Double Overtime Game Lost Thanks to Coach Bylsma’s Prevent Defense

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma lost the game last night. It wasn’t a bad play, it wasn’t a better team, it’s wasn’t poor play by his team, it wasn’t the drop play that Bylsma kept referring to in his post game interview.
It was bad coaching.
It is 100% Dan Bylsma’s inability to go for the kill is what lost last night’s double overtime game against the Ottawa Senators. It is not just the matter of the one game. It’s what could have been a 3-0 series with Ottawa’s hope decimated is now a 2-1 series with Ottawa having the momentum swing in their favor.
You would think after losing a game to the Islanders using the same prevent defense plan the Dan Bylsma would have learned his lesson. In his post game interview Bylsma said “We went to a possession powerplay there with the time”. He also mentioned the powerplay line was mid change. It was obvious that he didn’t get the full line change he wanted and perhaps Evgeni Malkin didn’t change like he was supposed to. That is not

Senators rally, stun Penguins in 2OT

Colin Greening scored 7:39 into double overtime, and the Ottawa Senators rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins that cut their series deficit to 2-1 on Sunday night.

Daniel Alfredsson got Ottawa even 1-1 by scoring a short-handed goal with 29 seconds left in regulation just after the Senators pulled goalie Craig Anderson for an extra skater.

''We were just calm,'' Anderson said of the Senators' mood heading into overtime. ''We had tied it up. We had momentum. We felt like the fans really rallied behind us.

''Going into overtime, we knew we just had to build off the momentum and keep the pressure on.''

Anderson made 49 saves, including 18 after regulation. Tomas Vokoun stopped 46 shots for Pittsburgh and took his first loss (4-1) since taking over for No. 1 Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series will be in Ottawa on Wednesday.

Tyler Kennedy scored with just over a minute to play in the second period

WATCH: Colin Greening finishes off 2OT game

Most of us have heard of Daniel Alfredsson, Erik Karlsson, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin; however a relatively unknown hero emerged in game 3. Ottawa Senator Colin Greening put “the biscuit in the basket” and sent the Senators home with a 2-1 double overtime thrilling victory. While Pittsburgh still leads the series 2-1, these are the type of games where a series can begin to tilt into the other teams favor.

(Video) Brooks Orpik hit on Chris Neil

This is the hit that Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik put on Ottawa Senators forward Chris Neil. There was no penalty called on the play, in my opinion, this was a dangerous hit, but not necessarily dirty, but dangerous.

If you're a fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins you probably think this is a good hockey play. If you're a fan of the Senators, you probably wanted a penalty on the play. The head coach of the Ottawa Sentors Paul MacLean didn't like the play and was unhappy about on the players bench. I suppose in the regular season, there might have been a penalty called on the hit, it's a what we call a push check, a form of checking from behind. What do others think of the hit?

Erik Karlsson Delivered An Amazing Skate Pass

Ottawa Senators Erik Karlsson delivered one of the best skate passes I’ve ever seen in a hockey game. During the opening period of Game 3 between the Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins, Karlsson was pushing into Pittsburgh territory when his stick was knocked away from him.
Instead of freaking out, Karlsson continued with the puck underneath his left skate, made a juke move, before completing the pass Kyle Turris who took the shot on goal.

Only Ottawa Cheering For Ottawa

from Rosie DiManno of the Toronto Star,

 Senators Nation? Uh-oh Canada.

The Ottawa Senators may be the only franchise of seven from north of the 49th Parallel still alive and kicking — feebly, to be sure — in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Yet they remain very much a parochial, narrowly embraced entity, a team utterly yoked to one city and one city alone. Further, it’s a city that only civil servants and governance geeks could love.

Our national capital is less loathed than smug Toronto and less parodied than slacker Vancouver but also lesser envied than either. Nor does it possess the small-market virtues of Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg. And it made no friends in at least one of our two Canadian solitudes by handily dispatching Montreal in the first round.

This is not a town that will spiritually stitch together the country’s diverse parts through the unifying force of hockey.

A pair of road losses in Pittsburgh have washed away Ottawa's margin for error. To get back in the series, Ottawa will have to defend home ice against a Penguins team that's firing on all cylinders.

The team's hoping that the return of a familiar face from injury can aid them in their uphill climb: centerman Jason Spezza, out of commission since Janu...

This is a pretty huge deal for the Ottawa Senators. Jason Spezza will be back for game three. From the Montreal Gazette:

It might be a lot to ask, but the Ottawa Senators are hopeful Jason Spezza will be just what they need to get back into their playoff series with Pittsburgh.

Spezza, who hasn't played since January 27 after undergoing back surgery for a herniated disc, will draw into Ottawa's lineup Sunday for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series that the Penguins lead 2-0.

"I'm excited to have a chance to play again," said Spezza. "I feel ready to play."

The 29-year-old will immediately add depth to a struggling offence and power play.

Spezza could drastically improve the Senators' fortunes.

Jason Spezza doesn't have much time to return to form if the Ottawa Senators want to extend their season.

The star forward hasn't played since Jan. 27 after undergoing back surgery for a herniated disk. He'll rejoin Ottawa's lineup Sunday for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Senators trailing 2-0 to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

''I'm excited to have a chance to play again,'' Spezza said. ''I feel ready to play.''

He will immediately add depth to a struggling offense and power play.

''We're excited about the skill that he brings back to our team and we're looking forward to it,'' said Senators coach Paul MacLean. ''We certainly feel that he's going to give us some help on the power play, for sure. He can help us quite a bit there.''

The Senators' power play has gone 1 for 7 through the first two games.

Spezza's minutes will be monitored, and MacLean suggested his time on the ice c

Sid's trick gives Pens 2-0 lead

Sidney Crosby recorded his second career playoff hat trick and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Ottawa Senators 4-3 on Friday night to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Brenden Morrow added his first playoff goal in more than five years, Tomas Vokoun made 19 saves and the Penguins rode their superstar captain to their fourth straight victory.

Crosby beat Craig Anderson three times in the game's first 22 minutes, sending the goalie to the bench after stopping 18 of 21 shots.

Kyle Turris, Colin Greening and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored for the Senators, but couldn't stop Ottawa from falling into a deep hole against the Eastern Conference's top seed. The Senators have never won a playoff series after dropping the first two games.

Game 3 is Sunday in Ottawa.

The Senators insisted they didn't have to play a perfect game to hang with the Penguins, pointing to the way they controlled play at even strength for long stretches in a 4-1 loss in the series opener Tuesday night. Otta

Spezza Could Play On Sunday

from Bruce Garrioch of Off The Posts,

A source told the Sun Spezza is targeting a Sunday return, but has to get clearance from the doctors.

“He continues to skate on a daily basis and makes progress,” said MacLean Friday. “We’ll go through practice (Saturday) and the pre-game skate and we’ll see where it is. If he’s available to us, it’s Jason Spezza, we’re going to have him in the lineup.”

The Senators will have an optional skate Saturday and Spezza will skate with that group.

“I know I’m going to be there to watch it,” said MacLean. “I might not be on the ice, but we’ll make a decision from there. I don’t know about all the medical hurdles but I’ll know more about that (Saturday).”

Don Cherry thinks the Senators are a bit feminine

That didn't take long. The second round just got underway and Don Cherry already said something that angered fans, specifically those supporting the Ottawa Senators. What did he say this time? He ripped on the Ottawa Senators for a variety of things outside of their play on the ice, alluding to the fact that they have some feminine qualities.

Cherry slams Daniel Alfredsson for his hair and the fact he wears a barrette to keep his long locks out of his face. He also calls out a group of Senators for their lack of focus, claiming they're too busy talking about fashion while treating us all to a somewhat horrifying fake female voice.

No one will argue the Senators lacked focus and intensity in their Game 1 loss, but are we really stooping to the level where it's appropriate to call out a player for his hair or claim players are giggling about fashion on the bench? How a player elects to wear his hair, along with what goes in it, is up to him. Feel free to ridicule ...

The Ottawa Senators’ Second-Round Playoff Anthem Is…Interesting

The Ottawa Senators lost the first game of the series against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday by a score of 4-1, but according to CTV Ottawa’s Morning Live, that’s okay because the Sens are “bringing pesky back.” Fans have created a second-round playoff anthem, parodying Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back,” and turning it into “Pesky Back.” The video is both awful and awesome at the same time. Bonus points for the Paul MacLean look alike and his badass dance moves.

The Ottawa Senators Are Bringing Pesky Back (Sorry, Everyone)

What’s better than championship sports anthems? Championship sports anthems recorded in round 2 of the playoffs! Meet ‘Pesky Back,’ the Ottawa Senators-themed parody of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Sexy Back.’ Nothing says “we’re the team for this year” quite like a song from 2006!Here is another ditty… The folks at CTV Morning Live Ottawa do another video to help cheer on the Ottawa Senators as they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in Round Two of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs! Here is the song. I apologize in advance. If you’re trying to identify the people in the video, they’re from Ottawa’s CTV Morning Live. And you know what? It’s fun to make fun of these goony Canadians for their dated references — the 2010s are the 2000s in Canada, sorta like how the 90s were the 80s — but I’d kill for a D.C. news crew to be filming parody videos right now instead of sitting around wishing Ovechkin knew how to hustle. So … good game, Canada.[h/t to Puck Daddy]The post The Ottawa Senators

Spezza practices with Senators

Fresh off their first-round elimination of the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators had a familiar face back on the ice on Sunday.

No. 1 center Jason Spezza practiced with his teammates for the first time since undergoing back surgery for a herniated disk on Feb. 1 and says it was nice to take another step in his recovery.

''It's been a long process and a long season for me,'' Spezza said. ''It felt good to join the team again and get some reps in. It may not seem like it and I may not play this year, but for me it's a small victory.''

Despite speculation that Spezza could be done for the season, the fact the 29-year-old took part in a full practice was encouraging for the Senators, who will face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round of the playoffs.

Spezza, who had been skating on his own before joining Ottawa's AHL callups for more training, says he had some ''ups and downs'' over the course of his recovery but made improvements over t

Video: Ottawa Senators blow out Montreal to advance to semifinals

The Ottawa Senators walked away with bragging rights to one of the ugliest series in recent NHL history.
Ottawa steamrolled into the conference semifinals with a 6-1 beatdown over Montreal on Thursday.
Despite the bad blood that consistently bubbled over, Montreal was not on Ottawa’s level.
The Canadiens were taken down in five games after being outgunned a cumulative total of 20-9.
Montreal lost its starting goaltender Carey Price and was forced to call upon Peter Budaj to secure their net and he simply was not up to the task.
Ottawa became the first team to advance in the East and did so as the No. 7 seed.
Montreal did not go down without a fight.
Three goals were scored off the power play as Montreal kept sending players to the penalty box.
Before it was over with, gross misconduct penalties were dealt to Conacher and Montreal’s Gabriel Dumont and Michael Bluden.

Senators' Twitter account incorrectly claims to be the first to advance to the 2nd round

The Ottawa Senators are pretty happy that they're advancing to the second round. Perhaps they are all a bit too excited as the team's official Twitter account proudly claimed that they are the first team to advance to the second round of the playoffs. There's just one problem - San Jose advanced to the second round by sweeping the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night. That was two days ago. Maybe the team's Twitter was trying to say they are the first to advance from the Eastern Conference. Maybe all of the excitement got to someone's head and they blocked out what happened a couple days ago. Either way, congratulations to Ottawa for moving on and at least this blunder was a fairly minor one in the scheme of things. [follow]
