SPREAD OPTION AT MICHIGAN

Considering that Mallett is considering to another school, and Michigan has nothing but pocket passers at quarterback, I would think its gonna be a rough one for them next year. The talent in the stable of running backs they have is a major plus but they have not an athlete like Pat White or Tim Tebow back there directing traffic. I have no doubt the new coaches and Rodriguez will have no trouble with bringing in someone who fits the bill. But until they do it will just be a bunch of unkowns with no experience trying to make it work. And with the possibility of Manningham and others leaving after this year and the Buckeyes and Illinois coming back with another capital team next year is only going to make things harder. But the beauty of Michigan is they always pull through, they always have, even with a new offense.

COLLEGE COACHES CAN'T CUT IN THE PROS

College coaches never cut in the NFL and there is plenty of evidence to support that. The only way to go in the pros is to work your way up from assistant to coordinator to the head coach so you learn how things are done. The reason for it, is that when college coaches are so successfull at that level with the offenses they have, they try to implement it in the pros and find out that they are in way over their head.
Steve Spurier is the ultamite example when brought the run and gun offense and the Redskins offense just sputtered the whole time. That is the perfect example of this dilemma. Imagine Urban Meyer trying to bring the spread option to the NFL and play the Baltimore Ravens, they would shut that down in the first series. Not that I don't like Urban Meyer, I think he's a genius and definitely high in the running on my list for top five college coaches in the country.
I honestly can't think of one college coach other than Dick Vermiel that has gone from college to head coach at the professional level and excelled. I'm sure I'm missing some that have but I sure there aren't many.

DID TEBOW FORGET ANYONE

What a perfect end to this season, Tebow getting the Heisman. Atleast he didn't leaving anybody out of his shoutouts when he was talking a 100 words a second, not even the second time around.

Even though I am a Gator fan, I will admit that I was not in favor of him because he's a sophmore, but I think it was inevitable. The godly numbers he put up this year (51 tds) are probably the lowest of bars for just about any other player this season. Even a hundred words a second is a record too.

SHOULD TEBOW WIN?

This has been the bizarrest of seasons I have ever witnessed. From Appalachian State knocking off Michigan to Lousiville Losing to everybody and Oregons' Dennis Dixon going down and dropping out of reach of the Heisman Trophy. And speaking of the Heisman should Sophmores be allowed to win the award? In my opinion only juniors and seniors should win the trophy irregardless of how they perform that season. It should be based on how well their team does and what they have accomplished throughout the course of atleast a three year career.

Carson Palmer and Jason White are good examples in this case. They both battled injuries, Palmer had three disappointing seasons in the eyes of USC fans, White came back his senior season after god know how many knee surgeries and threw forty touchdowns, and they started the bulk of their careers while going through all the beatings and critisim. Tebow on the other hand who as New England coach Bill Belichick put it "just one of those players who woke up on third base and didn't hit the triple." following their national championship season. Tebow has not payed his dues nor led Florida to win their division much less their conference. He hasn't scratched the surface on his career yet.

After a season like this, it probably doesnt matter who wins it. But it should go to players like Colt Brennan, Darren McFadden, Matt Ryan, and possibly Dennis Dixon. All three have been through more, broken records, and seen more action than Tebow. Even though Dixon went down in the latter half of the season, his absence was very well noticed as his team lost the final three games of the season. That shows how good of a player he is.

Over twenty touchdown through the air and on the ground is a hard statistic to beat for a lot of players this year. If he doesn't win it this year, I would probably think he will next year. I am not blind to how phenominal of a player Tebow is and on paper he did better than pretty much all the other candidates. But in my opinion the award should go to players who are more seasoned and have a longer track record of more than just one year.

WHY TRESSEL IS THE PART OF THE ELITE

I think this season is a testament to how good Ohio State coach Jim Tressel is. After all the losses that team took on both sides of the depth chart last season, including Heisman winner Troy Smith, it looked a little grimm on paper. But when it comes to Tressel and all the OSU coaches and everything that team has accomplished this year, that paper should be shredded.

This season started out as a year of discovery for the Buckeyes, and I think everything discovered how good of a coach Tressel is in terms of recruiting and doing the best with what he has. How far they came with Boekman at QB replacing Smith pretty much says it all, I never would have pictured him to come as far as he did this season, but that was a result of good coaching, just like their whole season. There have also been some playmakers come out of the woodwork this season that filled the shoes of the of the ones before them like Robiskie and Hartline replacing Ginn and Gonzalez. The list just goes on and on, and it will as long as Tressel is there.

WILL PELINI BRING BACK THE OPTION?

TO ALL THOSE GREAT CORNHUSKER FANS OUT THERE WHO ARE DYING TO SEE THE OPTION BACK AGAIN, EVEN IF IT'S JUST A LITTLE BIT, I THINK IT MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT SEASON. PERSONALLY, AS I'M SURE A GREAT MANY OF YOU ARE TIRED OF THE WEST COAST OFFENSE, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE AN OFFENSE MUCH LIKE WHAT LSU OR VIRGINIA TECH USES WHERE THERE IS A BALANCED ATTACK WITH A POWER RUNNING GAME AND THE OPTION INCLUDED.

BUT TO DO THAT YOU MUST HAVE AT LEAST A MOBILE QUARTERBACK, WHICH NEBRASKA DOES NOT. SINCE NEBRASKA HAS BEEN HEAVILY INVESTED IN THE WEST COAST OFFENSE IN RECENT YEARS AND HAVING GOOD RECIEVERS AND A VERSTILE BACKFIELD, THEY COULD ADOPT THE SPREAD OPTION IF THEY RECRUIT AN ATHLETIC QUARTERBACK TO RUN IT AND MAKES BETTER DECISIONS THAN RECENT YEARS. OR BASICALLY JUST ANOTHER ERIC CROUCH WOULD BE NICE. I BELIEVE JOE GANZ IS A VERY FINE QUARTERBACK WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN PLAYING ALL YEAR AFTER WATCHING HIM THE LAST FEW GAMES, SHOULD FIT THE BILL. THE GOOD THING ABOUT GANZ IS NO ONE KNOWS JUST HOW GOOD HE REALLY IS AND HE WOULD BE PROBABLY THE BEST OF CANDIDATES TO RUN THE SPREAD OPTION.

IT WILL BE A NAILBITING OFFSEASON TO SEE WHAT KIND OF OFFENSE PELINI AND THE CORNHUSKERS DECIDE COME OUT WITH IN THE FALL AND RESTORE THIS TEAM TO THE DOMINANT ELITE OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL. GO HUSKERS
