Welcome to my yard!

Welcome to my Yard!

Bryon here...this is my first Yardbarker post so here's a little about myself for those not familiar with ski racing. I race the speed events, Downhill and Super G, which are really fast—upwards of 80-90 mph—with big air (check out this video from our training camp last month in Portillo, Chile to get a sense of the air and speed we get). I have been on the U.S. team for seven years and raced on the World Cup Tour for four. Most of our races are in Europe so I spend most of my winters overseas, which is cool because that's where most of our fans are. We're trying to change that here, though.

My life basically consists of skiing and playing music as much as possible...not a bad gig. I just moved to LA, which will be good for music, but I'm a mountain man at heart. I grew up in Park City, Utah skiing with my friends and started racing when I was 10. I finally had the time to record my first album "Road Sodas" last year-- check it out at http://www.bryonfriedmanmusic.com or http://www.myspace.com/bryonfriedman.

I'm excited to bring the sport and lifestyle of ski racing — intertwined with some music — to your doorstep. I'll post our best race (and crash) videos, pictures of life on the road, and get you acquainted with some of fastest, and most hilarious, skiers in the world.

If you have any questions I'll be more than happy to answer...for now, check out my yard.

Hey Bryon! Looks like you're pretty ridiculously talented...I can't play guitar, sing, or ski, so I gotta say that I'm a little jealous.

What's the worst crash you've ever had?

The worst crash i ever had was in Chamonix, France in January 2005. I was in a World Cup Downhill training run when I was thrown off course and into the safetly nets going about 70mph. I broke my leg really badly (tib/fib), broke two bones in my hand, and have had 8 subsequent surgeries to fix everything. As you can see I'm back on snow but it has been a long recovery!

Wow, crazy! Happy you came back from that...I always get so scared for skiers when I see that kind of stuff....

It's pretty awesome to have a skier in the Yard!

Welcome.

Thanks...it's great to be here!

I am a Texas Lady and I know nothing about skiing or snow, but I did watch all of the last winter Olympics and I was very impressed. Your sport is so dangerous, I have always wondered how individuals in your sport became interested in the first place and what age did you start, its not like their is a childrens league for downhill skiing. Welcome to the Yard!

The reality of skiing is, to become skier you have to grow up around skiing, which unfortunately isn't very accessible to most Americans. I grew up in Park City, Utah and woke up every morning starting at some of the best skiing in the world...it was right in front of me and I gravitated towards it. My dad put me on skis when I was 3 and I started racing when I was 10, after that I just progressed through the ranks and eventually made the National Team, which I dreamt about since I started racing.

welcome! good luck with the blog!

Good job getting you.

Welcome! Bryon, is that your music? That rules if it is. You should put it on all of your videos.

thanks....glad you like my music! i will definitely put it in more videos-

realize i am a few months behind here......just watch the vid on YBtvN and came here to find out who was singing and playin guitar.....obviously Jack Johnson influenced but i knew it wasnt him...........music + vid = goose bumps.....thanks for the inspiration

Welcome to the Yard Bryon, loved the clips et to music...not what I was expecting from 70mph skiing highlights but it was great. Dina beat me to my question about your worst crash...what's the craziest place you've skied?

the craziest place i've skied is Kitzbuhel, Austria...it's the gnarliest course on the World Cup tour and the Austrian's treat it like the Super Bowl of skiing.

You hear in all the other sports that training camp is a grind and the athletes generally can't stand it. Is it the same in skiing? Do you look forward to camp, particularly hitting different places in the World, like Chile? And btw, how hot are the women in Chile?

For me it really depends on where the training camp is. Sometimes we train at super high altitudes like 10,000 to 11,000 feet (mainly Portillo, Chile and Summit County, Colorado) and that can be a total grind because your body wears down quickly when there isn't enough oxygen to recover well. Other training camps like in New Zealand or Europe aren't as bad because our bodies stay healthier longer. The bottom line is I love traveling the world to ski and couldn't think of a much better lifestyle!
As for the Chilean women...Que Buena!

Welcome to the Yard, Bryon! I love your blog! When are you going to be racing in the northeast area? And when can we expect a follow up to the Road Sodas?

Our only race in the Northeast this year is U.S. National Championships in Sugerloaf, Maine. It's scheduled for March 19-26 so come check it out if you're around. As far as recording another album, I'm recording a couple new songs for a ski film right now and hope to have a full album done this Spring.

What part of LA you living in. The only place here to get some snow is mountain high (man-made)

I live in Brentwood but don't really ski in or around California...we do have a camp every Spring in Mammoth though.

Oh near UCLA?.... I am from the San Fernando valley (never live here). I snowboard so that is why I wondered if you ever go to mountain high.

hey Bryon,
will we hear you play a gig over here in Europe some time this winter?

i hope so! i'm trying to figure out my schedule and find someone in or around Austria to help me book some shows.
