Missouri Basketball: Meet new power forward Torren Jones

Like most of the top recruits that the University of Missouri has signed for the incoming season, Torren Jones signed to be a Tiger on October 21, 2012, before his senior season. Jones is a 6-7 power forward that will add size to one of the top rebounding teams in the nation last season.

Jones plays as a man among boys. He has big length and, like a Laurence Bowers, he can finish with a number a powerful dunks, especially in transition. And something I like to see from old school basketball videos, Jones possesses a jump hook that he can hit near the basket. Jones, since he has good length, he can turn into a rebounding machine.

According to scouting reports, Jones struggles when double-teamed or when the area around the paint becomes congested. He needs to become more of a lateral player to become successful in the NCAA.

The best part about Jones is now he adds depth to a front court that will need to rebuild, a little bit. By the looks of it, Jones is pretty raw and Mizzou head...

Missouri Basketball: Meet new point guard Wes Clark

With no more Phil Pressey running the show in Columbia, the Missouri Tigers basketball team and head coach Frank Haith will be looking for a new point guard next season and they need to look no further than Wes Clark. Clark signed on August 29, 2012 before the start of his senior season and was brought in as the successor of Pressey after he graduated in 2014.

But, Pressey left school early for the NBA and Negus Webster-Chan has transfered and now Clark may be thrown into the rotation immediately. Clark is the second ESPN100 player to sign with Mizzou, along with Johnathan Williams III.

Clark is the prototypical floor general. He has a high basketball I.Q. and can be a coach on the court. He has the vision like Pressey and can push the ball on the break. Clark works hard on both ends of the floor and will work until he is taken out of the ballgame.

Maybe, his only weaknesses could be that he needs to be more consistant from outside the arc and getting a little bigger because, at ...

Report: Baylor Transfer Deuce Bello Heading To Missouri

Mizzou basketball landed yet another big name transfer today with the addition of former Baylor forward Deuce Bello. Terez Paylor confirmed the news on Twitter today.

Just got off the phone with former Baylor SF Deuce Bello. As @gabedearmond first reported, Bello has decided to transfer to #Mizzou.
— Terez A. Paylor (@TerezPaylor) May 20, 2013
Bello will have to sit out next year before he is eligible to play for the 2014-15 season. Tigers coach Frank Haith will most likely look for an immediate impact out of Bello, who was a four-star prospect and ranked as one of the top forwards in the nation coming out of high school.
Bello was never able to become much of a contributor with the Bears, averaging just over 10 minutes per game in his first two seasons. He committed to Baylor along with his high school teammate Quincy Miller, but it was Miller who became a star, not Bello. At the end of this past season, Bello decided to transfer to a school where he could get more playing time. I...

Mizzou Monday: Pressey at the NBA Combine

The 2013 NBA Combine came to its close Sunday, and the results for former Mizzou point guard Phil Pressey are in.

Pressey, who has decided to pass on his senior season as a Tiger to chase his NBA dream, was dissected in every which way.

Here's how he measured up.

Pressey stood 5 foot 9 12 inches without his shoes on. That tied former Baylor point guard Pierre Jackson as the shortest in the 63-player group. Just five players were shorter than 6 feet. Pressey was also the fifth-lightest player at the combine, weighing 177 pounds. His wingspan (6-2 14) and reach (7-8) were the third-shortest of those measured.

Pressey's standing vertical jump measured 33 inches, which placed him in a four-way tie for seventh-best at the combine. His maximum vertical was 38 12 inches, which tied for 11th-best. He finished in the middle of the pack in the lane agility test a drill that times how fast players move around the key but roasted most combine participants in the sprint. Pressey ran three quarters of the ba

Mizzou's Oriakhi denied invite to NBA combine

ST. LOUIS Did Alex Oriakhi get snubbed?

The list of players invited to this year's NBA combine dropped Thursday, and some names of interest to the St. Louis area are included in the crop of ballers who will show off for NBA scouts in Chicago from May 15-19.

Missouri natives Ben McLemore (Kansas guard), Otto Porter (Georgetown small forward) and BJ Young (Arkansas guard) made the cut, as did Mizzou guard Phil Pressey and Illinois guard Brandon Paul.

But one name that might have made the list Oriakhi was nowhere to be found.

The Mizzou center who transferred from Connecticut before his senior season shot 63.9 percent from the field and averaged 11.2 points and 8.4 rebounds for the Tigers this year.

At 6-foot-9, 240-pounds, he is a bit undersized for his position. Still, an argument could be made that his strength, rebounding and offensive efficiency could have qualified him for a combine nod especially since this year's draft c

Haith adds to nationally ranked recruiting class

ST. LOUIS - The Missouri basketball team on Monday announced the signing of Shane Rector, a 6-foot, 175 pound point guard from South Kent School in South, Kent, Conn.

Rector, who is originally from New York, averaged 17.4 points and 7.1 assists for South Kent as a senior.

We are so excited to be able to add a player of Shanes caliber to our recruiting class and his ability to attack the rim and create for his teammates fits well with how we like to play, Mizzou coach Frank Haith said. Shane is also a capable scorer, but he is similar to Wes (Clark) in that he has a knack for making those around him better and thats what we want in our point guards.

Rector is the fifth addition to Haith's four-member signing class of Wes Clark, Torren Jones, Jonathan Williams and Keanau Post. The class is considered to be among the Top-20 in the country.

Rector is an obvious potential replacement for former Missouri point guard Phil Pressey, who has declared for the NBA Draft and signed with an agent since his junior

Former Tiger Webster-Chan transfers to Hawaii

Former Missouri men's basketball guard Negus Webster-Chan has committed to play basketball at the University of Hawaii, according to report by the Honolulu Star Advertiser.

Webster-Chan, a 6-foot-7 reserve who recently finished his first season at Missouri, said his reasons for transferring from Mizzou included a desire for more playing time and a wish to be closer to his home, Scarborough, Ontario.

"I just felt this was the right fit for me where I could succeed better, coming to Hawaii and playing for this coaching staff," Webster-Chan told the Star Advertiser.

Webster-Chan must sit out the 2013-14 season, then will have three years of eligibility. He averaged 2.5 points, 2 rebounds and 15.5 minutes per game as a freshman at Mizzou.

Missouri men's basketball junior point guard Phil Pressey will forego his senior season and enter the 2013 NBA Draft, Mizzou announced Wednesday morning. Pressey has signed with CAA Sports (Creative Artists Agency).

"Many college basketball players dream of this day, but when I had to finally make this decision it was difficult because it means I am leaving a place I love so much," Pressey said in a release. "I love my teammates, my coaches, Missouri athletic director Mike Alden and all of our fans, and I'm so glad I had the chance to play for Coach Haith these last two years."

Missouri coach Frank Haith was also quoted in the release.

"It's a bittersweet day, because we all care so much about Phil, but I know how much research he and his family have done, and I support that 100 percent," Haith said. "I was fortunate in that I had the opportunity to coach Phil for two seasons, and he helped us win a lot of games, but more importantly, he was a great ambassador

Webster-Chan, Bull to transfer from Mizzou

The Missouri men's basketball team announced Tuesday that two reserve guards Dominque Bull and Negus Webster-Chan will transfer from the school.

A release said the two players who recently finished their freshmen seasons will look for teams closer to home that can provide more playing time.

Webster-Chan, a 6-foot-7 combo guard rom Scarbrough, Ontario, averaged 2.5 points and two rebounds per game for the Tigers this season. He started six games, averaged 15.5 minutes per game and played more than 20 minutes 12 times.

I appreciate everyone at Missouri and want to thank Coach Haith and the staff for giving me this opportunity, Webster-Chan said in the release. I just want to find a style that is more suited for me, but I wish Mizzou the best of luck in the future and Im grateful to the Tiger community for their support over the past year.

Bull, a 6-foot-4 guard from Worcester, Mass., appeared in eight games this season, but played more than one minute just twice.

I enjoyed my time as a Missouri Tiger

Top 10 players: SEC

Phil Pressey PG Missouri- 10.3pts 3.4 ast. Pressey was surrounded by a lot of guard talent last year. There is still some talent, but the backcourt will be his, and he’s got the game to handle it.
Kenny Boynton SG Florida- 15.5pts. 2.7ast. Boynton hasn’t quite lived up to the immense hype that surrounded him entering college. He makes some poor decisions and shoots a bit too much, but the talent is clearly there for him to be special.
Marshawn Powell PF Arkansas- 19.5pts. 6.0reb. Powell is a powerful forward that can dominate down low. If he gets you on the block it’s almost certain he’s going to score. Could be a rare 20-10 guy this season.
B.J. Young SG Arkansas- 15.3pts. 3.1reb. Young was impressive as a freshman last year, and will look to build on that this season. He’s a good shooter and great slasher that always seems to find a way to put the ball in the bucket.
Jeronne Maymon PF Tennessee- 12.7pts 8.1ast. Maymon was absolutely dominant at times...

One of the hottest names of July’s evaluation period was Wesley Clark, a 6-0 point guard from Romulus (MI). He stood out at the LeBron James Skills Academy, and continued his strong play throughout the month for his Michigan-based AAU team, The Family. Following his stellar performances, Clark became a consensus top-100 recruiting nationally. On [...]

Mizzou G wins Big 12, wears SEC shirt

University of Missouri guard turned power forward Kim English had a monster Big 12 Conference Tournament and took home the most valuable player honors in the tournament held in Kansas City. English followed up a 27 point performance in the first round of the tournament against Oklahoma State and a 23 point outburst against Texas with another 19 points in helping to lead Mizzou to their second Big 12 Conference Tournament Championship in four years with a 90-75 win over Baylor. English, who is never shy when it comes to social media, celebrated afterwards with his teammates. But English celebrated a little bit differently. English recognized Mizzou's current and now past affiliation with the Big 12 while also recognizing Mizzou's future home in the SEC by holding up the Big 12 Tournament Championship trophy outside of the Sprint Center in Kansas City while wearing an SEC shirt.
I had a blast in the Big 12 the last 4 years. But my loyalty lies with my University!!!!!!!...

Missouri moving on from loss to Kansas

COLUMBIA, Mo. The loss to Kansas will not linger. After No. 7 Missouri completed its night of recovery with a 78-72 victory over NCAA Tournament-worthy Iowa State, senior guard Kim English stood near mid-court with a final request for what was left of the home crowd.

It was minutes after his last game at Mizzou Arena, just four days after he lived one of his career's most painful defeats. A one-point overtime loss Saturday to then-No. 4 Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse cost the Tigers a chance at their first Big 12 Conference regular-season title, a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and an opportunity to sweep their bitter rivals for the first time since 1994.

But Wednesday, life moved on for English and the rest of a Tigers squad that remains a threat to win the Big 12 Tournament for the second time in program history and advance deep in the NCAA Tournament. As he turned toward the student section near the end of his farewell address, English wanted the scattered remains of the 14,837 in attendance wearing

Denmon earns Big 12 honor

COLUMBIA, Mo. Mizzou senior guard Marcus Denmon (Kansas City, Mo.), on the heels of one of the greatest individual performances in school history on Saturday, was named Big 12 Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday (Feb. 6). This marks the third career Big 12 weekly honor for Denmon after he earned the award twice last season.

Denmon averaged 17.5 total points and 7.0 rebounds per game last week, but it was his performance against No. 8 Kansas on Saturday that helped him earn his third career Big 12 Player of the Week honor. The senior guard exploded for 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including a blistering 6-of-9 mark from distance. He scored nine consecutive points (a three-point play and two 3-pointers) in a span of 1:12 to bring the Tigers from down eight points to up one with just under a minute remaining as he sparked an 11-0 run by the Tigers to close the game, sealing the win for Mizzou.

The 29-point outing was his second-best career total and the 24th time that he has sco
