West Virginia men’s basketball head coach Bob Huggins added another member to his 2013 recruiting class this week.
Jonathan Holton, a 6-foot-9 power forward who was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference all-rookie team in 2012, has experience playing for Rhode Island and Palm Beach State Community College.
While at URI, Holton averaged 10.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. His future came into question when he was arrested after his freshman season in March 2012 following two charges of video voyeurism. Holton allegedly videotaped consensual sex with two students. He then allegedly later put the material on Facebook, much to the disapproval of those involved. Two days following Holton’s arrest, police found out that a computer in his possession was reported stolen in a dorm at URI following the whole incident.
In his lone season at URI, Holton started 26 games and was fourth in the A-10 in rebounding. At Palm Beach State Community College, he averaged 19 points and 18 rebounds.

Three West Virginia Players To Transfer, Questions Lie Ahead

wvusports.com
If you thought West Virginia’s basketball program was already having a tough year, things got much worse on Monday afternoon.
And no, it wasn’t an April Fools joke either.
Sophomore guards Jabarie Hinds and Aaron Brown and sophomore forward Volodymyr Gerun all plan to transfer, according to head coach Bob Huggins.
Hinds, a 5-foot-11 player out of Mount Vernon, N.Y. and the most notable of the three guys, saw action in all 32 games this past season. The move comes as quite a surprise to WVU and its fans.
It appears that some members of this year’s team didn’t like the playing time they received and felt like they could do better elsewhere.

Aaron Brown on #WVU future: “I expect great things because those players I left behind were like brothers. I know what they’re capable of.”

West Virginia’s Players Respond To Deniz Kilicli’s Comments On Twitter

With West Virginia senior forward/center Deniz Kilicli’s earlier comments about how this year’s WVU men’s basketball team consisted of ‘prima donnas’ and ‘guys who didn’t work hard,’ it was safe to assume that some players would react negatively and respond on Twitter.
That’s indeed what happened.
While some players didn’t want to respond to engage in any negative publicity, others had a different mindset on the matter. Aaric Murray and Keaton Miles took to the social media platform with this to say:

Deniz Kilicli Says Some WVU Players Were “Prima Donnas” In Tell-All Interview

wvusports.com
We’re starting to get some insight into why the 2012-2013 West Virginia men’s basketball team had a disappointing season.
The Mountaineers were unable to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, the NIT and the CBI with a 13-19 record overall and abysmal 6-12 Big 12 Conference mark. West Virginia fell in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament to Texas Tech as well.
Senior forward/center Deniz Kilicli went out of his way to state the reason for West Virginia’s problems this year.
In an exclusive interview with WVU reporter Bob Hertzel and a Beckley, W.Va., TV station (WOAY), Kilicli said that this team didn’t work as hard as some of the others that Bob Huggins has coached in the past.
Kilicli went on to say that wearing a WVU uniform is an honor, and playing for the state is something every Mountaineer should take pride in.
The big-bearded senior from Turkey didn’t mention any names in the interview, but he did say there were people on the squad who ‘didn’t want to win’ and w...

WVU, Huggins agree to extension

West Virginia's Bob Huggins has received a contract extension that includes the choice of moving into another role or continuing his basketball coaching duties beyond the 2017-18 season.

Athletic director Oliver Luck said the 59-year-old Huggins will earn $3 million this season, including a base salary of $250,000. The contract runs through 2022-23.

Under the agreement released Wednesday, starting with the 2018-19 season, Huggins can assume a five-year appointment in public relations and development along with other duties assigned by the athletic director at a base salary of $50,000 a year. Or Huggins can choose to continue serving as head coach.

The contract replaces one Huggins signed in 2008.

''We are delighted to have an updated agreement in place that will continue to keep Coach Huggins at WVU for his entire career,'' Luck said in a statement. His passion, caring and love for the University and the state of West Virginia is incredible. We look forward to many more years of succes

WVU AD Luck reworking Bob Huggins' contract

West Virginia is working on a new contract for men's basketball coach Bob Huggins.

Athletic director Oliver Luck said Friday a reworked deal should be completed in the next few months.

In 2008, Huggins signed a contract that pays him at least $20 million in guaranteed income through 2019.

The Mountaineers have gone to the NCAA tournament in each of Huggins' five seasons at his alma mater. He has a 120-56 record there. West Virginia went 19-14 last season and lost to Gonzaga in the second round of the tournament.

The Charleston Daily Mail (http://bit.ly/TcahCK) first reported Luck was reworking the contract.

New league, new challenge for WVU

CANTON, Ohio - Bob Huggins insists moving from the Big East to the Big 12 won't change much for his West Virginia basketball team.

There will be at least a few new faces next season as Kevin Jones is headed to the NBA, and two highly-regarded transfers will become eligible after sitting out last year to NCAA rules. But the biggest change might be in the frequent-flyer miles the Mountaineers rack up.

A whole lot of them.

Gone -- for now, anyway -- is the Mountaineers' backyard rivalry with Pitt, a game that's been played every year since 1913. Gone, too, are longtime series with recognizable -- and driveable -- foes like Syracuse, Villanova, Cincinnati and Georgetown.

Huggins said his team's Closest geographic rival in the Big 12 "is 863 air miles away" at Iowa State.

"The hard thing is they each come to us once, but we make those long trips nine times," Huggins said. "There's a time-zone change involved. We'll have to get used to it.

West Virginia 87, Providence 84

Darryl Bryant's 3-pointer with just over a second left in overtime gave West Virginia an 87-84 win over Providence on Sunday.

The two teams exchanged leads throughout the extra period, and Providence's Gerard Coleman made 1 of 2 free throws to tie it at 84-all with 10 seconds left. Bryant then drove down the court and hit the game-winner.

Bryant led the Mountaineers (16-8, 6-5 Big East) with 32 points, and Deniz Kilicli added a career-high 22.

Providence (13-11, 2-9) got off to a hot start, making 16 of 18 from the field. But West Virginia put together a 12-3 run at the end of the first half to make 42-36 at halftime.

West Virginia trailed 70-63 with 5:29 left in regulation and scored six straight, including four by Bryant.

Coleman scored 29 points to lead the Friars, who lost their eighth straight to West Virginia.

Kevin Jones led scored 22 points and West Virginia routed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 84-64 Saturday.

Darryl ''Truck'' Bryant added 14 points and Deniz Kilicli scored 13 for the Mountaineers (7-2).

Jones and Kilicli were particularly impressive in the second half when Jones scored 18 and Kilicli 11. Jones was held out with two fouls for most of the first half, while Kilicli's first-half bench time was based on a coach's decision.

With Jones and Kilicli combining to play just 11 minutes in the first half, Corpus Christi kept it close. It trailed 32-28 at the break.

Jones, however, was in the lineup as the second half started, and he made the most of it.

Chris Hawkins-Mast had 22 points and Terence Jones added 20 for the Islanders (1-7).

After a 3 by Terrence Jones pulled Texas A&M-Corpus Christi within four, 35-31, with 18:31 remaining, WVU scored 11 straight.
