Army rescinds offer to Caleb Campbell & requires him to report to active duty

Remember when Army safety Caleb Campbell was drafted in the 7th round, and everybody stood and cheered because the Army had installed a new rule that allowed graduates to defer their duty for a few years to pursue such opportunities as playing in the NFL. Well, that feel good story is now dead, as the Army has rescinded the offer and Campbell must report to active duty. He may apply for a release in May 2010, but who knows if that will ever be granted. Too bad, but I guess that's a decision you make when you plan on attending Army.

ESPN handed out breathalyzers at the ESPY's

AOLFanhouse has a post today with a headline: "Why did ESPN hand out breathalyzers at the ESPY's?". Well, for starters, there have been plenty of celebrities busted for DUI's and they are known to imbibe quite frequently when they go out. So I'm not sure what the big fuss is, it's probably a good thing because it will make these guys more attentive to the dangers that driving drunk present to everyone.

LSU disciplines another player: Jarvis Jones kicked off team

The LSU Tigers have had an interesting off-season, as they dismissed their starting QB and probable All-SEC player Ryan Perriloux and now potential OL starter Jarvis Jones for "unspecified violation of team rules". Jones wasn't given nearly as many chances as Perriloux, but then again he probably wasn't as good as the highly touted QB. Your thoughts?

David Duval is playing in the British Open...I didn't even know he was still a golfer!

Everybody remembers David Duval, the once promising opponent of Tiger Woods in the late 90's and early 2000's. He was winning tournaments left and right, giving Tiger a run for his money, and playing in those made for TV matchups against Tiger. Well then things got a bit rocky and some back pains took over his game...and David Duval all but disappeared from the game of golf. Well, we've got a re-emergence of the once highly ranked player and it happened today at the British Open. He shot a 3-over 73 in poor conditions, and feels as if he's swinging the club very good right now. Congrats on getting back on the horse David, good luck.

Golden Boy still has words of wisdom: NFLers should just have more sex

Paul Hornung, the former Golden Boy from Notre Dame and the Green Bay Packers, has a nice view on the life of current NFL players and how they should stay out of trouble. When somebody told Hornung that he couldn't replicate his NFL lifestyle today, he rebuffs strongly. Check out what he says:

Monty: "You guys had a great life, but I don't think you could live that lifestyle today."

Hornung: "Oh hell you could. You're in such good shape, are you crazy? When you're 24-years-old, you weigh 215 pounds, you can work out every day of your life, you could make love to five girls a week and play 44 games of football. Hell."

That's what I'm talking about...

Artest continues to make a ruckus, fires agent

After not opting for free agency and staying in his current deal with the Sacramento Kings, Ron Artest has been nothing but pissed off. He immediately regretted his decision, and it was made public the next day in the Sacramento Bee, and now Artest is so mad that he's going to represent himself and get rid of his agent, while looking for a trade, because its' surely his fault that Artest is still a King. This merry-go-round is just indicative of Artest's character and inability to look at a situation logically. He had to know that the Kings weren't going to have him in the long term plans, because GM Jeff Petrie made it very clear that was the case. You effed up Ron, now shut up and play ball and deal with it next season.

Former Cornhusker Jason Peter wants to "spit in Lou Holtz's (bleeping) face"

Well, the headline pretty much sums it up, but former Nebraska football player Jason Peter isn't a fan of former Notre Dame & South Carolina coach current ESPN college analyst Lou Holtz. Peter says the bad-blood started when "his younger brother was a highly touted offensive lineman who committed to Notre Dame shortly before he broke a vertebra in his neck. Holtz never called or visited, though two Notre Dame assistants did, and in the fall Damien was "frozen out, ignored, discarded" by Holtz and company." That would piss me off too, but who knows if this is actually true. Either way, Holtz is a horrible analyst and I can't stand his crazy rants and awkward pep talks.

Skinny Darius Miles using performance enhancing drugs for his comeback?

Is Darius Miles using steroids? That seems to be the topic of discussion around the former 1st rounder's attempted comeback, as he has been suspended by the league for 10 games with no explanation. There are a few possibilities for this number, as it could be his 4th bust with weed (very likely), or his first bust with steroids. It would make sense that Miles would resort to steroids, as he has always been a rail-thin forward in the league, and now that he's out of it he probably misses the lifestyle (ie money) and maybe a little bit the game.

Rich Rodriguez and Michigan to split the $4 million he owes West Virginia

This ugly story has finally reached a closing mark, as West Virginia and Rich Rodriguez finally agree to a settlement on the terms of his recent departure from the school to take over the Michigan job. Rodriguez and Michigan will split the $4 million settlement in order to put the incident to rest finally, with the University paying $2.5 million and Rodriguez $1.5 million. Either way, this was one of the worst divorces ever between a former school and coach, and this one is especially saucy because Rodriguez is an alum himself. All in all, I'm glad this is over so that we can focus on the play on the field, and not the ugly back story.

Around the Horn's Bill Plaschke begs Elton Brand to stay a Clipper

After Elton Brand sweet talked Baron Davis all the way from the Bay to LA, it was thought to be a foregone conclusion that he would re-sign with the Clippers. However, Brand has entertained offers from pretty much everybody, including the Golden State Warriors, whom he lured Baron away from. Will Brand return to the Clippers or head off for more money and an almost guaranteed better long-term situation? Well, LA Times writer and guest of ESPN's Around the Horn Bill Plaschke taped a passionate video in which he begs Brand to stick with the Clippers. Check it out and lemme know what y'all think.

Gerald Green gets another shot with Mavs

The deep pockets of Mark Cuban continue to give out money, as the Mavs sign former dunk champ Gerald Green to a one year contract worth the 3 year league minimum. Green is an explosive athlete but is lacking in skill, as the former #18 pick has averaged only 8.2 ppg and is a defensive liability. Hopefully, for both parties, this works out.

Bulls' Chris Duhon joins Knicks

After having some off-the field issues with the Bulls organization last season, guard Chris Duhon has signed a 2 year deal with the New York Knicks, for a shocking $12 million. After spending 4 up and down years with the Bulls, Duhon has to be excited to start running with new coach Mike D'Antoni, who says Duhon will be the starter on a roster already featuring Stephon "Starbury" Marbury, Nate Robinson, and Mardy Collins at the PG position. Duhon, starting over Marbury and Robinson?! I don't know about that, he seems like a good backup option but not sure if you want him being the new Steve Nash in NY. Your thoughts?

James Posey not feeling the love from Boston

After winning the NBA Championship with the Boston Celtics, James Posey was expecting some love in the form of a new contract. Unfortunately, Boston doesn't feel that he's worth more than the $5.8 that they have offered him. Posey, is a bit upset that the money is being flaunted at Clippers forward Corey Maggette instead of one of the key defenders on the championship team. Is Posey worth more than Maggette? Is Boston making a mistake by not pursuing him more heavily?

Nike running Team USA?

Nike is the largest sports company in the world, there is no doubt about that. However, to go as far to say that they are influencing Team USA in any way beyond their shoe or uniform selection would be considered somewhat of a conspiracy theory, don't you think? Well, this is just what the folks at AOLFanhouse are claiming in a new article published on their blog site. Check it out and let me know if the idea is believable.

Chad Johnson has the mental capacity of a "small soap dish"

We all know Chad Johnson isn't the most intelligent NFL player, but to have your own attorney call you out on your lack of mental capacity/agility is just straight embarrassing. The quote from his lawyer was "The intellectual capacity there is lacking ... I don't understand how he can understand a playbook." That's just hilarious, finally somebody calls these guys out on how dumb they really are...because they all think they are the best at everything they do. Get some humility, you're great athletes and football players, not intelligent human beings.
