Marcus Smart headlines Team USA U19

via CBS Sports

Despite being a lock for the lottery and even in the Top 5, Marcus Smart did not join this year’s draft. He wanted to make another run with Oklahoma State. It certainly wasn’t to improve his draft stock, as next year’s draft is much stronger.
His choice has opened up an opportunity to play for the Star Spangled Banner. He is perhaps the most talented player under 19. His role is also important as the stars of the 2014 class, the top college recruits like Jabari Parker, Julius Randle and the Harrison twins opted not to join the team. Smart will have his hands full, especially with Canada headlined by Andrew Wiggins, next year’s probable No.1 pick.

Report: Marcus Smart’s Bad Wrist Led Him Back To Oklahoma State

okstate.com
Many wondered how Oklahoma State shooting guard Marcus Smart could turn down millions of dollars and the potential to be the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.
Now we know.
Smart is at the USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Championship training camp in Colorado where he talked to FOXsports.com college hoops writer Reid Forgrave.

Great talk w @smart_MS3 on why return to Ok St. End season left bad taste…but also hurt wrist in NCAAs, couldn’t lift ball til May.
— Reid Forgrave (@ReidForgrave) June 16, 2013

If Marcus Smart’s wrist healthy, probably going to NBA, he told me. But pumped 1 more year college: “I get to be a kid for 1 more year.”
— Reid Forgrave (@ReidForgrave) June 16, 2013
Guess the Cowboys being ousted in the first round of the NCAA Tournament was a blessing in disguise.
Last season, Smart put OSU basketball back on the map. After winning both the Big 12 Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors and being named an second-team All-American by the AP, Smart w...

Was Marcus really smart? One, not done in OSU

via Grantland

The NBA is every player’s ultimate dream. The money, fame and lifestyle of NBA players are definitely something to aspire for. It’s not surprising that each player would quickly jump in once the opportunity presents itself. In most cases, many players have jumped too early. This will lead to getting a low draft place, a dismal career or a personal breakdown.

By all indications, OSU’s star freshman was at least a lottery pick. Thus, his decision to forego the draft left many people perplexed.

I am aware of how much money I am giving up. I am aware of that.
— Marcus Smart

That was my favorite quote from Wednesday’s Oklahoma State press conference, in which the freshman point guard, along with teammates Markel Brown and Le’Bryan Nash, announced that he would be returning to the Cowboys next season.

OSU's Smart not worried about the money?

The strangest thing Marcus Smart said when he announced he would forego the NBA draft and take his talents back to Stillwater was at the end of his explanation.

"I'm aware of how much money I'm giving up," he said.

A strange business decision for a guy whose business is basketball.

Assuming Smart, who won Big 12 player of the year honors as a freshman at Oklahoma State, leaves after his sophomore season, he will have cost himself around 2 million. He was projected as a high lottery pick, and the NBA's rookie pay scale pays pays the No. 5 pick 2.9 million and slides down to 1.8 million for the 10th pick, 1.4 million for the 15th pick, and so on. Any sports agent alive would have advised Smart to declare, and most players in his position would already be fitted for their weird NBA draft suit.

But there is another consideration too, one that's is often difficult for teenage basketball stars to see. The first NBA contract will make you rich, but it's the second and third cont

Smart returning for sophomore year

Bucking the one-and-done trend across college basketball, Big 12 player of the year Marcus Smart announced Wednesday he will return for his sophomore season at Oklahoma State with a team that will be loaded with professional prospects.

Proclaiming he's a ''Cowboy at heart,'' Smart said he made his decision after consulting with his family and praying on it, and knowing fully what he could be passing up by skipping this chance to enter the NBA Draft as a likely top-five pick.

''There's a lot of speculation going. I've been bashed and criticized that I probably made a mistake of coming back here, the NBA will be there, I should have took it, and this year's draft class is much weaker than next year's,'' said Smart, who led the Cowboys by averaging 15.4 points and 4.2 assists last season.

''But I think I made the right decision,'' he said. ''All that was telling me, from those people that said that, is they don't have confidence i

Report: Smart staying at OK St.

At least one prominent college basketball star seems to remember the old public service message to “Be Cool: Stay In School.” Oklahoma State freshman guard Marcus Smart, considered by anyone I’ve ever paid attention to to be a Top 5 pick in this year’s NBA draft, is expected to formally announce he will be returning to school in a press conference to be held at the student union on Wednesday afternoon. The setting — which will also be open to the public — seems to be as much a confirmation that he’ll have something to say that Cowboy fans will want to hear as the story from Yahoo Sports NBA columnist Adrian Wojnarowski. On first glance, such a decision might be seen as a move to improve his chances at being the top pick in next year’s draft. However, next year’s class, headlined by Canadian sensation Andrew Wiggins, is expected to be much deeper than the current crop. Even if he improves his game, there is a chance that Smart will be picked no higher than he would have been this ...

Oklahoma State point guard Marcus Smart was expected to announce whether he'll return for another season with the Cowboys or enter the NBA draft at a news conference Wednesday.

Yahoo! Sports cited anonymous sources Tuesday night in reporting that Smart had decided to return for his sophomore season.

Smart was chosen as the Big 12 player of the year and freshman of the year after averaging a team-best 15.4 points and 4.2 assists while leading the Cowboys to the NCAA tournament. Oklahoma State went 24-9 and lost to Oregon in its NCAA tournament opener.

Smart is considered a likely top-five pick in the NBA draft if he chooses to leave early.

LAWRENCE, Kan. Everybody wanted a piece. Could you sign this? Could we take a quick picture? It took ages to get back to the locker room; another step, another handshake, another pen. Wave after wave, autograph-seekers and well-wishers, bowing to the freshman with the killer smile. One long, last look before the kid takes his talents to South Beach and beyond.

Except here's the surreal part: It wasn't Ben McLemore. This was Marcus Smart, head to toe in Oklahoma State neon orange, taking the victory lap, riding the red carpet down Naismith Drive.

"Oh, it was crazy," Smart, the Cowboys' 6-foot-4 rock, chuckled after helping to engineer an 85-80 upset of No. 2 Kansas, the program's first win at Allen Fieldhouse since 1989. "I knew, coming into this type of environment I knew it was going to be very hostile."

They hissed. And booed. And snarled. And cursed. Smart kept beaming; kept grabbing offensive rebounds (eight in all, and a total of nine boards on the day); kept hara

Video: Oklahoma State's Markel Brown converts 360 alley oop dunk

A regular alley oop is hard enough to execute. It requires impeccable timing, coordination, and of course the ability to sky above the rim. What Oklahoma State's Markel Brown did on Saturday certainly exceeded those expectations.Seen here is Brown converting an alley oops while contorting his body 360 degrees in the process. Very nice indeed. The Cowboys obliterated visiting Tennessee Tech, 78-42, to improve to 10-1 on the campaign.Via Big Lead Sports.

Five reasons the Oklahoma State Cowboys are riding high

The Oklahoma State Cowboys won the Puerto Rico Shootout over then-No. 6 North Carolina State, 76-56, last weekend and picked up where they left off on Sunday with an impressive 81-58 victory over Portland State. The Cowboys have restructured their chemistry and cruised like most thought they would on Sunday. The key is that after a three-game tournament and with a week off, the team didn’t seem to struggle in shooting 57.1% from the floor and jumping to an 18-point halftime lead.
Travis Ford and the Cowboys could be a surprise team in the Big 12 as they are developing chemistry around sophomore Le’Bryan Nash. (Credit: Oklahoma State Marketing)
The following are five quick reasons why the Cowboys are off to a 5-0 start and could be a major factor in the Big 12 this season:
1.) Junior guard Markel Brown calls it the “Brotherhood” approach. Most teams call it “team basketball”. Brown noted that OSU plays really well together and that was a norm in Puerto Rico when they were able t...

OK-State's Williams found guilty

A suspended Oklahoma State basketball player was convicted of sexual battery and rape by instrumentation on Monday night, but jurors acquitted him on two other counts related to two women's accusations that he sexually assaulted them at a house party.

Darrell Williams broke down in tears as the verdicts were read, saying "Oh my Jesus God" as he bent over the defense table. Others in the packed courtroom, including several of his teammates, immediately left, and an extremely emotional female relative was lead out as Williams was taken away by sheriff's deputies.

The 22-year-old was charged with four counts of rape by instrumentation, but was acquitted on two of those counts. The jury recommended that he be sentenced to a year in prison for each of the rape counts, though his formal sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 24.

Payne County prosecutors accused Williams of groping the two women and reaching inside their pants without their consent. Both of the women testified during the trial, saying

Ok. St. guard ejected after dunk

Oklahoma State beat No. 2 Missouri 79-72 tonight and the fans rushed the court. While this was a big upset, the end result may be overshadowed by Markel Brown’s vicious alley-oop dunk followed by stare-down followed by ejection.
Brown was already carrying a technical foul before the post-dunk “unsportsmanlike conduct,” leading to his dismissal. If you’re going to get ejected, this is definitely the ideal way to go out.
