Scott Macartney's Crash

For those of you who don't know skiing very well today was the Hannenkahm Downhill, which is known as the Super Bowl of ski racing. It is held every January in Kitzbuhel, Austria and is considered the toughest course in the world. Unfortunately once again it has shown just how tough and dangerous it is. One of my closest friends, teammate, and college roommate Scott Macartney lost control off the finish jump going about 90 mph flying 30 feet in the air and landed on his head. It's one of the gnarliest crashes I have seen in a long time and is tough to watch so I will leave that at your discretion. I wouldn't post the video unless I knew he was doing well. I just received news that he is in stable condition at a hospital in Innsbruck, Austria and will make a full recovery. After he came to his first question was "how fast was I going" and "are my knees ok?" Scott is a true competitor!

wow that is nuts....

That kind of crash could kill a person.

Glad to hear he's ok!

what did he do wrong, or did he just hit a bad bump? it must feel awful to anticipate that crash!

he didn't really do anything wrong. the light was really flat and it was hard to see the terrain going into the jump. it looked like he misjudged the take-off and lost his balance right away. there has been a lot of controversy over how tough the organizers made the course this year. they added more terrain than usual, which obviously backfired.

Whoa...does that count as a finish b/c he crossed the line after he fell?

it still counts as a finish b/c he crossed the line. he was 33rd.

give scott the best wishes from me and Eva! We were shocked when we saw the DH yesterday. But glad he is getting better and going to be all fine!

Just an update from Austria, Scott is doing great! He's had friends and teammates coming by to see him and is hoping to be out soon. Yes, he did get a finish, 33rd. He was having a great run. He was top-10 at two intermediate points, 2nd in one section and the fastest time at the final speed trap.

Glad to hear he's OK.

No broken bones, even?

miraculously he didn't break anything, not one bone!

Other reports say he will he is again conscious but will remain hospitalized for now. Which is appropriate, since he was obviously having seizures while lying on the surface after having come to a stop.
