NBA does its dead level best to keep Phil Jackson retired

Last week, the NBA Board of Governors, no doubt carrying out strict marching orders from David Stern, voted to block relocation of the Kings from Sacramento to Seattle. In doing so, they also scuttled a potential sale of the Kings to a group led by Chris Hansen. Instead, the Maloof brothers will sell to a group headed by Vivek Ranadive. Tuesday, another penny dropped. Appearing on the Dan Patrick Show, former Bulls and Lakers coach Phil Jackson revealed that a deal was in place for him to take a role in the organization. Per the Seattle Times(13:10 mark of the video: “I had an agreement with the guy that put the deal together for Seattle Chris Hansen,” Jackson said. “I thought he was dynamic. I thought he had great ideas. He went through the whole process of getting an arena. He did everything right except win the franchise. “But his vision I could buy into. I thought he had the right vision for a team. And he made basically the offer of take what you want to take as a job. As a con...

What Each NBA Team Needs starting with the Kings

As the field for the NBA Finals is now down to 4 (Indiana, Miami, SAS, Memphis), the hopes and dreams of the other 26 teams have faded quickly. Some of them (Clippers, Knicks, Nuggets, OKC) left the playoffs too early, some of them (Lakers, Brooklyn) never materialized what they thought was a great team, and others (Minnesota, Philadelphia) were hit by the injury bug and never got to see their team perform at expectations. So as 4 teams compete for the ultimate goal, let’s go over what each team needs, in order to reach the conference finals next year. We’re going to go over a few teams each week as we approach the NBA draft.

Petrie Preparing For Kings' Draft, Hasn't Heard From Ranadive's Group

The Sacramento Kings have been sold to Vivek Ranadive, which makes the status of Geoff Petrie as basketball president an unknown.
Petrie is preparing for the 2013 NBA Draft as though he will still be the Kings' decision-maker. Petrie is signed through the end of June.
"I haven't had the opportunity to talk to anybody yet (from Ranadive's group)," said Petrie. "But my understanding is the sale probably won't officially close for a couple more weeks. How that plays into communication, I really don't know at this point."
The Kings need a point guard and also must plan a strategy for Tyreke Evans' restricted free agency.
"You're closing in on some planning, just structural, ownership-driven involvement that will have to happen in a much more compressed time frame here," Petrie said.

Rain City Hope: Possible expansion for Seattle NBA team

via Seattle Times

In the recently concluded tug of war between the cities of Sacramento and Seattle for the Kings franchise, the hard fact was that “There can be only one.” That wasn’t to say that Seattle, with its rabid fan base and rich basketball history, do not deserve an NBA franchise. However, as it is, no city will give up its franchise. Yet, a strong clamor for expansion may spring the tide.

per Seattle Times:

In the gloom of a stormy Dallas afternoon last week, in which the NBA announced it won’t be coming back to Seattle next season, came one ray of light — an apparent softening of the league’s stance on expansion.
And in that might rest the best hope for the NBA returning to Seattle anytime soon.

That assumes, of course, that Chris Hansen intends to keep pursuing an NBA team after losing out on his chance to buy and relocate the Sacramento Kings. And that Seattle will be a more attractive city than others who might bid for an expansion team.

Hansen has said n...

Maloofs agree to sell Sacramento Kings for a record price

The Maloof era in Sacramento has seen the highest highs and the lowest lows in the history of the Kings franchise. It saw Vlade Divac and Chris Webber lead the team to the NBA's best record, it saw the team bottom out with a 17-win season, and the last few years have seen a struggle for the very future of the team. And now it has now finally come to a close.

At a press conference at 10 am local time, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson announced what was reported last night, that the Sacramento group cultivated by Johnson and led by Vivek Ranadive will purchase the Kings from the Maloofs.

The Ranadive group is expected to purchase 65 percent of the team, worth $347 million based off of the record setting $535 million valuation but Mayor Johnson said he could not comment on the exact details of the agreement.

It has also been reported that the Ranadive group will take over the Maloof family's debt to the city and have agreed not to be recipients in the NBA's reven...

Sacramento Kings Look Like They’re Staying Put After Maloof Family Reportedly Reaches Agreement With Local Group

A person familiar with the deal says the Maloof family has reached an agreement with a Sacramento group headed by TIBCO software tycoon Vivek Ranadive to sell a 65 percent controlling interest in the Kings at a total franchise valuation of $535 million.
The person, speaking on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press late Thursday night because they weren’t authorized to talk publicly, said there are about 30 investors in the group put together by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former All-Star guard.
An official announcement is expected Friday.
The NBA is expected to officially approve the agreement next week. The person said the agreement has to be closed by May 31.
On Wednesday, the NBA board of governors rejected a bid from a Seattle group that wanted to buy and move the franchise to the Pacific Northwest.
The 22-8 vote killed a deal that would have sold a 65 percent controlling interest at a total franchise valuation of $625 million to a Seattle group led by investor Ch...

NBA Owners Reject Kings’ Proposal to Move From Sacramento to Seattle

DALLAS — NBA owners voted Wednesday to reject the Sacramento Kings’ proposed move to Seattle, the latest in a long line of cities that have tried to land the franchise.
The 22-8 vote followed a recommendation made last month by the NBA’s relocation committee and may have finally brought an end to an emotional saga that has dragged on for nearly three years.
A group led by investor Chris Hansen had a deal to buy the team. Hansen hoped to move the franchise to Seattle and rename it the SuperSonics. The original Sonics were moved to Oklahoma City in 2008 and were renamed the Thunder.
Commissioner David Stern said the league will spend the next 24 to 48 hours talking to the Maloofs, the team’s owners, about working out a deal with a competing ownership group in Sacramento.
“The big winner here was Sacramento,” Stern said.
The Maloofs reached an agreement in January to sell a 65 percent controlling interest in the team to Hansen’s group at a total franchise valuation of $525 million, top...

Owners reject Kings move to Seattle

While we’ve been covering this pretty extensively over the past few weeks and everyone knew this was coming, the NBA officially killed the Sacramento Kings’ proposed move to Seattle on Wednesday. The NBA owners voted Wednesday to reject the move with a 22-8 vote. Until now the NBA’s relocation committee had simply recommended the league reject the move. Now that the owners have voted, it is officially dead. A group led by investor Chris Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had tried to move the team to Seattle in the hopes of renaming it the SuperSonics. The original Sonics moved to Oklahoma City in 2008 and became the Thunder. The Maloof family, which owns the Kings, had negotiated a deal with Hansen’s group to sell the team. Brothers Joe and Gavin Maloof have been running the franchise, and were said to be intent on only selling only to the Seattle-based group. Hansen was willing to pay $406 million for 65 percent of the team, which would have bought the Maloofs out. NBA commis...

NBA Owners Reject Relocation Of The Sacramento Kings

The NBA’s Board of Governors voted on Wednesday to keep the Sacramento Kings in Sacramento, following the NBA Relocation Committee’s recommendation.

The Board voted 22-8, and all they needed was a majority.

So, while the Kings won’t be leaving their city, and Seattle won’t be getting a team, there are still a lot of loose ends.

The first is who will be the owner of the team.

Currently the Maloof family owns it, but Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer, who led the Seattle group, have told the Maloofs that they’ll buy 20 percent of the team, and retain the ability to purchase the majority in two years.

Also, if the Maloofs remain the owners, this doesn’t solve the issue of building a new stadium.

There’s also the group led by Vivek Ranadive who have put an offer on the table to buy the team and build a new stadium downtown.

It’s been reported that after this defeat, Hansen and Ballmer want an expansion team in Seattle, however, the NBA has said no new teams will be...

Tale of Two Cities: Sacramento makes final pitch

via Capradio.org

On the eve of the NBA Board’s meeting to decide the final fate of the Sacramento Kings franchise, Sacramento mayor and former NBA superstar Kevin Johnson will make a last pitch for his city to keep the team. The Seattle buyers bid was much higher so KJ has to appeal in a different way.

per Capradio.org

The Mayor will make a presentation in Dallas, Texas for tomorrow’s National Basketball Association Board of Governors’ meeting. Johnson says he is confident the NBA owners will vote to keep the team in Sacramento in spite of a recent bid increase for the team made by the Seattle group, “We have been told by the NBA early on this would not be a bidding war and I think there’s something that does a disservice to the process and the NBA if you’re just gonna always sell to the highest bidder. I mean, what would tell every other small and medium-sized market that “You always have to worry about your franchise.” That’s not the nature and the spirit of the NBA.”

Seattle Group Has Backdoor Deal To Bring Sacramento Kings To Seattle

The Hansen-Ballmer group, who is attempting to bring the Sacramento Kings to the City of Seattle, has a secret plan to relocate the team if the NBA keep blocking the move.According to a source, the group isn't taking no for an answer, as the NBA relocation committee voted to deny the relocation. The Seattle based investor group not only will increase their bid for the franchise [twice] but said that if the NBA voted to reject the sale, they had a backup agreement with the Maloof family, current owners of the Kings, to buy 20% stake ownership in the team. The purchase would make the investment group minority investors. If that happens, they [the Maloof family] wouldn't need the NBA approval to swap shares of the franchise [give shares of the franchise to the Hansen-Ballmer group] unlike the current scenario where the NBA would have to agree to allow them to purchase any stake in the Kings. The NBA is aware of the backdoor move, and one NBA owner reportedly told CBS Sports that ...

NBA owners hold firm, won’t let Sacramento Kings move to Seattle

A committee of NBA owners re-examined the potential relocation of the Sacramento Kings to Seattle on Monday, and reports say they came to the same conclusion as before: the franchise isn’t moving. The relocation committee will recommend to the league’s owners that the Kings not be allowed to be sold to a Seattle-based group led by investor Chris Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
A full vote on the matter is expected to happen at owners’ meetings in Dallas on Wednesday, but it is highly unlikely that the owners would go against the committee’s recommendation.

Last week in an attempt to change the minds of the NBA’s owners, Hansen’s group upped its offer to buy 65 percent of the Kings from $358 million to $409 million. He also offered a relocation fee of about $116 million, which would work out to roughly $4 million per NBA team. That move was meant to sweeten the deal and sway owners who weren’t convinced yet.
Even with those changes, it appears the league’s owners are unwilli...

Maloofs Haven't Ruled Out Sacramento Offer

The Maloofs continue to consider the possibility of selling the Sacramento Kings to a group that intends to keep the team from relocating to Seattle, according to a source.
Reports over the weekend indicated that the Kings have an alternative plan in place to sell a smaller stake to the Seattle-based group led by Chris Hansen.
But the Maloofs "still has that option," said a source of the Sacramento offer.
The Sacramento group is offering $341 million.
The Maloofs "intend to be loyal to Hansen to the bitter end," the source said. The Maloofs also do not feel that the Sacramento bid is complete or competitive.

Report: Maloofs will only sell Kings to Seattle group

News broke on Saturday that the Maloof brothers (Joe and Gavin) will only agree to sell the Sacramento Kings to the Seattle-based group headed by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Chris Hansen. If the NBA doesn’t approve a move to Seattle, the Maloofs apparently have a backup plan. The crash-strapped brothers have made a backup agreement with the Hansen-Ballmer group to sell it 20 percent of the team for $125 million, if the NBA doesn’t approve a full sale. That would allow the Maloofs to continue running the team. Also on Friday, Hansen announced that he had increased his offer to buy out the Maloofs to $409 million (up from $358 million). That would put the total valuation of the franchise at $625 million, since the Maloofs own 65 percent of the team. The new proposal would also include $115 million offer to the NBA’s owners as a relocation fee. That would work out to about $4 million per team. For comparison, when the Oklahoma City Thunder moved from Seattle in 2008, the franchise...

Owner's revealing chat with Sonics fan

After the NBA Relocation Committee voted unanimously to recommend rejecting a move by the Sacramento Kings to Seattle, every forlorn Sonics fan began focusing on alternative means of landing a team — either relocation from another market, or expansion. In the meantime, one scorned Sonics fan, Danny, took to Twitter to lead the charge in boycotting businesses run by owners on the relocation committee (similar to many Sonics fans who have boycotted Starbucks since 2008). One of those committee members is Miami Heat owner Mickey Arison, who took notice of Danny’s tweets, and followed back in order to engage in a direct message chat. Thankfully, Danny sent screen caps of the entire exchange to 950 KJR AM (Seattle sports radio). The most significant piece of the chat involves the talk of expansion. As we’ve mentioned before, the assumption is that expansion won’t be discussed until 2016, when terms of the new television contract are known. Arison essentially confirmed that timetable, whi...

Kings now staying in Sacramento?

We are one step closer to a resolution in the Sacramento Kings/Seattle SuperSonics saga after the NBA's relocation committee made a unanimous recommendation to deny the request to relocate the team to Seattle, according to several reports. This does not totally rule out the chance for relocation, but it would be pretty odd to see the NBA Board of Governors decide against a unanimous decision from the relocation committee. The Board of Governors will meet May 13 to formally vote on the matter. The reaction from Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson came quick on Twitter and was obviously one of excitement. That's what I'm talking about SACRAMENTO!!!!! WE DID IT!!!!! — Kevin Johnson (@KJ_MayorJohnson) April 29, 2013 I've never been prouder of this city. I thank the ownership group, city leaders, but most of all the BEST FANS IN THE NBA!!! — Kevin Johnson (@KJ_MayorJohnson) April 29, 2013 The next question is whether there will be any sort of legal action ta...
