Let's nix the ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Kevlar, anyone?

The matchups for the ACC/Big Ten challenge were announced on Tax Day this past week. North Carolina will travel to Motown on December 3, 2008, to play the Michigan State Spartans. Ah, there's nothing quite like Detroit in December. The snow. The decorative lights. The hail of bullets…

The Shot Heard Around The World... Minnesota Style!

Turns out Blake Hoffarber can make history standing up, too.

The new undisputed Mr. Big Shot of March made himself a candidate for a second career ESPY late Friday night in Conseco Field House, at age 19. The Minnesota freshman won an ESPY in 2005 for hitting a game-tying shot from his backside in the Minnesota state high school championship game. Now, standing on his own two feet, he's put the Gophers in the Big Ten tournament semifinals and back into NCAA tournament contention with another shot worthy of an ESPY nom this summer.

Free Eric Gordon

In knocking of the Indiana Hoosiers, the Minnesota Golden Gophers overcame a referee corps that did everything in its power to get the home state team to Saturday, the continued absence of Spencer Tollackson, and another monstrous double-double from D.J. White in notching what constitutes the first signature win of the Tubby era in the Twin Minny.

A Perfect Offense - Bo Ryan's Swing

In a season that finds them once again atop the Big Ten heap after securing their fifth consecutive victory with a 57-42 win over Michigan State (22-6, 10-5), the Wisconsn Badgers have demonstrated the efficiency and power of team basketball as well as what may be a perfect offense.

The Sky is Falling...Again

Looking at RPIs, won-loss records, individual games, and the ACC-Big Ten challenge in isolation is a trap that fails to account for the season as a five-month growing medium. The best coaches, of which the Big Ten has a deep roster, can take roster shake-ups, Wofford losses, and 36-point offensive nights and turn them, via months of good teaching, into basketball gold.

A Moment in Ann Arbor

John Beilein's Michigan Wolverines (8-17, 4-9) proudly possess a three game winning streak and have evolved, through a season of defeats, into the best eight win team in the Country. For a basketball program that remarkably hasn't been to an NCAA Tournament since 1998, Beilein's victory over Ohio State marks what many Blue faithful recognize as the turning point.
