Devils Captain Confident in Turn Around Season

Bryce Salvador (Getty Images)
The 2013 NHL season did not go as expected for the defending Eastern Conference Champions. The New Jersey Devils busted out of the gates with a dominant 8-1-3 record in their first 12 games, which was good enough for top spot in the East. When the final horn sounded in game 48, the Devils were on the outside looking in for the second time in three years.

“When Marty and Kovy went down with their injuries, we were right in the thick of a playoff race. We lost two very important players...

Rangers to play Devils, Isles at Yankee Stadium

Yankee Stadium will host a pair of NHL games next season, with the New York Rangers playing the New Jersey Devils on Jan. 26 and the Rangers meeting the Islanders three days later.

The NHL is increasing its popular outdoor games, which in the past had been limited to on or around New Year's Day. There likely will be six next season.

Toronto and Detroit will meet at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Jan 1, the Anaheim Ducks will play the Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium on Jan. 5 and the Chicago Blackhawks will host the Pittsburgh Penguins at Soldier Field on March 1.

The games at Yankee Stadium were announced Wednesday. A game between Ottawa and Vancouver at BC Place on March 2 also is being planned.

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Devils 2012 first-round draft pick Stefan Matteau did not quit his junior team, his agent Pat Brisson said this afternoon.

There were multiple initial reports that Matteau, 19, quit the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada after being benched for the third period of the Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Baie-Comeau in Game 2 of the QMJHL semifinals. Armada GM Joël Bouchard announced today that the team had released Matteau.

Brisson said that Matteau was actually released after Saturday night’s game.

“The team decided to release Stefan. He didn’t quit,” Brisson said. “They made a decision. People read the headlines at first that Matteau quit and drives back with the fans. The team made a decision to release him. Joël was firm about it. They gave him a plane ticket to go back from Baie-Comeau to Montreal and he decided to ride back on the bus. His father (Armada assistant coach and former NHLer Stephane Matteau) decided to drive back with him.

What Happened To The New Jersey Devils?

from Stan Fischler at the Daily Freeman,

In Newark, where the Devils enjoyed an unprecedented season-long run of sellouts at Prudential Center, fans are massaging their scalps, wondering how the plunge from the penthouse to the pits occurred almost without warning and precedent.

Or, as Mr. Devil-turned-broadcaster Ken Daneyko says, “I’ve never seen anything like this collapse.”

While the Blueshirts prepare for the playoffs, Lou Lamoriello’s club can only ponder what-might-have-been, especially since the Devils leaped from the starting gate in this aborted hockey season with an 8-1-3 record.

The ever-trustworthy Fischler Sports X-Ray Machine provides all the pertinent answers which, incidentally, are so simplistic they can be summed up in six words: Age, Injuries, Sophomore Slump, Zach (and) Parise. To wit:

AGE -- DeBoer entered the season with two veteran goaltenders. Future Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur will be 41 years old in a little more than two weeks. His s...

Dmitry Kulikov hits Stephen Gionta into Panthers bench, T.J. Brennan shoves him back on the ice (Video)

Florida Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kulikov knocked New Jersey Devils forward Stephen Gionta flying over the boards and into the Panthers bench during the third period of Saturday's NHL game at the Prudential Center. To add insult to injury, Panthers defenseman T.J. Brennan gave Gionta some "help" getting back onto the ice with a little shove in the back as Gionta was hopping over the boards.

Kulikov's hit was clean, but Brennan somehow escaped being penalized even though an official was only a few feet away. However, the Devils got the last laugh as they won the game 6-2.

Are the Devils cursed since Martin Brodeur won his 666th game?

The New Jersey Devils appeared to be a safe bet to reach the Eastern Conference playoffs prior to their current losing streak. The Devils have lost 10 straight. Their last win came on March 23, and it was a milestone win for future Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur as it was his 666th career victory. Uh oh. As you have probably heard, 666 is a number that has historically been associated with the Antichrist or the Devil. Brodeur has started every game in net since his 666th career victory, which came against the Florida Panthers, and the Devils have not won one a single of them. Guess how many games they have remaining? Six. Guess how many points they are trailing the 8th-seeded New York Rangers by in the standings? Six. If you believe in curses and hexes, New Jersey’s current situation is right up your alley. Brodeur himself even acknowledged it, although in a very conservative manner. “Now, it looks like that, huh?” Brodeur said after Monday night’s loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, via...
