Kevin Freiheit: Miller's destination...

Not much going on in regards to Sabres news other than the re-signing of John Scott. I've been waiting for him to score a goal and I really hope he does next season.

I'm not a big fan of Scott, but he'll fight and bring up the team toughness.

I hate that the Sabres are quiet right now, but now it's back to waiting. Waiting for them to make another move. Many of you have been trying to fi...

GARTH: Roycky Mountain High

The Buffalo Sabres passes on the opportunity to hire Quebec Remparts head coach, Patrick Roy. Late Monday night, news broke in Denver that Roy will be the next head coach of Colorado Avalanche. Adrian Dater of the Denver Post could not get confirmation, nor denial, that Joe Sakic and the Avs brass will be naming Roy as their next head coach. However, he was able to get some insight from Roy's y...

Sabres re-sign John Scott to deal

The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed rugged fourth-line forward John Scott to a one-year contract.

Listed at 6-foot-8 and 270 pounds, Scott had no points and 69 penalty minutes in 34 games last season. The Sabres acquired Scott by signing him to a one-year contract in free agency last summer to add size and grit to their roster.

He split the 2011-12 season with Chicago and the New York Rangers. He broke into the NHL in 2008-09, and played his first two seasons with the Minnesota.

Over five seasons, Scott has a goal and four assists and 305 penalty minutes in 180 career games.

The team announced the signing on Monday morning.

The Pegula Story Nobody Wants to Talk Abou

Terry Pegula bought the Buffalo Sabres in January of 2011 for $189 million. There were reports that another bid was higher previously, but that buyer would have moved the Sabres out of Buffalo (report here). While the Sabres leaving Buffalo may not have been a real option, Pegula did save the Sabres franchise, and the surrounding community, in a way.

By keeping the Sabres in Buffalo, Pegula also kept the hockey team’s economic impact in the area. The table below is a breakdown from the State Comptroller’s office, estimating the annual impact the Sabres have on the Buffalo-Niagara region.

The Sabres positively affect our economy by $65 million per season plus another $2 million per home playoff game. Without them, the Buffalo-Niagara region would have only one major sports team, the Bills, lose $65 million from the local economy, and give us nothing to do in the winter. Luckily for us, Pegula stepped forward and is keeping the Sabres in Buffalo for the long haul.

Sweden wins world hockey title

Sweden became the first home team to win the world hockey championships in 27 years, beating Switzerland 5-1 on Sunday for its ninth title.

Vancouver Canucks star Henrik Sedin had two goals and an assist, and Buffalo Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth made 26 saves to help Sweden become the first team to win the title on home ice since the Soviet Union in 1986. Switzerland earned its first medal in 60 years.

Simon Hjalmarrson, Philadelphia's Erik Gustafsson and Dallas' Loui Eriksson also scored for Sweden. Romas Josi had the lone goal for Switzerland.

In the third-place game, the United States beat Finland 3-2 in a shootout for its first medal in nine years. Montreal's Alex Galchenyuk scored consecutive goals in the shootout for the Americans, and Nashville's Craig Smith and Colorado's Paul Stastny had first-period goals.

John Gibson, a 19-year-old goalie for the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League, made 36 saves.

Jhonas Enroth Backs Sweden To World Championship

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – MAY 19: Sweden’s Jhonas Enroth #1 prepares to make a save during gold medal game action at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. (Photo by Richard Wolowicz/HHOF-IIHF Images)
With Ryan Miller’s future in Buffalo in limbo, Sabres fans were able to get a better look at the man who would be Miller’s likely replacement should he be moved on a grander stage.
Jhonas Enroth was given the reigns to lead team Sweden into the IIHF World Championship tournament as its number one goaltender, and didn’t disappoint. With a 26 saves on 27 shots, Enroth backstopped the Swedes to gold at the 2013 World Championship with a 5-1 win over Switzerland on Sunday.
It was a performance, finishing 6-1 at championships, that made many more comfortable about Enroth if/when he takes over as Buffalo’s number one goaltender.

GARTH: Enroth MVP

Jhonas Enroth is maing a strong case to be named MVP of the IIHF World Hockey Championships.

Enroth is 5-1 with two shutouts, .955 save % and a 1.17 GAA.

Knowing the ultra competitive Swede the way I do, he'd probably say "who cares" about the MVP. The only thing Enroth wants to have and hold onto forever is the gold medal.

Its well within his grasp right now.

Am I the only one who misses playoff hockey in Buffalo? It's not often one can wear shorts heading into the First Niagara Center with a hockey game to go to. Then again, I don't think the Sabres could compete in a 7 game series with most of these playoff teams. There's plenty of work to do.
Sabres have trade chips on the wings

It’s a time of turnover in Hockey Purgatory Heaven with Lindy Ruff getting his walking papers while Jordan Leopold, Jason Pominville and Robyn Regehr each were shipped out of town before the deadline. It appears as if this summer will bring about more change via the trade market for the Sabres as they continue their rebuild.

One key for the Sabres will be finding partners as they search for options to swap out certain players. There have been specific mentions of the need to find more offense from media members in Vancouver, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Nashville. These came from either interviews or game broadcasts on the NHL Network station on XM Radio. Obviously these aren’t confirmed rumors, but the need for more established offensive weapons on certain teams isn’t a difficult conclusion to draw.

Vancouver’s second-straight first round exit have some asking if they need offensive help.

Report: Rolston Adds Roque To Staff

Roque has worked as an assistant with Rolston in the past © CCHA
New full-time Buffalo Sabres head coach isn’t wasting any time when it comes to filling out his staff.
After deciding to keep Teppo Numminen on his staff and relieve James Patrick and Kevyn Adams of their coaching duties, Rolston has begun the process of adding new faces to his staff. The first new face is reportedly Lake Superior State University men’s hockey coach Jim Roque.
Jim Roque is leaving Lake Superior to join the Buffalo Sabres as an assistant. Worked with Ron Rolston at Clarkson from 96-99
— Cap Carey (@CapCareyWDT) May 14, 2013
As the above tweet mentions, Roque worked with Rolston for four years at Clarkson University where they were assistant coaches under Mark Morris. They also worked together at LSSU in 1990.
The team has yet to officially announce the hiring, and no decision has yet to be made on the future of goaltenders coach Jim Corsi.

The Buffalo Sabres goaltending situation is as tenuous as can be after a rocky season that watched the Sabres fire long-time head coach Lindy Ruff on its way to missing the playoffs for the second-straight year.
The Ryan Miller and Jhonas Enroth duo was supposed to be a the pairing that solidified Buffalo’s net. Unfortunately for the Sabres, Miller was peppered with shots all season, and Enroth continued the slide he left off on after last season.... Read more

Report: Sabres fire assistant coaches

The Sabres fired assistant coaches James Patrick and Kevyn Adams on Thursday in the first moves made by newly promoted head coach Ron Rolston.

A person familiar with the decisions confirmed the moves, and spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Sabres have not announced the moves. The Buffalo News first reported the firings on its website earlier in the day.

The changes come two days after Rolston took over the job on a permanent basis. He closed the season going 15-11-5 as the team's interim coach in replacing Lindy Ruff, who was fired in February.

The shuffle does not come as a surprise. Rolston indicated he was going to spend the next few weeks putting together his staff.

Both Patrick and Adams were holdovers from Ruff's tenure, and were both responsible for working behind the bench.

Patrick had completed his seventh season in Buffalo, where he had become Ruff's top assistant. He's a former defenseman who enjoyed a 21-season NHL career split between four teams, including the Sa

Shedding the “Interim” Coat in Buffalo

The Buffalo Sabres decided it was prime time for Interim Coach Ron Rolston to lose his “interim” coat and officially be the Sabres’ head coach in the 2013-2014 season. Rolston becomes the 16th person to take the reins of the Sabres and be their head coach.
Rolston was brought in to serve as the Sabres interim head coach after the team got off to a 6-10-1 start and former bench boss Lindy Ruff was fired. Buffalo posted a 15-11-5 record under Rolston and the team finished 12th in the Eastern Conference. Most Sabres’ fans had been disappointed with the way the season had went.

Rolston will get the opportunity to work with his team from the start of training camp and without the added strain that came with the condensed schedule that we had this year. However, he might find himself coaching a younger team in the beginnings of a rebuild. Hearing the words “rebuilding” is not what some players like Thomas Vanek want to hear.
So, the 29-year-old forward Thomas Vanek suggested it might be ...

Sabres hire Rolston as head coach

The Buffalo Sabres hired Ron Rolston as head coach after he served the interim position following the firing of Lindy Ruff in February.

Rolston and general manager Darcy Regier will hold a news conference Tuesday at First Niagara Center to introduce Rolston, the team said.

Rolston led the Sabres to a 15-11-5 record after Ruff was fired Feb. 20 following a 6-10-1 performance. Ruff spent 16 years as coach of the Sabres and 10 years as a player.

Before being selected interim coach, Rolston had coached the Rochester Americans, Buffalo's AHL affiliate, since 2011.

The Sabres finished 21-21-6 and missed the playoffs for a second straight year and fourth time in six seasons.

At the end-of-season news conference last week, Regier said more ''suffering'' might be in store for Sabres fans before the team can once again be considered a contender. He began a rebuilding plan at the end of last season, and Regier hasn't said if those plans will include keeping goalie Ryan Miller and leading sco

Grading the Sabres: 2013 report card

A fired coach, traded captain, booing fans and missing the playoffs typically doesn’t not make for a very successful season. That was certainly the case for the 2013 Buffalo Sabres.

While there were a few bright spots amongst the doom and gloom, the lockout shortened season is certainly one to forget for the Sabres. Before shutting the door completely I wanted to grade out the team and players on how the year played out.

	Team

Coaching: It had been rumored that Lindy Ruff’s message had grown stale some time ago. Finally, after a number of listless losses, Ruff was fired after nearly two decades coaching the Sabres. Frankly, it just looked like the team had tuned him out and needed a change. While Ron Rolston arrived and helped to energize the roster, his presence wasn’t enough to lift the Sabres back into playoff contention. Entering the offseason, many are wondering if Rolston will have the “interim” tag removed from his title and command the bench for a full season. G...

Sabres' John Scott videobombs interview

via NHL.com video Whatever I say here won’t do justice the little stunt that Buffalo Sabres’ tough guy John Scott pulled during teammate Chad Ruhwedel’s post game interview Sunday. While MSG-Buffalo’s Brian Duff asked Duhwedel about getting a high-stick to the face while not wearing a full shield, Scott grabbed his faux fur coat and got his groove on. Duhwedel had no clue Scott was there. And Duff, who has no doubt seen Scott’s antics before, made no mention of them. The Sabres are currently on the outside looking in in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, but the losing hasn’t seemed to get to them…and I’m sure their fans are stoked about that.
