Suns Targeting Athleticism, Perimeter Shooting

The Phoenix Suns will pick fifth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft, their highest selection since 1987 when they selected Armen Gilliam at No. 2 after David Robinson went to the San Antonio Spurs.
The draft is considered very flat, which benefits the Suns at No. 5 more than certain seasons in the past.
“The guy who goes there might not be much different, or any different, than guys who go in the top three,” McDonough said.
The Suns will be the first team from the Western Conference selecting in this draft.
“I think generally we need to get more athletic,” Ryan McDonough said. “I think we need more shooting. My philosophy is always to draft the best available player. There are some good pieces in place here. But at the same time, we won 25 games here, so we need to get better across the board.”

On Monday, Ed wrote a nostalgic piece on Shawn Kemp and the Seattle Supersonics taking on Charles Barkley and Phoenix Suns 20 years ago in a Western Conference Finals for the ages. As I’m sure you all know, those 1993 Sonics were coached by none other than current Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl.
With fifth pick, can Suns find their next star?

PHOENIX Now that the Phoenix Suns have converted 57 losses into the fifth overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, lets jump ahead to the next crucial question.

Will the player they select at No. 5 provide sufficient help to prevent them from landing in this predicament next season?

Well, based on the anticipated bounty that could be available in 2014, many Suns fans wouldn't mind the team having another early lottery pick next year. But while many draft watchdogs expect little from the 2013 yield, Suns general manager Ryan McDonough seems to have no interest in doomsday prophecy.

I think that in every draft, there a few star players, McDonough said Tuesday shortly after the fourth-seeded Suns officially dropped to fifth in the draft pecking order via the lottery. At the end of the day, Im confident well get somebody good.

Although McDonoughs observations hold up pretty well when scrutiny is applied to draft history, identifying those few star players may be trickier this year.

Suns get fifth pick as Cavs win NBA draft lottery

NEW YORK (AP) -- Nick Gilbert and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the NBA lottery odds again. The Cavaliers won the lottery for the second time in three years to get the No. 1 pick for the June 27 draft.

Gilbert, owner Dan Gilbert's bowtie-wearing son, was on stage again for the victory. He also was there in 2011, when the Cavs won the top pick they used on eventual Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving.

The Orlando Magic fell back one spot to No. 2, while the Washington Wizards vaulted from the No. 8 spot to third. The Charlotte Bobcats will have the fourth pick, while the Phoenix Suns will select fifth.

What Each NBA Team Needs - Suns

As the field for the NBA Finals is now down to 4 (Indiana, Miami, SAS, Memphis), the hopes and dreams of the other 26 teams have faded quickly. Some of them (Clippers, Knicks, Nuggets, OKC) left the playoffs too early, some of them (Lakers, Brooklyn) never materialized what they thought was a great team, and others (Minnesota, Philadelphia) were hit by the injury bug and never got to see their team perform at expectations. So as 4 teams compete for the ultimate goal, let’s go over what each team needs, in order to reach the conference finals next year. We’re going to go over a few teams each week as we approach the NBA draft.

Suns hope for lottery luck, but it's not a necessity

NBA followers obsessed with the most easily imagined form of roster upgrading have staggered their way to Draft Lottery Eve.

So, with the Ping-Pong balls warming up, do you know where your team is?

If youre a fan of the Phoenix Suns, you probably know that your team enters Tuesdays talent-acquisition-positioning party as the fourth overall seed. The Suns are rolling in on the battered wings of the second-worst season in team history, and they are offering president of basketball operations Lon Babby as the TV face of the franchise at the actual event in New York.

With Kentucky center Nerlens Noel and Kansas guard Ben McLemore looming as possible choices with the first pick, perhaps Babby will attempt to manufacture some good fortune Monday night by retiring to his room at 11:09 p.m. At fourth in the Ping-Pong pecking order, the Suns have an 11.9 percent chance of rising to No. 1.

But if they end up at four, a quartet of national draft-oriented websites predict theyll select a player from Indiana. Three of

Kendall Marshall Ribbed by Flight Attendant for Carrying Basketball Onto Airplane

Kendall Marshall is the type who brings his work home with him. Since his work is playing basketball, that is not entirely a bad thing, but it does leave him open to some ribbing every once in a while.
Marshall, who recently finished off his rookie season with the Phoenix Suns, often carries a basketball around with him even when he is not headed to practice or a game. When he brought a ball with him onto an airplane, a flight attendant either tried to mock him or did not realize how glib they sounded by telling Marshall that their 4-year-old nephew does the same thing.
flight attendant - "my nephew takes his basketball everywhere he goes too. He's four." uhh am I supposed to stop bc I'm 21? lol— Kendall Marshall (@KButter5) May 15, 2013
Burn. Well, at least dribbling up and down those skinny aisles will be good practice for driving through multiple defenders to get to the hoop.

Suns' coaching search long on names, short on experience

Were less than a week into the Ryan McDonough Experience, and the hullabaloo generated when the Phoenix Suns new general manager arrived has surrendered to the cacophony of crickets.

With the coaching search now in the crosshairs of McDonough and his new bosses, there has been little speculation local, regional or national regarding names on a favorites list. That doesnt mean the Suns arent working feverishly to find the right guy; theyre just keeping it relatively quiet.

A week ago, the Suns alleged short roster of candidates, according to various repots, included the names Kelvin Sampson, Quin Snyder, Mike Budenholzer, Jeff Hornacek and Brian Shaw.

Not one guy with NBA head coaching experience in that lineup. How should we know which of these sharpies all of whom have been mentioned as candidates for other league vacancies would be the best fit without a track record? Well get back to that.

First, where has this presumably exhaustive search gone in the last few days? Well, unlike in the general-mana

Suns GM McDonough sees 'opportunity,' need for talent

PHOENIX He played a little basketball in high school, but he was more of a baseball guy. Hes been putting up impressive hoop numbers as a pro, but most of his work has been accomplished in a uniform that features a coat and tie.

So how can 33-year-old Ryan McDonough register as the most important Phoenix Suns signing in recent years?

Well, since the sport of talent evaluation has jumped over the lines defining a playing surface and into the realm of more comprehensive analysis, general managers are becoming the sidebar superstars in professional sports.

McDonough, whose introductory press conference was held Thursday at US Airways Center, has what could be categorized as front-office upside.

Hes prepared for this all his life, I think, Suns president of basketball operations Lon Babby said. We couldnt be more thrilled or more excited.

That sentiment seems to be widespread among local media watchdogs who understand how crucial the person identifying potentially elite players and coaches can be. In the NB

According to the Phoenix Suns press release, Ryan McDonough was named the Phoenix Suns general manager yesterday. Here are a couple paragraphs from the press release summarizing McDonough: The 33-year-old McDonough is considered one of the game’s brightest young minds, who combines a tireless work ethic with an expertise in player evaluation honed over the …

Report: Suns Forward Michael Beasley Under Investigation for Sexual Assault Allegations

When we wrote earlier on Tuesday that Ryan McDonough has a mess to clean up in Phoenix, this is not what we meant.
As if things could get any worse for the Suns franchise, a report on Tuesday indicates that forward Michael Beasley is under investigation for an alleged sexual assault.
“At this point, we can only say the investigation is ongoing,” Scottsdale, Ariz., police spokesman David Pubins told ABC15. “We are interviewing those involved and processing any physical evidence we may have to try and determine if criminal charges are appropriate.”
Beasley, 24, is a middling player coming off a typically mediocre first season with the Suns. The one-dimensional scorer managed just 10.1 points per game and is unlikely to be moved, since the Suns will find it difficult to find a trade partner that would take Beasley’s baggage for such meager production. Beasley has previous run-ins with the law for marijuana possession, speeding and driving with a suspended license.
Beasley is due to ear...

Cops probing sexual assault claim involving Suns' Beasley

Phoenix Suns forward Michael Beasley is under investigation for an allegation of sexual assault involving an incident on Jan. 13, 2013, Scottsdale Police confirmed Tuesday.

A Scottsdale Police spokesman said the investigation is ongoing as police continue to interview those involved and process evidence to determine whether or not they will files criminal charges against Beasley, 24. Because the investigation remains open, no further details of the incident could be disclosed.

Beasley signed a three-year deal with the Suns last July, and in his first season with the team he averaged 10.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

This is not Beasley's first run in with Scottsdale Police, as he was cited in late January for driving with a suspended license, driving with expired registration, speeding and failure to properly display a license plate on his vehicle.

Bucks' Weltman not named new Suns general manager

The Phoenix Suns have decided on their next general manager, and it isn't Bucks assistant general manager Jeff Weltman.
A finalist for the job, Weltman lost out to 33-year-old Celtics assistant general manager Ryan McDonough. Weltman was a finalist for the Suns' general manager job in 2010, but Lance Blanks was hired instead.
Weltman, 48, will instead return to Milwaukee's front office where he's played an integral role since coming over from Detroit with general manager John Hammond in 2008. Prior to his five seasons as Milwaukee's assistant general manager, Weltman served one season as Detroit's director of basketball administration.
After serving as a video coordinator, scout and as the director of player personnel with the Clippers over 13 years, Weltman spent five seasons (2001-2006) as the assistant general manager under Kiki Vandeweghe in Denver.

Suns moving in new direction, but which way?

The Phoenix Suns have opted to change course a year after losing Steve Nash and finishing in last place in the Western Conference. The organization has been lost in the woods even in those last years with Nash playing point guard, but moving on and moving forward has been difficult. The organization fired coach Alvin Gentry midway through the season after he went 13-28. Now they have fired general manager Lance Blanks, putting Phoenix's future on a path for complete change. The Suns announced that Blanks would be relieved of his duties Monday and that the organization would be moving on from him and likely from his selection for the interim coach Lindsey Hunter. Phoenix will likely have new leaders captaining this ship. It is just the destination that seems so difficult to figure out. Phoenix is in a bad spot right now. A team mixed with veterans and some disappointing young players. A team without a proven star and with a high draft pick in a bad draft (at least at the ...

Marcin Gortat, frustrated by terrible Suns' season, calls out younger players

This past year was a trying one for the Suns, which clearly annoyed Marcin Gortat The Suns were the fourth worst team in the entire NBA in the 2012-13 season, worse than every other Western Conference team but just a little bit better than the Bobcats, Magic and Cavaliers. Playing the team's first games without Steve Nash in years, Phoenix was just a mish-mosh of apt mainstays (like Marcin Gortat and Goran Dragic) and young players trying to find their way (like Wesley Johnson, Kendall Marshall, and Michael Beasley) along with older veterans playing out the end of their careers (like Luis Scola and Jermaine O'Neal). Putting the loss of a long-time franchise player in Nash to a rival team in the Lakers together with the relative lack of talent on the roster, it is not a surprise that the Suns won just 25 games this past season, going just 8-33 on the road. Add in the resignation of head coach Alvin Gentry on January 18 (and the eventual naming of former play...
