Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Briere, World Championship QFs

Is Briere Tradable?

It is almost inevitable that Danny Briere will not be a member of the Philadelphia Flyers next year. The only question is whether he will be bought out or traded. The former is the more likely scenario.

Briere has a no-movement clause in his contract, which includes an all-inclusive no-trade. As such, Briere does not have to accept any trade he doesn't feel is in his bes...

Bryzgalov praises Stalin in interview

To most people, former Russian dictator Joseph Stalin is remembered as a man responsible for the deaths of tens of millions, a reviled figure who saw no need for human rights. To Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, however, there's a "logic" to the plans of the man who instigated several "purges."

Suffice it to say, Bryzgalov is a weird guy, and he appeared to be going further off the ledge by the day late in the NHL season. Beyond bizarre behavior such as trying out as a cosmonaut and giving his odd thoughts on the Russian meteor , more recently Bryzgalov has gone after the Philadelphia media. He recently called the Philly hockey media corps "lunatics" after the season ended, and said that he'd rather watch Star Wars than playoff hockey .

Most unforgivable of all, Bryzgalov said that he prefers the Star Wars prequels to the original trilogy.

Now, however, Bryzgalov may have gone from, at best, lovable lunatic and entered Ozzie Guillen territory. He recently

Ilya Bryzgalov Says Very Ilya Bryzgalov Things

Ilya Bryzgalov is more than just a grossly overpaid goalie. He’s an existential stormtrooper, an avid Angry Birds player, and apparently a big Josef Stalin fan. Whatever your thoughts on his play may be, it is hard to argue that Bryz is an absolute treasure trove of quirk and is fun to listen to. Whether it be his dislike for the weather in Edmonton: or this unbelievably smooth segue from Russian Liqueur, to Tigers, to Chinese Law: Bryz’s latest stunt came when he sat down to speak with Championat, a Russian sports website about things, uh, other than hockey. The Russian goaltender talked about his favorite cities in North America, real estate, and of course his favorable view of Josef Stalin. Here is a choice snippet of the piece. All journalists try to interview you. And is there a person who you would like to talk to? “A lot of them are not alive anymore… I would love to talk to Genghis Khan, Stalin, Einstein.” Stalin is a very controversial figure. How do you feel about hi...

On April 24, 2011 – my 24th birthday – the Philadelphia Flyers gave me a gift. A 5-4 win over Buffalo sent the teams’ first-round playoff series to a seventh game. Rooting interest didn’t make the win gift-worthy. At that point – like now – the winner was of little significance.
Ilya Bryzgalov Gives Up Goal By Ducking Out Of The Way

Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov is spending his off season playing for the Russian National team in the IIHF world championship. In a matchup against the United States, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Matt Hunwick fired a shot on Bryzgalov which was deflected.
The next thing that happened is kind of mind boggling.
Instead of making a play on the puck after the deflection, Bryzgalov ducked, covering his head with his hands. The puck sailed just over his turtle shell for the goal.
The Philadelphia Flyers goaltender struggled this season ranking 32nd in the league with a 2.79 GAA. The Flyers missed the postseason for only the second time since the 1994-95 season.

Ilya Bryzgalov ducks puck on USA goal at World Championships

Every year NHL players on teams that don’t make the playoffs fill out rosters for the IIHF World Championships, as well as players from other leagues in Europe. With the Philadelphia Flyers missing the playoffs, goalie Ilya Bryzgalov went overseas to play for Russia and he is up to his old habits.
On a shot from USA defenseman Matt Hunwick (Colorado Avalanche), the puck was deflected in front of the net and went towards Bryzgalov’s head. Bryzgalov ducked the shot and the puck went into the net. I have a feeling that Bryzgalov’s time in Philadelphia is coming to an end and he is going to have to fix this new habit he has picked up. You can’t be afraid to get hit in the face with a puck when you’re a goalie, that’s what a mask is for.
The USA games at the IIHF World Championships are being televised on NBC Sports Network, so be sure to tune in.

Flyers Sign Goaltender Chubak To Deal

As the Philadelphia Flyers season wrapped up disappointingly early this year, the team’s front office has had ample time to concentrate on adding personnel. On Saturday they hit the college hockey free agent market, in hopes of shoring up their goaltending for the future.
Philadelphia came to terms with 24 year-old goalie Carsen Chubak on an AHL contract (as confirmed by Bill Meltzer). Chubak spent the past three seasons with the Niagara University Purple Eagles of the Atlantic Hockey division. In 35 games in 2013 he boasted a 1.91 GAA (eighth best in the NCAA) and a save percentage of .939 (fourth best in the NCAA) while helping the Purple Eagles land the top spot in Atlantic Hockey. And for his strong play, the honors came pouring in for the Saskatchewan native.
He was named the Atlantic Hockey Association’s player of the year, and was a top ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, which is given to the NCAA’s top hockey performer each seas...

Offseason Questions: Who Stays and Who Goes?

With a disappointing season over with, the Flyers now have
the difficult task of assessing what areas of the squad they need to
change. With several options available,
the team’s General Manager Paul Holmgren will undoubtedly attempt to make a
splash like last year, but with a lot of long and pricey contracts in the
stable, will they be left to chew on the hay they have harvested?
Since the recent Collective Bargaining agreement the league
and its players association signed, the team has the ability to cast out two
contracts they deem to be detrimental to team development. After the team has
acquired once-promising goaltender Steve Mason, Ilya Bryzgalov is a likely
candidate for this very “amnesty” program.

With Bryzgalov apparently on the way out, it’s time to take
a look at the team’s roster and the possible moves the team can make.
To be sure, none of this is definitive. It could turn out that Bryzgalov stays.
Definitely Staying

Ilya Bryzgalov Reportedly Has No Interest in Watching Playoff Hockey, Would Rather See ‘Star Wars’ With Son

Ilya Bryzgalov has long had a fascination with Star Wars and hockey, but now he has made it clear in which order he prefers them.
The Flyers goaltender admitted recently that he hasn’t been watching much playoff hockey since the Flyers failed to qualify for any, and when elaborating, answered as only he could.
“There’s no time,” Bryzgalov explained, “and no real interest. I’d rather watch Star Wars with my son.”
Bryz made news earlier this season involving the sci-fi franchse when he was asked by Lucasfilm to fix the lightsaber color painted on his goalie mask with Yoda, so he’s clearly a big fan. It’s hard to blame Bryzgalov for doing right by his family, then — as long as he sticks to the original movie trilogy.

During the end-of-year locker cleanout, Philadelphia Flyers’ general manager Paul Holmgren told reporters that the organization was looking to rebuild with the former in mind.

Salvaging Positives from the 2013 Philadelphia Flyers

It goes without saying that this season left much to be desired. However, I have compiled a list of reasons to be excited for the Flyers in the 2013-2014 season based on bright spots from this disappointing 2013 campaign. They are ordered from 5 to 1, with 1 being the most promising. If you disagree, voice your opinion in the comments below and let us know which order you would place them in, or if you beleive there are a few things I may have overlooked.

5: Up-and-Coming Prospects

Excluding the young players who have already spent a season at the professional level, the Flyers have plenty of talent who are earning valuable experience, most notably at either the CHL or NCAA levels. Scott Laughton headlines the list, followed by Anthony Stolarz, Nick Cousins, Petr Straka, and Shayne Gostisbehere. Laughton is the only one of these players who is expected to have a strong chance at an opening day roster spot in October. Cousins could make his NHL debut later next season, as most ...

With the 11th Pick of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers Select...

It really isn't that clear who the best selection will be. There are a number of quality players who should be available when the Flyers are on the clock. After reading three mock drafts on NHL.com (they assumed Philadelphia would pick 8th), it seems that Adam Kimmelman, Mike Morreale, and Steven Hoffner all have made their picks based on the team's obvious need: a physical defenseman.
Although this is a very glaring need, I believe that the Flyers should make their pick based on the "best player available" philosophy. These are the players who I believe could fall in the 9-13 range who could make a difference after a season or two of development, if not immediately:
Rasmus Ristolainen: D, TPS Turku, SM-liiga
Ristolainen is a big two-way defenseman who plays with a physical edge. At 6'3" and 207 lbs, he is very similar in stature to the top-ranked North American skater, Seth Jones. Ristolainen's 2012-2013 stats are not very impressive. In 52 games play...

Ilya Bryzgalov Calls Flyers Reporters ‘Lunatics,’ Their Writing ‘Ridiculous’ in Farewell Interview (Video)

Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov and his ridiculous contract likely won’t have to deal with the Philadelphia media next season, so the netminder made his interview on Sunday night count.
In typical Bryz fashion, he awkwardly gave the scribes a lesson on professionalism after calling some of them “lunatics” and their writing “ridiculous.”
“It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous,” he repeated. “Sometimes you read [an article] and it’s like ‘oh my God, who is this lunatic?’ Because it’s noting close to the truth or closely related to hockey. You read this and think ‘oh my God,I have to deal with these people everyday.’”
Check out what was likely his last interview as a Flyer below.

Flyers keep Laviolette as coach

The Philadelphia Flyers have failed to win a Stanley Cup since 1975.

But they're at least in the hunt.

Not this year. Not after the Flyers failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007 and only the second time since 1995.

Any offseason shakeups needed to mold the Flyers back into a contender won't include changing the coach.

Peter Laviolette has another chance to win the Cup with the Flyers, and will return for his fifth season with a chance to prove this was a one-year blip and not the start of downward spiral for the franchise.

''We're not in the playoffs, so we all underperformed,'' Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said Sunday. ''Players, coaches, myself. And we've got to get better. I'm not unhappy with the coaches. I think they did a good job under the circumstances. But we're sitting here today talking and the playoffs are going to start in two days and we're not in them, so that's not good.''

This Flyer's got an eye for fashion

Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov has already carved out a niche as one of the more quirky athletes in sports. After all, this is a guy who trained as a cosmonaut in Russia during the NHL lockout -- and that might not be the weirdest thing he's done.

But Bryzgalov's latest antics, which took place in the Flyers' locker room on Wednesday, may be his best, if creepiest, work yet.

In a moment of levity during his media session Wednesday in Philadelphia, in advance of the Flyers' final home game Thursday, Bryzgalov paused after a question about his future with the franchise and shifted his focus toward Comcast Sports reporter Lisa Hillary.

Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov when asked if he wanted to return next year. Turning to female reporter he said, "Nice blouse."

-- Rob Parent (@ReluctantSE) April 24, 2013 Q: Do you want to stay here next year? Bryzgalov: (randomly to female reporter) Nice blouse. (long pause) What? (pause) Of course!
