Cancer-stricken announcer calls magical finish

It's the humanity that makes us watch.

Scores are important, stats are interesting and highlights are fun, especially the high-flying dunks and free-for-all rebounding that made Monday night's finale between Louisville and Michigan so special.

But in the end, it's the people and their stories that draw us in and keep us riveted to games that have no bearing on history, no effect on world events, and no greater meaning other than what we bestow upon them.

The final game of the NCAA tournament captivated millions, not because of the X's and O's or the three-point shooting, but because of Rick Pitinos quest to win championships at two different schools and surpass John Woodens win record; and because of how the Louisville players rallied after Kevin Ware went down with now-infamous compound tibia fracture.

That was why people watched. The great basketball was just a bonus.

But there was another great college championship game in recent days, and another story that made it just as compel

Akeem Richmond hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift East Carolina over Weber State 77-74 Tuesday night and claim the CollegeInsider.com tournament championship, capping the best season in school history.

The Pirates trailed 71-65 with 2:50 remaining but closed on a 12-3 run.

Weber State (30-7) had a chance to pad its late lead but had trouble at the line, making 9-of-19 free throws overall.

Miguel Paul led East Carolina with 23 points and Maurice Kemp added 20 for the Pirates (23-12), who tied a school record for wins in a season set by the 1953-54 squad.

Scott Bamfort led Weber State with 19 points, and Frank Otis and Davion Berry had 16 apiece.

The loss was Weber State's first at home since Dec. 15, a 10-point setback to Brigham Young. The Wildcats entered Tuesday's game on a 14-game home winning streak.

East Carolina’s Shamarr Bowden Ejected for Punching Opponent in the Face

A nasty altercation took place Saturday night when East Carolina’s Shamarr Bowden punched Konner Tucker of UTEP in the face during the second half of their game.
In the video, you can see Bowden take down Tucker under the basket while his teammates try to score. For no apparent reason, Bowden starts to swing on an unsuspecting Tucker. The close up angle shows a much better view of the two punches that connect with Tucker’s face. Bowden was then ejected from the game.

Bowden, a senior guard, has a history of violence and this type of behavior. He was arrested last April for ”criminal possession of a loaded weapon and prohibited use of a firearm” after he allegedly fired several shots in the air at a party.
After the game, Bowden took to Twitter to apologize for his actions direct to Tucker.
@ktuck_25 didn’t get to speak to you after the game but I want to apologize to you and your team. (cont) tl.gd/kra3u3

Corvonn Gaines drained a 3-pointer with 3 seconds remaining in overtime as East Carolina topped Conference USA-foe Central Florida 88-85 Saturday night.

East Carolina (10-5, 1-1) trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half but crawled back and forced a 74-74 tie. Maurice Kemp hit two free throws to put the Pirates up 76-74, but Keith Clanton hit a jumper with 17 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

East Carolina's Robert Sampson scored first in overtime with a dunk, then the teams exchanged the lead four times.
