Pittsburgh created a goal light out of a 44-story building

Whenever the Pittsburgh Penguins score a goal in the playoffs the 44-story Gulf Tower in downtown Pittsburgh will transform into a massive goal light. That's right, the idea that's been talked about for ages in a variety of cities has finally taken hold. As seen in the short video below, a rotating red light illuminates the top of the building, mimicking a goal lamp.

	Pittsburgh Penguins on WhoSay

Normally the lights on the top of the building serve as a fancy, yet awesome way to see exactly what's going on with the weather. However, this isn't the first time the building's lights have been connected to sports as the lights have been flashed when the Pittsburgh Pirates hit a home run.

This entire concept is awesome. Well played Pittsburgh.

Crosby records hat trick in Game 2 win

Sidney Crosby‘s game is clicking on all cylinders, and that’s bad news for the rest of the NHL. Crosby recorded the second playoff hat trick of his career as the Penguins built an early lead in Game 2 against the Senators then held off an Ottawa rally to win 4-3. Pittsburgh now holds a 2-0 advantage in the teams’ Eastern Conference semifinal series, with the Senators now needing a win at home in Game 3 to avoid falling into the treacherous 3-0 hole. Check out all three of Crosby’s tallies in the video below.

Evgeni Malkin skated with James Neal to his left and Iginla to his right.

Marc-André Fleury: A quandary for Pittsburgh, a headache for Canada

From Roy MacGregor of the Toronto Globe and Mail:

Three Dog Night had it all wrong.

One is not the loneliest number. It’s 29.

No. 29, also known as Marc-André Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins, is on the ice at Consol Energy Center. He is skating between Zambonis as they re-surface the ice: crouched over, head bowed, deep in thought that does not require a mind-reader to decipher.

What the hell has gone wrong?

Fleury is, or at least is supposed to be, the starting goaltender for what has been the strongest NHL team in the Eastern Conference. He is supposed to stop the pucks while Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jarome Iginla, and a cast of other hockey stars fire pucks into the opposition nets. He is supposed to backstop the Penguins to the 2013 Stanley Cup prior to taking over the net as Team Canada defends its Olympic gold medal in Sochi next February.

That was the dream, the plan – but recently it has gone off the rails.

Vokoun starting in goal for Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins are sticking with goaltender Tomas Vokoun for Game 1 of their second-round playoff series against Ottawa on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old Vokoun replaced struggling starter Marc-Andre Fleury and won Games 5 and 6 of Pittsburgh's first-round playoff series with the New York Islanders last week. He stopped 66 of the 69 shots he faced against the Islanders as the Penguins advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals for the first time in three years.

The start will be the 713th of Vokoun's career but his first this deep in the playoffs. He went 1-0 against the Senators this year, allowing just one goal in a 3-1 Pittsburgh victory last month.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Ottawa Senators 2013 Playoff Predictions

There are many questions the Penguins need to answer going into round two against the Ottawa Senators. The biggest question is who’s going to be the goaltender that stands up in between the pipes. Will it be the playoff experienced Marc-Andre Fleury or the hot guy right now Tomas Vokoun?

We’ve put together an incredible group of writers to predict how the series will pan out and at the same time throw a little insight into what the Penguins will have to do to win. Six of the writers have followed the Penguins since the 1970′s, two of them have been season ticket holders since then. The writers here at PenguinPoop have been to more Penguins games than any other group of writers on the internet.
First up:

Penguins Update: Bylsma Pushes the Right Buttons

There’s an old adage in sports—ride the horse that brung ya.’ (Or something like that.) Thank goodness Penguins coach Dan Bylsma paid it no mind as filled out his lineup card for Thursday’s critical Game 5 matchup with the pesky New York Islanders.
I’ve been critical of the Pens’ skipper in the past for what I felt were questionable personnel moves. But last night he made the Dean’s List.
First and foremost, Bylsma had the courage to bench a wilting Marc-Andre Fleury in favor of backup goalie Tomas Vokoun. He also had the good sense to announce the switch well in advance so the team had time to mentally prepare.
Making his first playoff start since 2007, the 36-year-old Czech was terrific. Not only did Vokoun slam the door on the Islanders, but his steadiness and composure between the pipes rubbed off on the rest of the team.
That move alone would’ve earned Bylsma straight A’s. However, he made several other adjustments that reaped significant dividends. The Bowling Green grad shift...

Isles Fans Can't Even Insult Sidney Crosby Correctly

Big brouhaha since Pens-Isles Game 4. The game where Sid, early in his 3rd game back from jaw surgery, took a puck to the throat just under his fishbowl jaw protector. Isles fans not only cheered the injury in unison, a bad enough showing, they used "Princess Crosby" chants which tend to incite calls of sexism because haha you're calling him a woman which is lesser than a man.

Barstool Sports got on Sporting News writer Jesse Spector's case, since Spector called out the Isles fans and Barstool responded with typical bravado. "You called a man a woman and also insulted an injury" vs. "MAN UP THIS IS HOW THINGS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN," with just a touch of that Philly anti-Sid irrationality in the latter camp. You know, where apparently Sid is a flopper when Nabby is jumping around like a pogo stick and only an Islander has been called for diving this series.

Anyway, I'm not here to sway you to either side. I'm an admitted Sid fan, and y...

Sidney Crosby, Penguins Demolish Islanders in Blowout-Filled Night of Hockey (Videos)

Wednesday night’s playoff games provided a slate of thrilling hockey. All four games were decided by a single goal, with three of them requiring overtime. Thursday night? Not so much.
The Penguins were on the winning end of one of the three blowouts on the evening, thrashing Evgeni Nabokov and the Islanders to take a 3-2 lead in their opening-round series. After a scoreless first period, Sidney Crosby provided the exclamation point on a three-goal second, splitting two Isles defenseman before beating Nabokov blocker-side.
Check out Crosby’s beauty in the video below.

C’mon, Nabby
Crosby’s score was nifty, but the Penguins didn’t need grade-A shots to beat Nabokov on Thursday.
The Isles netminder allowed four goals before being yanked in the third period, and none was worse than this one off the stick of Pittsburgh’s Douglas Murray. Murray’s shot from the point was on a trajectory to hit Nabokov right in the chest, but it nicked off the top of the goalie’...

Video: Sidney Crosby Goes All Mario Lemieux On The Islanders

Here is Sidney Crosby & Mario Lemieux’s goal side by side. Crosby’s amazing goal was almost identical to the goal that Mario Lemieux scored against the Islanders then had bronzed outside the Consol Energy Center. Also, videos of the goal from on 3 other broadcasts including the Islanders broadcast where they say Crosby did nothing all night, when it was the Islanders who were victim of posing for another statue. Love it!

Malkin Could Use Some Help

Penguins leading scorer in this young playoff season, Evgeni Malkin, has gotten a reputation in the NHL. It’s not a good one. It is the same reputation that Sidney Crosby had a few years ago and he’s having a little trouble shaking it.
Every team knows right now that they can throw Malkin off his game by getting in his face. Crosby had these problems at the beginning of his career. Crosby was a hot head for a year or two and eventually was able to battle it off verbally most of the time and eventually learned to use it to his advantage. Seriously how hard is it to say “Ha that’s funny”, “I make 12 Million a year before endorsements and own just about every trophy the NHL has invented, what do you got”
For Malkin it’s a bit of a different story. English being his second language, a battle of verbal linguistics is not his forte. He has no problem coming back physically and that’s what gets him trouble.
Malkin is #2 in penalty minutes this post season among the top 50 scorers.

Are These the Last Days of Fleury in Pittsburgh?

Will Fleury get a chance to redeem himself? The announcement that Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury will sit out his first NHL playoff game in favor of Tomas Vokoun may signal the end of the “Flower” as a Penguin. After faltering in the post season each year since the Penguins Stanley Cup win in 2009, [...]

Benching Fleury Solves Only One of Penguins Many Problems

While Penguins goaltender Marc-André Fleury has rightfully bore the brunt of the load for last nights loss. The puck doesn’t stop there. Literally and figuratively.
Penguins coach Dan Bylsma sat before reporters last night and was asked “.. is there any thought to putting Vokoun in for game five?” After he him-hawed around for 5 minutes and proceeded to list every goal Fleury let in and mentioning how Fleury managed to let them in on so few amount of shots, Bylsma somehow avoided the question. Or so he thought.
A second later he was asked again. “Any thought to a change of goalie?”
“Certainly you know a Thomas Vokoun’s a guy that can step in and play and has had success..” Bylsma proceeded with his spiel “and won hockey games against this team (Islanders) and has been successful this year..“ He continued to avoid the question again, but everyone had heard what they needed to hear.
I have heard Bylsma’s “spiels” for years now. Barring injury, Thomas Vokoun will be in

Marc-Andre Fleury Once Again Weak Link for Penguins on Night Full of Goaltender Injuries, Intrigue (Videos)

Marc-Andre Fleury won the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins back in 2009. That will feel like a lifetime ago for many Penguins fans on Tuesday night, after watching Fleury beat by the surprising New York Islanders.
Since 2005, Fleury has the 22nd-best save percentage among goalies with at least 200 starts, and he looked like the 22nd-best goalie in the arena at the Nassau Coliseum. Punctuated by a Casey Cizikas goal in the closing minutes, Fleury’s performance was anything but Stanley Cup-caliber, and it will certainly have Penguins fans clamoring for Tomas Vokoun in a pivotal Game 5 back at the CONSOL Energy Center.
Then again, there wasn’t much that Fleury could do against John Tavares in what ended up being the game-winning goal. Check it out in the video below.
