SD State guard Wolters back in national spotlight

(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By DIRK LAMMERS Associated Press South Dakota State guard Nate Wolters has always been a quiet Midwestern kid who leads by example.

But it's hard to avoid the spotlight scoring 53 points in a game.

Wolters' high school coach Randy Jordan says there's no player he'd rather see with the ball in the final seconds when the Jackrabbits take on fourth-seed Michigan in the first round of the NCAA tournament Thursday.

Jordan says when St. Cloud Tech needed a bucket, Wolters seemed to always have the ball and make the right decision.

Wolters began garnering national attention last year when the Jackrabbits made their first trip to the NCAA tournament. The 6-foot-4 senior became a sensation again in February when he scored a school-record 53 points against IPFW.

Opposition Q&A: Argus Leader’s Terry Vandrovec on South Dakota State

Terry Vandrovec is the South Dakota State beat reporter for the Argus Leader and he agreed to answer a couple of questions about the Jackrabbits and Thursday’s upcoming NCAA tournament game. You can find his work at the paper, on his blog or on Twitter. Terry wouldn’t go as far as picking an upset but does think that the Jackrabbits have what it takes to give Michigan a fight.
I guess I have to ask about Nate Wolters first. His statistics are impressive and that’s coming from someone who has watched Trey Burke play all season. Does he have a weakness? Has he struggled against any certain match-ups this season?
Coming into the season, there were questions about Wolters’ jump shot and his defense. He answered the first by regaining the shooting percentage of his sophomore season; he’s addressed the second more sporadically. Still, Coach Scott Nagy has accepted the blame for that, claiming that Wolters is one of the best defenders in the conference. It’s just that he plays so many min...

Michigan gets South Dakota State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The good news for Michigan is that they only have to travel to the Palace of Auburn Hills to start the NCAA tournament.

The bad news is that Nate Wolters will be waiting for them.

The 4th-seeded Wolverines will face 13th-seeded South Dakota State Thursday. The Jackrabbits, who play in the Summit League alongside Oakland University, are led by the high-scoring guard who scored 53 points against IPFW in February.

If Michigan advances, they will play the winner of the Akron-Virginia Commonwealth game Saturday at the Palace.

For the second year in a row the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State will be hopping into the NCAA Tournament.

McDermott has received national attention to the point where he is being considered for national player of the year honors.

You don't see Wolters on national publications and rarely on television outside the Summit League territory. Sure Tuesday night Wolters got some attention across the country with the Summit League title game and had a great performance.

If you a looking for a breakout star in the upcoming NCAA Tournament Wolters just might be that guy.

Last year the Jackrabbits lost to Baylor in the second round of the NCAA Tournament 68-60 and Wolters had 19 points. Had S...

South Dakota State earns NCAA berth

Nate Wolters struggled to get his chances for most of the game. Once he did, the Summit League's player of the year proved worthy of the title and added another - tournament MVP.

Wolters scored 18 of his 27 points in the second half to lead South Dakota State past North Dakota State 73-67 on Tuesday night in the Summit League tournament finals.

The victory sends the Jackrabbits (25-9) to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.

The Bison held South Dakota State to 47.9 percent shooting overall, and Kory Brown and TrayVonn Wright played Wolters tight to hold him to nine points in the first half.

''It's tough to find any driving lanes out there,'' Wolters said. ''My team did a great job picking me up.''

Jordan Dykstra had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Jackrabbits, a performance that head coach Scott Nagy praised.

''He was physical. He was active,'' Nagy said. ''He showed up in a big moment tonight.''

Wolters is a smart ballhandler, using both hands well, and using a variety of dribbles to try and get the defense off-balance. Wolters protects the ball well, though he does have a tendency to overdribble at times, which eventually can leave him open to turning the ball over, especially against some pressure. He prefers to make his moves with his right hand to the right side, and if he goes left, you will usually see him look to kick it out to the perimeter. He doesn’t use a lot of speed, but he uses a good hesitation dribble as well

Kendal Shell scores career high in SDSU thrashing

Hey, the first (and likely only) Kendal Shell headline that will ever occur! It wasn’t the highlight of the game, but in a relatively boring, Wolters-less victory over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, Mr. End-of-the-Bench scored a career high four points in garbage time as the Gophers destroyed SDSU 88-64 and continued to outpace their [...]

S. Dakota State's Wolters out at No. 14 Minnesota

South Dakota State guard Nate Wolters has been ruled out of the game at No. 14 Minnesota.

The senior shooting guard has been bothered by an ankle injury. He was on the court for warmups on Tuesday night, but freshman Jake Bittle was in the starting lineup instead.

The 6-foot-3 Wolters, who led the Jackrabbits to their first NCAA tournament appearance last season, missed out on his last opportunity to play in his home state. He went to St. Cloud Tech High School, about a 90-minute drive from the Minnesota campus.

In 2011-12, Wolters became just the fifth player in NCAA history to average at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game in a season.

Robinson: I should be No. 1 over Davis

It seems that Thomas Robinson from the Kansas isn’t buying into the Anthony Davis love and is letting everyone know that he should be the #1 selection at the end of the month in the NBA Draft. Which is kinda odd considering that Robinson isn’t necessarily a consensus at #2 overall. While at the Draft [...]
