Bruins, Rangers team up for double high sticks

Boston Bruins forward Tyler Seguin was bringing the puck into the zone when he went to put a shot on net. As he shot, New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider put his stick out to poke check, and Seguin’s follow through ended up riding all the way up Kreider’s stick and Kreider was hit in the face. At the same time Rangers defenseman Steve Eminger was trying to impede Seguin and his stick ended up getting in Seguin’s face and hit him in the mouth. Never have I seen two people get hit in the face with high sticks simultaneously, but that’s exactly what happened during the Bruins game three win last night. Both players would end up being fine, but getting hit in the face with a stick is never fun.
There’s Lundqvist Then Everyone Else

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

It was hardly earth-shattering stuff, nothing like saying a player “stinks” on the power play, for instance, but John Tortorella sure had it right before the playoffs started when the Rangers’ coach talked about legacies being made in the postseason and not in the regular-season.

Ten games into the playoffs following last night’s dagger-to-the-heart, 2-1 defeat to the Bruins in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal, we’re still waiting.

There is Henrik Lundqvist, all right, whose back-to-back shutouts with the Blueshirts facing opening-round elimination by the Caps in Games 6 and 7 of the first round carried his team forward, and whose spectacular work last night was all that stood between the Rangers and humiliation.

Double high-stick in Rangers-Bruins Game 3, with no penalty called (Video)

A weird play took place in the third period of Tuesday night's Game 3 between the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins when two high sticks occurred simultaneously, but neither one of them was called a penalty.

Rangers defenseman Steve Eminger lost control of his stick as he tried to tap it away from Bruins center Tyler Seguin as he skated into the Rangers zone. At the same time, Seguin tried to shoot it through Eminger and left winger Chris Krieder, who came back to help. The end result was a double high-stick, with Eminger hitting Seguin in the face and Seguin hitting Krieder in the face. Play was stopped as Krieder and Seguin needed time to recover, but both players appeared to be OK.

You would think at least one of them would have been called a penalty. Terrible job by the officials. How do they miss that?

Daniel Paille’s Bizarre Bouncing Goal Propels Bruins to 3-0 Series Lead Over Rangers (Video)

The New York Rangers shut down the Bruins’ top scorers Tuesday night, but it was the grinders that ended up leading the B’s to victory.
Boston’s fourth line was on the ice for both of their goals in Game 3, including Daniel Paille‘s game-winner with 3:31 to play in regulation. Gregory Campbell‘s shot from the left boards ricocheted off linemate Shawn Thornton and over the head of Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. The puck bounced dangerously close to the goal line, but Paille was there to hammer it home, paving the way for the Bruins to take a 3-0 lead in the teams’ Eastern Conference semifinal series.
Check out Paille’s wacky game-winner below.

Henrik Lundqvist Living Up to Vezina Trophy Billing, Giving Rangers Chance to Steal Game 3 (Video)

Henrik Lundqvist and Tuukka Rask are widely regarded as two of the best goalies in the NHL. Lundqvist is making his case as the best here in Game 3, however.
He’s made 23 saves through the first two periods of the Bruins-Rangers clash and is looking poised to steal this game for the Blueshirts. Of course, the B’s still have 20 minutes to see if there’s anything they can do to change that. NESN Nation’s Dan Duquette has more in the above video.

Staal, Powe Skate Again; Clowe Doesn't; Same Line-up

Powe and Staal skating at this AMs #NYR optional at MSG
	— Pat Leonard (@NYDNRangers) May 21, 2013

The two also did bag skates with the taxi players after practice, but neither will play in Game 3 tonight. Ryane Clowe did not skate, so the line-up will remain the same as Game 2.

Here's Powe on his recovery from his second concussion this season (via Bergen Record)...

“I feel good. It’s good to back on the ice and skating with the guys. It’s a few days of skating and I felt pretty good, so I’m just trying to keep skating, working out and trying to get back in the lineup."

...until I hear that Staal is feeling more comfortable with his vision, his skating on a daily basis means nothing.

...Rangers will continue to miss both Staal and Clowe in this series and will have a very difficult time climbing back into this series without them. I feel like a broken record with those two.

As far as the Bruins go, it looks like they're going to stick with the...

The Rangers are closer to the Cup than you think

Big picture outlook > lockout shortened season.
After the Rangers loss against Boston Sunday night, much of the Rangers fan base went into panic mode. The usual suspects came out and called for Tortorella’s head, Michael Del Zotto’s and to some extent Brad Richards, as if the loss was solely on them. We’ve been down this road before, and quite frankly, I wasn’t surprised at the fan sentiment. The stakes are high at this time of year and everyone is wound tight. I get it.
Still, despite some Rangers bloggers calling this team mediocre and overachievers (which kinda contradicts the Torts hate no?), I beg to differ. No matter what happens the next couple of games, I still believe the Rangers are closer to the Cup than most give them credit for.
Do the Rangers need to make a couple of moves this offseason? Sure. But the right core is still in place, the right coach still leads them, and both will be back next season. I guarantee it.

Look, there will be plenty of time to debate who s...

Kreider Needs to Learn Team Game

Mike Sielski at the Wall Street Journal reports that one of the biggest reasons for Chris Kreider's struggles this season and John Tortorella's refusal to use him is that he still needs to learn how to play a team game.

Here's Gordie Clark on shortcomings he noticed in Kreider's game when scouting him...

"There was a lack of knowledge on how to play a team game. He was so fast and so strong, he was able to go and do things on his own. There was a lot of projection that had to get done, and one thing that had to get done was, how does he learn to play a team game where you have a job to do?"

Kreider admits that he's he's still trying to master the subtler aspects of his sport, including the proper way to dump a puck in the zone.

...Kreider is a guy who's been able to dominate at every level due to his superior physical attributes. Because of that, coaches have run game plans through him, so he likely hasn't been forced to ...

Despite playoff struggles, Brad Richards won’t be bought out until next summer

New York’s fourth line center would cost an extra $6 million to buy out this summer
It’s growing increasingly difficult to believe that this is just an off year for Brad Richards, that the 33-year-old will bounce back with the benefit of a summer to clear his head and a full John Tortorella training camp in the fall. There are just too many signs that the former star center is on a steep decline.
And yet, despite Tortorella’s own silent admission through a fourth-line demotion that Richards has been awful, it’s still extremely unlikely the Rangers will exercise a buyout on Richards this summer.
As Dave Lozo explained so well last week, it would make very little sense for New York to exile Richards this summer rather than waiting until 2014. The chief reason: buying out Richards this year would cost New York $24 million over the next 14 years, while waiting a season would cost the Blueshirts $18 million over the next 12 seasons. Is it really a wise move for the franchise to swallo...

Henrik Lundqvist Admits to Having Sore Left Shoulder, Says ‘Everybody Is Sore’ in Playoffs

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist had just given up five goals to the Bruins in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinals series, as he quietly removed his goalie equipment in the New York dressing room.
The goalie gingerly slid his Rangers jacket on, with a painful grimace on his face as he did so before answering questions from the media. As he answered the questions, he grabbed at his left shoulder a couple of times, leading one to assume that he was dealing with some sort of injury.
“It’s my shoulder,” he admitted after the game. “We’ll see. We’ll take a look at it.”
After Rangers practice Tuesday, Lundqvist once again discussed the shoulder injury, but he was also quick to admit that the injury wasn’t anything major.
“Yeah, it’s under control,” Lundqvist said, according to NorthJersey.com. “I landed on the ice awkwardly and hurt it a little bit. It’s under control.
Lineup changes: Girardi and McDonagh back together

Per Andrew Gross, Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh are back together as a pairing on defense. After an abysmal Game Two with Michael Del Zotto, Girardi will be reunited with McDonagh to form that top shutdown pair the Rangers split up after the Washington series. Del Zotto will be with Anton Stralman, and the John Moore-Steve Eminger pair remains the same.
The change is likely two-fold: Realizing that the current pairs weren’t working, and that the Rangers have home ice (and last change) for the next two games.

Rangers Really Missing Staal & Clowe

When you're up against a team as physical and as deep as the Bruins, you'd like to have all hands on deck.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, two guys they couldn't afford to not have in the line-up for this series are sidelined indefinitely.

The absence of Marc Staal and Ryane Clowe in this series has been obvious.

Their big bodies and toughness is sorely needed. Way too often I'm watching the Bruins bullying the Rangers with no response.

Think about having Clowe out there to match Milan Lucic's nasty, grinding style and challenge him when needed. Or Marc Staal being paired with Dan Girardi to form a shutdown pair that wouldn't allow players like Brad Marchand and Gregory Campbell to roam free in front of the net. Plus it would allow John Tortorella to cut Michael Del Zotto's minutes.

I also think they would have been able to help the Rangers anemic power play. Staal's puck moving ability is sorely needed on the man advantage as the R...

Until Marc Staal comes back, the defense will struggle against deep teams

Al Bello/NYDN
Something that was very obvious during yesterday’s loss was that the Rangers defense had a lot of trouble matching up and shutting down the Bruins forwards. Prior to the series, coach John Tortorella swapped his defense pairings to prepare for a much deeper Bruins club. In doing so, he split up Dan Girardi/Ryan McDonagh, and put Girardi with Michael Del Zotto.
Let’s be clear about one thing, Del Zotto is a top-four defenseman in this league. He’s a top-50 guy, which puts him in the upper echelon of second pairing defensemen. He’s not perfect, he’s not going to do well against the top scorers in the league, but he will be able to hold his own. That said, the pairing of Del Zotto/Girardi has never worked. It didn’t work two years ago, it didn’t work last year, it won’t work this year.

Neither defenseman is perfect, and both have flaws that can be easily exploited by smart teams. We saw this last night. Girardi was on the ice for all five goals, and MDZ for four. We can spe

Lundqvist’s shoulder to be looked at, likely won’t miss a beat

On the postgame show last night, it was mentioned that Henrik Lundqvist would have his shoulder looked at today to ensure everything is ok. Hank took a Danielle Paille shot off his shoulder late in yesterday’s 5-2 loss, and remained down on the ice for a short period of time. Hank stayed in the game, and trainer Jim Ramsay never left the bench. Marty Biron didn’t even put on his helmet.
The shot likely hit Hank in a soft spot in the padding, which happens from time to time. We’ve seen Hank take awkward shots and remain in the game. This likely wouldn’t be any different.

John Tortorella speaks after the Rangers Game 2 loss to the Bruins

Video courtesy of our friends at Bruins Daily, stop by and visit their blog, you won't be disappointed. This is one of the longer press conferences you will probably see from New York Rangers head coach John Tortorella. This post game presser lasted a grand total of 02:14, that's pretty impressive if you ask me.

John Tortorella explicitly describes Ryan Callahan's goal

During Game 2 of the Rangers-Bruins Eastern Conference Semifinals series on Sunday, NBC's Pierre McGuire asked Rangers coach John Tortorella how to describe Ryan Callahan, who scored a goal in the first period to tie the game at one goal apiece. Tortorella's response was brief, and extremely descriptive.

"Well right now, that's a HUGE goddamn goal he scored in the first period."

McGuire then thanked Tortorella and immediately ended the interview, likely with the horror of realizing that New York's coach had sworn on national TV. There were no immediate apologies from the NBC crew, and they essentially called Tortorella a wild card. These things happen sometimes, and seeing McGuire immediately have to squirm his way out of an uncomfortable situation is always entertaining to watch.

Rangers Coach John Tortorella freaks out on referee Dan O’Halloran

New York Rangers coach John Tortorella lost his temper on referee Dan O’Halloran after the second period ended when a punch to captain Ryan Callahan’s head was not called. You can’t read Tortorella’s lips too well, but you can tell that it is an f-bomb laced tirade and he is clearly not asking O’Halloran to grab a beer with him after the game.

No Staal; Moore Loses Teeth; Off Ice Adjustments Needed; Redden Game Time Decision

Same lines same d-pairs for Rangers. No Marc Staal on ice. Matt Gilroy is the seventh d-man on ice.

...and Staal not practicing with the team is exactly why I didn't get excited about him skating yesterday. I've all but stopped expecting him back in the playoffs.

...no news on Clowe isn't very encouraging either. Haven't even heard that he's in Boston with the team working out. Not good.

Arthur Staple at Newsday notes that John Moore lost six teeth (two upper, four lower) in Game 1 after taking a puck to the face.

...who says hockey players aren't the toughest of all the professional athletes?

Meanwhile, in his post practice press conference John Tortorella, after stating that the power play stinks and that Carl Hagelin might be inserted on one of the units, hinted that the team needs to make adjustments on and off the ice (via Bergen Record)...

Adam Oates Says He Could ‘Easily’ Beat Up John Tortorella

John Tortorella has a reputation of rubbing people the wrong way. Add Capitals’ Head Coach Adam Oates to that ever growing list. After Tortorella’s Rangers eliminated Oates’ Capitals in 7 games, Tortorella accused the Caps of whining too much. The Capitals were upset with the officiating, especially in game 6 which took place at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers were not penalized once in the game and the Capitals accrued 5 misdemeanors. Today, Oates sat down with Washington’s 106.7 The Fan to talk about his Capitals. Of course he was asked to respond to Torts’ accusation. When asked by LaVar [Arrington} and [Chad] Dukes what he thinks about Torts openly trashing his team, he had a response ready to go. “Well, I think he’s out of line,” Oates said. “He should be worried about his own series. We didn’t whine once during the series. I never complained. I don’t know, did you guys ever hear me complain about officiating?” “Not you, no,” Chad Dukes answered. “No? Ovi did after Game S

Rangers Head Coach John Tortorella yearbook photo emerges

With the New York Rangers-Boston Bruins second round playoff series getting ready to start Thursday night, Rangers head coach John Tortorella’s yearbook photo emerged on the Internet. The photo itself isn’t a big deal but a lot of the information above the photo raises a lot of questions. When did someone add the “s” to his nickname to make it “Torts?” What does B.D.W.B. mean? And most importantly, where is Musky? Is Musky a person or a place? This is definitely one of the funnier yearbook entries and I can’t wait for a reporter to ask him about some of the information in it to see what kind of reaction Tortorella gives.
