What NCAA Football 09 Can Teach Us about the California Golden Bears

Just picked up NCAA Football 09 with Darren "I can pump out illegitimate kids faster than I can run my 40 yard dash time" McFadden.

After a few days of putting my time into the game, I've walked away with some observations and thoughts as to what we might be able to expect for this upcoming season. Keep in mind, to take this all with a grain of salt, as the EA developers are as authoritative of a college football source as Mark May is.

It's Official: New Cal Uniforms

For months now, there have been rumblings of new Cal Bears uniforms. I scrounged up what I could in in screenshots from videos and official shots from EA for the new NCAA 09 games. Well we've got finally got the official word from the Cal Athletics Department.

The official photos confirm what we saw coming. The solid stripes on the sides of the pants, and a solo lightning-esque stripe running across the top of the helmet.

Nate Longshore: Johnny Unitas Award Candidate

The quarterback controversy at Cal just got a little bit more interesting. And by a little bit, I mean, none at all. Why? Nate Longshore (aka. Nate the Great, aka. Nasty Nate) was just named a preseason candidate for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. I'm serious. It even says so on the official website.

Late 2008 Recruit: Bryant Nnabuife

Scout.com has a story up about a late recruit. So late in fact, that I wasn't even aware that we even had any more scholarships available to give away. Cal picked up a late addition to their secondary, 2nd year Blinn College JUCO transfer, Bryant Nnabuife.

Marshawn Lynch Involved in Hit and Run?

Yahoo Sports is reporting that a vehicle registered to former Cal running back Marshawn Lynch was involved in a hit and run incident over the weekend. No word yet as to whether or not Marshawn was driving the SUV as messages to both Lynch and his agent have yet been returned.

Should Desean Jackson Tell His Dad to "Sit Yo @$$ Down!"?

With the recent reports covered both by the Philadelphia Eagles and Cal Bears media regarding former Cal wide receiver Desean Jackson and the strain on his respective teams as a result of his family members' involvement, you kind of have to wonder how much is too much in terms of the parent involvement in sports.

Can the parents really be faulted for wanting to be truly involved in their son's life?Or does a young athlete have to at some point become his own man and do, think, and act for himself?

Desean Jackson Whups on Owen Schmitt...in NCAA 09

I stumbled across a fun video (albeit not the best quality as the footage is filmed off-screen) of Desean Jackson taking on Owen Schmitt, the fullback out of West Virginia who has bragging rights as the PSP cover star. Well that's about where the bragging stops, because our boy Desean whupped on Schmitty based on the footage. Now if it were a bench pressing contest...or twinkie-thon, Owen might have the edge.

Jahvid Best vs. Joe McKnight - Battle of the #1 #4s

Both have been compared to Reggie Bush, with Desean Jackson going so far as to call Best "Little Bush." Both were some of the most highly recruited running back prospects in the country, with McKnight obviously having received a bit more press. Both played as true freshman and immediately got playing time, and subsequently, both made immediate impacts for their teams. Oh, and both wear number 4.

NCAA Football Cover Curse?

Is there such a thing for NCAA Football Cover Players? Most self respecting Madden videogame and/or NFL fans are aware of the infamous Madden Curse with NFL pro players. But what about NCAA 's former cover stars? I decided to do some investigating and see what misfortunes if any, have struck those who've been forever ingrained on the covers of past games.

New Cal Uniforms Revealed in NCAA Football 09?

For a few weeks now, there have been mumblings and grumblings in the Cal Football fan community of new uniforms to be revealed this upcoming season. No one had really been able to get any confirmation of this or nab any photos of what these might look like.

Until now.

Okay. Not really. The only real "evidence" I found was when I was looking at some gameplay video of NCAA Football 09. In a video highlighting Cal vs. Florida State, we got what may potentially be the new uniforms, in rendered video game form. Take a look for yourself.

Desean Jackson:NCAA Football 09 PS2 Cover Boy

It looks like EA has chosen our boy Desean Jackson to be their cover boy for the Playstation 2 version of NCAA Football 2009. Pretty sick cover if you ask me. Definitely beats Jared Zabranksy's cover from last year (even though the 2007 Fiesta Bowl was one of the greatest college football games ever).

BCS Rejects Playoff Proposal

Don't expect any major changes for the current BCS system for at least the next six years. ESPN reports that John Swofford, who serves as the BCS Chairman and ACC commissioner, announced today that they will keep the current BCS system of 4 BCS bowl games and one national championship bowl game through the 2014 season.

It seems that the Cal Bears players who didn't get a call about being drafted this weekend, have found a homeâ€"for now. Wide receiver Robert Jordan and Offensive Lineman Brian De La Puente have reportedly signed free agent deals with the San Francisco 49ers.

Well it appears the Patrick Cowan can't catch a break.
