Dee Karl: NHL14 Cover Vote & U Maine

As I've said previously, Colin McDonald is one of the most entertaining Islanders on the team. He's also a great sport. Maybe not the world's greatest actor, but seriously a great sport.

Have you voted today?

Now, for the rediculous. If in deed U Maine is tossing around Jack Capuano's name as a candidate for their next coach, it's beyond laughable.

15-year vet defenseman Sutton retires

Veteran defenseman Andy Sutton has retired, ending a 15-year career beset by injuries.

Sutton played in 676 NHL games, most recently with Edmonton in 2011-12. He also suited up for San Jose, Minnesota, Atlanta, the New York Islanders, Ottawa and Anaheim.

Sutton scored 38 goals and 112 assists, had 1,134 hits, 1,164 blocked shots and 1,185 penalty minutes in his career.

However, his physical style of play took its toll. Sutton had 12 surgeries for various injuries and he never played an entire season. He reached 60 games only three times.

The 38-year-old Sutton spent the 2012-13 season on Edmonton's injured list with a knee injury.

The 15 best fights from the NHL regular season

The wait is over. PDL is proud to present our countdown of the best hockey fights from the 2013 regular season. It took quite some time to compile this list as we combed through our Hockey Fights of the Week series, hunting for the most brutal and most entertaining bouts from the season that was. Did your favorite fight make our list? Let us know in the comments if we missed a gem from this season or if you think we did a poor job of ranking these bouts. These types of things are purely subjective, so feel free to tell us where we went wrong. Now, on to the 15 best hockey fights from the 2013 regular season. 15. Three fights in three seconds - VAN VS. DAL - February 15 Let's start this list off with a bang. Vancouver and Dallas kick this countdown off with three fights in three seconds. As soon as one brawl was cleared and the teams prepared to take the next draw, another altercation would break out. Individually, the three fights were mostly average. Combined, the...

I missed seeing Josh Bailey on breakup day at the NY Islanders. But my buddy Christian Arnold was kind enough to sneak in two questions for me. You can hear them at about the 3:14 mark of the video.

But let's talk about Josh. In 2008 the Coliseum was packed for the NHL Draft party. The media was stationed where the penalty boxes are, on the floor. When Garth Snow started moving the Isl...

Three Lady Byng finalists announced

Islanders forward Matt Moulson, Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane and Lightning forward Martin St. Louis are the three finalists for the NHL's Lady Byng Trophy, the league's sportsmanship award.

St. Louis has already won the award twice (2010 and `11), and was a finalist two other times. The 37-year-old ranked second among NHL forwards in total time on ice, but was assessed just 14 penalty minutes.

Moulson is a finalist for the second straight season. He had four penalty minutes in 47 games, tied with San Jose's Logan Couture for the fewest among the NHL's top 50 scorers.

Kane is a Lady Byng finalist for the first time, after helping Chicago to a Presidents' Trophy. He played 47 games and averaged 20:03 of ice time, but had just eight penalty minutes.

Yankee Stadium to host two NHL tilts

Yankee Stadium will host a National Hockey League double-header next season, with the New York Rangers facing the New Jersey Devils on Jan. 26 and playing the New York Islanders three days later — all in the week leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium. The New York rivalry games complete the NHL’s 2014 Stadium Series, which also includes a Jan. 25 matchup between the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, and a March 1 contest between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks at Chicago’s Soldier Field. The Rangers will be at least get a little familiar with the Yankee Stadium ice before they take on the Islanders. The Blue Shirts will first play the Devils before the Isles come to the Bronx. Both games will be considered road games for the Rangers. "The New York Rangers are honored to participate in these two historic games at Yankee Stadium, bringing hockey into the home of another one of New York's iconic sports franchises,&q

Despite Early Exit, Coliseum Was True Advantage for New York Islanders

Photo credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports
UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Nassau Coliseum was quite different Tuesday than it had been three days prior. The ice was gone and instead of fans there were only workers. There was no cheering anymore, just the sound of silence.
But as the New York Islanders gathered their things and said goodbye to the 2013 season, they fondly remembered one last time the excitement and adrenaline that they received from the fans at the Coliseum.
“I’ve heard a lot about it over the three years I’ve been here and I’ve never really seen it,” Matt Martin said of the atmosphere for games 3, 4 and 6. “The last three home games and in the playoffs, it was just electrifying. It made a huge difference for us I think. It turned into the funnest rink in the league to play in.”
Other members of the team were quick to comment on how exciting it was to play in the building.
“The best experience I’ve ever been a part of,” David Ullstrom said. “I’ve played some juniors or something,

Islanders moving to Brooklyn early?

This past decade, the New York Islander fan base has been through the wringer. They’ve watched helplessly as politicians condemned their building on their way to evicting their team. Couple this with five consecutive last place finishes in their division, and it makes sense why the fans reacted they way they did as the Isles competed with His Majesty Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in round one of the NHL Playoffs. It was a cathartic exhale. Now that the Islanders have been eliminated, their off ice issues will come to the forefront. The most intriguing news surrounding the Isles is their move to The Barclays Center, 30 miles west of Nassau Coliseum. (Just a quick geography lesson before moving on, Brooklyn is technically on Long Island. It isn’t a part of Long Island the place, but it is on Long Island the land mass. One of those, a rhombus is a square but a square isn’t a rhombus type of things.) When asked how they feel about the move, every Islander fan has the sa...

Islanders look to future after ouster vs. Pens

When the shot from Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik struck the back of the net, over 16,000 strong weren't ready for the New York Islanders' season to end.

Especially that suddenly.

Yes, things are definitely different on Long Island these days.

The Islanders' best season since 2007 came to a sudden end Saturday night when Orpik's shot won Game 6 in overtime and gave Pittsburgh a first-round series victory.

Not that it was a surprise that the Penguins moved on. After all, they are the top-seeded team in the Eastern Conference, and the Islanders barely qualified for their first postseason appearance in six years.

But the Islanders won two games in the series and had three one-goal leads in the final game before finally falling.

''We're going to learn a lot about what it takes to be in the playoffs, to get to the playoffs, and hopefully we're going to understand it's going to take even more to win a series,'' Islanders star forward John Tavares said. ''I

Islanders Now Have Something To Build On

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

The path here, to the overtime of Game 6 of the first round and to accompanying accolades was actually the easy part. It’s not about being quirky anymore. It’s about solidifying. About building on a solid foundation. About getting from here to there by becoming the type of franchise that can attract marquee free agents.

It won’t be about the building in Brooklyn. It will be about the organization.

The Islanders have been playing with house money against the Penguins, and I bet you thought it was Charles Wang’s money. This is the last time for that.

One round doesn’t quite qualify as a joy ride. But it has sure been fun. The Islanders have raised the echoes. They have raised expectations.

Now comes the hard part. Now it gets serious. It’s about time.

Casey Cizikas gets hit in throat by skate, amazingly uninjured

New York Islanders forward Casey Cizikas managed to escape a scary incident without injury in the first period of game six against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Cizikas was forechecking on Simon Despres when he laid a hit down that caused Despres to spin like a top. Despres was off balance and his skate came up and hit Cizikas in the throat and miraculously Cizikas was not injured on the play. How he managed to escape the play without even getting cut is simply beyond me. Skate blades are razor sharp and I’ve seen players get cut by skates that had less forceful impacts than this incident.

Islanders’ Matt Martin checks Sidney Crosby, stands over him (VIDEO)

YouTube
If the Islanders are not going to eliminate the Penguins (and let’s face it, they won’t), the least they can do is push around Sid the Kid, right? On Thursday, the Penguins whooped the Isles 4-0 in a crucial Game Five. With the series tied at two games apiece and the game zip-zip, Islanders forward Matt Martin had an opportunity to put Crosby on his backside. And he didn’t miss it.
Martin stands 6’3″ and 205 pounds. Crosby stands four inches shorter and about 200 pounds. So the size difference isn’t huge by any means. But, you wouldn’t know it by the collision in the clip below. Martin and Crosby were both chasing a puck into the corner and right as Martin tapped the puck to freedom, he saw black out of the corner of his eye.
He didn’t exactly have time to line up Crosby, but he was able to brace for the hit. The same couldn’t be said for 87.
But sending Crosby to the ice wasn’t enough for Martin. Comically, he then stood over his victim as the puck was still in h

Video: Pittsburgh Penguins blank the Islanders in Game 5

The Pittsburgh Penguins Tomas Vokoun made 31 saves in his first playoff appearance in six years on Thursday.
His feat lead Pittsburgh to a 4-0 victory over the New York Islanders.
The Penguins goaltending change helped them secure a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.
Marc-Andre Fleury had struggled for the Penguins after blanking New York in the series opener.
The Islanders went on to net 14 goals in the next three games, leading the Penguins to bring Vokoun off the bench.
Pittsburgh, No. 1 seed in the East, will try to advance to the semifinals on Saturday.
The Islanders will host Game 6.
This was Vokoun’s second playoff shutout, having recorded one with the Nashville Predators in 2004.
Tyler Kennedy, Douglas Murray and Sidney Crosby all scored in the second period during a span of 6:35 and Kris Letang added a third-period goal.
The victory was not as neat as it sounds.
A brawl erupted towards the end that produced game misconduct penalties for Pittsburgh’s Murray and

Sidney Crosby, Penguins Demolish Islanders in Blowout-Filled Night of Hockey (Videos)

Wednesday night’s playoff games provided a slate of thrilling hockey. All four games were decided by a single goal, with three of them requiring overtime. Thursday night? Not so much.
The Penguins were on the winning end of one of the three blowouts on the evening, thrashing Evgeni Nabokov and the Islanders to take a 3-2 lead in their opening-round series. After a scoreless first period, Sidney Crosby provided the exclamation point on a three-goal second, splitting two Isles defenseman before beating Nabokov blocker-side.
Check out Crosby’s beauty in the video below.

Crosby’s score was nifty, but the Penguins didn’t need grade-A shots to beat Nabokov on Thursday.
The Isles netminder allowed four goals before being yanked in the third period, and none was worse than this one off the stick of Pittsburgh’s Douglas Murray. Murray’s shot from the point was on a trajectory to hit Nabokov right in the chest, but it nicked off the top of the goalie’...

Sidney Crosby scores filthy goal against Islanders

After New York Islanders forward John Tavares made a fantastic series of moves and almost scored to cut the Pittsburgh Penguins lead to one, Sidney Crosby decided to show off his world-class skills. Crosby picked up the puck from Jarome Iginla in the neutral zone and went to work on Islanders defensemen Thomas Hickey and Lubomir Visnovsky. Crosby split the two defenseman with a fantastic series of dangles and then stayed on his feet after Hickey made a last ditch effort trying to shove him down. Crosby then walked in alone and buried a gorgeous shot low blocker to extend the Penguins lead to 3-0.
Game By Game The Islanders Gain Confidence

from Katie Strang of ESPN,

Even without top-pair defenseman Andrew MacDonald, who was forced from the game with an upper-body injury in the second period, the Islanders seem encouraged by their chances from here on out.

They’ll take momentum into Game 5 and the knowledge that these Penguins are a beatable team.

Although an inexperienced squad, the Islanders have matured, both from earlier this season and maybe even earlier this series, into one capable of managing the momentum swings and surges within a game.

“We put so much effort into getting here, there was no doubt we wanted to make the most of this opportunity," Tavares said. "We weren’t just satisfied being here. We believe in this room, obviously. ... There are a lot of guys stepping up for us here and that’s what we need.”

Malkin, Hamonic scrap after Game 4

The Pittsburgh Penguins are a very frustrated team, and why shouldn’t they be? They have been scoring plenty of goals to win games, yet they are only tied 2-2 with the New York Islanders through four games. After the horn blew to end game four, Jarome Iginla and Matt Martin started pushing and shoving. That’s when both teams came together and Evgeni Malkin and Travis Hamonic actually dropped the gloves. All it took was for Hamonic to throw one punch before Malkin’s teammates jumped in to separate the two of them. Chris Kunitz was the first one in there, but as he held Hamonic down, Malkin threw a healthy dose of upper cuts at Hamonic. A scrum would ensure and eventually be broken up. It’s safe to say that Malkin could handle himself, but the last thing you need is one of the best players in the world to break his hand during a meaningless fight. This will certainly raise the tension for game five.

Islanders handing out “No Diving” signs at Game Four

The New York Islanders fans are apparently upset with Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby and his diving, calling him Princess Crosby and handing out “No Diving” signs at Game Four. Crosby has not been called for diving yet in this playoff series, but his reputation has been and will continue to be, that he dives to draw penalties. It’s a creative sign but it could use some color.
