#92 Houston Cougars: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series. Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days. Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.
We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order. We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.
With the exception of their unexpected run in the 2010 Conference USA Tournament which earned them the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, the Houston Cougars have been absent on the national scene for the past twenty years. James Dickey is hoping to turn that around and brings in a pair of major recruits this season.

Cougars' move to Big East good for future

For much of the life in Conference USA the basketball story was essentially Memphis and all the other guys. Oh sure, every so often Houston or someone else made some noise, but Memphis was the big dog and usually the only conference rep making the NCAA field.

Things are about to change for the Houston Cougars. They won't have to worry about just one team to overcome. The Cougars will have to beat a number of schools to reach the top. They are joining the Big East. Defending national champion Connecticut plays there. So does Louisville, Cincinnati, Marquette, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Depaul, Villanova and others schools perhaps not so basketball famous.

All the attention about the school's move to the Big East revolves around getting the football program into a BCS automatic qualifying league. With the future defections of West Virginia to the Big 12 and both Pitt and Syracuse to the ACC there could be some question whether the Big East can hold onto its automatic football spot.

There is no question

Cougs feature eight new players into season

The newness has worn off, now, which means that theoretically speaking the University of Houston basketball team should be a more congealed one in year two under coach James Dickey.

"Everybody's bought in this time," sophomore forward Alandise Harris said.

When he says this, he is wearing a regular tie that he has looped into the form of a bowtie, which will prove itself a merry distraction for the assembled media at UH's basketball media day on Wednesday. But Harris was not being (intentionally) diversionary, he was explaining in concise terms why he thought the Cougars lost so many close games last season.

In conference play, Houston lost both its overtime games and was 2-5 in games decided by five or fewer points. This was part of a 12-18 season that included a 4-12 Conference USA mark. Year one for Dickey was about establishing something, and year two is about building on it.

Theoretically.

"I'm not sure we established it," Dickey said. "Certainly not the way
